View from the shows
I
t is true that visitors to the two most recent rental events – The Rental Show in Orlando,
US, and the UK’s Executive Hire Show – were generally more positive in their outlook than
they had been a year ago.
Visitor numbers in Orlando were actually significantly higher than in Atlanta in 2009 - even
if the actual size of the exhibition had been downsized by around 30% - and if few of the
big rental companies were buying much equipment there was still some evidence of smaller
companies investing in fleets.
The prognosis for the North American rental market remains pretty poor in the short term,
with most of the major renters and manufacturers predicting a flat first half of the year
with any recovery starting in the second half of the year. The aerials sector in particular is
looking difficult, with big projects started before the crash now ended and little evidence of
machines breaking ground on major new jobs.
Likewise in Europe, there are plenty of people willing to forecast a slow first half of
the year, and anecdotal information from contacts at the Rental Show even pointed to
deteriorating conditions in some markets, such as the Netherlands.
The latest ERA/IRN RentalTracker survey for the fourth quarter of 2009 paints a brighter
picture, with the graphs all heading in the right direction (see page 13). But it is too early yet
to use the results to herald any kind of recovery.
Still, we hope that this month’s issue will provide some stimulating reading. We interview
Speedy Hire’s Steve Corcoran about his vision to create a £2 billion rental group by 2020,
and we talk to Godwin Pump’s president, John Paz, about how he has successfully built a
massive pump rental business in the US.
Our product features this month are on rental software and compressors. The software
feature highlights many features that are aimed at increasing the efficiency of rental
companies, including a new ‘rules engine’ from Result Group that helps non-expert depot
staff ask the right questions when they are talking to customers.
The Bauma exhibition is coming up fast, of course, and we have an 11-page guide to many
of the most important product launches planned for Munich, concentrating on compact
machines and other equipment of interest to rental companies. Let’s hope that Bauma gives
the European market a shot in the arm.

Emeco to exit Europe and
downsize in US
A
ustralian heavy equipment
rental company Emeco is to
close its European business
in July 2010 and consolidate its
US activities into its Canadian
operations.
The decisions follow a strategic
review by new managing director
Keith Gordon. The closure of the
Netherlands-based European
operation will entail a restructuring
charge of A$9.5 million and the US
consolidation will have a one-off
charge of A$20 million.
Emeco, which had earlier decided
to downsize its European business
following poor results, said the
decision to exit the business entirely
was taken because of continued
underperformance, the likelihood
of continued poor returns, and the
fact that the European presence
offered no benefits for its machine
procurement activities.
Emeco expanded its European
heavy rentals operation in early
2007 when it acquired Netherlands
businesses Euro Machinery and sister
firm Euro Rental. Euro Machinery’s
founder, Harry Haverkotte, and his
son Roy joined the Emeco Europe
management team in 2007, but Harry
left in mid-2008 and Roy has now
departed as well.
The office will be closed by early
July and the machines on rent
in Europe will be sold or shipped
to Australia. The business had 17
machines on rent in Emeco’s fiscal
2009.
In the US, Emeco will close its
Houston, Texas head office and its
depot in London, Kentucky, with North
American operations consolidated at
Emeco’s existing office in Edmonton,
Canada. The North American head
office will be in Edmonton, led by
Ian Testrow, previously president of
Emeco Canada.
Mr Gordon said the long term

Hertz Equipment Rental Corporation
(HERC) is to start renting equipment
in Saudi Arabia through a joint
venture with Saudi based Dayim
Holdings Company Ltd. Dayim is an
investment company formed in 2006
to create partnerships with foreign
investors.
The joint venture - between HERC,
Dayim and Hertz Corp - will rent
and sell equipment and tools to
construction and industrial markets
throughout Saudi Arabia. HERC has
not said where the rental locations
will be and when they will start
operating.
JCB and Volvo Construction Equipment have
signed a deal under which they will co-operate
on the design and manufacturing of skid steer
loaders and compact tracked loaders for
distribution globally under the two brands.
JCB said the first mono boom Volvo branded
machines will be produced at JCB’s Savannah,
Georgia facility by the end of this year with
sales starting in 2011. Volvo will shift skid
steer production from its Pederneiras facility in
Brazil to Savannah over time. The deal will give
Volvo a range of models - including tracked
units - that it can sell worldwide, and free up
production capacity at its Brazilian facility for
backhoes and other products. For JCB, the joint
venture will provide additional volume for its
Savannah facility.

not sustain Emeco’s operations there.
The company’s rental and sales fleet
in Kentucky will be sold or relocated

“The equipment rental market in
Saudi Arabia is expanding rapidly,
driven by heavy construction and
opportunities in the petro-chemical
industry”, said Mark Frissora,
chairman and chief executive officer
of Hertz Corp, “Our joint venture
with Dayim Holdings will enable HERC
to tap into growth throughout the
country.”
Dayim’s executive chairman HRH
Prince Khalid bin Bandar bin Sultan,
said; “HERC is a global leader in the
field of equipment rental, therefore
we believe that it is ideally placed
to serve the Kingdom’s aggressive
expansion plans in all relevant
sectors.”
The move into the Middle East is
not a surprise since HERC is already
active in China where it has two
rental locations. It has said in the
past that it was looking for growth
opportunities in new markets. It joins
Riwal, GAM and Speedy Hire as major
western rental companies entering
the region.
Meanwhile, Hertz Corp said it
will open 10 new equipment rental
locations during 2010 to tap into
markets emerging from recession
and to support key industries such as
petro-chemicals.

Gehl Company is launching in North America three of the compact, articulated loaders that Gehl
Europe has been selling for the last two years. The three models - designed and built in the USA by
Gehl - are the 140, 340 and 540, powered by Yanmar Tier IV-certified engines with outputs from 23
to 47 hp (17 to 35 kW). Gehl Europe has been selling these machines - plus two additional mid-range
models - for the past two years. It previously sold German-built Weidemann articulated loaders in
Europe, but following the merger of Wacker (owner of Weidemann) and Neuson, Gehl started to
develop its own range.

Father and daughter team Jim and Ruth McAdam have formed a company to market their new Multihog
multi-purpose utility vehicle. The pair, based in Dundalk, Ireland, designed the unit over the past
18 months and are now marketing it to a wide range of markets including rental companies. Sales
director Ruth McAdam said; “Its range of applications – from grass and hedge cutting, road sweeping,
road gritting, cleaning as well as snow blowing - is almost infinite, and sets it apart from any other
comparable machine on the market”. The engineer behind the Multihog is father (and managing
director) Jim, who previously spent 20 years with Moffett Engineering, the developer of the Moffett
Mounty forklift. The Multihog is a 4WD, hydrostatically driven unit powered by a 65 kW Yanmar diesel
engine and has an unloaded weight of 2800 kg. It has an articulated chassis and measures 3.4 m long
by 1.85 m wide by 2.54 m high. One early customer is James Byrne of Dromad Hire in Dundalk, who said;
“The Multihog’s slopeability and its ability to be used with different attachments in all seasons is what
differentiates it from any other machines, and makes it so appealing to hire shops.”
Quick-hitch safety
guide launched in UK
A new guide to the safe use of quickhitches has been published in the
UK outlining the responsibilities
of all those involved in the use of
construction equipment.
The guidelines, the result of a
partnership between the Health &
Safety Executive and the Strategic
Forum’s Plant Safety Group, were
launched at the recent Executive Hire
Show by the Construction Plant-hire
Association (CPA), which has led the
drafting of the document.
The document follows accidents
involving semi-automatic quickhitches, which resulted last year in a
voluntary ban on the hitches, which
is being observed by the suppliers.
However, the guidelines consider
the use of all types of quick-hitches;
manual, semi-automatic and fullyautomatic. Colin Wood, the managing
director of the CPA, told IRN that
while the initial focus was on the
safety of semi-automatic hitches;
“It became clear that it wasn’t
just a question of banning semiautomatics. As you investigate it, you
find that there are accidents with
fully-automatic hitches as well.”
“The bottom line is that nothing is
full-proof – even second generation
fully-automatic hitches need to
be maintained. We are insisting
that even with full automatics the
operator has to come out of the cab
to check it”, said Mr Wood.
The document outlines the
responsibilities of both managers
and operators in the use of quickhitches.
Mr Wood said that operators
needed to be aware of the dangers
and their own responsibilities. “If the
hitch falls off, the operator is the
first port of call...it needs to be made
clear by companies to operators.”
The 47 page document can be
downloaded at no cost from the CPA
website (www.cpa.uk.net).

The new
Husqvarna K 760
– a better choice.
No other power cutter in the world is so packed with
features that boost efficiency and reduce the environmental
footprint as the new Husqvarna K 760.
The K 760 has the new Active Air Filtration™ allowing
up to one year’s running time without filter service. Its X-Torq®
engine lowers the emissions up to 75 % and the fuel consumption by 20 %. It has a dust and slurry proof starter mechanism
and easy handling with low vibrations, allowing full time
use, without operator fatigue.
The new K 760 is a further development of the popular
K 750 and therefore has more knowledge and experience
built in than any other power cutter in the industry.
LESS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
WITH X-TORQ®
If all power cutters in the world were equipped with X-Torq®
engine technology:
– 13.500 tons less hydrocarbons would be emitted per year.
– 19 million litres less two-stroke fuel would be used per year.
Estimated world population of petrol power cutters 750.000 of which 50 % is estimated to have conventional
two-stroke engines. X-Torq® means reduction of hydrocarbons per year and machine by 36 kg resulting in
reduced fuel consumption per year and machine by 51 litres.

rather than noticeable growth.

Balance charts
The balance charts quantifies the
difference between positive and
negative opinion on a question.
For example, for the chart on Fleet
Time Utilisation on the right, the
-5.3% given for the final quarter in
2009 is the difference between the
approximate 35% of respondents
who said utilisation was getting
worse and the 29% who said it was
getting better.
s in our previous survey for the
third quarter of 2009, the 4th
quarter ERA/IRN RentalTracker
shows that Europe’s rental sector
is still far from starting a robust
recovery but the outlook is steadily
improving.
Surveyed at the end of December
and start of January, rental companies
still showed a negative balance of
opinion on business conditions, with
slightly more people reporting a
deterioration than an improvement,
although this negative balance is
now at just -7.8% compared to -41.2%
last summer and -15.1% in the third
quarter.
The trend for utilisation is also
heading in the right direction, with
the negative balance improving from
a rather severe -25.8% in the third
quarter of the year to just -5.3% in
the final quarter. Around 35% said
utilization was falling and 29% said it
was increasing, with a third seeing no
change.
We also have our first ‘positive’
reading since we started the survey
last year, with more people planning
to increase fleet investment in 2010
compared to those who will cut
spending. In fact, almost a half of all
respondents said they would keep
spending at 2009 levels, while 21%
said they will invest more and just 13%
will spend less. That represents a very
positive shift compared to October
2009 when the situation was almost
reversed.
Regional analysis
The survey also reveals some quite
different views country by country
(see bar charts on page 14), reflecting
the variation in the severity of the
economic downturn. French renters,
for example, are the most pessimistic
about prospects for business in a
year’s time, while renters in Benelux,
Italy and the UK are more optimistic.
In terms of business conditions at
the end of 2009, it was again French

The arrow continues to point to the ‘upturn’ section
of our Barometer, but its short length indicates that
the level of sentiment is not strong. The fact that it
is in the upturn sector of the chart reflects the view
that things will be better in a year’s time. Our Q4 survey
showed, for example, that 35.4% of respondents think that
business conditions will be better in a year’s time, compared to
18.6% who think they will be worse. A sizeable majority, however
(46%), think conditions will be unchanged.

renters, alongside those from Spain,
Italy and the Benelux countries, who
were seeing the worst conditions.
Elsewhere, views are pretty neutral.
There is general agreement on
utilisation rates, with a negative
balance of opinion (more seeing a
deterioration than an improvement)
in the Benelux, France, Italy, Spain and
the UK, with only the Nordic countries
having a more positive view.
For fleet investment, those most
likely to spend more in 2010 than in
2009 include France, renters in the
Nordic region and also – just – the
UK. Rental companies in the Benelux
region and in Italy seem to be more
cautious.
Sector analysis
Results for individual sectors are
more difficult to analysis this quarter
because there were a smaller number
of respondents than in previous
reports (the survey was undertaken
over the Christmas and New Year
holidays). However, there was
sufficient data to report on General
Rentals, Powered Access and Power/
Temperature Control.
Here there are big differences
in opinions: the smallish power/
TC sample were almost exclusively
downbeat about the market, with a
majority reporting lower business
levels, continued pressure on time
utilisation and lower expectations on
fleet investment this year.
General equipment rental companies
– who make up the majority of
respondents – also noted downward
pressures on utilisation and there was
also a sizeable negative balance of
opinion (-25%) on whether business
conditions were improving or not.
Good news for equipment suppliers
here though, as 46% expect to spend
more in 2010 on new fleet, as against
less than 10% who will spend less.
The powered access sector is
the most optimistic in terms of
expectations for a year ahead
(35% think business will be better,
compared to just 12% who think it
will be worse). There is also some
comfort to be had in their views on
time utilisation, with a +12% positive
balance (35% seeing an improvement,
23.5% seeing deterioration).
However, powered access renters
look unlikely to be spending very
much in 2010, with 31% forecasting a
lower spend in 2010 and 19% planning
to spend more (with half spending the
same amount as 2009).
So, it is clear that there is a
difficult market out there for many
rental companies. Difficult, but not
impossible, and slowly improving.
Let’s hope our next survey – at the end
of March – shows the upturn gaining in
IRN
momentum.

be a £2 billion business by 2020. Steve Corcoran, the
company’s chief executive, explains how they aim to do it.
INTERVIEW
The UK’s largest rental company, Speedy, wants to
Adaptation
S
teve Corcoran isn’t afraid of looking at the
rental business from first principles, nor of
acting on the conclusions. That much is clear
from the company’s recently launched ‘Project
Darwin’, which, despite the name, seems less of an
evolution than outright reinvention.
Among other things, the project does away with
the old product divisions, creates new international
and advisory services divisions, and targets the
creation of a £2 billion FTSE 100 ‘international
service company‘ by 2020. It’s a long way from
Speedy’s origins as a small tool hirer in Wigan,
northern England, where it was founded in 1977.
When asked if Speedy is still a ‘hire business’
Speedy’s chief executive responds characteristically
with a question; “Why do people hire at the end
of the day? There are three key things: to offset
operational risk, offset financial risk, and offset
compliance risk. If these are the primary issues,
would they have achieved these goals if they had
just hired equipment?
“If that’s what they are trying to achieve, then how
do we mitigate other risks from rental.” He’s talking
about operator training, equipment maintenance,
testing – “it’s beyond hire, its advisory services.”
The result is a Speedy ‘Branded & Advisory
Services’ division launched last September that will
have generated £1 million revenues by March; “We
think that can be a three figure million business by
the 2020 timetable”, says Mr Corcoran, speaking to
IRN at the company’s small corporate office in Fleet
Street in the heart of London. (The company’s main
headquarters remain close to Manchester in the
north, but the London office is handy for meeting
bankers, analysts, investors and major customers).
That’s just one example of the way that Mr
Corcoran is viewing the new Speedy, and the
Investment in Speedy’s fleet has been cut dramatically, but the
company has ambitious plans to restructure its depot network
into three different sizes of locations: Multi Service Centres,
Supercentres and Express stores.
thinking is having a major impact on the company
in more fundamental ways.
The depot network is a good case in point. Every
rental company has its own depot strategy. For big
UK tool hirers in the past, this often meant national
networks of 300-400 depots. The idea now is to have
a smaller, varied network tailored to its customer
base. In practice, this means around 20 to 30 Multi
Service Centres (MSC) catering to the demands of
its major industrial and engineering customers
and stocking the entire range of equipment,
including tools, power, lifting and material handling
equipment and access.
Supercentres
A larger number – 60 to 70 – of so-called
Supercentres is the second element of the network.
These are smaller than the MSCs and will have a
reduced stock, but still targeted at large users such
as contractors and builders working on major city
centre contracts. Then come around 250 Express
centres, smaller still and located in towns up and
down the country.
The depot terminology comes from the UK’s
leading supermarket chain, Tesco, but Mr Corcoran
says Speedy is not treating the market like a retail
business, it’s just about aligning itself to customers;
“You don’t need a network”, he says, “You need a
distribution system…It’s about understanding the
market and customer needs. We’ve talked to our
customers – asked, ‘how do we service you right?’”.
This new structure will take at least five years to
implement, and to date there is just a single MSC
and two Supercentres in operation. Many of these
will require totally new facilities. The hundreds of
Express locations, meanwhile, will largely be existing
stores from the company’s 350 depot network.
¬
Steve Corcoran has been chief executive of Speedy since 2005,
when he took over from company founder John Brown. He joined
the company in 1998 as a salesman in London.
Just as significant for Speedy is its venture into
overseas markets, spearheaded by a joint venture
in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with Carillion’s
local joint venture, Al Futtaim Carillion (AFC).
This new international business will be key
to Speedy’s growth projections in the coming
decade. Mr Corcoran, a one-time Speedy depot
manager in London who was closely mentored by
his predecessor, John Brown, says that by 2020
overseas revenues have the potential to reach
£1 billion, which will be half of the £2 billion group
target. To put that in perspective, total revenues
in the current financial year will be around the
£350 million mark.
The initial focus on the Middle East was supposed
to be Dubai, but since the crash efforts have
switched to Abu Dhabi, where Al Futtaim Carillion
is still busy. At current levels of activity revenues
could reach £10 million in the first year, says Mr
Corcoran.
“It’s building new cities, not ‘iconic’ buildings,
which we think are risky”, he says, wary of being

Self-belief
Speedy has signed a five year partnership with Al Futtaim Carillion in the Middle East. Speedy hopes that by 2020 it will be generating
£1 billion in revenues from operations outside the UK.
associated with speculative mega projects. “It’s
long term infrastructure – water, power, rails,
schools, oil and gas.”
The strategy here is to leverage relationships with
its major UK customers who are working overseas
(or overseas contractors who work with Speedy
in the UK). These relationships with big customers
have become a major priority for Speedy, not least
because these companies have grown their UK
construction market shares through the recession.
Margin pressures
He acknowledges that rental may not be as firmly
established in the Middle East as the UK, but argues
that large contractors will be forced to become
more efficient as pressures on margins increase,
a process that will accelerate the take up of rental;
“You need people who can service you properly.”
He adds that many contractors, including Carillion,
operate in the Middle East without the same number
of sub-contractors that you would typically see in
the UK. This means that major rental agreements
like the five year deal recently signed with AFC
have the potential to bring major rewards relatively
quickly.
The Carillion joint venture has started in Abu
Dhabi, but AFC operates in other Middle East
countries as well as in Northern African countries
like Egypt and Libya. Mr Corcoran says Carillion is
moving into Oman and Egypt and that Speedy could
follow them as soon as April this year.
He also sees opportunities to follow customers
to oil and gas and large infrastructure markets in
countries like Brazil, Australia and Malaysia. Long
term, he sees this kind of work as forming a third of
the international business. Developments here are
“not imminent – next year probably.”
If the £2 billion target for 2020 seems ambitious,
then consider that even as recently as autumn last
year the target date was actually 2015. It was the
depth of the UK recession that prompted a rethink
on the timescale.
The targets themselves don’t frighten him, and he
says that the UK operation has the capacity to reach
£1 billion. He mentions, for example, new offerings
such as a gap insurance service for customers covering small items of plant - that could generate
revenues of several hundred million pounds.
However, the UK recession has clearly changed
the calculations. The company’s share price – down
to around £0.30 from a peak of £3.50 in 2007 – and
losses in the first half of its current financial year
(to 30 September) illustrate the pressures that
Speedy is under in the current market.
In the recent past Speedy has been benefiting
from government spending on public works and
sectors including education and the health service,
as well as investment in the utilities sector. This
has been particularly important given the dramatic
falls in non-residential construction. Construction
represents around 50% of Speedy’s business, and
that market alone dropped by around 20% in 2009.
One big issue here is uncertainty over future levels
of government spending. However, Mr Corcoran’s
view is that the impact of falls in government
spending “is not going to be as severe as it is
“I’ve always been a bit cocky”, says Steve
Corcoran, “I’m fairly entrepreneurial: always
looking for a way of doing things better.”
His first job in rental was with Manchesterbased hire company PB Hire – a renter of
transport and small tools - where he started in
1986. PB was subsequently sold to John Mowlem
(who also owned HSS Hire at the time), and
Mr Corcoran joined Speedy as a London sales
manager in 1989 and was then appointed city
depot manager in London.
“I was finding new ways of growing the
business in the south”, he recalls. This included
the establishment of Speedy’s first lifting
and surveying divisions, “We were growing
aggressively. When Speedy floated in 2001 John
[John Brown, then the managing director] asked
me to join him on the board. When John retired
[in 2005], I got the role.”
By this time John Brown had already charted
a course to become a national player. Mr
Corcoran kept up the pace, making several
major acquisitions including Hewden’s tool
hire operation, power renter LCH, LGH (Lifting
Gear Hire), and in-house rental operations at
contractors including AMEC and Carillion.
The focus now has shifted from acquisitions
to surviving the UK recession and expansion
overseas.
suggested.” He thinks pension funds, for example,
will increasingly step in and make investments in
infrastructure. Even if public spending comes down,
he believes that there will be a way for funding in
infrastructure to be maintained.
In any case, a fall off in public spending will be
sustainable as long as private sector spending
recovers. “There are signs of housebuilding
recovering”, says Mr Corcoran, “the repair and
maintenance market is improving; education
spending is being forced through quite aggressively
– mainly private sector funding.” He recognizes,
however that private sector investment remains
depressed, although at least stabilising.
‘Silly’ prices
Speedy has signed
a partnership with
biometric and identity
management company Human
Recognition Systems (HRS)
to offer MSite, a biometric site
access security system. Housed in
a steel cabin, MSite has security turnstiles
connected to a biometric reader that uses
either hand geometry or iris-scanning technology
to check the identity of those entering or leaving a site.
The system, which is already being used by contractors like
Carillion, BAM, Balfour Beatty and Wates, can limit access to
those with proper accreditations as well as provide real-time
reports on time and attendance records and hours worked.
IRN MARCH 2010
IRN 03 10 Speedy Hire.indd 18
Price competition is one consequence of the
depressed demand. Steve Corcoran says prices
“have got silly. We are all really at risk of not
understanding our own costs and returns”. He says
the company is focusing on making sure its sales
force understands the value of the service they
provide, and “negotiating from knowledge”.
Speedy has cut its fleet by 20% in value terms,
which is less than the almost 30% fall in revenues
that the company reported in the six months to
September last year. Mr Corcoran says the resulting
fall in utilisation will help ensure that the fleet isn’t
overworked, particularly since capital investment
has been dramatically cut and the fleet is being
aged. Net CapEx in the current financial year will be
around £20 million, a sizeable proportion of which
has been spent on the Middle East venture.
He says that Speedy’s fleet is divided 50/50
between short term assets (needing replaced before
five years) and longer term assets that can be held
on to longer if necessary. He says it is Speedy’s
strategy to generate cash by extending the ages
of the long life assets to pay for investment to

Services division that supplies equipment from re-rental partners

revenues recently passed the £25 million mark.
maintain the short term fleet.
Rather than invest in updating the fleet, Speedy
prefers to pay down its debts (net debt stood at £141
million at the end of January). “Two or three years
ago we were saying that 100% gearing was fine”, he
says, “That’s changed, after the downturn. We think
that 50-70% is now healthy. On the basis that the
market is still subdued, our position is to err to the
50% level.” It is currently at around 55%
Generalist?
There are so many changes afoot at Speedy that
it is inevitable to ask if the company is bent on
becoming a full line, generalist rental company. It
currently goes well beyond the size of equipment of
a classic tool hirer – its gensets, for example, go up
to 1.4 MW – but Speedy hasn’t yet moved into large
powered access or traditional plant hire territory
with larger excavators.
Instead, the company has a ‘managed services’
division that sources larger equipment from other
suppliers – including Lavendon for powered access.
Turnover at the division has now reached £25
million. Mr Corcoran says this makes sense; “We
don’t necessarily need to own everything. Why not
use external suppliers for some products.”
It is typical of Mr Corcoran’s thoughtful approach
to rental that his ambitious growth target doesn’t
necessarily mean investing in every type of
equipment, or being all things to all people. Perhaps
evolution is an apt description of the strategy

At its peak, work on the London Olympics site
will bring in annual revenues of around £10
million for Speedy, which is working on the site
as part of the Construction Site Solutions rental
consortium, one of two rental consortia on the
project.
It sounds a lot, but perhaps it’s not quite as
much as Speedy hoped. “Construction started
later than we wanted”, says Mr Corcoran. “We
will not have realized the full value we expected
this year because of the late start.”
He says that rental revenues as a proportion
of total project spending will typically vary from
1% (simple projects) to as high as 9% (complex
jobs). In the case of the London Olympics he
thinks it will be closer to 2.5-3.0%.
Prefabrication has been a big element of
the project, and that has taken some rental
volume out. “There is more fixing, installation
tasks, welding, and less cutting, breaking and
grinding”, he says.
The peak for Speedy will start around April
this year when the major buildings reach the
fit-out stage, with high levels of activity being
maintained for about a year.
“The Olympics is in 2012, but construction has
to stop around August 2011”, he points out, “It
has only got another year and a half to go.”

f you think you’ve seen everything at Bauma
then you need to take another look. Of course,
seeing everything properly is just not possible,
unless you feel like making 428 stand visits every
day for seven days. (There are 3000 exhibitors
in total.)
The best you can hope for is to reach the ‘mustsee’ stands and new equipment, leaving yourself
enough time for a more speculative wander around
some of the less travelled paths.
What is ‘must-see’ depends on the kind of rental
company you are, but in this Bauma Rental Guide
we have focused on the obvious categories:
compact equipment, access and material handling,
on-site equipment (including pumps, compressors
and gensets), compaction tools and other sectors
including formwork, hand-held tools and demolition
and attachments.
It is not a completely exhaustive list of new
equipment relevant to rental, but we hope to have
brought together many of the most important new
launches.
For greater detail on specific sectors including
Heavy Construction Equipment, Aerial Platforms
and Cranes, see the March issues of our sister
publications, Construction Europe, Access
International and International Cranes & Specialized
Transport. You can pick up these magazines on the
KHL Group stand at Bauma (Stand 400 in Hall 3B).
Good luck with those stand visits…

Hitachi’s new launches will include five zero tail swing mini
excavators.
COMPACT & UTILITY
EQUIPMENT
There will be literally hundreds of new compact
machines on show in Munich. Rental people will
inevitably look to the Kubota stand for new
excavators, but the company is keeping very quiet
about what will be on show. All it would say is that
there will be two more of the new -4 series models
on show. This follows the launch last year of the first
-4 unit, the KX057-4.
Another firm favourite with rental companies is
Takeuchi. Again, the company is being a bit tightlipped about what compact models it will have on
its stand, although confirms that there will definitely
be something worth seeing. An educated guess
would be that Takeuchi will be showing a more
sophisticated version of the electric plug-in mini
that it first showed at Intermat in 2006. The target
here is for a model that doesn’t need mains power
but uses a self-contained battery system. Definitely
worth a trip to open area F12, Booth 1212/3, where
Takeuchi exhibits with its German dealer W Shafer.
Not in the compact sector, but we can say with
certainty that Takeuchi will be showing its largest
excavator yet – the 16 t TB1160W model. This is a
size up from its previous largest model, a tracked
14 t unit, and adds to manufacturer’s existing 8 t
wheeled machine.
New from Hyundai are mini excavators from its
long-awaited –9 series of machines in the shape
of the 1.6 t R16-9, 2.7 t zero tail swing R27Z-9 and
5.5 t R55-9. There will also be a wheeled model on
display, the 5.5 t R55W-9.
Of the nine new models Hitachi plans to launch
at Bauma, seven will be compact excavators. At
the lower end of the weight classifications will
be the traditional design ZX18-3 and ZX27-3,
while the new short tail-swing models are
the ZX29U-3, ZX33U-3, ZX38U-3, ZX48U-3 and
ZX52U-3.
The five other mini excavators being
launched by Hitachi are short tail swing
machines. The ZX29U-3, ZX33U-3
and ZX38U-3 are all equipped
with next generation threecylinder engines to reduce
fuel consumption, while a
new automatic travel speed
Volvo will launch four new machines at the lighter end of its mini
excavator line-up.
Case is now offering a high travel speed option on its compact
wheeled loaders.
control helps to maintain smooth handling and
stability when carrying loads. The larger ZX48U-3
and ZX52U-3 short-tail machines meanwhile feature
four-cylinder engines, although fuel consumption is
-13% lower than their predecessors.
New additions to the Bobcat range of mini
excavators include the E45 and E 50 4.5 and 5.0 t
class zero tail swing mini excavators. Both are
powered by a four-cylinder Kubota engine and come
with an ‘auto idle’ function as standard
to reduce fuel consumption
and noise at times of low
activity.
Among the new –9 series
compact machines on the Hyundai
stand will be this zero tail swing
2.7 t model.
In the compact loader segment, Bobcat will be
showing the S650 skid steer and T650 tracked
loaders, which offer a range of improvements over
the previous models. These include greater operator
comfort with a bigger cab, bigger door, adjustable
joysticks and better all-round visibility.
JCB’s latest addition is the 8 t 8085 ZTS, a zero
tail swing excavator that is a similar size to the 8080
ZTS it replaces, but which offers more productivity
and lower operating costs. Much of this is due to the
new 43 kW engine that offers more torque at lower
revs, while auto idle and one-touch idle functions
also help to reduce fuel consumption.
Volvo will launch four new machines in its compact
excavator range. These are the EC15C, EC17C, EC18C
and EC20C, replacing the existing EC15B in XR, XT and
XTV variants and the EC20B in XT and XTV variants.
New features include hydraulic hoses routed inside
the boom and simultaneous control
of slew and offset movements using
the electro-proportional roller.
All four models are powered by a
12.3 kW diesel engine.
Case launches a high travel speed
(HTS) option for three of its compact
wheeled loader models. This takes
the top speed for machines like the
121E from 20 km/h to 35 km/h. The
addition of a mechanical high
speed gear does not detract from
the precise control available
with the hydrostatic drive, with
features like inching control
retained.
New from Caterpillar is the
434E Mechanical backhoe loader. ¬

Larger equipment
The Vermeer BC1200XL brush chipper is available with two engine
options and replaces the BC1000.
In the larger earthmoving equipment sector many manufacturers
will be waiting until next year and the Stage IIIB/Tier 3 engine
emission requirements to renew their ranges. Even so, Bauma
will see many dozens of new large machines - including
Hyundai’s all-new –9 series of mini and full sized tracked and
wheeled excavators up to 52 t.
A full report on the new large sized models being launched at
Bauma can be found in the March issue of our sister magazine,
Construction Europe. This issue will be available on the KHL
Group stand at Bauma.
Luigong will launch
its 365A skid steer
loader onto the
European market
at Bauma.
ACCESS/
TELEHANDLERS/
MATERIAL HANDLING
New from JCB is the 8 t 8085 ZTS midi excavator.
As the name suggests, the machine features
mechanical operating levers as opposed to pilot
controls. Caterpillar says this is a preference in
developing markets such as Eastern Europe and
Russia, where there is a need for high performance
with simple controls.
Hidromek will unveil a compact backhoe loader
in the shape of the HMK62. The machine offers a
0.35 m3 bucket at the front and a 0.05 m3 bucket at
the back, and is powered by a 45 kW Honda engine.
New backhoe loaders will be a feature of the
Chenggong stand, with the CG862H, CG866H
and CG866HTC on display. All come with and 82
kW engine and a range of bucket options and the
CG862H features a side shift digger arm. The
CG866HTC meanwhile has longer loader arms and a
tool carrier linkage.
New from Terex is the TA3.5SH 3.5 t capacity
site dumper. A key feature is the directional drive
selector on the steering column, which allows the
operator to change between forward and reverse
without using a manual clutch or gear lever.
Liugong’s new machines include the 777III, a sideshift version of the backhoe loader it launched three
years ago. Options include an extending dipper stick,
and the European version features a Stage IIIAcompliant 75 kW engine, as opposed to the Stage
I Weichai that can be fitted for emerging market
countries.
Hinowa is launching a high-speed
version of its HS1100 and HS1150
mini-dumpers.
The company will also be showing its 365A skid
steer loader, which is powered by a Stage IIIA
Yanmar engine.
Gehl Europe shows a selection of its AL range of
seven compact articulated loaders, now available
in North America (selected models) following their
European launch in 2008. The range comes in
sizes from 1.4 to 3.2 t operating weights and all are
equipped with low noise and low emission Yanmar
diesel engines.
Italy’s Hinowa extends its tracked mini-dumper
range with the HS1100 High Speed, a faster version
of its HS1100 and HS1150 dumpers with speeds
increasing from 4 km/hr to 6 km/hr. A new control
system provides more power when travelling uphill
and offers top speed on flat ground.
US utility equipment machinery manufacturer
Vermeer adds several new products at Bauma,
including a new stump cutter, brush chipper, drill
and compact tractor. The SC372 stump cutter,
which replaces and upgrades the SC352 model, is a
compact model – only 0.89 m wide – and is powered
by either a 28.2 kW Yanmar diesel or 26.1 kW Briggs
& Stratton Vanguard petrol engine. The unit has new
operator controls that incorporate additional safety
features.
The new BC1200XL brush chipper – also available
with two engine options, either a 63.4 kW or 82 kW
Cummins diesel engine –fills a gap in the company’s
range and will also replaces the existing BC1000.
Also on show is a new mid-compact utility
tractor, the RTX550. This “fills an important niche
for contractors who complete secondary, shortrun installations.” Powered by a 48.4 kW engine,
the tractor can be fitted with rubber tires or
the rubber quad-track system.
Finally, Merlo finds time to expand its
Cingo tool carrier range with 1.2 t and
1.6 t payload capacity models
(the M12 and M16). The M12, which
will replace the 1 t M10, will also be
offered with 9 m and 14 m aerial platform
attachments.
Merlo always likes to have something different on
its stand, and this Bauma will be no exception, with
interesting prototype telescoping aerial platforms
mounted on a truck carrier from one of its DBM
concrete mixers. The two versions will have platform
heights of 15 and 18 m, both using a boom from
Merlo’s Roto 38.16 telehandler.
Platform capacity will be 1000 kg and weighing
around 12 t they will be much simpler (and less
expensive) than Merlo’s previously shown MRP
articulated boom platforms based on a telehandler
carrier.
Also making a big impression will be UpRight
Powered Access, partly because all of its equipment
will be in the Snorkel colours of orange and white,
which is the new global colour for all UpRight/
Snorkel products.
If the UpRight blue is disappearing, then at least
the company has new machines to show, and lots
of them. First up will be the Pop-Up push-around
scissors that UpRight now has global distribution
rights to sell. Just as important, UpRight shows a
completely new generation of self-propelled boom
lifts, a new range of electric scissor lifts and three
new twin-deck construction scissors.
Merlo launches 15 and 18 m telescopic aerial platforms mounted
on carriers from its concrete mixer range.

JLG Industries will focus on its aftermarket
service – highlighting the fact, for example, that in
addition to parts for its own machines it also offers
around 5000 OEM competitor parts as well.
It will show an enhanced version of its wellestablished E300 electric articulating boom.
Improvements on the existing model include the use
of new non-marking 25x7 12 in tyres to help protect
floors, improve traction and provide a smoother
ride, and repositioned pothole protection bars to
make it easier to travel up steep ramps. Smaller
more efficient batteries (305 Ahr rather than
370 Ahr) will actually offer a 20% better duty cycle.
The company has also announced recently that
HSS Hire in the UK has been granted exclusive
UK distribution rights for the innovative Liftpod,
signaling its entry to the European market (the lift
was scheduled to be shown at the International
Hardware Fair in Cologne at the
end of February.)
Also new will be the
2906/2906L (low height version)
and 3507 compact telehandlers.
These will replace the 266 and 307
models that have been available for
several years, and were launched first
at a major agricultural show in Europe
last year.
Finally, the company will show its new
ClearSky telematics solution, following
its North American launch at the recent
Rental Show in Orlando.
Manitou, in addition to showing
several new telehandlers (see
more below) is launching a
higher capacity version of its
160 ATJ articulated boom.
RIGHT: JLG makes significant improvements
– including 20% increased duty cycle – on its wellestablished E300 articulating boom.
Terex AWP shows the new Genie GTH-4018SR telehandler.
This will not replace the original model, but the
160 ATJ+ will offer customers a platform capacity
increased from 230 to 400 kg and a larger 2.4 m by
0.9 m basket, allowing three people to work with
tools. The chassis on the ‘+’ model will be a little
larger.
German truck mounted platform specialist
Ruthmann promises a visual treat on its stand with
at least four of its new TB 270 models arranged in an
imaginative way (although it wasn’t saying how). The

lightweight TBR 200 will also be on show – the first
lightweight Ruthmann unit to have a fly jib at the
end of the boom.
The Ruthmann stand is very much worth a visit,
because if you buy a machine you will automatically
enter a draw to win one of five trips to the World Cup
in South Africa this summer.
Teupen shows its new ‘economy’ 13GT model – with
an aluminium boom – as well as an upgraded version
of its Leo 23GT, with a new crawler undercarriage
(extendible as an option) and new control panel.
Germany’s Bocker Group is adding mast climbing work platforms
to its product range.
Finland’s Dinolift, meanwhile, shows its 215XTC, the
largest of its new range of crawler mounted ‘Spider’
machines.
Terex AWP isn’t planning any new aerial platform
launches at the show, although it will have the
recently introduced Genie GTH-4018 SR Rotating
Telehandler on its stand.
Alimak Hek is launching a range of low height
landing gates to meet the requirements of the
new Machinery Directive. The gates, which cannot
be opened unintentionally and have a kick plate
to prevent items from falling, are designed to
fit all types of applications and will weigh less
than 25 kg. They are also compatible with all
brands of construction hoists, material hoists and
transport platforms.
Alimak Hek will also show a larger version of its
Scando 650 heavy duty hoists. The Scando 650 FC-XL
extra large hoist cars have internal cage lengths of
up to 5 m, 2 m width and heights up to 2.8 m Alimak
Hek believes it is the largest standard construction
hoists on the world market operating on a
single mast.
Hinowa is updating its Lightlift range of Spider

and says that Li-Ion battery systems will also soon
be available with the 19.65 and 23.12 models.
Hinowa is also adding a new Goldlift model, the
17.80 XL, which is a larger version of the 14.70 and
fills a gap between it and the Lightlift 1965. This
is a fully hydraulic model and it will also feature
lubrication-free pins.

Merlo will show a new 5 t, 18 m telehandler based
on the chassis of a 10 t handler. This machine, which
was developed first for the Canadian market, will be
extremely stable by virtue of its heavy duty carrier
and will find favour in areas such as North America,
Scandinavia and the Middle East.
Also on show will be a prototype of Merlo’s
an extremely attractive model range on offer”, says
Kramer product manager Andreas Breunig.
As far as telehandlers are concerned, Bobcat has
a new four-model range of rotary machines covering
lift capacities from 3.5 to 5.0 t and lift heights from
17.5 m to 24.5 m.
In addition to its earthmoving equipment and
cranes, Liebherr will also show two updated
telehandlers at Bauma. Both the TL435-10 and TL44510 models are receiving an upgrade – details to be
announced at Bauma.

Doosan Infracore Portable Power launches
the new 12/150 compressor, its largest
single axle portable compressor.
New from JCB is the 515-40 Loadall, which at just
1.8 m high, 2.97 m long and weighing less than 3.5 t is
the smallest telehandler JCB has ever built. Despite
it’s small size, the machine can take a 1.5 t payload
to a height of 4 m, and it also has 4-wheel drive and
steering for excellent maneuverability. The machine
can be specified with either a compact Loadall or
skid steer quick hitch.
Chinese crane giant XCMG meanwhile will launch
its first ever telehandlers at Bauma. Details are
sketchy, but the company says it will have 14 m
and 17 m working height machines on display, both
of which will be powered by Cummins engines and
feature 4x4 drive.
German material handling specialist Böcker uses
Bauma to expand its range of rack and pinion hoists,
launching its first ever mast climbing platform, the
Maxi-Climber MC 650. The single mast version has
a maximum platform length of 15 m and a maximum
carrying capacity of 3.5 t, while the twin-mast unit
can be up to 35 m long and carry as much as 6 t. The
mast climber uses the same mast sections as on the
company’s Giant-Lift and Superlift LX construction
hoists, as well as some of the same components
from the hoist cages.
In the company’s inclined ladder lift and crane
segment, there is a new compact inclined ladder
lift, the Junior HD 24K, featuring an articulating
joint at the upper end of the ladder, the first of
the Junior series to have that feature. The trailer
mounted model has a maximum lifting height of
approximately 24 m, has an average lifting speed of
45 m/min and can lift loads of up to 250 kg.
The company also plans to show an entirely new
wireless control system for its range of construction
hoists – details of the system will be available at
Bauma.
¬
In the forklift sector, German manufacturer
Jungheinrich will show the new VFG 316s – 320s
trucks, hydrostatic drive counterbalance
models in the smallest size class from 1.6
to 2.0 t lifting sizes. Replacing existing
models, the new trucks are available
in diesel or LPG versions, using a
Volkswagen engine.
Mitsubishi Equipment Europe will
have on show its Japanese developed
hybrid powered forklift truck. This
4.0-5.0 t rated truck is already
available in Japan, but will be
shown at Bauma not so much to
promote the truck but to show
manufacturers the hybrid power
system. By using a power train
comprising a lithium ion battery,
diesel engine, two induction
motors and inverters, the company
has been able to reduce by a third
the size of diesel engine required.
Mitsubishi says it will market
this hybrid power system to OEMs
who will benefit from using smaller
diesel engines and in some cases
reduce the size of the engine such
that expensive aftertreatment
for emissions reduction is
not required. Manufacturers
of excavators and aerial
platforms are among its target
customers.
Tsurumi Europe launches the NK 2-22
dewatering pump.
German compressor specialist Kaeser shows its Mobilair 43 with a new double-walled polyethylene canopy.
ON-SITE
EQUIPMENT
Doosan Infracore Portable Power (DIPP)
launches the new 12/150 compressor, its
largest single axle portable compressor.
The 12/150 has a free air delivery of 14.9 m3/
min (526 cfm) at an output pressure of
12 bar and is intended for applications
in rental, construction, quarrying and
general industry.
Also new from DIPP is the AGC200
synchronization option for the
company’s G250, G400 and G500
PowerSource generators. DIPP says it
has worked with DEIF, the generator
controls specialist, to develop the
synchronization feature, which
Doosan says will “allow specialist
generator rental companies to
manage and optimize generator
fleet modularity and thereby increase
utilization rates.”
Finally, the company launches a new
version of its 7/41 portable compressor,
with a new “Tough Top” polymer
canopy. The canopy can be
supplied in customer colours and
retrofitted to existing 7/41 units.
New compressors from Atlas
Copco include the XAS 87 kD,
which provides 5m3/min at 7 bar.
The trailer-mounted unit weighs
in at 750 kg and has been designed
with the needs of the European rental
market in mind. Robustly constructed and simple to
operate, the compact and lightweight design also
means there are no special licensing requirements
to tow it behind a vehicle.
Also new is the XAHS 237, offering 236 l/sec at 12
bar and the XAMS 287, providing 285 l/sec at 8.6
bar. As part of an introductory offer, Atlas Copco is
offering these with FuelXpert and an after cooler/
water separator as part of the standard package.
Bauma is where Atlas Copco starts to really push
its Chicago Pneumatic brand in Europe. Having
already rebranded its Irmair compressors as Chicago
Pneumatic in Europe, the company will use Bauma to
show a wide range of gensets and compressors as
well as a selection of handheld tools and breakers
and light concreting and compaction equipment.
Notable product launches will include the new CPS
7.5 compressor, produced in Belgium, and a lighter
version (by 250 kg) of the Chicago Pneumatic 275.
The unit, which uses a Deutz engine, delivers 7.6 m3/
min (269 cfm) at 7 bar (102 psi) working pressure,
and is designed for abrasive sandblasting, running
pneumatic tools and general construction work.
In the company’s generator range, expect to see

available at the time of going to press.
At Bauma 2010, CompAir will launch its new, fuelefficient range of three high-pressure portable
compressors, designed to deliver up to 26% energy
savings. See the compressor feature in this issue for
further details.
Germany’s Kaeser will show, among other
models, its Mobilair 43, the latest of its portable
compressors to be offered with the new doublewalled polyethylene canopy. The standard metal
canopied version will also still be available. Powered
by a four cylinder water-cooled Kubota turbo diesel
engine, the Mobilair 43 provides free air delivery of
4.2m3/min at 7 bar.
In the pump sector, Sweden’s Grindex adds a new
80 m head submersible drainage pump to its Master
range. The new double-stage Master SH pump weighs
less than 100 kg, making it an extremely compact
high-head pump. (In comparison, Grindex’s 200 m
head pump weighs 1 t.) Designed for applications in
underground mines, open pit mines, quarries and
tunnels, the Master SH is designed to be resistant to
abrasives in the water, with damaging material kept
away from vulnerable parts.
Bauma will see couple of new self-priming and
submersible pumps from ITT Water & Wastewater.
Centre stage will be a new range of diesel-driven
self-priming pumps, the first Flygt diesel pumps
to use the company’s patented N pump hydraulic
technology.
On show at Bauma will be the 6 in version of the
new range, with 4 in and 8 in models to follow later
this year and 10 in and 12 in units planned for 2011.
The 6 in unit will have a maximum flow rate of
92 l/sec and have a maximum head of 49 m.
Also new will be the first two-stage Flygt pump in
the 2600 series. The 10 kW rated 2660 ST uses ITT’s
Active Seal system to lengthen intervals between oil
changes and maintenance checks.
Pioneer Pumps, which can be found on the UK
pavilion, will show its new PP100 pumpset, which
offers flows of more than 200 m3/h and pressures of
3 bar. The unit can handle solids of up to 76 mm and
is powered by a Cat engine.
Also on show will be the PP150 pumpset, which
offers flows of up to 400 m3/hour at 3 bar. Again,
a Cat engine supplies the power, and the maximum
solid size is 76 mm.
The new PX80S high pressure pump, meanwhile,
can deliver 120 m3/hour at pressures of more than 20
bar. Powered by a JCB engine, the unit is designed
for dewatering and drilling applications.
Tsurumi Europe promises an “exciting package of
product launches” at Bauma, chief among them the
new NK 2-22 dewatering pump and the launch of an
innovative excavator adaptor.
The NK 2-22 is a heavy duty, high head, singlephase submersible pump with applications including
the removal of sand, wastewater and general
construction site drainage. It has a 2.2 kW motor and
can carry water over a total head of 25 m or reach
flow capacities of up to 590 l/min.
Tsurumi’s new excavator adaptor transforms a
standard excavator into a mobile pumping unit. The
adaptor on show at Bauma is designed to improve
efficiency when pumping sand, mud or slurry with
Tsurumi’s GPN series.
US/UK pump manufacturer and rental company
Godwin Pumps celebrates the 40th anniversary
of the very first Dri-Prime pump by launching two
additions to the range. The HL260M is a 250 mm by
200 mm single-stage automatic priming centrifugal
pump capable of flow rates to 910 m3/h and pumping
heads of up to 183 m. Ideal for mining a quarry
applications, the pump has a considerably higher
flow volume than the other high-head pump in the
range, the HL160.
The other new Dri-Prime is the CD500M, a 600 x
400 mm centrifugal pump capable of flow rates to
3066 m3/h and heads of 61 m. This is designed for
large dewatering applications in mining and civil
construction, and is a higher flow version of the
CD400.
Although best known for its Dri-Prime models,
Godwin also markets a range of submersible
pumps. At Bauma the company will launch the next
generation of these Sub-Prime pumps, which will be
available in sludge, trash and dewatering versions
from 0.4 to 67 kW. Godwin promises “significant
advancements” on the existing range.
The UK’s Brendon Powerwashers will show its first ever hot water
washers at Bauma.

exciter system with directed vibrator.
Wacker Neuson is expanding
its pump range with additional PS
submersible pumps, although there are
no advance details available.
UK company Brendon Powerwashers
launches its first hot water pressure
washers - the company has previously
focused on cold water models. On
show will be the top of the range
HWBBW50KP unit, equipped with a
larger pump than the three other
models in the range. Maximum water
pressures are 340 bar and flow rates
are up to 12.5 l/min.
Brendon says the washers use a diesel
fired water plate heat exchanger to heat
the water. This system, for which a patent is being
sought, uses fewer parts than a traditional water
boiler and is easily removable as a single unit
from the rear of the unit. The washers are ideal for
removing graffiti and other heavy duty tasks, and
will be around 40% more expensive than cold water
units.
Available either skid- or trailer mounted, the
washers weigh 1500 kg and can be powered by a
choice of one Yanmar diesel or three Honda petrol
engines.
Expect a big showing from one of the giants of
German construction equipment manufacturing,
Putzmeister, with new concrete pumps of all
shapes and sizes as well as innovations in some
of its less well known product ranges, like high
pressure washers.
New compact equipment will include the Mixokret
M 700 E electric screed, the smallest and lightest
Mixokret yet. The new P 718 concrete pump is
designed for fine concrete, typically for liquid screed
but also capable of pumping concrete with grain
sizes up to 32 mm. Another innovation is the SP 11
BUR plastering machine, the new top of the range
model in the Beliso worm pump range with a new 4
cylinder engine.
In the high pressure
cleaning range, Putzmeister
launches the Dynajet 800 me, a
compact electric trolley unit with
800 bar delivery pressure, making
it “the world’s most powerful highpressure cleaner in its class.”
Sokkia and Topcon – part of the same
company following the merger in early 2008 –
will exhibit at Bauma on the same stand, although
the two distinct brands remain firmly in place.
New Sokkia product at Bauma will include the
company’s new GPS receiver, the GRX1 GNSS that
will replace the 2700ISX and 1700CSX models. The
receiver, which has an integrated antenna, digital
UHF radio, GSM module, Bluetooth module and
detachable battery, will be available with two data
collectors, the SHC250 ‘economy’ model and the fullspecification SHC2500.
For the construction market Sokkia will also show
the new Triax MP500 multi-purpose laser. This is a

powered by Honda GX 100 four-stroke petrol engines
with an output of 2.2 KW at 4300 rpm. Fitted with
a 3.2 l fuel tank for extended use, both rammers
benefit from excellent stability as a result of a low
centre of gravity.
The company also continues to develop its Rammax
trench roller range and will unveil its Rammax 2500
in Munich. Replacing the RW 2000 and RW 2900, the
2500 weighs 2500 kg and has a working width of
either 1 m or 1.2 m.
Also new in Munich will be the AP240-2 H hybrid
hydrostatic rubber-tyre roller. With operating
weights of between 9.5 t and 24 t, the eight wheel
roller has a working width of 2 m and features a
gentle start and stop function to prevent making
ripples in the asphalt.
Ammann will debut its 11.7 t AV120X articulated
tandem roller at the show, and in so doing will
complete its heavyweight range. The company’s
final new product is the ASC170 single drum roller
with a working width of 2.1 m and a weight of 17.8 t.
New in the Bomag’s light equipment range is

compact planers, adding to the PL 500 model
launched a year ago. These have 600 mm and 1000
mm cutting widths, respectively.
Also new is a range of pneumatic tyred rollers. The
CP224, CP224W and CP274 models have compacting
widths ranging from 1800 to 2300 mm and maximum
operating weights from 21 to 27 t. These rollers have
a spacious cab with a rotating and sideways sliding
seat and steering assembly.
Weber says an innovative air filtration system on its new SRV 620
tamper will extend the service life of the engine.
SC-5. All rollers in the light series are equipped with
Bomag’s exciter system, high performance
hydraulics and intelligent vibration
control (IVC) to automatically prevent
stationary vibration or compaction at
excessive speeds.
Dynapac, part of the Atlas
Copco group and exhibiting on
the same stand as its parent, will
have several new compaction
and paver products on show.
The 400 kg class LG400
forward and reverse plate
compactor fills a gap in the
range, and has a new bottom plate
design that helps stop the plate from getting
stuck. The PL 600T and PL 1000T are new wheeled
Ammann’s AP240-2 H hybrid hydrostatic eight wheel

BAUMA GUIDE
Wacker Neuson says its new DPU
130 vibratory plate will provide
the same compaction power as
a 7 t roller.
For asphalt work, the company will launch the
Compactasphalt 2500, which will place two layers of
asphalt in a single pass.
On the massive 9000 m2 Wirtgen Group stand,
subsidiary Hamm will be a big attraction for
compaction equipment buyers, and there will be
plenty new to see. Hamm continues the roll-out of its
HD+ range of articulating tandem rollers, with new
mid-range 9 and 11 t class models joining the 12 and
14 t units launched in 2008. The HD+ 90 and HD+ 110
machines are “all-rounders” suited to motorway
construction or other large spaces.
The company is also updating its 10 model range
of CompactLine articulated tandem rollers in the
1.5 to 4.0 t sizes. The drive train is new, with Kubota
engines replacing Hatz, increasing the power on
all models with drum width of more than 1 m –
15% more in the case of the HD 13 and
HD 14 models.
One notable innovation is the new
GRW280 rubber tyred roller, a single
model that will replace the existing
range from the GRW 10 up to the GRW
24. The key feature here is a flexible
ballasting system that allows an end
user, or rental company, to vary the
weight of the machines from 10 t up
to 28 t using steel or concrete ballast.
Germany’s Weber MT uses Bauma to
introduce two new single direction vibratory
plates, the CF 2 and CF 3, and the new SRV 620
tamper. The CF 2 has a centrifugal force of 15 kN
and CF 3 provides 20 kN. Weber says the plates
distinguish themselves by offering a high degree
of operator comfort (the hand/arm vibrations have
been considerably reduced through a new guidebar) and smaller overall dimensions and a folding
guide-bar mean that they can be easily transported
in a car.
The “rugged and powerful” SRV 620 tamper has
been equipped with an innovative air filtration
system, says Weber, which means that compared
to its predecessor, there is a considerably higher
filter output, meaning an extended service life for
the engine.
Liugong’s stand will feature the 12 t class
CLG612HIII vibratory single drum compactor. The
hydrostatic drive offers infinitely variable speeds
up to 12 km/h and power comes from a Stage IIIAcompliant 116 kW Cummins engine.
Fellow Chinese manufacturer Tian Gong will
Hamm continued to expand its new HD+ range and will launch 9
and 11 t models at Bauma. This is the HD+ 90.

also display a 12 t class machine in the shape of its
YZ12G. The unit offers a choice of two frequencies
and amplitudes, and also has a hydraulic drive.
Components include a 110 kW Cummins engine, Eaton
drive lines and Rexroth hydraulics.
Wacker Neuson, meanwhile, says its new DPU 130
vibratory plate offers the same compacting power
as a 7 t roller. A key feature of the remote controlled
unit is the use of two ground plates that make it
more maneuverable.
Also in the compaction sector the company unveils
a new range of WP-series vibratory plates up to
105 kg. Wacker Neuson says the new design of base
plate means that compaction performance is good
along edges and “without damaging hot asphalt
surfaces when they are turned quickly.”
Chicago Pneumatic, which is now selling
differentiated products manufactured by sister
companies in Atlas Copco, including compaction
specialist Dynapac, is introducing new ranges of
tampers, forward/reverse plate compactors and
forward soil and asphalt plates, plus a duplex roller.
On show will be the Chicago Pneumatic MS690,
a Honda-powered, 67 kg tamper; the 400 kg class
MV480 forward/reverse plate; the MV84 forward soil
and asphalt plate; and the MR700 duplex roller.
HAND HELD TOOLS
On the hand-held side, Atlas Copco will introduce a
new generation of vibro-reduced handheld hydraulic
breakers. Four models make up the new range, the
23 kg LH 190 E, the 26.5 kg LH 230 E, the 29.5 kg LH
280 E and the 37 kg LH 400 E. The company says
that it has improved the vibration characteristics by
suspending the heavy weight handle in a dampened
pivot pin, decreasing the vibration emissions.
A new range of power cutters from Husqvarna
- the K760, K970 and K1260 – all come with an
improved active air filter that means the cutters can
work for a year before the filters need removed. The
new cutters will also use Husqvarna’s X-Torq engines
that reduce hydrocarbon emissions and use 20%
less fuel than conventional 2-stroke engines.
The company will also show a complete range
of the recently launched Diagrip diamond tool
technology, including wall and floor saw blades, drill
bits and blades for handheld power cutters.
Wacker Neuson is adding the EH 25 electric
breaker, a model that has vibration levels below
5 m/s2, allowing a worker to use it for an entire
8 hour shift.
Also new are the BTS 630 and BTS 6354 cut off
saws, replacing Wacker’s existing models. These
will feature a new air filter concept that will reduce
maintenance requirements and downtime.
ATTACHMENTS
& DEMOLITION
Danish hydraulic tool specialist Hycon will show
at Bauma its new small powerpack and 15 kg breaker
combination that it hopes will compete head on with
electric breakers. The HPP06 power pack is powered
by a 6.5 hp Honda engine and the 15 kg HH15 breaker
closes the gap between Hycon’s existing 10 kg and
22 kg breakers.
The powerpack weighs 54 kg and can also be used
with Hycon’s HH10 and HH20 breakers, a core drill
and 14 in cut-off saw.
Chicago Pneumatic launches the CP 0112, CP
0112 S and CP 0112 EX handheld pneumatic breakers,
the lightest in the company’s range. These offer
a 15% increase in performance compared to the
previous CP 0111 series. The improved performance
comes courtesy of an upgraded valve system.
Not strictly speaking hand-held, but still light-duty,
is E-Z Drill’s new 240B ‘combo’ drill for straightline drilling on a level subgrade. Similar to the Model
210B, but with the added capability of converting to
a core drill. The pneumatic unit has three speeds
and can drill diameters of up to 64 mm to a depth of
460 mm.
Doosan will use the show to unveil its new range of
DXB Breakers. The five model range will cover carrier
weights from 4 to 37 t. Features include a patented
valve system to recover energy and increase overall
performance, as well as systems to guard against
blank firing and pressure peaks.
Sister company Montabert will be introducing
its blue line of breakers, with the 1.7 t XL1700 being
shown at Bauma. The range is designed to offer
‘entry level’ units, but they still feature systems
such as blank firing protection and automatic blow
frequency adjustment. The company will also be
launching a range of four crusher buckets for 10 to
35 t+ excavators.
Bobcat will be launching a range of new
attachments, including four new skeleton buckets
for its excavators, loaders and smallest telehandler.
In addition there will be two new heavy duty grader
attachments for its large frame loaders, along with
two new lasers for either single or dual slope work.
Meanwhile the TR05 is a tilt-rotator quick-hitch
attachment for its E32 and E35 mini excavators. The
unit works with Bobcat’s ‘plug & play’ attachment
control device.
Sandvik’s latest breakers are at the light end
of the range, with the new BR111, BR222 and BR333
designed for use with 0.8 to 4.0 t carriers. Sturdiness
and reliability are key features of the units, which
are designed to accept a wide range of oil flows,
making them suitable for mini excavators skid steer
loaders and other compact carriers.
Case will be unveiling a variety of new powered
attachments at Bauma. Among these will be the
CB90S silenced breaker for 4 to 9 t excavators,
which features a large diameter tool. Also on show
will be a new scoop bucket designed for use with the
¬
Case coupler system.
Doosan will be launching a five-model range of hydraulic breakers
at the show.

FORMWORK
New attachments from Atlas Copco include the
630 kg CC 650, which replaces the CC 550. The
unit is designed for use with 6 to 12 t excavators,
and features 360° rotation for quick and easy
positioning. The combi cutter weighs in at 630 kg
and offers a cutting force of 45 t.
MB Crusher will unveil its universal quick coupling
to more efficiently connect its crushing bucket
range to carrier excavators. Through reducing the
distance between the excavator arm and the crusher
bucket the company reports improved geometry
which leads to less strain on the excavator. This is
enhanced further through the 50% weight reduction
found in the MB coupling, down to 80 kg.
Atlas Copco will be introducing a number of
new products, including the new 3 t HB 3100 heavy
breaker that features PowerAdapt, which shuts down
the hydraulic breaker in case the oil pressure is too
high. The HB 3100 is intended for use on carriers
weighing between 32 to 52 t and it operates at 160 to
180 bar and offers a blow rate from 280 to 560 bpm.
Husqvarna extends its demolition robot range
with a third model, the DXR 140, which will be the
smallest yet. The DXR 310 was launched last year and
the mid-sized DXR 250 was launched at the start of
this year.
Doka will unveil its Staxo 40 load bearing tower
framework scaffolding for shoring applications.
Based on an ‘H shaped’ frame geometry, the system
expands to allow work-deck levels to extend beyond
the scaffold and therefore beneath cantilevering
superstructures.
Doka will also launch its heavy duty wall formwork
FF100 tec, which has been designed to enable
quick forming of fair-faced concrete walls. High
load capacity components lead to a 33% reduction
in form-ties and walls up to 3.6 m high can be
constructed in a single pour.
Also from Doka will be the new DoKart for
repositioning tableforms on the same level. The
compact DoKart shifting trolley only requires oneman operation and manoeuvrability is enhanced
through its ability to move 900 sideways and turn
on its centreline.
Debuting a number of new formwork panel sizes
at Bauma is MEVA. In its heavy duty Mammut wall
formwork range, the company will unveil a new 3 m
tall panel with a 100 kN/m2 load capacity. Suited to
the construction of very high and large structures
and fast pours with flowing and self compacting
concretes, the Mammut 350 wall formwork features
Meva’s all-plastic, wood-free facing as well as a
joint system and symmetrical tie holes for a quality
concrete finish.
In its AluFix range, Meva will show its new rangetopping 3 m tall panel designed to complete the
series that already features 1.3 m and 2.6 m tall
panels.
Paschal will debut its E-Deck panel slab formwork
Montabert will be launching a four-model range of crusher
buckets.
developed for ceiling thicknesses of up to 300
mm. Manufactured from steel to suit the demands
of emerging markets, E-Deck panels are ideal for
construction projects where crane availability
is limited and where aluminium solutions are
unwelcome.
New from Peri are the PEP Ergo steel tube props,

CompAir Q&A
IRN: Is CompAir still committed to the portable
compressor market?
Frederique Gerard, marketing director, EMEA
industrial compressors, CompAir: Absolutely.
CompAir remains committed to this market and will
be present at this year’s Bauma exhibition where it
will be launching its new high pressure TurboScrew
range. Despite the recession, CompAir has continued
to invest in R&D with the design and development
of these three models; a further addition to its
well proven and successful C series TurboScrew
compressor range.
IRN: What are the general plans for the product
line?
FG: Fuel efficiency continues to be a key driver in
our new product development. At CompAir, our
development teams continue to look for new ways
to maximise performance, at every stage of the
compressors’ design – incorporating features that
achieve both efficiency improvements and cost
benefits for the user as well as meeting stringent
emissions legislation.
We have therefore developed these new
compressors to meet specific customer
demands for an easy-to-tow portable unit
that can produce high pressure air, whilst offering
low operating costs and high reliability.
CompAir adds high
pressure portables
CompAir is still very much in the portable compressor
game following its acquisition in 2008 by Gardner
Denver – the US$2 billion stock-listed manufacturer
of pumps, blowers and fluid transfer equipment
– and it will launch three new fuel-efficient, highpressure portable units at Bauma.
CompAir says the new C230TS-17, C210TS-21 and
C200TS-24 compressors are designed to deliver up
to 26% energy savings on conventional models. The
latest addition to CompAir’s established TurboScrew
C series, the three units can produce pressures of up
to 24 bar and volume flow up to 23m3/min, making
them ideal for demanding applications such as water
well and geothermal drilling.
CompAir says that compared to conventional
portable compressors, the new models deliver up to
26% better fuel efficiency with no loss in pressure,
IRN: Any change to manufacturing since
CompAir’s acquisition by Gardner Denver?
FG: There has been no change in our manufacturing.
We continue to design, develop and manufacture our
portable compressors at our factory in Simmern,
Germany.
Doosan expands
range with 12/150
Doosan Infracore Portable Power (DIPP) has launched
its largest single axle portable compressor, the
14.9 m3/min output 12/150.
The compressor’s 14.9 m3/min free air delivery is at
an output pressure of 12 bar and the unit is designed
for use in equipment rental, construction, quarrying
and general industry.
DIPP says the unit offers “outstanding” towing
stability for transport behind a vehicle, and is
durable and easily services. Powered by a Cummins
QSB 6.7 FR91440 6-cylinder diesel engine, it has a
power output of 164 kW at a full load speed of
2000 rpm.
One feature that DIPP says rental companies
will like is an intuitive, simple key-start
sequence, which makes it less likely
to be damaged by poorly trained
operators.
A bunded base is a standard
feature for environmental
protection and well-positioned
fuel tanks featuring large size fillers also limit the
risk of fuel spillage.
An optional diesel engine exhaust spark arrestor is
a key safety feature for hazardous area applications
and should the engine begin to accelerate
due to volatile vapours in the
atmosphere, an optional
overspeed valve prevents
damage by closing the air
intake to the engine.
In addition to the new
12/150, Doosan Portable
Power has launched a new
version of the established
7/41 portable unit, supplying
4.0 m3/min of compressed air
helping site managers reduce the cost of diesel used
and the frequency of refuelling.
Powered by a Cummins engine, the compressor
has two turbochargers powering a CompAir screw
compressor unit, with the addition of an engine
exhaust gas turbine to precompress the inlet air
before it enters the compression chamber. This
converts 5% of wasted exhaust energy into power to
create compressed air.
The compressors run at 1000 rpm when idling in
offload mode, which is equivalent to turning down
the fuel consumption by up to 58% when there is no
air requirement.
Each unit weighs less than 3500 kg, allowing it to
be towed by a standard 4x4 vehicle with no need for
air brakes.
CompAir’s portable models now come in sizes
from 1.0 m3/min up to 27 m3/min volume flow.
“We can offer the right product for a wide
range of rental applications, ranging from
small repair jobs to construction and
infrastructure projects to geothermal drilling
to name a few”, says Frederique Gerard,
CompAir’s marketing director, EMEA industrial

Bauma is where Atlas Copco starts to really
push its Chicago Pneumatic brand in Europe.
Having already rebranded its Irmair compressors
as Chicago Pneumatic in Europe, the company will
use Bauma to show a wide range of gensets and
compressors as well as a selection of handheld
tools and breakers and light concreting and
compaction equipment. Notable product launches
will include the new CPS 7.5 compressor, produced
in Belgium, and a lighter version (by 250 kg) of
the previous model. The unit, which uses a Deutz
engine, delivers 7.6 m3/min (269 cfm) at 7 bar
(102 psi) working pressure, and is designed for
abrasive sandblasting, running pneumatic tools
and general construction work. With a full fuel
tank, the unit weighs 1475 kg and it measures
1.46 m high by 1.68 m wide
with a length (including
towbar) of 4.36 m. The
canopy is fully galvanised.

Lightweight
rental runner
Atlas Copco says its new lightweight XAS 87 Kd
compressor has been developed specifically for
the European rental and construction industries.
Weighing less than 750 kg it will be easy to transport
from site to site using a standard driving licence.
The XAS 87 Kd is powered by a 4-cylinder, watercooled Kubota V1505 turbo charged diesel engine
rated at 33 kW.
The unit provides a free air delivery of 5m3/min
(83 l/s) at 7 bar, providing a three tool capacity. The
company gives the example of driving pneumatic
tools such as chipping and jade hammers, grinders
and rammers; “making the XAS 87 Kd ideal for basic
construction demands.”
Japan’s Hokuetsu Industries is planning to
expand the range of Airman compressors in
sells in Europe. The company has been making
portable compressors for over 70 years and
is best known for its Airman brand - a name
also used for the mini-excavators it has been
producing since the early 80s. Mr Hiroshi
Yoshida, managing director of Hokuetsu
Industries Europe, based in the Netherlands,
tells IRN that 170 m3/hr (100 cfm) and 315 m3/hr
(185 cfm) portable screw Airman compressors will
be added to the European range some time after
the summer. The current line-up comprises the
220 m3/hr (130 cfm) PDS130S portable unit and
the 127 m3/hr (75 cfm) PDS75S containerised
version. The company, which is not exhibiting
at Bauma this year, is represented in North
America by MMD Equipment and sells four
compressor models there.
Available with a standard steel or polyethylene
HardHat canopy, the compressor is equipped as
standard with a 40 l compact fuel tank.
The unit also is offered with a cold start aid as an
option, enabling the unit to start at temperatures of
down to -20 °C.
Also new from Atlas Copco are updated versions
of its XAHS 237 (236 l/s, 12 bar) and XAMS 287
(285 l/s, 8.6 bar) compressors, now with Deutz Tier
3 engines to replace the Caterpillar units used
previously. Copco says that for a short introductory
period, the standard package includes the FuelXpert
management system and an after cooler/water
IRN
separator.
Montreal rental company Location d’Outils Simplex
(Simplex) has rented 15 compressors to prevent
water freezing in locks on the St Lawrence River,
helping to maintain shipping through to the Great
Lakes.
A mix of Atlas Copco compressors – XAS 1600s,
XAMS 1050s and XAMS 850s models – were supplied
for three weeks in December and will be used
again in April to extend the shipping season. The
compressors, which are used at four locks along
a 220 km stretch of the river around Montreal,
supply up to 6800 m3/min (4000 cfm) per lock.
Air is pumped directly into the water to prevent
the water freezing and to improve the stability of
vessels.
Simplex workshop manager, Stéphane Castilloux,
says; “With temperatures hovering between -10ºC
to -20ºC, it is essential that all the compressors
include the Atlas Copco ‘cold weather’ package
and that we maintain constant checks”. The rental
company, which has a fleet of 100 portable Atlas
Copco compressors, checks oil levels and all
functions daily, with a mechanic visiting each site
twice a day.

Although having troubles at its French
production plant in Montbrison, which it
plans to close (see News this issue), Sullair
Europe says it has been having some success in
selling its S38 G combined compressor/generator unit to
rental companies, with GAP Group in the UK among recent
customers. The S38 G is based on the S38 compressor but with
the addition of a 5.5 kW power offtake for using electrical tools
or equipment, such as a lighting tower, as well as pneumatic tools. The
compressor is a 121 m3/hr-6.9 bar (71 cfm/100 psi) unit and it weight
just under 600 kg. The company’s US-produced range of compressors
include the AF (aftercooled and filtered) models in the 510 m3/hr to 2720 m3/hr (300 - 1600 cfm) sizes.
The G-series of single-stage, wheeled compressors
from US manufacturer Jenny Products Inc comprises
four durable, Honda GX-powered petrol models with
air deliveries of 27.5 m3/hr at 6.9 bar (16.2 cfm/100
psi) or 26.5 m3/hr at 8.6 bar (15.6 cfm/125 psi). The
units use Jenny’s ‘G’ pump, a heavy-duty, singlestage cast-iron compressor pump that is powered
by the 6 kW (8 hp) engines. The series is available
with four air tank configurations: 36 l and 67 l
(8 and 15 gallon) tanks and 76 l and 135 l (17 and
30 gallon) tanks. The latter come standard
with two wheels, and the smaller 36/67
l units have the option of one or
two wheels. The compressors have
integrated handles at opposite ends of
the frames.

esult Group says the new ‘Rules Engine’
function now being introduced for its rental
software will “cut costs and deliver massive
productivity gains.”
The system provides automatic prompts and
questions for rental depot staff to ask when taking
orders and in many other routine rental tasks.
Result says it will “drive absolutely consistent
behaviour across the enterprise and ensure that
the rules set by management are actually being
realised on the ground.”
The genesis of the Rules Engine came when one
of its big US rental customers approached it for a
solution to the problem of having complex products
and non-expert staff. The problem was “leading to
slow and inaccurate quotations for their customers
and restricting their growth potential”, says Result.
Result’s development team, working with
the customer, created a system that allows a
salesperson to offer the best product to the
customer based on the answers to a logical question
flow. The software company says the system
“de-skills the quotation process and maximises the
technical knowledge held by a few individuals.”
Having been initially developed for staff taking
orders, the Rules Engine has now been extended to
cover a wide range of applications, including CRM
script manager, customer service call, asset pricing
optimisation, free days rules, customer service call
creation, geographical rules engine and campaign
management rules.
“This means a client could control employee
workflow for every interaction they are likely to
have...whether it’s with a customer, chasing a
debt, managing an asset etc.”, says Result, “This is

oftware specialist inspHire launched digital
pen technology for the rental industry at
the UK’s Executive Hire Show (EHS) in early
February.
The system uses a digital pen that captures
written information and transmits it via a Bluetoothenabled mobile phone to a rental company’s rental
management system. InspHire says a perfect image
of the document, including all handwritten additions,
is stored and can be reprinted at any time, removing
the need to file hard copies of documents such as
proof of delivery sheets.
“We are really excited about this Digital Pen
Technology”, says Graham Dobbs, inspHire’s
managing director, “Not only can our customers save
time and money on both filing and retrieving signed
documents, they get a confirmation of delivery
or collection in the system almost immediately,
knowing what time equipment was delivered or
collected.” (Chris Branson, former inspHire managing
director, is now chief executive officer and director
of development at the company, focused on longer
term projects and business strategy.)
At the same time, inspHire now offers a scan to
PDF function that allows users to print documents,
add written comments, notes or signatures, and then
scan and automatically file the document and attach
it to the original contract, sales order or workshop
job. The documents can be accessed by the customer
using inspHire’s WebPortal.
InspHire reports that it has recently won software
orders from Height for Hire (Ireland, UK and
Slovakia), ITT Water & Wastewater (for its pump-rerental business, with the software initially being used

he new Smart ‘Alerts system’ now being
offered by MCS for its MCS-rm software go
“much further” than conventional business
alerts, says the company.
Smart Alerts continually checks a wide range
of parameters, data criteria and events to keep
managers aware of how a business is functioning.
MCS says managers can define what they want
Smart Alerts to check, along with the specified
circumstances and time intervals.
The company gives the example of customer

particular company’s level of business drops below a
pre-set value or volume.
“We recognise the highly competitive nature of
today’s market place and the need for hire managers
to have control of even the smallest aspect of their
operation”, says MCS sales manager, Nick Thomson,
“As a result, we developed Smart Alerts to equip them
with the ability to become more proactive and better
informed - making their business less vulnerable to

Godwin Pumps is known worldwide for its Dri-Prime pumps manufactured
in the UK, but the company also runs a massive pump rental business in
the US. Murray Pollok spoke to John Paz, Godwin’s president.
Cutting a path
G
odwin Pumps is this year celebrating the
40th anniversary of the introduction of its
first Dri-Prime automatic priming pumps. It
might equally be celebrating the decision in 1976 to
establish a pump rental business in the US, because
in today’s difficult sales climate it is the rental
company that is making a massive contribution to
the success of the group.
John Paz, president of Bridgeport, New Jerseybased Godwin Pumps, took on the running of the
rental division straight from college at the request
A depot’s story
Managers at Godwin’s Lakeland depot east of
Tampa in Florida are proud of their status in the
company’s network, regularly placing in the top
two or three in the weekly league table for ‘pumps
on rent’.
Lakeland is one of the company’s largest
depots, with anything from 100 to 200 pumps on
rent at any one time, says sales manager Barry
O’Brien. Typically around a third of these will
be rented for bypassing sewer pipes that are
being repaired or re-lined, but the depot’s major
customer application is dewatering the open cast
phosphate mines that litter much of the Florida
landscape. Many of these contracts are with mine
operator Mosaic.
The Lakeland depot illustrates the capital
intensive nature of pump rentals. With around
25 employees, the depot is base for three mobile
mechanics, two roll-back trucks, two flatbed
trucks, two pick-up trucks and one truck with a
loader crane. A four-bay workshop - including
a paint booth - has sufficient crane capacity to
handle even the largest pumps. The shop carries
$300-400000 worth of parts at any one time,
including shafts and impellers.
This depot, like the others in the network, is
very self-contained. Mr O’Brien estimates that
around 80% of the engineering on its contracts
are done in Lakeland, and the depot carries out
its own marketing, payroll and billing functions.
of his father, John Paz Sr. It was the father, then
running a heavy-equipment construction business
with his brothers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania,
who first spotted the potential of the Dri-Primes
(being built in the UK by Godwin Pumps) as an
alternative to the less reliable manually primed
pumps that he was using on dewatering projects.
Speaking to IRN on the phone from the New
Jersey office during the Rental Show in Orlando –
heavy snow having prevented him making the trip
to Florida in the company jet – Mr Paz remembers
that his father was focused on selling the Dri-Prime
pumps in North America and that he originally
wanted to sell off the rental rights. “I said, ‘Dad, the
only cheques coming in are for pump rentals’.”
That realisation – and the fact that breaking a new
brand and technology was always likely to be easier
through rental rather than sales – is what drove the
development of the rental business in the US, called
Godwin Pumps of America.
“We started building our rental fleet”, says Mr
Paz, “and we became quite successful. At that
time rental itself was growing anyway, but we cut
the path in pumps.” He recalls that in those days
many contractors simply borrowed pumps from
each other, so a professional rental service was
welcomed.
A lot has changed since then. By the late 90s the
North American dealership had become Godwin
Pumps’ largest distributor worldwide, and in 2001
John Paz acquired the UK manufacturing business,
transforming his company into a global pump
manufacturing and sales business, albeit one with
a major domestic rental operation.
Texas. The latest to open was Jacksonville, Florida
– adding to the existing Lakeland, Florida site – and
a 26th, in Evanston, Wyoming, close to Salt Lake
City, will open early this year, helping to expand the
operation in the west. Like all the Godwin locations
these will be high quality, with 16000 ft2 of area and
typically $12 million worth of equipment.
There is plenty of scope for additional locations in
the US, with San Francisco and Minnesota being two
of the more obvious gaps, says Mr Paz.
There has been no rapid expansion or investment.
“I’ve taken my time and worked strategically [and
Business model
That business model – pump manufacturing in the
UK (at the historical Godwin site in Quenington,
Gloucestershire), sales worldwide through
distributors, and rental in the US – remains in
place today. Now, however, the rental business has
assumed a pretty remarkable scale, with annual
revenues in the region of US$100-150 million.
Although Godwin has a sales network in North
America of over 100 locations, the rental business
comprises 25 dedicated rental centres with a rental
fleet of 4000 diesel driven pumps – including 800
‘workhorse’ 6 inch pumps alone – and a total fleet
of 10000 units including associated submersible
pumps, lighting towers, gensets and compressors.
“We arguably have the largest diesel pump fleet
in the world”, says Mr Paz, who clearly lives and
breathes his business.
His strategy has been to gradually add locations.
The majority of the rental network is on the east
coast, with just four depots in the west and three in

opened sites] where we can find good people. We’re
not in any race”, he says, “A lot of people want to be
huge. There is a risk in being too big in rental. It’s a
service business – delivering the right equipment
and the right service.”
In Godwin’s case it is also a very specialist
business, requiring not just the ability to sell a rental
to a customer but in many cases engineer the job as
well. These engineering design services extend to
on-site teams who fusion weld polyethylene pipes in
sizes up to 18 inches.
Of course, 2009 was a difficult year for Godwin as
it was for everyone in the US rental scene. “2009
was the first year in 30 years that we didn’t have
positive growth”, says Mr Paz, who puts the fall in
revenues at a little more than 10%. Even so, he says
the company remained profitable and there were no
lay-offs among the 650 staff.
“We reigned in overtime, cut fuel use, reduced
expenses. We did really well”, says Mr Paz,
“Overtime is a multi-million dollar cost. The stores
open from 7.00am to 6.00pm – we cut back the ‘way
of life’ overtime. If nothing’s going on, they punch
out at 4.30 pm. There has been a huge amount of
cooperation with managers and staff.” He puts total
annual cost savings last year at between $6 and
$10 million.
Like other renters the company gets work when
there are natural disasters – the severe flooding in
California at the end of 2009 being a good example –
but Mr Paz says that the general market has seen an
improvement since last October. He says business
levels have jumped about 25% - time utilisation is
back in the 60-70% range – and is now back at pre-
IRN 03 10 Interview Godwin.indd 53
recession levels, and stable.
“This is my fourth recession”, he tells IRN, “and in
the prior three we were always a leading indicator
[of recovery]. Half of the upturn is a recovery in
the market, and half is us having a very strong
focus and pushing in the field to get business. We
had to regroup, go back with a different strategy.”
A slightly more aggressive stance on pricing is one
element of this, he acknowledges.
The company has also been helped by the US
economic stimulus package. “We’ve garnered
some work from stimulus money, and we will get
more”, he says, mostly in investment in water and
wastewater as well as construction.
If investment in vehicles has been cut, spending
on new fleet has been maintained, partly in support
of the new depots and partly in response to a
demand for larger, more specialised pumps, such
as the massive CD500M unit for large dewatering
applications in mining and civil construction. This
is one of the new pumps that Godwin will exhibit at
Bauma (along with the first of a redesigned range
of submersible pumps – see our Bauma Guide in this
issue).
veteran with Ingersoll Rand, says Godwin already
has representation in Mexico, Panama, Colombia and
Chile. “It’s a long term effort”, says Mr Fernandez.
Who knows how the business will look come
the 50th anniversary of the Dri Prime. Whatever
the decade holds, expect another well-deserved
celebration in 2016 when the rental business
IRN
reaches its 40th.
IT investment
The company has invested in its IT infrastructure,
implementing a Result Group rental software
system for its US rental operation that went live
in September last year and which Mr Paz says is
already proving beneficial. He says being able to
generate narrow focus reports – revenues per
salesman at each branch, for example – gives him
and other managers more control. It’s too early
to quantify the benefits, he says, “but by instinct I
know it’s a lot better”.
The future focus on the business will be to
continue expanding the rental operation, and, as
John Paz explains, “We’re looking to find ways to
use Dri-Prime pumps where they are using different
technology.” One recent example of this is using
Dri-Prime units to replace standby generators at
pumping stations. These generators are designed
to start-up when power is cut, but the pumps don’t
always successfully start operating again. The
diesel driven Dri-Prime provide the power and the
back-up pump in one unit. As many of 60 of these
have now been installed in Florida alone.
The focus on the sales operation continues,
of course. In the coming years there will
be a particular push on expansion in
Latin America as well as in the Middle
East, Africa and Europe. Godwin’s Latin

European Commission on two important issues – problems
ERA NEWS
NEWS
The European Rental Association (ERA) is talking to the
in shifting equipment across country borders, and panEuropean efforts to combat equipment theft.
Cross-borders
Transporting plant
The ERA has approached the European Commission
to raise its attention to issues faced by rental
companies when operating across national
borders, and at this stage mainly the cross-border
transportation of heavy equipment. This is an issue
shared by the construction industry at large, on
which the ERA is exchanging regular information
with the contractors association FIEC (European
Construction Industry Federation)
A meeting with representatives of the European
Commission’s Transport directorate took place
in early January. At the meeting, the ERA
presented the initial findings of a research done
by the association’s EU Affairs Committee on the
requirements for the transportation of heavy
equipment in different Member States. These
requirements have two main implications:
■ The obligation to unload plant at national
borders and re-load it on to another vehicle
complying with the regulations of the Member
State across which or to which it is to be
transported;
■ In some cases, to arrange for a specific license
and a convoy to accompany the vehicle, which
can be obtained within two days in some
Member States and in up to 60 days in others;
The meeting was positive as the European
Commission is normally keen to help companies
take advantage of the European internal market.
However, the cross-border transportation of
plant touches upon many issues that are of the
responsibility of EU Member States and any
progress in that area will take a long time (for
example, if the aim was harmonisation of national
legislation).
This is why the ERA is asking the Commission to
facilitate the following:
■ Establishment of a consistent deadline for
national authorities to provide authorisation
for exceptional road transport. In today’s world
there is no rational explanation as to why such
authorisation takes a maximum of 3 to 6 days in
some countries and up to 60 in others;
■ Establishment of a harmonised set of
documents required by authorities for
providing exceptional road transport
authorisations and recognition of official
documents issued in other Member States.
Indeed, authorities often require more detailed
information than mentioned on the registration
certificate. Most Member States have created
their own documents for this purpose and most
of them only accept national documents (in the
official language of the country).
The main outcome of the meeting is that the ERA
was requested by the European Commission to
provide case studies of the administrative burden
faced by rental companies when transporting heavy
equipment across borders to help it assess the
situation and if necessary move the case forward.
The ERA is talking to the European Commission about the issue of
cross-border transportation of plant and equipment.

Fighting Theft
Over the past year, the four trade federations
representing construction equipment
manufacturers (CECE), dealers and distributors
(ECED), construction contractors (FIEC) and rental
companies (ERA) have had regular meeting to
highlight the importance of equipment theft
for their respective industries and on national
initiatives taken to combat such theft.
The four bodies have concluded that many
stakeholders, including police forces and insurance
companies, are looking into equipment theft in their
own particular ways.
As a result, they have agreed on the principle to
request that the European Commission take the
lead in the debate, as it is the only institution which
would have the authority to bring together all the
stakeholders and Member State authorities. Initial
IRN
contacts with EC officials are being made.

SHOW REPORTS

Looking on
the bright
side in Orlando
T
he American Rental Association’s Rental Show
– which took place in Orlando, Florida, in the
second week of February – saw busier aisle
traffic than last year’s Atlanta event and evidence
of increased optimism, but few at the Orange County
Convention Center were predicting a significant
recovery in the US rental market this year.
Christine Wehrman, chief executive officer of the
ARA, speaking to over 1000 rental delegates at the
event’s opening session, said; “I’d like to be able
to say that 2010 will take us back to..2007 levels
of business. I can’t say these exact words to you; I
would like to, but I can’t.”
Ms Wehrman said the recent ARA survey for
the final quarter of 2009 did at least point to an
improving situation in North America, with over
half of rental companies saying that they expected
rental revenues to increase in 2010, and the same
percentage expecting to spend more on new fleet.
On the show floor, however, suppliers were
being more cautious, and this was reflected in the
generally much smaller stands being taken by big
suppliers. Craig Paylor, president of JLG Industries,
told IRN that he expected aerial platform sales in
North America to be flat overall this year, although
with the prospect of increases in the second half of
the calendar year.
JLG returned to the show in Orlando after having
missed 2009; “We’re very happy we came this year,
and very happy we didn’t come last year...This year
I’m very pleased with the turnout”, he said.
2010 opportunity
ABOVE: Belgian groundcare supplier Eliet was among the European
suppliers exhibiting in Orlando. Frederic Liefaer, owner and
managing director, told IRN that the company had started selling
to the rental market first in the US, where it has been selling for
six years, and was now targeting rental in Europe as well. “We like
the Rental Show a lot – it’s a show where you can sell”.
Mr Kale Paulson, director of sales, rental channel
at Volvo Construction Equipment, was cautiously
optimistic; “I think there’s a window of opportunity.
A lot of national accounts didn’t purchase last year...
the opportunity isn’t a reflection on increased
demand, but by necessity because of the age of the
equipment.
“It’s going to be a slow climb. The average fleet
age is in the mid-40s [months], it might be higher
for compaction equipment. You hit a critical point
where you need to re-fleet. Hopefully we’ll see some
fleeting this year...at the end of the second quarter,
start of the third quarter.”
Not all were as optimistic. Brent Hagedorn, vice
Visitor numbers
The Orlando Rental Show saw a 16% increase in
visitor numbers over the 2009 event in Atlanta,
Georgia. The total number of visitors was
6579, of which 3169 rental business personnel
from 1559 rental stores. The total figure also
includes 3410 exhibitor personnel. There
were 607 companies exhibiting and the total
exhibition space was 224000 ft2 net, down 30%
on Atlanta.
Next year’s show returns to Las Vegas, with
the show taking place on Monday 28 February
to Wednesday 2 March at the Mandalay Bay
Convention Center.
president of AWP sales for Haulotte Group in North
America, told IRN that he expected flat or declining
sales in North America in 2010. He said, however,
that Haulotte was growing its North American
market share - he claimed 7% for 2009 - by virtue
of the company’s strength in selling to smaller
independents and through dealers, rather than the
major rental companies.
The show itself is significantly smaller than in
previous years, and ARA said it would exploit this
smaller footprint to take the event to new venues in
future, including San Antonio, Texas and San Diego,
California. These locations could be included from
2014 onwards.
With the manufacturers taking smaller stands,
it was left to some of the IT companies - like
Result Group, SmartEquip and Wynne Systems - to
make a bigger impression with large stands. Alex
Schuessler, chief executive officer of SmartEquip,
the online parts ordering system, told IRN that the
company was now investing heavily in its networks
to prepare for a rapid increase in parts ordering
when the recovery starts.
“It has to happen”, said Mr Schuessler, “the
question is when. As soon as there is a pick-up, there
are no parts in the system. It’s going to be a massive
spring-effect.”
James Horsfall, vice president at rental software
company Result Group, which is now well established
in the North American market and has several
large US customers, told IRN that “Since the start
of this year we started to see a lot more interest,
particularly on the [off the shelf] Express product.”
Speaking halfway through the show, he said
“Yesterday we saw good quality people. The number
of people being sent by companies is reduced...but
so far we’ve been pleased, especially after last year
IRN
in Atlanta.”

T
he trend towards low height access platforms
was well in evidence at the Rental Show, with
new machines from Haulotte/Bil-Jax, Custom
Equipment and Absolute E-Z Up, in addition to the
Snorkel/UpRight deal on the Pop-Up.
Haulotte Group has re-engineered the UK-designed
Power Tower by making it a self-propelled unit. The
new PT 10 SP (above) has a maximum working height of
4.9 m (16 ft) and maintenance-free 100 Ahr batteries
will propel the lift at a top speed of 3 mph.
Brent Hagedorn, vice president of AWP sales for
Haulotte Group in North America, told IRN that “we
had very little interest in a push-around lift. People
in North America demand self-propelled.” He said
the 567 kg (1250 lb) lift was “about the lightest thing
I know with that capacity [227 kg (500 lb)].”
US scissor lift manufacturer Custom Equipment
took the wraps off its new self-propelled unit, the
HB-S830, at the 2010 Rental Show in Orlando and also
showed its new push-around scissor, the HB-P830.
The Wisconsin-based manufacturer of Hy-brid Lifts
told IRN that there was a growing market for selfpropelled units in North America, while demand for
push-around scissors remained in Europe. Both units
have a 4.3 m (14 ft) working height.
Finally, Braviisol’s North American dealer, Absolute
E-Z Up, has ‘Americanized’ the Italian company’s
Leonardo units, and used the show to exhibit the
IAWP-9.6 model and the new, higher reach IAWP-15.
The new model offers a maximum working height
of 4.6 m (15 ft 2 in) and has an unrestricted platform
capacity of 280 kg (616 lb). Inside turning radius is
zero and outside radius is just 1.57 m (62 in). IRN
anfield Group used the Rental Show to
announce that its Snorkel and UpRight
businesses have signed a deal with UK miniscissor producer Pop-Up Products to sell its range
internationally.
Pop-Up will continue to sell the Chinese-built, pusharound scissors in the UK and Ireland, with UpRight/
Snorkel taking the products and brand to the global
market. The companies will also cooperate on
product development and Tanfield will use the PopUp brand for all its low level acess products.
The company defines low-level access as platforms
aimed at the mass market, typically lightweight (well
under 680 kg (1500 lbs)) and low cost (typically $4000
- $10000) and either push-around or self propelled.
Darren Kell, CEO of the Tanfield Group, said:
“Pop-Up is a name recognised for its market
experience, product knowledge and a proven track
record in innovation in low-level personal access
and is the ideal brand under which to market these
personal access products worldwide.
“By leveraging Snorkel’s expertise in product
development, manufacturing and sales and
distribution in the US we can develop Pop-Up to be
the dominant force in low level, personal access and
take maximum advantage of our fast track product
IRN
development programme.”
Doosan updates
‘iconic’ compressor
D
oosan Infracore Portable Power used the
show to launch a new version of its ‘iconic’
P185 compressor (a 185 cfm/7 bar unit).
Although retaining the outside look of its
predecessor, the new model (below) has been
redesigned for Tier 4 Interim engine requirements. It
has a much larger toolbox, a new engine diagnostic
system, and a smaller 49 hp 4024T John Deere engine
that offers the same performance as the previous
65 hp unit but with 20% lower fuel consumption. The
better performance comes by virtue of a redesigned
air end. A larger fuel tank provides for 10 hour
continuous operation.
An alternative C185 ‘rental spec’ version (below)
uses a polymer canopy, a Kubota engine, and does
not have the gull wing openings used on the P model.
IRN
It is around 15% cheaper.
Toro has extended its range of compact
equipment with the addition of a dedicated
stump grinder, in part to appeal to the
rental sector. The STX-26 – shown as a
prototype in Orlando – is the company’s first
stump grinder. It uses the same controls as
the recently introduced TRX-26 walk behind
trencher and is hydraulic driven, rather
than belt-driven. The company says it is
the smallest stump grinder in the market
to use a hydraulic drive. The company also
plans to add a commercial lawn mower to
its product range.

Avant Tecno’s new 400 series articulated loader is the smallest
diesel driven model yet from the Finnish company. Company
managing director Jukka Vaattovaara tells IRN that the 400
series – which fits between the company’s 200 and 500 series
models – has been launched because “most professional users
want diesel”. The unit, which weighs 980 kg and has a 15 kW
Kubota engine, has a tipping load of approximately 600 k and
when equipped with a telescopic boom can lift as high as 2.8 m.
It can be used with as many as 100 attachments, and will have a
retail price of around £12000.

organisers
Organisers of the Executive Hire Show said the
2010 show had attracted 1489 visitors over the
two days of the show - almost the same as in 2009
- and said it was “a tremendous achievement...
given the challenging economic climate. More
importantly, it proves that passionate hirers are
looking ahead positively to the coming year.”
The organisers said; “Many hirers who
attended, from both large nationals and local
independents, have told us how the buzz in the
exhibition hall provided a positive boost after a
difficult 12 months, and that it reaffirmed their
enthusiasm - as did the Executive Hire Party on
the Wednesday night, which offered the perfect
networking opportunity.”
Over 102 companies exhibited at the event in
Coventry. Net year’s show will take place at the
same venue – the Ricoh Arena, Coventry – on
Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 February.

The two companies are neighbours in Maldon, Essex.
For Youngman, the addition of the lighting towers
is something of a departure from the access
products for which it is best known. It has been
an independent business following a management
buyout in 2005 from former owner SGB.
John Bungay, Youngman’s business development
manager, says “It’s a work on site product. We’ve
had an interest in lighting towers for several
years...We liked the TCP product. It became evident
that they had an excellent product, with patented
technology, but they needed to develop the scale
of manufacturing to take it to a broader market in
volume.”
Andrew Barker, TCP’s managing director, told IRN
that the two companies would continue to operate
as independent businesses, with the joint venture
limited to the lighting towers.
Mr Bungay said that TCP would probably continue
to focus on sales in the UK, Benelux and Scandinavia,
with Youngman also selling in the UK, the Middle
East, Asia Pacific, Australia and Spain and France.
“Neither of us minds what route it goes through”,
says Mr Bungay.
The Ecolite is available in two versions and are
described as “environmentally focused lighting
towers which reduce carbon footprint and running
costs by up to 80% compared to other lighting
towers on the market.”
Mr Barker said it was the palletised Ecolite P that
would be the main focus of attention for Youngman’s
efforts. The P model is a square design tower sized
to fit on a standard Euro pallet. The standard Ecolite
T is a trailer mounted tower.
Also at the show, Youngman exhibited two new
X-Series mini-scissors. The new BoSS X2 is a smaller
brother to the original X3 model launched in 2008.
With a 2 m platform height, the X2 uses two scissor
packs instead of three and uses a smaller battery
and motor than the X3.
The other new model is the X3X, which uses three
scissor packs but with longer arms and a longer
hydraulic ram, pushing platform height up from
2.5 m to 3.2 m. It has a slightly longer and wider
chassis than the X3. The company also showed a
concept machine, the X3XS, which is wind rated to
IRN
12.5 m/sec for external use.
SHOW HIGHLIGHTS
Tower Light’s VT-1 Eco lighting tower – the model
that reduces fuel use and labour requirements by
using a light sensor to automatically turn on and
off the tower - is now generally available. Speedy
Hire had the exclusive rights to the model when
it was launched. Tower Light reported at the show
that French rental company Kiloutou has ordered
50 of the VT-1 towers.
UK site dumper manufacturer Thwaites has added a 300 kg
capacity micro-dumper to its range. The 0.7 m wide, 1.61 m long
unit – which was shown last year as a prototype - is powered by
a Honda 3.2 kW engine and is a 2WD unit with a central bogey
wheel to drive the other two wheels – a similar design concept to
the Muck-Truck and Belle Group’s mini dumper. The basic model
will cost around £1800 and it can be supplied with a special flat
platform and with larger tyres.
Brandon Hire is the latest rental company to sign
up to the online rental portal erento. Erento’s
Clinton Patterson, speaking at the Hire Show,
says Brandon will be the only national hirer to
join the UK network in the UK as the website aims
to build up the customer base in line with the
number of rental locations offered. Outside the
UK, meanwhile, Mr Patterson said that erento had
signed up RSC Equipment Rental as its first big
rental chain in the US, and also Boels Verhuur in
the Netherlands and Germany.

■ Grindex has appointed Joakim
Cronstrand (above) as its managing
director, replacing Peter Schmidt,
who is now manager of the
dewatering business unit at ITT
Water & Wastewater, Grindex’s sister
company within ITT.
Mr Cronstrand, who started in his
new post in mid-January, is a Swedish
national who has worked for Grindex
for several years, latterly as sales
manager for North America. He was
also responsible for the company’s IT
systems.
At the same time, Grindex has
appointed a Per Rehn as managing
director of its North American
operations. Mr Rehn is a pump
engineer who was part of the team
responsible for Grindex’s more recent
pump developments. He moved to the
US last Autumn.
Although impacted by the economic
downturn, the company said it
has been performing well. Sales in
2009 fell by 20% - a modest fall in
comparison to many construction
equipment manufacturers - and half
of that fall was the result of one
customer, likely to be a major rental
company, who cut pump investment
in the year. A Grindex spokesman
said the company was targeting a 4%
increase in sales in 2010.
■ Netherlands based rental company,
Riwal, has appointed Dirk Konings as
senior account manager.
Mr Konings has worked in the
powered access industry for 36 years,
most recently working as account
manager for Platform Sales Europe
and previously for a long spell with
Doornbos.
At Riwal he will focus on
international clients and projects and
on cross border activities.
■ Kishore Sidhwani (below) has
been appointed vice president of
Chicago Pneumatic Construction
Equipment. He was general manager
of Atlas Copco’s Construction &
People news
from the world’s rental industry
Mining Technique Customer Centre
in India and started his new job on
1 February, located in Nacka, near
Stockholm, Sweden.
Mr Sidhwani, who has held sales and
marketing positions since 1974, will be
responsible for building a dedicated
sales organisation for Chicago
Pneumatic.
“The positioning of the brand in
different markets and the creation of
effective sales channels are the main
challenges for the next months”, said
Mr Sidhwani. “Sales will be distributor
driven. We will streamline all internal
and dealer processes to be able
to support customers in the best
possible way.”
Mr Sidhwani’s appointment is part
of a focus by Atlas Copco to make
Chicago Pneumatic a global brand for
construction equipment sold under a
separate network from Atlas Copco.
■ François Desbriere (above right)
has taken over as powered access
manager at Manitou, replacing
previous access manager Christian
Lajous who has moved to head up
Manitou’s pricing department.
Mr Desbriere has worked with
Manitou for several years, most
recently as area sales manager based

■ Hertz has appointed Michel Taride
to the position of president, Hertz
International. Formerly, Mr Taride
was president of Hertz Europe and
this previous role has been expanded
to include the company’s Asia Pacific
car rental and leasing businesses
as well as having responsibility for
creating new business opportunities
with the car and equipment rental
operations in the Hertz International
region.
Mr Taride, who is now in his thirtieth
year with Hertz, is based at the
Hertz International headquarters in
London, UK.
Mark Frissora, chairman and
chief executive officer of Hertz,
said Mr Taride’s experience would
be essential “as we grow our
international business, particularly in
emerging markets such as Asia, the
Pacific Rim, and the Middle East.”
Mr Taride’s experience includes
a two year period in the late 90s as
general manager for HERC Europe.

Wynne Systems as
business development
manager for Europe.
Ms Cossu (formerly
Carole Malval), who
is based in Munich, Germany, will
be responsible for extending the
European customer base for Wynne’s
RentalMan and InfoManager software.
She will work with Wynne’s European
general manager, Kris Brusselmans,
who is located at Wynne’s European
head office in Antwerp, Belgium.
Before joining Wynne at the start of
January, Ms Cossu work experience
had included almost seven years
working with Loxam in Paris. When
she left the company in October
2008 she was part of Loxam’s
senior management team involved
in mergers and acquisitions, quality
control and information systems.
Prior to that she worked with
