Mnemonic Vocabulary
Tricks
Chapters 5-12
Ludicrous
Ludicrous means to
be very foolish.
The singer Ludacris
looks quite foolish
on this cover with
his enlarged head
and the misspelling
of the word “the”
Ineffectual
Ineffectual means not
producing or able to produce
the effect you want. If your
plan is ineffectual, then you
need to put your brain in
effect to figure out a better
plan.
Jeer
Jeer means to shout insulting
words at someone: to laugh at or
criticize someone in a loud and
angry way.
Instead of CHEERing for the
team positively, Maggie decided
to JEER at the players.
Inarticulate
Inarticulate means not being
able to express ideas clearly
and effectively in speech or
writing. Articulate sounds like
'article + ate'. An article in a
magazine or newspaper must
be 'clear and fluent in what they
say' - not unclear or inarticulate.
Leviathan
A leviathan any large sea monster or creature.
Leviathan = Levis is a monstrously giant company. Nothing
is larger than Levis.
Clamor
Clamor means a loud and confused noise.
Clamor sounds a little like hammer. Hammering makes a
lot of noise.
Mutinously
Mutinously means
one is disposed to,
engaged in, or
involved in a revolt
against authority;
rebellious.
In the X-Men movies,
the Mutants are
constantly rebelling
against authority.
Crestfallen
Crestfallen is defined as sad, dispirited or discouraged.
Molly was crestfallen when the last of her Crest toothpaste
had fallen on the ground so she couldn’t brush her teeth
before her big date.
Impervious
Impervious means incapable of being injured or impaired
Impervious = impenetrable
Enterprise
Enterprise is defined as a project undertaken or to be
undertaken, especially one that is important or difficult or
that requires boldness or energy
The car company enterprise was a risky enterprise for
the creator to begin since there are many other competitive
rent-a-car companies.
Glowered
Glowered means to look or
stare with sullen dislike,
discontent, or anger.
Adam’s girlfriend glowered at
him because he didn’t buy her
flowers for Valentine’s Day.
Rebuke
To rebuke is to express
sharp, stern disapproval of
something.
Many people reBUKE the
idea of using NUClear
weapons for war.
Demure
Demure is characterized by
shyness and modesty;
reserved.
Demi Moore is demure
because she is a very quiet
and reserved actress
Fervor
Fervor is a great warmth and earnestness of feeling.
When you have a FEVER your forehead becomes quite
warm.
Corpulent
Corpulent is defined as having a
large, stout, or fat body
corp (corpse = body) + plent (plenty) =
plenty of body ie., fat
Saunter
To saunter is to
leisurely walk or stroll.
Your old AUNT
SAUNTERS in the park.
Compelled
To compel is to force or drive,
especially to a course of action.
Max compelled Jake to come with
him and pelt rocks at Dylan.
Luminous
luminous is defined as radiating
or reflecting light; shining; bright.
LUMIN rhymes with HUMAN, and
humans depend on the bright and
luminous sun to survive.
Myopia
NOTE: THIS WORD WILL NOT BE ON THE TEST.
Myopia means nearsighted.
Sniveling
To snivel is to weep or cry with sniffling.
Sniffle and Snivel rhyme: When one is
crying too much, or sniveling, he or she
begins sniffling.
Quavered
Quavered: to shake
tremulously or tremble.
Quaver is one letter away from
quiver. Both mean to shake or
tremble.
Parried
To parry is to ward off (a
thrust, stroke, weapon,
etc.); avert.
Parry sounds like "Harry"
Potter who wards off the
curse from Voldemort
Talisman
A talisman is a stone, ring, or other
object, engraved with figures or characters
supposed to possess occult powers and
worn as an amulet or charm.
Frida thinks the tall man is quite
charming.
Acrid
To be acrid is to be sharp or biting to
the taste or smell; bitterly pungent;
irritating to the eyes, nose, etc.
Remove "r" from acrid and it becomes
acid. Acid is always bitter in taste and
when smelt its pungent too.
Cordon
Cordon is a line of police, sentinels, military posts,
warships, etc., enclosing or guarding an area.
Cordon sounds like cornered: "Police cornered off the area"
Elephantine
Elephantine means to be
huge, ponderous, or clumsy.
Elephants are known for
being very large animals.
Epaulette
An epaulette is an ornamental shoulder piece worn on
uniforms, chiefly by military officers.
