This one was originally in Don Bull’s collection and became part of my collection in 1997 (I believe it was a straight purchase). The odd thing about this opener is the stamping is upside down. One of the few cars and the only beer car I have seen stamped this way. Pfeiffer put out a lot of nice Pre-Pro openers this being one. ——-–2009 JFO Convention #31 April 22-26 Troy (Detroit) MI—–—-— A few people did inquire as to where Troy, Mi. is? Troy is about 20 miles north of Detroit. The location is great for most of the JFO membership. Stan Summers tells me that between Detroit and Troy there are lots of sightseeing possibilities and hopefully we will be able to view a couple of nice local collections including Stan’s. Registration information will be in the January issue. The Hilton hotel registration number is 248879-2100 and members make their own reservations. The cutoff date is April 12, 2009 but as always make your hotel reservations early. You can always cancel. The room rate is $99 for Wednesday and $88 for Thursday through Saturday nights. Tell them you are in the JFO Group as we need to meet certain room counts as part of the contract for the hospitality and public show room. If anyone has any questions please contact Stan Summers or myself. Make JFO Convention #31 your special trip in 2009. Bring any and all openers, corkscrews and beer advertising items especially those rare Michigan pieces. ———–———-–—-—-—Members Update——————–-—–—--——– Sadly I must report losing two long time JFO members on the same day, August 23rd. Mickey Dutcher lost a 10 month battle with cancer and Bob McNary passed away after many years of medical problems. Both were New York natives. Mickey and his wife, Ellie, got into openers in the early 90s with a purchase of a local Buffalo collection and they specialized in Figural Cast Iron openers. They attended two JFO conventions (1994 & 1997). The 1994 convention is where they sold a lot of the non-cast iron openers from the collection. Bob really got into openers when he went out on disability in the mid-1990s. His specialty was Iroquois Brewing openers and he along with his long time partner, Gloria Counts, hosted the 1999 JFO Convention in Naples, Fl. When health was permitting they attended several JFO Conventions. His collection is now being sold on eBay by gallon*reunion*man (Charles Taylor). Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ellie Dutcher and Gloria Counts and their families. JUST FOR OPENERS OCT 2008 ISSUE #120 PAGE 2 Spouse’s Corner By Pat Stanley, the Editor’s Spouse It’s the 1st day of October, one of our favorite months. We head to San Francisco soon and oh…it’s our 21st Anniversary!!! As far as marriages go, I’m probably considered to be an antique. But that’s okay as it means I am very valuable!! I’m taking this Friday off. I’ve only had two days off since JFO and one of those was only a partial day off as I went into Chapel Hill for lunch with someone we were interviewing from out of state. It would be nice to just sleep in, take a long bubble bath, read and eat lots of chocolate, but that does not describe my Friday this week. Finally, our kitchen renovation is really going to happen. It’s a total remodel, new everything. As John surfs eBay, talks to JFO friends and goes to breweriana shows, I go over all the lists and try to check them twice. We don’t have a contractor coordinating it all; I’m attempting to do that. So as Bill and Karen Hanold near moving into their new home, we are tearing ours up. As they know, there’s always little challenges to overcome. One was finding another plumber/electrician after the first one we were referred to was hurt by a flying toilet. Not funny, really. He was taking trash from a home he had been working on to the dump. When he threw the commode up into the pile, it broke up and a piece cut several ligaments in his hand. Like I said not funny, but probably did get some snickers in the ER. Then the biggest challenge is John. “Just do whatever you want. I trust you.” “You’re doing WHAT???”. But I am looking forward to one thing. John says he is going to take up cooking on the new range he picked. Sounds good to me!! One of the many details was finding a nice ice crusher. Couldn’t find a refrigerator we like that has crushed ice. And why do we need crushed ice? Simple…Jazzy and Snazzy love crushed ice. By the way, our neighbor calls them the “azzy twins”. Since I’ve given up on John, I am trying to work more on the “girls”. Snazzy the little one likes to bark at certain people and certain dogs, especially big ones. We have not figured out her preferences, if the shape, size, color, etc. have something to do with who/what is ok and who/what is not. So I am making them “sit” “quiet” when I see a potential barking spell during what is suppose to be a nice, relaxing walk. By JFO 2009 in Michigan, I may be the 2nd Caesar Milan. This week-end I am also suppose to paint the “cottage”, the adorable storage building I saved up for, that I have wanted for 14 years, that John did not want. Once he saw the quality of this particular dealer, he started measuring and adding options. I think the options ended up being more than the basic building. It even has a tin roof! Immediately after it was built, John took it over. He even has a paper towel holder that attaches to the pegboard!! Yes, most of you know how tidy he is. The lawn mower stays in the garage, too dirty for “his” shed. So much for why I wanted the shed. If I dare go in there, and am even more aggressive and actually want to store something in there, it better be clean and put up neatly. I’ve been given my orders that we aren’t just going to clutter up “his” shed. I was in Sam’s Warehouse Sunday when my phone rang. It was “him”. He needed a nice mat for “his” shed. See why I need Friday off…renovations, painting and maybe power washing the front steps too. I think the bubble bath is beginning to sound better all the time! John is doing much better. He has decided that he really can’t eat everything any more and that small meals are better for him. Think that is exactly what the doctor told him, but it took awhile to realize it is best. The great lover of prime rib even has some doubts about red meat being a wise choice. In San Francisco he loves to go to Scomas, it’s tied with riding the cable cars. Now Scomas is almost all seafood which has not been my favorite food. But recently I’ve been a PAGE 3 JUST FOR OPENERS OCT 2008 ISSUE #120 Spouse’s Corner (continued) few places where I had some seafood that was good. In fact when I went to the fall conference that I usually attend in Asheville this year, I ate seafood every night, so Scomas, here I come!! John usually goes to Asheville with me, but did not this year. He was missed, and not just because he packs the car when I’m in my last class and picks me up right outside the door so we can race home in time to get the “girls” out of the kennel. It was fun taking an hour to get to the interstate about 10 miles away as 600 accountants (most Type A personalities) all were leaving the conference at once and I did not have that front door advantage. At least his cousin also attends the conference and I had someone to eat dinner with on the big stone porch overlooking the mountains. John gave up bananas for quite awhile, something he use to eat every day. Well, he’s back into that daily treat, so he expects me, the banana pudding chef, to be able to predict the riping time table and make sure he always has perfectly ripe bananas. When you go through the express check out in the grocery store, sometimes you speak to the person watching everyone, as I did this evening. Then, it’s really, really hard to go back shortly after checking out because you forgot to get some green bananas. But I did…who needs pride or a feeling of being in control, just go back and get labeled as an idiot…much better than hearing John say that he can’t believe I didn’t get more bananas as some are yellow, some are spotted and we need green ones!! One good thing about the poor economy is that John who is notorious for trading vehicles often and once getting a little car I wouldn’t even ride in, is stuck with his Expedition. I am stuck with mine too, but I really like it. And we certainly need one when we head for JFO 2009. Hopefully whoever inherits the mess as our new president can fix everything fast! Our life sound pretty crazy for a couple that doesn’t have any children, no soccer games, baseball practice, band, etc. And it is, but one good thing that John and I actually agreed on is that the “girls” would not go out in the fenced in yard without one of us with them. They love the yard and follow me around on week-ends until I “finally” take them out. They even know certain things I take out there, books to read, the phone, a little white bowl for some snacks and bucket to carry it all. When they see one of the “cues” being picked up, it is a wild dash to the door to let the fun times begin. Last night I picked up my book to go to the chiropractor in case I had to wait and they thought it was “yard time” (can’t even say “yard” in this house.) And don’t’ make the mistake of using that little white bowl to mix up something you are cooking, it’s the “yard” bowl. So while John is surfing eBay, talking to JFO friends and taking breweriana trips, I have read more books than I have in years, sitting inside the Gazebo that John built for which I am so grateful. Wish our JFO friends could sit in the Gazebo with us, compare opener tales, laugh and enjoy time together. But even if you can’t come to North Carolina, you must come to JFO 2009. Especially the past month many good beer openers have been offered for sale. Corkscrews have been slow as far as good quality pieces are concerned. Something that always helps the openers on eBay is when a collection is offered for sale and Bob McNary’s collection is being offered along with some select pieces from Bill McKienzie’s old collection. Lots of good openers were offered by many different sellers. Maybe those new eBay rules aren’t so bad. Maybe the bad economy is forcing people to sell those “cherry” items. Its looks like a lot of JFO members will have a good Christmas. “F” lot that included a F-2, F-5 and F-17 with the lot realizing $150.00 in another eBay Live Auction. These Dr. Pepper lots had to be someone’s collection as they included a lot of hard to find styles. Another Bill McKienzie opener sold, a F-21-1 Walters, and brought $65.00 (it went to my collection). I thought I was doing good in the “F”s when I got a nice F-12-3 Diamond Spring for $8.00 and tried to follow it up by buying the F-12-1 Cleveland & Sandusky but someone ran me over in a wheelchair from Bloomington, Il. Oh well maybe next time. Nothing very exciting sold in the “G”s, “H”, “I” or “J”s and the “K”s saw one good sale (for the seller anyway) of a Leading the way this quarter for “A” types were an A-17 K-14-1 Drewrys at $150.00. In the “L” types the first notaDr. Pepper (offered in an eBay Live Auction) and a A-45- ble was a bottle shaped with the opener dropping out of the UL Griesedieck Bros. St. Louis. The A-17 sold with a B- bottom and a supposedly legit label advertising Spearman 24 Dr. Pepper opener and realized $350.00 and the A-45 Brewing Co. of Pensacola, Fl. The seller, airborne306, is sold for $324.99 and bought by Jim Osborn as he closes in the same guy who sells the N-5 “Fantasy” knives with deon having all of the “A” types with beer advertising. The cal stickers put on the handle plus several other styles. The A-45 came off of Bill McKienzie’s 1988 JFO Display from person obviously has lots of blank openers and decals. Its the St. Louis convention that won Bill second place. A “buyer beware”. At least 24 L-2-1 Anheuser-Busch bottle nice A-15-UL German-American from Buffalo brought corkscrews sold this quarter from a high of $81.90 to a low $120.49 and a nice A-17-30 Gund from LaCrosse, Wis. of $22.75. Must be some new blood just wanted the style. I felt http://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/an-interview-withlucky to get an O-516 Starr X (on the neck) ad opener for beer-and-soda-bot $36.65. The two previously selling examples both brought over $200.00 each on eBay. A phone interview with your Editor, enter the link above for The Collectors Weekly web site. Beer “P”s saw many nice examples sell on eBay but of note were two “P-19”s from my home state of North Carolina. One advertised “Pride of North Carolina” whiskey from Hamlet, N. C. and brought $155.00 and the other from my hometown of Winston-Salem advertising “The Casper Co.” and it brought $113.00. Nice prices for some good “wood” pieces. Jeb Burruss got another nice Bill McKienzie St. Louis corkscrew, a P-73-2 Anthony & Kuhn, for the good price of $86.21. A nice type to own, a R-4-1 Iroquois “Lighter”, sold for a very reasonable $87.00 Has anyone seen another Anheuser-Busch Malt Nu(from the Bob McNary Collection). trine knife? Pearl handles, missing Stanhope and pen It seems with the ICCA Auctions (see ad next column), not blade has been replaced. From Bill McKienzie’s foras many nice corkscrews are being offered on eBay. High- mer collection. lights this quarter were a U. S. Chinnocks 1863 Patent Iron T-Handle selling for $2,504.79 and a U. S. 20th Century Syroco Golden Knight selling for $2,738.00. Corkscrew selling like openers goes and comes in cycles and with many corkscrew club members going to the CCCC Convention in Chattanooga, Tn. and with the ICCA Convention being the following week in Williamsburg, Va. (hosted by JFO Member, Paul Luchsinger), I would assume they were saving the “good stuff” for these two conventions and not selling on eBay. Despite its many new rules and policies, eBay is still the best source for openers in general and for the most part corkscrews (unless Don Bull is selling a collection). As we go to press only the second known M-3-42 Seitz “slider” in very nice condition is being offered for sale. It will be interesting to report the results in January. Keep looking, happy bidding and hopefully happy results unless you are going against the “old redhead”. Someone did a nice job but an opener manufacturing company would never have covered up part of the ad with a rivet. I paid $53.00 on eBay as a conversation piece. The A-21-UL Narragansett Beer finger spinner is a recently made ―brass‖ openers. A few have turned up on eBay but don’t go crazy bidding. If they made a few they probably made a lot! John Cartwright sent in this B-23-10 Golden Glow ―You-Pay‖ spinner with the original envelope that came from the Golden West Brewing Co. The above R-7-2 Aurora Brewing could possibly be a ―Fantasy Opener‖ ??? The brand does not fit a 1940s-50s time frame when the cast iron pretzel opener was made. Anyone have information to prove one way or the other? Handle of a F-12-UL ??? Diamond Spring. Reads ―Best for the Home‖. F12-3 reads ―Best for the Name‖. Does Anyone have a F-12-3 Diamond?
