The Shadow war - Warhammer World
The Shadow War 29th–30th October The Horus Heresy was the Imperium’s darkest hour. Horus, greatest of all, turned his back on the Emperor and led a bloody rebellion in a bid to rule the Galaxy in the name of the Dark Gods. The Space Marine Legions, once the most respected and admired of mankind’s warriors became figures of terror as the Traitor Legions rampaged across the galaxy, the darkness in their souls growing with every victory. In the end, Horus and his rebels were stopped, but the galaxy lay in ruins and the Imperium has never been the same since. THE SHADOW WAR At this weekend, we will be waging war along one of the battlelines of the Horus Heresy. Though the Heresy began at Istavaan and is said to have ended with the death of Horus on Terra, there were many long years of brutal and bitter warfare as the galaxy was torn apart by the forces of the Imperium. This campaign weekend focuses on a small section of space just outside of the Segmentum Solar, a region where for over 6 years the armies of the Emperor and Horus engaged in full-scale military actions. Along this front armies from all Legions were inevitably drawn, even if the bulk of their strength was elsewhere. Legionnaires on training exercises, recruitment patrols, diplomatic envoys and more besides meant that virtually every military organisation in the Imperium saw action along this vast theatre of operations. One such sector of space was known as Quintillus, one of hundreds of sectors that were fought over by the two armies, but notable in that the fighting here was amongst the closest ever seen in the Heresy. We will be visiting this warzone over two days to see who stands triumphant at the end – the forces of the Rebel Warmaster Horus, or the armies of the Master of Mankind. RETRIBUTION – BOOK 6 OF THE HORUS HERESY SERIES The majority of this Campaign is taken from material from the Horus Heresy series book 6 “Retribution”. It details certain aspects of the ‘meat’ of the war between the loyalists and the secessionists. In order to get the most out of this Campaign, it’s advisable to get a copy of this book – it contains the missions we will be playing, along with the deployments and is also a fantastic book to boot. If you don’t have a copy of book 6, then don’t worry, we will be providing all the information you will need to play your games at the weekend, but if you want to try a few practice games beforehand, you’ll benefit hugely from having this book. QUINTILLUS The sector of space known as Qunitillus is a small solar system that has a typical array of habitable planets within its borders. Planet: Argus Class: Agri-World Straetgic Value: Primus Mission: Denial (pg 182 of Book 6 “Retribution”) Deployment: Clash of the Line (pg 178 of Book 6 “Retribution”) Planet: Cartheginus Class: Refinery Strategic Value: Tertius Mission: Bad Blood (pg 181 of Book 6 “Retribution”) Deployment: Search and Destroy (pg 178 of Book 6 “Retribution”) Though this arid planet has little in the way of material and mineral resources, it is a fertile planet containing many square miles of grasslands, perfect for growing crops and nurturing the vast herds of wildlife that are required to keep the armies of the Imperium fed and nourished. Though the capture of the Forge World is of the highest priority, Horus was well aware of the need to keep even his mighty gene-enhanced soldiers fed and therefore the capture of this planet would prove necessary if his war of secession were to continue. Cartheginus began life as a simple trading planet – one of many used by the nascent Imperium as a distribution centre of sorts. This is where the vast resources required to prosecute the Great Crusade are sent in order to be marked for use by certain Expeditionary Fleets. Horus had long used his preeminent influence to ensure his own Legion had the best of everything, from rations to munitions. This meant currying favour with the mortals in charge and ensuring that they too benefitted from his patronage and it was because of this that the planet declared for Horus almost as soon as they heard of his seccession. Listening Station Audus Mission: +++Mission Parameters to remain secret until deployment+++ Deployment: +++Operation Details to remain secret until deployment+++ A stealthed listening post, this place has gone utterly silent in the last year. Both sides, eager to make use of the highly advanced detection equipment located within, have sent an elite strike team to discover what happened to the former masters. Little do they know what lies in wait in those darkened hallways... Planet: Alpha Primus Class: Forge World Straetgic Value: Absolute Mission: Challenge (pg 184 of Book 6 “Retribution”) Deployment: Dawn of War (pg 178 of Book 6 “Retribution”) The most valuable planet to the forces arrayed within Qunitillus is the Forge World Alpha-Primus. Why this planet holds such sway is due to the nature of what it produces; Titan class weapons and parts of the mysterious technology that allows such larger war machines to generate void shields. This Forge World declared for Horus early on the Heresy, but due to its close proximity to an Astartes recruitment center, it was swiftly brought back into Imperial compliance by a contingent of Imperial Fists.. With the arrival of Horus and his armies however, its future is now far from certain. The retribution of the Imperium was terrible to behold and left this once affluent world as a crater pocked ruin, a grim and silent message to the traitors – the hammer would fall upon them next, when the time was right. This planet stands as a living reminder that it is the Emperor, not Horus, that rules the Galaxy. The attackers are looking to capture it as a point of pride, whereas the Loyalists wish to keep the planet as the Emperor demanded - a barren and lifeless rock. Planet: Traigo Class: Death World Strategic Value: Tertius Mission: Hunter/Hunted (pg 180 of Book 6 “Retribution”) Deployment: Ambush! (pg 179 of Book 6 “Retribution”) This planet is a grim and unholy place. A gravitic anomaly has left this planet frozen in time, incapable of rotating on its axis, or even orbiting its pale sun. No-one knows how this happened, or what prevents the planet from continuing on its natural course, but what is known is that one half is a scorched, uninhabitable wasteland and the other is cold unforgiving environment born of blackest nightmare. Ruins of previous colonies litter the dark side of the planet like pebbles on a beach and lurking horrors prey upon the unsuspecting in cramped and shadowed streets. Life here is harsh and cold and only the most murderous and hard-bitten humans survive, and even then rarely past their teens. Though there is little of strategic value here, new Astartes must be forged from somewhere, and this has long been a recruiting world for such warriors. Though many traitor Primarch’s refuse to recruit from anywhere save their homeworlds, even they see the sense of denying such a resource to the Loyalists. EVENT ESSENTIALS System: Warhammer 40,000 using the Horus Heresy expansion and rules set. A NOTE ON PAINTING AND BASING: At registration we will ask you if your army is fully painted and based. If it isn’t don’t panic! We will do our best to give you the time and space you need to get your models finished before your first game. As we don’t allow anyone to play with unpainted or unbased models, but we understand that life gets in the way sometimes, we will do our best to help you get them up to standard. If you have a model which is unfinished, then we politely ask you to remove it from the table, as we are obliged to protect the experience of every attendant - we all want to play against fully painted armies, and this event is designed to give everyone the opportunity to do just that! All miniatures in your collection must be produced by Games Workshop and be fully assembled, painted and based. Each model must fully represent what you have presented on your army lists. These armies should be selected from the appropriate Horus Hersey publication. As virtually every army is represented at Quintillus, you can take whatever you like. CAMPAIGN RESULTS – YOUR GAMES MATTER! Nothing gives a campaign more flavour than the results of previous battles affecting the final outcome. Depending on how you fare in previous battles will give you significant advantages in the future battles. For example, if your army survives the horrors of the Listening Post, your ability to intercept enemy communications will be greatly enhanced. This could mean, for example, that your opponent’s successful reserve rolls must be re-rolled, or suffer a -1 penalty during the final game. We will let you know exactly what these bonuses are at the beginning of the weekend, and will be on hand in the form of a “Campaign Roster” which we will hand to you in order to allow you to track your results over the weekend. It will also form a cool souvenir from the weekend too. All of this leads to the final game, where the fate of the sector will be finally decided – will it remain in the hands of the Loyalists, or will it fall to the forces of the Warmaster? FAVOURITE GAME VOTES Favourite Game Votes are simple - just pick the player you enjoyed playing against the most that weekend. It’s a great way to acknowledge a really fun game, opponents with whom you had a great rapport, or maybe it was just that their army looked fantastic. Votes are taken at the end of the weekend, so please show your appreciation of your favourite opponents. Whichever team earns the most Favourite Game votes will receive the Legion Champion award at the Award Ceremony.
