Our hometown residents gather for our annual Community Picnic, Memorial Day Parade, Taste of Waynedale and more. You can feel the excitement as everyone seems to have a little more pep in their step in anticipation of each community event. People come from all over Indiana to see and
participate in our community activities that continue to grow in attendance
from year to year.
Waynedale has many unique qualities that make it different from any other place in the world, but the most interesting aspect is tradition. Waynedale
was named and founded in 1921, until it was annexed into Fort Wayne in
1957. But as Waynedalers love to keep tradition, fifty-five years later, most
still refer to the area as Waynedale than Fort Wayne.
Also kept in tradition are our multi-generational family-owned businesses, who have continued to do business in Waynedale since their start. The
community businesses structure is self-sufficient, providing literally everything the average citizen needs. As many of our businesses are within walking distance of our residential neighborhoods, most people don’t have to
travel far to find what they need, right here in Waynedale.

features that Waynedale has to offer. Within these pages you will find our
map, community history, resident resources, local schools &
churches, featured “hot-spots” and activities, as well as a directory of Waynedale businesses. It has been diligently created
through the efforts of Waynedale.com volunteers. Be sure to

Waynedale is nestled on the South / Southwest side
of Fort Wayne. The community is defined by the Saint
Marys River to the East, Airport Expressway to the
South, Smith Road on the West side, and Nuttman
Avenue on the North end. A trail of businesses on our
main streets connect the many neighborhoods inlaid
within Waynedale’s boundaries. Waynedale is often
regarded as a hometown with everything residents
need, just minutes away from the bigger city.

A History Of The Community

The farmland that once comprised the area of Waynedale, and
indeed all of Wayne Township, though
fertile, was also highly alkaline. During the Pleistocene period a vast sea
covered the region of northern Indiana. While it flourished, billions of sea
creatures died and left a rich deposit
of limestone, which would later be
instrumental in the building of Fort
Wayne and the surrounding areas,
including Waynedale. This limestone,
when quarried, provided an excellent
base for concrete. The accessibility of such an inexpensive building material would become a contributing factor in low building
costs. The region covering Wayne Township has been glaciated
at least three times. The last glacier receded about 10,000 years
ago, which left a moraine running southwest toward Roanoke.
For hundreds of years, the local rivers and lakes served
as the highways for travel, and those who commanded them
were in control of all trade. Native American traders and guides
brought travelers from central Canada through Lake Superior,
Lake Huron, Lake Erie, up the Maumee and the St. Marys Rivers, through this portage, then down the Wabash and Mississippi
rivers to the Gulf of Mexico.
The first town to be platted in Wayne Township outside of
Fort Wayne’s city limits was Lewisburg. Waynedale was platted
several years later and was located near the original Lewisburg
plat. On February 15, 1921, the land was sold to Abner Elzey.
The only residence in the original plat was the Cunnison farmhouse, the site that is now occupied by Umber’s Do-It-Best Hardware. The original bounds of Waynedale were McArthur Drive on
the south, Old Trail Road on the east, Lower Huntington Road on
the north and Beaty Avenue on the west.
Waynedale represented the dream of Elzey for a community in which anyone could build a home to his own design and
enjoy suburban life. This unincorporated town of approximately
3,000 residents was situated about three miles southwest of Fort
Wayne on State Roads 1 & 3, and was founded by Elzey on February 15, 1921. On a cold December day in 1920, while standing
on the southeast corner of the Lower Huntington Road and the
present Old Trail Road, Elzey pointed to the southwest toward
the Cunnison farmland and proclaimed it an ideal location for a
community. The town built on the location and its surrounding
area stands as a memorial to its founder. Naming the community
was difficult. At first, Elzey had intended to name the community
after his only daughter, Ilo, but this idea was dropped. And since
those living in this area spoke of Fort Wayne as “Wayne,” he
chose that as part of the name, using the name of his son “Dale”
as the other.
Newspapers have also helped strengthen and maintain Waynedale’s community identity. The first edition of The
Waynedale News came out on September 2, 1932. The name
of the paper at that time was The Waynedale Press. Arden McCoy was the editor, and the paper consisted of a single sheet
measuring 15 by 10 inches. Noble’s Home Store was the main
advertiser, listing Hershey Cocoa at one pound for 17 cents and
Camay Toilet Soap at five cents per bar. Potatoes were 7.5 cents
a peck and 25 cents per bushel. In a small corner of that first
paper was a note from the local businessmen, which read: “This
is surely a big moment for we ‘old timers’ of Waynedale. This is
the first edition of The Waynedale Press and is something quite
beyond our fondest dreams. We wish the owner success and
pledge our support morally, physically and financially”.
A pivotal moment in Waynedale’s history occurred in 1957,
when the community made a final decision on the community’s
status as to whether it would be an independent city or a part
of Fort Wayne. Early that year the move to annex Waynedale,
which had been in the talking stages for some years, took a positive turn. On June 25, 1957, the Fort Wayne City Council voted
unanimously in favor of an annexation ordinance. This measure
meant the taking of 5.27 square miles of the southwest area,
boosting the city’s population by nearly 6,000 persons.
Through it all Waynedale has managed to survive and prosper. It was annexed into Fort Wayne in 1957 and although it is
now part of the larger community of Fort Wayne it has maintained a sense of individuality. The principal occupation is no
longer farming but the values that were developed on the farm
have carried through to an urban-style of life where a person can
still build the house of their dreams and raise a family in a safe
community.

The Wayne Township Trustee’s Office

Fort Wayne provides several programs to
help Township residents, who have suffered
a temporary setback and cannot meet their
basic needs. Our goal is to counter the cycle
of poverty by giving those in need a “hand up”
and moving them from “assistance to independence.” The Trustee’s Office also maintains a high level of community involvement by
participating in many community events such
as the Waynedale Memorial Day Parade and
Waynedale Picnic. The boundaries of Wayne
Township include all of the Waynedale area.

- Township Assistance: provides help for
our residents who are temporarily unable to
pay their housing and/or utility bills. Income
and eligibility guidelines must be met.
- Prescription Medication Assistance:
can pay for medications or help with copays for eligible clients who do not have
the resources to meet their prescription
medication needs.
- The Employment Department: provides
employment training classes and assists
with job searches as a requirement for
clients who are receiving township assistance and are able to work.
- Workfare Department: Wayne Township
clients, who are able to work, are required
to ‘give back” to our community by performing an assigned number of hours through our
Workfare Department at non-profit or government agencies.
- Payee Program: for persons who have
been deemed by a physician to be unable to
manage their financial affairs. This program
ensures that the basic needs of Social Security recipients are met.
OUR COUNCILMAN - 4TH DISTRICT
The Waynedale community is seated on
the Eastern half of Fort Wayne’s City Council 4th District.
Our City Councilman has the responsibility of passing ordinances, resolutions,
orders and motions for the City’s government. Along with those responsibilities, the
council also is in control of the City’s property, finances, and appropriation of all money
spent on behalf of the taxpayers.
As an elected official, our City Councilman is entrusted with the duty to provide the
ways and means to ensure the safety and
security of citizens of the City of Fort Wayne
/ Waynedale and work to maintain and/or
enhance a high quality of life.
Regular sessions are held on the 2nd
and 4th Tuesday of each month at 5:30

bury their loved ones.
- Clothing Bank: maintains a clothing bank
to provide clients, particularly those applying
for jobs, with appropriate clothing. Clothing
availability depends on donations.

In Waynedale we find neighbors and

their families. The area’s rustic setting provides a superb location for outdoor activities.
Our parks and nature preserves are within
walking distance of most residences in the
community.
Two trails that are close to the Waynedale
communitiy available to the public to run,
walk, bike, and enjoy. The St. Marys Pathway
extends along the West side of the St. Marys
River and runs through Foster Park. The Ardmore Avenue Trail, spans the West side of
Ardmore Avenue, from Lower Huntington Rd.
to Airport Expressway.

In 1928 Noble’s Home Store made room in a corner and
acquired an Allen County Public Library depository. Today, the current library is located on Lower Huntington
Road and has been recenty expanded and updated. It

Chief Richardville House 5705 Bluffton Road
Chief Richardville understood the importance of the Southwest shores of the
St. Marys River. This is where the tribe made their home and where the government in 1827 built his home on his own government reservation. Recently rennovated, it is one of the oldest buildings in Northeast Indiana.
Miami Indian Heritage days programs are held at the Chief Richardville House
from 1-4 pm on the first Saturday of the month, May through November. Sponsored by the History Center, admission for each Saturday event is $7 adults and
$5 students and seniors. History Center members and children ages 5 & under
are free.
Hanson Observation Deck West Sandpoint Road
Ever feel the ground shake under your feet? Chances are it’s the Hanson Aggregates quarry operations.
Waynedale has a rich history of mining due to its unique
geological features.
The Hanson Observation Deck is open to the public, offering a breathtaking view of the quarry in action. The
deck is safely enclosed with fencing. To get there, follow
Sandpoint Rd. West, the Observation tower will be visible on the left side, 2 minutes past Ardmore Ave.
Stone Lake Scenic Neighborhoods East Waynedale
Waynedale’s Eastern neighborhoods, Lake Shores and Stone Lake, boast
beautiful scenic views abundant with wildlife. Many of the homes in this area
are settled on man-made lakes and ponds created by a flooded quarry and
overflows. Throughout the area are connecting trails that outline the lake and
ponds. It is common to see fishermen, bikers and walkers enjoying the quiet
neighborhoods listening to the songbirds and enjoying the sights.
Although the scenery trails and water are not open to the public, residents of the
neighborhood associations enjoy access to the area.

TASTE OF WAYNEDALE
Every March the “Taste of Waynedale” fundraiser is held by Kingston Residence at their community located at 7515 Winchester Road.
This fundraiser brings in local restaurants and businesses to offer samples
of a variety of food or drink; perhaps a house specialty or seasonal and new
items. Some vendors provide coupons and literature about their eatery. The
event also boasts a silent auction, in which all of the items to bid on have
been donated by local businesses.
The intention of this fundraiser invites community members to enjoy all of
the great food Waynedale has to offer. A Waynedale “win-win,” it raises
money for community organizations, feeds guests and gives the area businesses an opportunity to showcase themselves to the public.
Taste of Waynedale 2011
The sun may not have shone outside
on Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011 at Kingston
Residence, but it was shining inside as an
array of delicious smells wafted through the
3rd annual “Taste of Waynedale”.
The “Taste of Waynedale” has become
increasingly popular over the past years.
This year, individuals of all ages gathered
to sample some of the tastiest area cuisines
from an amazing 25 vendors from in and
around the Waynedale area. These vendors
provided over 80 different varieties of food
that spanned all realms of the imagination.
There was no possible way ones appetite
could not be satisfied.
The celebration was not all about food
though. The gala not only supports local
businesses but strives to promote them in
the Waynedale area, yet gives a tremendous
amount back to the community. Businesses
that didn’t have food-type products still participated in the event. Many simply promoted
their business and support by offering products or a service for the Silent Auction. The
Silent Auction has become very successful
and this year 52 merchants came together
to raise over $2,800. The proceeds of a remarkable $8,500, from ticket sales and the
Silent Auction, will go to Community Harvest
Food Bank and Waynedale.com.
Given the success of the event, there’s
no reason to think that next year’s “Taste of
Waynedale” will not only continue to impress
but support the community and satisfy appetites once again.
WAYNEDALE MEMORIAL DAY PARADE
Every Memorial Day, this parade begins at 9am from the
Waynedale United Methodist Church parking lot and leads
South following Old Trail Road to Prairie Grove Cemetery.
The public is invited to join the parade or watch from the
sidewalks. The Waynedale parade brings over 3,000 residents and visitors together to see this historic yearly event.
In Waynedale we most importantly remember those who have
given their lives for our freedom. Supporting our troops and
families, hundreds of people proudly wave flags up and down
Old Trail Road for the Memorial Day parade.
After, the parade crowd walks to Prairie Grove Cemetery to
observe the 21-gun salute, playing of the National Anthem by
Wayne High School, and a presentation honoring those who
have fallen with the traditional laying of the wreath.
THE WAYNEDALE PICNIC-IN-THE-PARK
In late August, the Waynedale Community gears
up for its annual Picnic-in-the-Park. It takes place
at the Waynedale Park which is located at Elzey
and Koon Street, south off Lower Huntington
Road.
This annual “old-fashioned” free to the public
picnic is designed to bring neighbors together
for the celebration of Waynedale. It boasts entertainment and DJ music for all, with children’s
games and a crafts table for 0-13 year old kids,
and bingo for adults. The event provides free hot
dogs, pizza and drinks along with other donated
snacks. The Waynedale Picnic is an effort supported by many businesses, some neighborhood
associations and the many friends of Waynedale.
This event receives an average 1500 visitors
within its 5-hour span. Door prizes are given
away throughout the day for everyone.
All donations collected go directly into supporting
next year’s picnic.
Businesses take up booth spaces to show community representation by the company or organization. Many of the booths give away coupons,
promotional items and hold activities.
The picnic is our way to support our families and
