1.1
Introduction to this study
This study provides an overview of all published shabtis for the Prince Hor, son of High Priest
Menkheperra. In addition to the published examples I added the shabtis I have come across in
the world and used some parallel information from the book of Glenn Janes, author of
“
Shabti, in a private view.”I will start of with a short introduction of the ancient owner Hor
and describe his shabtis in general. In the following chapters you will find the museum
parallels (chapter 2) and the privately owned parallels (chapter 3).
1.2
Who was Hor?
Hor (hr), who lived during the period referred to as the reign of High-Priests And PriestKings of Thebes. The hieroglyphic inscription bearing the defects’name reads: “
The
illuminated one, the Osiris, Prophet of Amun, Hor.”
Hor, who died before his older brother Pinedjem II, had accumulated an impressive list of
titles that included: prophet of Amun, god’
s father of Khonsw, god’
s father of Mut, prophet of
Anubis and Konsw, prophet of Hathor at Gebelein, prophet of Khonshw-ity at Gebelein,
prophet of Seth of Sepermerw, prophet of Amun of the Thrones of Two Lands, master of the
Holy of Holies in Thebes. He was the brother of Pinedjem II the ruling king of Thebes (990969), the son of Menkheperre the high priest of Thebes (1045-1032 BC) and king of Thebes
(1032-992 BC), the grandson of Pinedjem I the high priest of Thebes (1070-1054 BC) and
king of Thebes (1054-1032 BC) and of Queen Henuttawy (c.1085-1035 BC), daughter of
Ramesses XI (1098-1070 BC), the last king of the 20th Dynasty.
“
The sarcophagus of Hor (Cairo 29619) was one of the most sumptuous: It was a triple set,
where the innermost gilded sarcophagus also served as a cartonnage. It also featured a short
legend inscribed: ‘
Hor, prophet of Amun, prophet of Seth and Separmerw, son of first prophet
of Amun Menkheperre, true of voice.’This inscription confirms that Hor was indeed related
to the great priests. Found in the ‘
great chamber,’[of the Second Cache] the sarcophagus
contained its mummy which according to Daressy, although ransacked in antiquity, still
preserved its Osirian shroud, with wrappings and papyri that were inscribed (probably upon

burial) to the name of the first prophet of Amun, Pinedjem, son of Menkheperre, year 3. His
bright blue shabtis, are amongst the best crafted they are reminiscent—albeit smaller (12-14
cm instead of 16-18 cm)—of the shabtis of his brother Pinedjem II”(Aubert 1998:81 #29, pl.
12).”

Description of the shabtis
The workmanship on the shabtis for Hor is excellent for the period. A distinction can be made
between worker types, carrying two hoes, and overseer types carrying a whip in the left hand
with the right arm stretched next to the body flinching another whip. The worker types all
feature a tripartite striated painted wig, including seshed headband. On the other hand, the
overseer types have a tripartite wig painted entirely black. The worker types vary in size
between 12 cm and 12.5 cm. The overseer types vary in seize between 13.5 and 14 cm.
The worker types of Hor are all inscribed with a shortened version of chapter six, whereby the
inscription is written in four to six lines:
The translation of the glyphs is: (1) The illuminated one, the Osiris, the Prophet of Amun,
Hor, (2) True of Voice, he speaks, O these shabtis, if (3) one reckons, the Osiris, Hor, True of
voice, to do (4) all the works in the God’
s land, to transport by boat the sand, (5) (here I am,
you shall say).
Especially the overseer types are very rare in private collections as a majority is held in the
Cairo museum. The total number of shabtis of Hor in this publication is 74. As some stated
that the shabtis of Hor are the largest group found in the second cache, this overview requires
a continuous update for sure.

Very rare shabti from the second Royal cache found in Deir el-Bahari 1898 in Thebes in the tomb of
Amenhotep II (KV 35). Third Intermediate period, 21st dynasty 1080-945 BC. Two tombs were found with over
56 mummies of Royal Kings, Queens, Princes, and Princesses. Including, Ramesses II,III,IV, V,VI Tuthmosis I,
II, III, seti I, II, Ahmose I, Amenhotep I, Pinedjem I, II, Siptah, Tiy, Henuttawy, and Merneptah . Shabti
inscribed for.... " the Priest of Amen, Hor, " Hor was a son of the High-Priest of Amen, Men Kheper-Re who
was ruler at Thebes before Pinudjem II. His coffins are in the Cairo Museum ( JE 29619) and on these are
several titles including "Prophet of Amen-Re, King of the Gods," "Prophet of Anubis," "God's Father Khonsu,"
"Prophet of Seth" and "Prophet of Hathor, Lady of the valley." Incredible detail for this style. Slim and
handsomely proportioned, well modelled features and detailed face. Additional details of the wig, eyes, seed bag,
and five-line inscription in applied black. Intact and pristine! Rich deep blue glaze with glassy luster. 12 cm tall.
Provenance : Ex- Mrs. Leland Stanford and Phoebe Hearst, gift to Stanford University, from jointly funded 1900
Egyptian expedition. Ex- Stanford Museum de-accession no.3129, in 1968. Other shabti's from this owner are
found in these museums: New York Met, British Museum, Leiden, Louvre, St.Pete Russia, Chicago, Florence,
Basel, Brussels, Amsterdam, Lisbon, Berlin, Alexandria, Copenhagen,as well as private collections.”

A very fine and bright blue glazed faience shabti figure for the Priest of Amun and prophet Hor.
The shabti is painted with a four-line inscription (translation provided) and the figure wears a striated
tripartite wig tied with a Seshed headband.
Hor was the son of Men-Kheper-Re, the ruler of Thebes prior to Pinudjem II. The coffin of Hor is now
in the Cairo Museum and his shabtis may be found in many major museums including the British
Museum, Louvre, Metropolitan Museum and The Hermitage.

One very clean repair across middle of legs. Small patches of surface accretion (mainly on foot).

acquired before World War II and given to the previous owner during the 1970's. Accompanied by a
sheet of collector's notes including a translation of the inscription.
Provenience: Thebes, Deir el-Bahri, Cache II, discovered January 1891 by Mohammed Abd el-Rassul
on behalf of the Egyptian Antiquities Service.

The inscription has been read as 'Make light Osiris - the priest of Amun-Hor O shabti. If
someone calls to Osiris Hor to do work in the necropolis - may he do it for you' It has been
broken below the waist and neatly glued together
