Chapman, of Cambridge, GloucestshIre, England, an nounced in the June ANCESTORS WEST. When it was found 2nd date coincided with dates of the Santa Barbara Old Fiesta and the that the August Spanish Days Summer Courses on Community and Local History at UCSB, Mr. Chapman rearranged his schedule so that he would arrive on July 31 and depart on Wednesday, August 6, going direct to Salt Lake City to set up the exhibit booth of the Federation at the World Conference at which he is also one of the scheduled speakers. Included in the exhi bit are the 1979-1980 ANCESTORS WEST quarterlies, the Shelf List of the Gledhill Library, published by SBCGS and the Santa Barbara Historical Society, and a sample of the Presidio notepaper with the Russell Ruiz drawing. Many members of the Society participated in arrangements, entertain ment and furnishing of housing, Including Mary Ellen Galbraith, Ike and Joy Bonilla, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Stevens, guests from Ventura and Santa Maria, Nancy Cole, Burr Coryell, Karen Heritage, Bernice Mendillo, Fr ank Smith, Weston Kinsley, Alma and Carl Lauritsen, Marie LaBreche,Vir ginia and James Paddock, Sylvia Hanna, Arlene and John Doty with a chi cken barbecue at their Winchester Canyon home picnic area, Amy and John Marwede, Frank and Ruth Norris, Harry Titus, Frank Harville, Bette Root, Victor South. About 75 attended the August 2nd lecture, and some 25 or 30 a dinner on Monday evening at Harry'sPlaza with its array of enlarged early Santa Barbara movie-day photographs. Reports should be forthcom ing at the September meeting when this quarterly will be distributed. Mr. Chapman proved to be an able and informative speaker - by profes sion a nuclear physicist and much younger than many anticipated. With delightful humor, he called out attention to Americanisms of English name8 - Berkeley, pronounced burrkley not Barclay, Hertford pronounced Hartford, Hugenot pronounced In the French manner with a silent "t",etc. Had he known he night have added Methuen, the birthplace of your editor, in England Meth-wen, in Massachusetts Me-thu-en, with emphasis on the second syllable. He also called attention to the fact that in England the general secretary is the principal officer - the equivalent of presi dent in America. There the^president is a figurehead, appointed for rea sons of social or other prestige. Announcement of the August 2nd afternoon meeting in the Faulkner Gal lery of the Santa Barbara Public Library was made in the Unne issue of ANCESTORS WEST. At that time SBCGS had no knowledge that the Summer Seminars at UCSB would include on that very day sessions open to commun ity residents. Our member Patricia Meade White was one of the special ists invited to meet the Seminar leaders on August 1st; probably because of her interest in Irish history and the fact that Alan Rogers of North Ireland was to be one of the speakers. He too was scheduled to go to Salt Lake City for the World Conference, as was Professor Bloxham of Brigham Young University. Announcement has been made in the August 10 issue of the Santa Bar bara News Press of a projected History Fair to be held at UCSB in the Spring of 1981. Co-directors of the project are Thomas Fuller, associ ate director of the UCSB program and Gayle Olson, a doctoral candidate and former high school teacher. People who would like to work with the staff or with students, toward the exhibition, are urged to contact Fuller or Ms. Olson at the UCSB history department. We trust be a generous response by Society members. there will 77 SANTA BARBARA COUNTY MARRIAGE RECORDS - 1881 (Copied by Amy Marwede) Place Names abbreviations! The solution of the puzzle came from an unanticipated source, disclosing other California Batchelders. One of the legatees in a will of a Santa Barbara resident bore the name and lived in San Francisco. She and her husband proved to be much interested in California history. They submitted material relating to Capt. Levi Leathers Batchelder, who first came to San Francisco in 1847 and was owner and master of his own ship, the brig "Reindeer"; made" several trips back to Portland, Maine (his home) and returned in 1852 with his. family. Retiring from active sea life, he entered the stevedoring and rigging business in .the old Niantic Building; which stood at Sansome and Clay,- then part of the "bay". 6'2" tall and normally weighed about 240 lbs. He was He died Sept.27, 1883. Also a.1933 newspaper clipping, depicting "Salt Water Will" standing at the wheel of the old barque, "Mary Dollar", his home "on the Oakland mud flats. Capt. W. H. Batchelder, grandson of Timothy and Nancy (Leathers) Batchelder, and son of Capt. Timothy and Fide lia (Batchelder) Batchelder, was so known to distinguish him from a cousin, also named William, known as'"Fresh Water Will". A search of the probate record in the Santa Barbara court house disclosed tha Santa Barbara resident had been buried in San Mateo County; a creditor's claim revealed there had been a re-cre mation of a Richard (indicating he was a son); the will named the widow, Mary W., a daughter Doris (Mrs. Lelancey Lewis, of Menlo Park, and a son, Kittredge, Los Altos. - Reference to the 188S Bachiler-Batchelder family history, by Tierce, disclosed that George Aiken Batchelder. vta's in the 10th gen eration of descent from the Rev. Hanover, Ohio, 1818; d. Santa Barbara Aug. 8, 1886. Married Annie James, daughter of Samuel L. James. In 1853, financed by sister, widow Lucy A. Brown, drove sheep from Licking Co., Ohio, encountering heavy losses, joining at the California border Thomas Flint and Llewel yn Bixby from Maine. Combined flocks brought to So.Cal. Hollistered wintered in the Goleta Valley, having ob tained grazing rights from Nicholas Den and unsuccessful ly attempted to purchase land.' Took flocks, doubled in number by lambing, north to San Justo grant in San Benito Valley. After death of Nicholas Den in 1862 Hollister was able to acquire possession of property from heirs and trustees and in 1869 moved to Glen Annie Ranch, having sold for about $500,000 the northern property to a Home steaders Association which gave the name Hollister to the location. He offered $10 an acre for 5,000 acres, believ ing it could not be refused. The widow and Den heirs then of age accepted and the trustees for the minor child ren , without court approval, agreed to transfer their interests, resulting years later in recovery of the prop erty by the Den heirs and their attorney, Thomas B. Bishop of San Francisco. Col. Hollister built and operated the Arlington Hotel in Santa Barbara, managed during his many years of ownership by Dixey W. Thompson. DEN Nicholas The Den family is included in the 1852 census (ANCESTORS WEST, March,1979, p. 11) with Nicholas, 39, Ranchero, and his wife Rosa (daughter of Daniel Hill) 26 and 5 children. Eventually they had 11, all but one alive at the time of his death in March,1862. The oldest Catherine, known as Kate Den Bell, wife of John Stewart Bell of Los Alamos,in October 1876, learning that Charles E. Huse had petitioned the Santa Barbara District Court to wind up the Den trust, consulted the San Francisco attorney, Thomas B. Bishop. The Winchester Canyon property had jbeen purchased from the Den heirs who were of age and its title was confirmed to the Hollister estate. COOPER Elwood named for Thomas Ellwood (1639-1713), an English author who read for the blind poet Milton, was born of colonial Quaker stock in Lancaster, Pa. 1829; married 1853 Sarah P. Moore of Philadelphia, an authority on ferns. They lived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, for 8 years, then returned to New York in 1864. In 1868 he made a solo trip to the West Coast as a tourist. In April while en route to Portland, Oregon, he encountered Col. W. W. Hollister in a stage coach station in San Juan Bautista. With Hollister acting as his agent, and with financial assistance from the weal thy wife of Oliver Cutts, his business partner in Haiti, he bought 2,000 acres for $22. an acre from the Den heirs, a strip 7/8 mile wide extending from Kate Den Bell's Las Armas Ranch (site of the future Ellwood oil strike) to Al fonso Den's ranch at Coal Oil Point( the Devereux Ranch School property), between Glen Annie and Winchester Can yons. His main interest was olive culture. 400 of his level 86 acres were planted to assorted fruit trees. In 1872 he had an orchard of 7,000 olives. He also set out some 12,500 walnut trees, making him one of the state's largest growers for several years. The trees being threatened with destruction by black scale, he imported "ladybugs" from China and was successful in combatting the affliction. Droves of wealthy tourists wintering in Santa Barbara were attracted to his olive oil mill. The most lucrative crop was his Japanese persimmon or chard. He also was the first American nurseryman to propagate and distribute eucalyptus seedlings on a com mercial basis in California. His tree planters were mostly Scots. Ellwood Cooper and his financial partner, Mrs. Hannah Cutts, were named as defendants in the suit brought by the Den heirs against Huse. He elected to stand by his friend Hollistei? during the first trial, but thereafter entered into a compromise whereby he turned back to the Den Estate the portion of the ranch lying between the county road and the ocean, excluding 160 a- cres of eubalyptus seedlings; received a quitclaim deed of the remaining 2/3 of the ranch in Ellwood Canyon, which included his extensive persimmon, olive and walnut orchards, olive mill, home and other improvements and was also granted a perpetual right of way to the sea shell beach used for picnicing by the family. Scotsmen About 1872 six Scotsmen from Aberdeenshire came to work on the Ellwood ranch: James SMITH, William N. HENDRY, John RUTHERFORD, William BEGG, Jim MILNE and John McCLAREN. RUTHERFORD Stephen Stephen Rutherford followed his brother John, making the Glasgow-Goleta voyage later in 1872. He walked down to Carpinteria and then back into the Goleta Valley, finding work at Glen Annie Ranch. In 1874 he bought 100 acres on the south side of what is now Hollister Ave. and in 1875 sent to Glasgow for his sweetheart, Agnes Lawrie. 6 children were born in the house at La Patera and two, George and Lawrie, killed in the battle of Argonne Forest, in the large redwood home built in 1888 on Dos Pueblos Canyon land bought from G. C. Welch in 1884. Mr. Ruther ford operated the ranch until 1917 when he moved to Santa Barbara. There he purchased 123 acres between San Rogue and Alama'r Ave., which had been part of the Ontare ranch of Dixey W. Thompson. Rutherford Park subdivision was laid out with curving streets, designated Calles, radi ating from Argonne Circle, named in honor of the battle. His own home was located at 201 Calle Palo Colorado, named for the redwood tree planted in his front yard. There he died June 19, 1939, aged 91. At the time of his death many of the lots remained unimproved and unsold. SEXTON Richard K. Richard K. Sexton, originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, brought his wife and 5 children by steamer from New York to San Francisco. Moved to Amador County, where the Drought of 1864 destroyed his entire nursery stock. Relocated in Petaluma. Leaving the two older sons, William and Joe, in charge he came to Santa Barbara to investigate land 37 in Goleta. He bought three contiguous blocks in the south western part of Santa Barbara, bounded by West Montecito, Castillo Streets, West Beach and the Mesa bluffs and con SEXTON Joseph structed a two-story redwood house at 229 Castillo St. He also bought 100 acres, lying east of San Jose Creek, from the Hill heirs, paying $2,200. Sold for the same price in 1869 to his son, Joseph, who in November 1868, at age 26, brought nursery stock and a 120-lb sack of Peruvian wal nuts, imported from Chile, to Santa Barbara and established a nursery at what is now Pershing Park. On Thanksgiving Day, he married Luoy Ann Foster, then 16, dau ghter of Isaac and Roxanna Foster. Isaac Giles Goster, a 49'er, in 1853 moved his family by covered wagon to Califor nia, and after a visit to Goleta Valley in May 1868,moved to the Santa Barbara area. Lucy while attending Santa Bar bara College boarded during the week with Joe Sexton's par ents. Joe and Lucy had 12 children, born between 1871 and 1888. In 1869 Joe sold 750 of his seedling walnuts in Car pinteria and transplanted 250 on 40 acres of the tract pur chased from his father, fronting on Hollister Ave,selling November 18, 1869, 60 acres to J. D.Patterson. 60 of these trees bore soft- shelled nuts. These were moved to a special experimental grove, one producing a nut which Sexton regarded as suita ble for commercial use. Other trees were budded from it, creating a new variety known as Sexton or Santa Barbara Soft Shell, the basis of Goleta's walnut industry.. Joe had the largest fruit-drying and sulphur-treating house in the Goleta Valley. In addition to stocking fruit and wal nut seedlings, Sexton's Nursery had an extensive selection of exotics and ornamentals. In 1874 he introduced the Nor folk Island or star pine, after obtaining a single burlapwrapped specimen from a sea captain in San Francisco. The best known star pine is Santa Barbara's "Tree of Light"the Christmas tree at the corner of Cairillo and Chapala Sts. One sample of each new tree and shrub was planted in the front yard of his own home. Sexton also originated the pampas plume industry from grass grown from seeds imported from Argentina. Goleta Valley became the world supplier of this unique product, much in demand in London, Hamburg and Berlin. Between 1890 and 1895 Sexton exported half a million plumes annually. He died August 1,1917, aged 75. FENZI Dr. Emanuel Orazio Fenzi, a Florentine horticulturist, came Dr.Emanuel to Santa Barbara in 1894. He propagated the Francheschi name chang- flame tree. The semi-tropical plantings of acacias, euca- ed to FENZIlypti, pittosporum, eugenias, palms, hibiscus and other exFrancesco otics for which the Riviera is famous are largely tributes Francheschi to his influence. He established a downtown nursery. In 1904 changed his name to Francesco Francheschi Fenzi and bought 40 acres of hilltop land which he developed into a nursery and arboretum. His home built in 1909 is now part of a city park. He died in Libya in 1923, in 1912,when 70, having been called by the King of Italy to supervise an ex tensive horticultural program in colonial Libya. 88 THE OHIO LAND GRANTS Since many of the Society members have ancestral links with ear lier generations in Ohio, it seems appropriate to present maps show ing the principal early day land subdivisions and the present loca tion of archival material. The first explorations by Europeans were made by the -French. La- Salles' discoveries date from 1667. The territory which is now Ohio was in dispute between the French and English until the Treaty of 1763, whereby the French assigned the "Great West" to the English.By the Treaty of 1783 Great Britain relinquished her right and interest in the Northwest Territory. The United States assumed control, ack nowledging claims made by various states as to ownership, but not as to jurisdiction. VIRGINIA MILITARY LANDS (1784) - a body of lands lying between the Scioto and Little Miami Rivers, bounded by the Ohio River on the south and Auglaize, Hardin and Marion Counties on- the north.Virginia agreed to relinquish her claims to other lands northwest of the Ohio River, reserving these to satisfy the claims of her state troops ser ving in the Continental army during the Revolutionary War. The dis trict was not surveyed into townships of any regular form. Any indi vidual who held a Virginia military land warrant could locate where ver he chose, taking land in any shape he desired wherever the land had not been previously located. There was probably more litigation between holders of adverse titles in this district than in any other part of the state. The acreage was about 4,204,000 acres. CONNECTICUT WESTERN RESERVE (1786) - 3,840,000 acres, situated in the northeast quarter of the state, between Lake Erie on the north, Pennsylvania on the east,-the parallel of the 41st degree of north latitude south, and Sandusky and Seneca Counties on the west. It is surveyed into townshipf of 5 miles square. FIRE LANDS (1792) -. Carved out of the Western Reserve. G.ranted as a donation to certain "Sufferers by Fire" in the burning of 9 Connecticut towns in raids by the English led by Benedict Arnold. CONGRESS LANDS (1786-1820)-Sold to purchasers by the immedia-te officers of the general government, under existing laws as enacted by Congress. Surveyed into townships of 6 sq. mi. each at expense of the national government, then subdivided into sections of 1 mile square, each containing 640 acres. Section 16 of every township was perpetu ally reserved for the use of schools, to be leased or sold for the benefit of schools under the State Government. All others could be purchased in sections, fractions, haves, quarters or half quarters. Land district offices were located at Marietta, Steubenville, Wooster, Zanesville, Chillicothe, Cincinnati, etc. SEVEN RANGES (1786)- First survey made by the Federal government. Constitute a portion of the Congress Lands. OHIO COMPANY'S PURCHASE (1787) -1,500,000 acres lying along the Ohio River, purchased from the Federal government In 1787 by Manasseh Cutler and Winthrop Sargeant.who hailed from the neighborhood of Sal em, Mass. and were agents for the Ohio Company, formed in Mass. for the purpose of a settlement in Ohio. Section 16 in each township was set aside for support of schools, Section 19 for support of religious institutions and two 6-mile townships granted for the use of a college. This is where the present Ohio University at Athens is located. DONATION TRACT (1792) situated in Washington and Morgan Counties 100,000 acres in the northeastern corner of the Ohio Co's first pur chase. 89 The Ohio Land Grants SYMMES PURCHASE (1794)- Purchased by Judge John Cleve Symmea of New Jersey, located in the southwestern corner of Great and Little Miami Rivers and bordering on distance of 27 miles, contained 311,682 acres, the State between the Ohio River for a at 67 cents an acre. Section 16 is reserved for school purposes, Section 29 for support of religious institutions and one 6-mile square township for college purposes. Miami University at Oxford is result of this reservation. FRENCH GRANT (1795) - Congress donated a tract of 24,000 acres in Scioto County to French people swindled out of their money by a land company which, in realtiy, held no lands. An additional grant of 1,200 acres was made in 1798, the first grant having been insufficient to supply the demand. UNITED STATES MILITARY LANDS (1796)- 2,500,000 acres east of the Scioto River in the central part of the State, appropriated to satis fy claims of officers and soldiers of the Revolutionary War. Divided into 5-square mile townships, then into quarter townships of 2 1/2 sq.mi.,each containing 4,000 acres. Some later subdivided into 40 100-acre lots to accommodate soldiers holding warrants for 100 acres. MORAVIAN LANDS (1787-1796) - Three small tracts of 4,000.acres each, originally granted by the old Continental Congress in July 1787 to the Moravian Brethren of Bethlehem, Pa. for the use of Christian ized Indians of Ohio living on the land. Grant confirmed by Act of Congress June 1,1796.Located on Muskingum River in Tuscarawas County. ZANE'S TRACTS (1796-1802) - Three separate tracts of 1 square mile. One on the Muskingum includes the city of Zanesville, River where city of Lancaster opposite Chillicothe. is located; one on third on east Hocking bank of Scioto Grants provided Ebenezer Zane would open a road from Wheeling, W. Va., to Maysville, Ky. In 1802 3 other 1-mlle-sq. tracts were granted to Isaac Zene.on King's Creek,in Champaign County. REFUGEE TRACT (1798) - Set aside by Congress as site for new homes of British subjects in Canada and Nova Scotia who had given help to the American colonies during the Revolutionary War. The state Cap itol and much of Columbus are located on old Refugee Lands. Claimants were required to show they had lived in Canada prior to July 4, 1776 and had been forced to flee their homes because of aid given the Colo nies during the War and had not returned to Canada to live prior to Nov. 24, 1783. 67 claimants were awarded 50,080 acres, mostly In tracts of 320,640,1280 and 2240 acres. About half was claimed; the rest was for not sold at the Chillicothe land less than $2 an DORHMAN'S GRANT (1801) Arnold Henry Dorhman, In consideration of office to the highest bidder, but acre. 6-mile township, 23,000 acres, granted formerly a wealthy Portugese merchant shelter and aid to American cruisers In Lisbon, and vessels of war during the Revolutionary War. Located in southeast Tuscarawas Co. OHIO became a state in 1803. Feb. 19,1803 Congress approved the Constitution and admitted Ohio to the Union as the seventeenth state. Until 1810 the seat of government was at Chillicothe, in Zanesville for two years, and again in Chillicothe until 1816, when Columbus was made the permanent capital. Ohio was admitted without determination of its northern boundary. THE MICHIGAN SURVEY was land claimed by both the Territory of Mi chigan and the State of Ohio. A compromise was finally reached in 1836, when Michigan was given some 9,000 sq.mi. north of Lake Michigan fi>r Indiana territory of less than 1,000 sq.mi taken by and Ohio. 90 Principal Land Subdivisions Imposed on Present Map of Ohio THt MICHIOAM I CCfuact SURVir % C£.8*°r^ =^sSgp^ i_r^j V..: .. j •»»»«• I IUMCQCM j — t ,i ~t i *t 1 CU i OOturtOM THAT* THt rmtttCM auutr 91 Ohio Network of American History Research Centers u PL ^,. s In 1970 the Ohio Historical Society fo rmed the Ohio Network of American History Research Centers which provided for Ohio's historlcal and archival material to be stor ed in the two large his- torical libraries, Ohio Historical Socle ty.and Western Reserve Historical Society, and six state univer sity libraries, thus dl- viding the state into eight districts, In 1974, the Ohio Genealogical Society adopted the same geograp hlcal divisions and elected a VicePresldent to represent each di strlet.
