Final S.T.O.P. Collection, Homeowners
Cleanup Days Scheduled for 2015
The final Homeowners Cleanup and S.T.O.P.
Collection dates for 2015 provide residents with the opportunity
to clean out unwanted debris and household hazardous waste
from their homes. According to Town Councilman Joseph D.
Muscarella, final dates will take place in October and November.
“The final S.T.O.P. collection days, which allows residents to
bring hazardous household waste, electronic waste, and unwanted
pharmaceutical drugs for disposal, will take place on Saturday,
October 17, and Sunday, November 8,” Councilman Muscarella
said. “The final Homeowners Cleanup days, which allow residents
to take unwanted, non-hazardous trash to the Town’s Solid Waste
Disposal Complex, are scheduled for Saturday, October 24, and
Sunday, November 15.”

December for three evening and one matinee
performances at the Tilles Center on the LIU Post

Councilwoman Alesia Announces
Leaf Collection Program
Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia announced
that the Town’s Annual Leaf Collection Program is
scheduled to get underway on Monday, November 2.
“Town residents will have bagged leaves collected
on their regular S.O.R.T. recycling collection days,”
Councilwoman Alesia said. “Residents should place their

Councilman Pinto Announces Fall Workshop Enrichment Program Now Open
Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto announced that registration for the Town’s Fall Workshop program is now open, offering
adults and children a wide variety of cultural, artistic and self-improvement courses. Workshops are held at community
centers throughout the Town. Workshop categories include arts, fitness education, entertainment, music and more.
To request a brochure or more information on how to register for these programs, call the Department of
Community & Youth Services at 797-7925. The Councilman noted that brochures and registration forms are also
available on the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com. Also, be sure to look out for the 2016 Workshop Program
brochure this upcomming spring, exclusively found on the Town website.
Town Supervisor John Venditto, Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson
and Town Clerk James Altadonna Jr., recently discussed aspects of
residential fire safety with the Massapequa Fire Department.
Supervisor Venditto: October is Fire Safety Month
Supervisor John Venditto reminds residents that the Town has
available some informative brochures that can help homeowners
avoid a potentially life-threatening situation.
“With October being Fire Safety Awareness Month, there
is no better time to take some necessary precautions to help
protect yourself and your loves ones,” Supervisor Venditto said.
The Supervisor noted that the Town has a fire safety awareness
brochure available on its website, www.oysterbaytown.com.
“The Town is truly fortunate to have among its residents many
men and women who reach out and give of themselves as
voluntary firefighters and auxiliary police officers,” the Supervisor
continued. “While these selfless individuals are part of an elite
and well-trained group, there is always a need to replenish their
ranks with fresh recruits.”
Supervisor Venditto added that additional information on
becoming a volunteer firefighter or auxiliary police officer can
also be found on the Town’s website.
The Town’s North and South shores will host the
third annual Family Fall & Halloween Festival. The
event takes place on Saturday, October 10 from
1 to 4 p.m. at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park
in Woodbury, and on Saturday, October 24 from
1 to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in
Massapequa. This free event is held rain or shine
and includes bouncies, games, a hayride, apple cider
and popcorn for youngsters and adults. Children can
explore the ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch and pick out their
own pumpkin, which they can later decorate. Children
are also welcome to wear costumes; parents don’t
forget your cameras for great photo opportunities.

BAILEY ARBORETUM Bayville/Feeks Lane, Lattingtown (571-8020)
Estate setting provides a natural backdrop for a magnificent collection of
trees, shrubs and plants, many exceedingly rare. Open to Nassau County
residents and guests.
BAYVILLE HISTORICAL MUSEUM 34 School Street, Bayville (628-1720)
Museum housed, in part, in the only remaining building complex that was
part of the Harrison Williams 88-acre “Oak Point” estate. It features several rooms of exhibits depicting Bayville’s history, including a large room
for changing exhibitions.
COLD SPRING HARBOR FISH HATCHERY & AQUARIUM (692-6768)
1660 Rte. 25A, Cold Spring Harbor - Non-profit educational center dedicated
to educating visitors about freshwater ecosystems of New York. Educational
programs available to public and school groups throughout the year.
COLD SPRING HARBOR LABORATORY (367-8800) 1 Bungtown Road,
Cold Spring Harbor - Private, non-profit institution with research programs in
cancer, neuroscience, plant genetics, genomics and bioinformics. Regularly
scheduled free Community Tours during spring and fall; reservations required.
EARLE-WIGHTMAN HOUSE 20 Summit Street, Oyster Bay (922-5032)
A circa 1720 building restored and maintained by the Town of Oyster Bay,
it is the home of the Oyster Bay Historical Society and houses a collection
of Town memorabilia.
HICKSVILLE GREGORY MUSEUM Heitz Place Courthouse, Hicksville
(822-7505) Largest rock and mineral collection on Long Island along with
more than 5,000 butterfly and moth specimens is housed in the historic
Hicksville Courthouse ca. 1895. Courses offered in earth and natural sciences and Long Island history, as well as lectures, workshops and field trips.
JOHN F. KENNEDY MEMORIAL WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Lying along the southern boundary of the Town of Oyster Bay, the 500-acre
sanctuary is considered to be one of the most important refuges for waterfowl in the northeast. Established in 1959, the sanctuary is co-owned by the
Town of Oyster Bay and the New York State Environmental Conservation
Department. Visitors must obtain a pass from the Town Parks Department,
977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa, 797-4110.
LONG ISLAND NATURE CONSERVANCY PRESERVES & REFUGES
(631-367-3225) The Long Island Nature Conservancy operates a number
of preserves and refuges in the Town of Oyster Bay that offer opportunities
to view nature and a variety of birds and other wildlife. Call for locations.
MASSAPEQUA PRESERVE 423-acre preserve runs from Merrick Road on
south to Linden Drive on north. Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail runs through
the preserve. Hiking, biking, fishing (permit required).
MUTTONTOWN PRESERVE Muttontown Lane, East Norwich (571-8500)
A 300-acre preserve includes miles of walking and self-guiding nature trails, bridle
paths and practice rings. Operated by the Nassau County Museum System.

Ice Skating Center
NASSAU-SUFFOLK GREENBELT TRAIL
22-mile trail runs across Long Island from Massapequa Preserve through
Bethpage State Park, Trail View State Park and Stillwell Woods Preserve to

OLD BETHPAGE VILLAGE RESTORATION (572-8401) Round Swamp
Road, Old Bethpage - An authentic 19th century village nestled in a hidden
valley of 209 sprawling acres. Historic buildings were moved here from
various parts of Long Island. Arts and crafts demonstrated by “villagers” in
traditional period garb using authentic 19th century implements. Part of the
Nassau County Museum System Interpretation Program.
Annual Oyster Festival Returns this October
The Oyster Festival returns for its 32nd year the weekend
of October 17 and 18. This event attracts thousands of
people from all over the tri-state area to the hamlet of
Oyster Bay.
The Oyster Festival is run by the non-profit Oyster
Bay Charitable Fund and features volunteers from
numerous local organizations. For more information, visit

OYSTER BAY RAILROAD MUSEUM 102 AudreyAve, Oyster Bay ( 558-7036)
This rapidly expanding museum is dedicated to preserving the legacy of
Long Island’s railroad history. Preview Center features interactive, hands-on
and audio-visual exhibits, plans for the future and gift shop.
PLANTING FIELDS ARBORETUM STATE HISTORIC PARK

400 acres, half formally landscaped, rest in natural state with trails.
A horticultural showplace, including floral gardens and greenhouses.

RAYNHAM HALL MUSEUM 20 West Main Street, Oyster Bay (922-6808)
Home of Samuel Townsend family used as British headquarters during
the American Revolution. Main house built ca. 1740; Victorian wing added
1851. Period furnishings, special exhibits.
SEA CLIFF VILLAGE MUSEUM 95 10th Avenue, Sea Cliff (671-0090)
Housed in a former Methodist parsonage, the museum focuses on the history
of Sea Cliff. It contains an extensive photo collection, a costume exhibit, artifacts, documents and gift shop and sponsors special programs and exhibits.
THEODORE ROOSEVELT SANCTUARY AND AUDUBON CENTER
Cove Road, Oyster Bay (922-3200) Owned by the National Audubon Society, the sanctuary contains 12 acres of unspoiled land and a self-guiding
nature trail. Museum houses Long Island flora and fauna exhibits. Adjacent
to Young’s Cemetery, final resting place of Theodore Roosevelt.
TACKAPAUSHA MUSEUM AND PRESERVE Washington Avenue,
Seaford (571-7443) Eighty-acre preserve with five miles of lush trails and
many live animals. Guided tours (school children only) available.
TOWNSEND MUSEUM 107 East Main Street, Oyster Bay (558-7092)
Museum was created in 1982 to display historical family memorabilia relating
to John, Henry and Richard Townsend, 17th century settlers of Long Island,
and their descendants, as well as all other early settlers of the United States
by the name of Townsend and their descendants. Includes maps, portraits,
books, furniture and genealogical records.

922-SAIL(7245) Not-for-profit organization dedicated to inspiring people
about the marine environment. Oyster Bay Sailing School and oyster sloop
Christeen offer educational programs, certification classes, boat and kayak
rentals, sunset sails and more.

Registration for the Town of Oyster Bay Youth Ice
Hockey Program will be taking place October 11, 12
and 15 at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center
in Bethpage.
This recreational instructional program, open to girls and
boys ages 6 to 13, gives participants the opportunity to
hone their skating and hockey skills under the guidance
of ice hockey coaches. A ‘tot hockey’ program is

Supervisor’s Run Kicks off Oyster Fest
As is tradition, the Supervisor’s 5K Run will kickoff the
Oyster Festival the morning of Saturday, October 17. The
race begins at 9 a.m., and is open to men, women and
child runners, as well as wheelchair athletes. For more

The ‘Learn to Skate’ program at the Town of Oyster Bay
Ice Skating Center offers group skating lessons to beginners
through advanced levels. Taught by The Rinx Total Skating
Program, skaters are grouped based on age and skill, ranging
from Snowplow and Basic Skills through Free Skate levels.
