Contemporary Perfection
When Arland McMullen
embarked on the mission
of creating a contemporary
masterpiece, he did so with
singular focus on excellence.
The result: a home that evinces
distinction in every single room.
For all this magnificence, any commentary
on the result would be inadequate without
insight into the process of how Mr. McMullen’s home found and recreated this Keowee
Key treasure on North Flagship Drive.
With the mantra, “I can fix a home, but I
can’t fix a view,” McMullen’s initial search
included 232 homes in the region, based
largely on great views. Next, he derived a list
of 12 houses, and that’s when the real work
began. With each of these “finalist homes”
he commissioned a cadre of consultants
(two car loads, in fact) to ascend with critical eyes and scoring sheets, creating useful
metrics to ensure that objectivity drove the
process. After one group was eliminated,
this process was repeated with the final
three selections, and it was through this prodigious effort that his Keowee Key home on
North Flagship Drive was selected.
• Notwithstanding the long list of
design considerations - once again
the view was a big driver of the selection, and what a view it has. The
home faces directly towards Sassafras
Mountain (the highest point in South
Carolina, with an elevation of 3,554
feet), while Table Rock and Caesar's
Head State Parks are also visible from
inside the house.

• With the location and its dramatic
views selected, Arland gathered
design ideas from countless architectural publications and books, strategically cutting and pasting pictures on
design boards for each room. With
these ideas in place, he asked his team
of trusted design advisors to cast vote,
with designer Debbie Burgess of
Tulsa, Oklahoma, leading the effort.
• When it was all said and done, the
design process consumed two years and
the renovations took two more. In short,
Arland’s move-in day represented four
years of incredible attention to detail,
innovative thinking, and loads of oldfashioned hard work. The results not
only represent a superlative effort; they
serve as a great reminder that a refusal
to take short cuts pays huge dividends
when the job is complete.
• To adequately do justice to this amazing home would take a writer with far
greater architectural acumen than I
possess, but here’s my best shot (albeit,
an inadequate one) at describing some
of the remarkable features in Mr.
McMullen’s home that you won’t find
around every bend on Lake Keowee:
• A contemporary (not mid-century
modern) design, which features uniformity in everything from flooring
and cabinetry, to mirrors and railings,
ensuring continuity and chemistry
throughout the home.
• African mahogany wood floors
throughout the main house purchased through Canada and
installed by Greene Flooring in
Greenville, while Ben Wingert
of Central, SC did the teak wood
bathroom floors and the inlays.
• A color pallet on cabinets throughout
that features lighter colors on bottom
and darker colors on top—the inverse
of most cabinetry designs.

• Dramatic oversized custom windows across the back of
the home—on both levels—providing mesmerizing Lake
Keowee views, with automatic shades.
• State-of-the-art home automation, controlled by five main panels (iPads) that provide one-touch control of the security system,
door locks, lighting, entertainment systems, and much more with many features accessible from an authorized iPhone.
• An elaborate multimedia system that simultaneously plays
the same audio throughout, while videos to most of the
songs from the extensive music library play on the main TV.
What’s more, the home is wired to receive radio stations
from all over the planet (including clear waves from the sole
station in Antarctica), so when McMullen had house guests
from a small hamlet in Pennsylvania, he surprised them with
broadcasts from their tiny home-town radio station, piped
into their guestroom when they awoke in his South Carolina
home. The system also has endless entertainment options,
including wireless headsets for his grandchildren (ages 11, 9
and 8), so they can crank up the volume on video games and
movies without straining adult eardrums. The great-room
chandelier and fireplace can also be controlled from the main

TV remote, while the massive, ultra-HD television is accented by the same shade of blue lighting used in film editing for
a theatre-like viewing experience.
• The entire multimedia system was designed and installed by
Tim Donovan of Ambiance Sound & Video, and because
there was so much integration between multimedia and lighting, McMullen allowed Donovan to handle the lighting as
well. The result is a dramatic centralized lighting system, composed almost entirely of LED lights, dimmable to 1% from
iPhone or iPad. Distinctive accent lighting appears throughout,
including the kitchen, fireplace, master suite and down the
stairway, reflecting the seasons and crating the perfect ambiance for any occasion. The home’s closets also have convenient
motion-sensor lighting, as does the grandkids’ phenomenal
bunkroom, in which the lights slowly fade as they fall asleep.
• A 100” commercial fireplace (electric) that allows heat to be
turned off for 12-month usage, with a stunning background
of stones and internal lighting that can change color to
reflect the different seasons.
• Zero radius sinks throughout the home, imported from
Germany, with waterfall faucets equipped with LED lights
to indicate water temperature, i.e. blue for cold and red for
hot. To ensure safety, these lights run on a 12-volt generator,
activated by flowing water, eliminating any risk of electrical
shock from a traditional hard-wired configuration.
• A luxurious master bath with German cabinetry that features
commercial grade sliding shower doors and an advanced,
programmable aromatherapy system that allows essential oils
to be dispensed with a cotton ball and diffused into the bath
(eliminating oily water), complemented by chromotherapy,
providing a wide array of lighting options that soothe the soul.

• Elegant custom-made sofas, carefully designed with low

• An impressive lower-level wine cellar that’s structurally
capable of accommodating a future elevator.
In closing, NFL Hall-of-Famer Jerry Rice said: “Today I will
do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can enjoy what they can’t”
… or something close to that. This quote came to mind when I
listened to Arland share the story of creating this Keowee Key
retreat. I certainly don’t possess the patience or focus to pull off
what he’s done with this magnificent home, but now he’s enjoying the fruit of his labor each and every day.

An Iceland Vacation & Wedding

My husband and I had many fond memories of our vacations over
the years, and I love to travel, but when Iceland was mentioned,
I must admit I was not initially warm to the idea. Iceland seemed
like such a remote place, and one that seemed so far away.
However, when our granddaughter Jessica and her fiancé Damian decided to get
married on a small island off the coast of
Iceland, I obviously reconsidered. That's
when I got serious about learning more,
and discovered that while it’s part of the
Arctic, Iceland isn’t nearly as cold as most
places in the far north, thanks to the gulf
stream that warms most of Iceland's coast.
Although it has a small population of
only 300,000 people, when the great
Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupted in 2010,
travelers from around the world began
to discover the wonders of Iceland, and
thankfully we did as well!
The 2013 blockbuster movie, The Secret
Life of Walter Mitty starring Ben Stiller,
also has some amazing cinematography that captures this breathtakingly
beautiful country, and no doubt has
increased its popularity among American travelers.
The time finally came when we were
to depart last summer, and it was still
light outside when we arrived in Reykjavík— the capital and largest city of
Iceland—at 12 o’clock midnight on July
11th. Forty-five minutes later, we reached
our destination: the Nest Boutique, where
we rented a beautiful sixth-floor, fourbedroom apartment. We chose these large
accommodations so some of our extended
family could be together. The convenient
location also allowed us to walk to a local
bakery and grocery store.
On Sunday, to honor the bride, her Aunt
Mari sponsored an afternoon tea, which
was located at the Vox Restaurant in the
Hilton Hotel, for all of the lady guests.
The food was outstanding.
The next day, while many of the guests
decided to see the countryside and visit
some waterfalls, my daughter-in-law
Mari and I took a cooking class. We first
made the Wedding Bliss Cake, consisting
mainly of oats, butter and flour. The
filling is rhubarb jam. It is a favorite,
which can be eaten anytime of the day.
The topping was made from skyr— a
dairy-based product that was brought to
Iceland by the Vikings in the 1100s, and
it's a very creamy and delicious proteinrich delicacy that’s loved by Icelanders
and tourists alike.
While we were cooking during the class,
the chef told us all about her native Iceland. Since the volcanoes made Iceland
so well known, some two million vacationers travel to the tiny country every
year. Accommodating this many tourists
has placed a great stress on the country,
because only 1% of its land can grow any
crops, including hay for livestock. As a
result, root vegetables - such as potatoes
and turnips - are the only crops that grow
naturally there. Thankfully, the long, sunny
days and geothermal springs allow for an
abundance of greenhouses where fruits
and vegetables thrive. Iceland’s hot springs

also play a big role in heating homes and
buildings, and no one buys bottled water
because their water is so pure.
We were also able to enjoy our granddaughter’s gorgeous wedding on the
unspoiled island of Viðey, which is rich
in natural beauty. That evening a phenomenal six-course meal was part of the
festivities. We started with platters of
shredded duck breast salad, seared menke
whale (an Icelandic delicacy), and BBQ
pork braised ribs followed by beef tenderloin. The traditional wedding cake is
referred to as a Kransakaka dessert, which
has Norwegian and Danish roots. It is an
elaborately decorated ring-shaped, tiered
tower cake. The texture is similar to a firm
sponge cake with an underlying taste of
almond flavor. The ingredients are super
simple: eggs, marzipan and powdered
sugar. The outside is decorated with intricate designs, chocolate and fruit - a great
way to end the evening meal!
I could go on and on about our amazing
trip to Iceland, but suffice to say, it was a
trip of a lifetime, especially considering
the fact that we were able to enjoy it with
extended family and dear friends - and
witness our granddaughter and her new
husband say their vows at one of the most
scenic places on earth.
We also learned that Icelanders don’t have
family names. They're properly addressed
by their first name. Since many Icelanders
have the same name that the telephone
directory lists each person's occupation in
addition to their name and address.
The Blue Lagoon is also a must to enjoy
when traveling to Iceland; our entire
family went during the day. The lagoon is
huge and beautiful, with blue warm (geothermal) waters. During those few hours,
everybody's skin became very soft and
stayed that way for weeks. Jessica and
Damian chose to go at midnight. What a
beautiful memory for them!
I definitely recommend Iceland as a phenomenal summer vacation destination
and hope you can visit it soon!

They play together most every day, and if they don’t, they
definitely miss each other. They love to fetch tennis balls, but
their favorite activity is tug-of-war. Bogey steals Wagner’s toys,
and while Wagner is quite tolerant, he does remind Bogey
who owns the toy! Bogey will tug and pull with all his might
and, and throw in an occasional growl, in attempt to wrest the
ball from Wagner’s mouth. But Wagner just clings tightly until
Bogey gets bored! In the beginning, Bogey’s energy annoyed
Wagner at times, but Wagner was smart enough to jump up
on a couch or bench, knowing that Bogey wasn’t big enough
to reach him. But now Bogey is big enough, and they play like
there’s no tomorrow.

After meeting Judy Ruzicka’s dog Wagner on the leisure trails at
Keowee Key, I fell so much in love with him, I had to get one too.
Wagner, who got his name because he’s forever happy and
wagging his tail, is a Cavapoo—a mix between a King Charles
Cavalier and a Miniature Poodle. He’s 4 years old and was purchased as a 10-week-old pup in Suwannee, Georgia.
My dog Bogey is also a Cavapoo, purchased in Hull, Georgia,
when he was 8 weeks old, and he’s the first dog I’ve ever owned.
Bogey (named for his love of golf ), is now 6 months old.

The organization's name is Partners for Animal Shelters Adoptions (PASA). This organization was formed about seven years
ago by a group of women in a home at Keowee Key, who
became the original board members. The board members who
are Keowee Key residents are as follows:

Donna Shaver, Marilyn Pilon, and Jamiee Paul, representing the

Cream Of Turkey Soup
Ingredients:
2 Tablespoons butter
3 Tablespoons flour
7 cups chicken broth
Carcass of turkey (chicken can be used as well)
1 onion, finely chopped
1 carrot, finely chopped
1 stalk celery, finely chopped
2 egg yolks
1/2 cup milk (I use skim)
Directions:
Looking for a way to use all the Thanksgiving left overs, I put
our meaty carcass and skin with seasonings in a large pot covering the bones as much as possible. Bring to a boil for several
hours. Cool, cover and refrigerate overnight when cold fat will
rise to the top. Skim off fat and discard.
Begin the soup by melting butter. Adding onion, carrot and celery,
sautéing for short time. Stir in flour slowly. Using a whisk, slowly
add milk to make a rue. Continue using whisk till smooth. Slowly
add 7 cups of broth, 1 cup at a time. Stir and cook on medium/ low.
In a separate small bowl use a fork to whisk egg yolks. Then
quickly whisk together egg with 1cup of broth.
Move quickly to blend eggs and broth. Add this mixture to the
remaining broth. Soup will thicken as eggs cook.
This delicious soup is more like a stew ... and so satisfying. It
is also good and quicker to use purchased broth and cooked
chicken or turkey.

to respond to our questions for this article.

Where did you grow up? How long have
you lived in the area? Tell us about your
family. My family moved to Seneca, SC
halfway through my last year of elementary school. My dad worked for Amoco
Oil at the time and was transferred to
the old Phillips/Amoco/BP/Propex
Fibers plant that used to be on Shiloh
Lake Keowee
I got the music bug when I was about 6 years old. Our neighbor in Virginia was an
incredible guitarist and he played all over the state in a classic rock band. He got me
started on the guitar and since then music has always been my “thing”. By my senior
year of high school, I thought I would go to an in-state college for two years and
transfer to Belmont University in Nashville for audio production and music business.
I enrolled at USC my freshman year and visited Belmont again a few times during my first two years, but decided not to transfer. I changed majors from business
administration to media arts/audio production at USC, and graduated in 2008. My
media arts degree contained elements of photography, web design, audio production,
and film production, so I have a varied background with all kinds of media. After college I worked for a little over a year as a freelance recording engineer, doing records
for local bands, churches, and some re-mixes for some local dance studios. When that
business dried up, I got a job doing custom home theaters, intercoms, and DirecTV
and dish network installations. After a year and a half, my dad called one day and told
me the guy that owned the cabinet business next door to his office decided he wanted
to sell the business. And here I am six years later!
What is your business and how/why did you start your business? My business is The
Kitchen Center Inc. Bob Martin formed the business in the 1980s, and it was run by
he and his son, Bob Martin Jr. I’m told The Kitchen Center was the first independent
cabinet business that designed and sold factory-built custom cabinets in the area.

What is unique about your business (what sets you apart from the rest)? A common
theme from all of my customer feedback when a job is agreed upon is that at the end
of the day they felt the most comfortable with me as a designer and person. Most of
my customers stay in touch with me after the job is done and even come back to have
other rooms remodeled at some point down the road. I’ve always hated high-pressure
sales-people, and when you’re working with someone on changing their home into
something new and hard to visualize, they need to be comfortable and assured that
the end result will be something with which they’re thrilled!
Given your business expertise and the nature of what you do, what advice (whether
general or specific) can you offer to the residents? In the world of kitchen cabinetry,
be it “custom-shop”, locally built or semi-custom factory-built cabinets, you always
get what you pay for. There is always a reason that some quotes are higher than others, so ask questions about build quality, finish quality, hardware quality, and warranties. I can do a nice new kitchen with some inexpensive all-plywood cabinets, but the
warranty may only be 1-3 years. For a little more money you can get a product backed
by a reputable factory for as long as you live in the home!

Editor’s Note: Keowee Key resident Larry Gabe (pronounced GAHbee)
sat down with Keowee Life to tell us about his new book, Little Things
Win Big Games. If you know anyone playing the game of baseball, this is
a must-read, and it’s great for any fan as well. This book does a fantastic
job of explaining the fundamentals of the game, which are increasingly
overlooked in today’s game.
What was your inspiration for the book? Watching high school, college and profes-
sional baseball, and seeing players at all levels consistently make mistakes on baseball
fundamentals because they were never taught the right way to play the game.
When did you write it and how long did it take? The book was released November 2,
2015. It took me 17 months to complete the book (16 chapters) and get it published.
What’s its content? The book is all about
baseball fundamentals. It is a how to play
baseball the right way by position; hitting,
pitching, running bases, stealing bases,
pick off plays, rundown plays, sliding,
bunting and strength and conditioning.
There’s a chapter on every position, and
the book considers the future of baseball,
which is changing before our eyes. Many
pitchers are throwing nearly 100 mph or
more, what does that mean for baseball?
How does one hit “flame thrower” fastballs? Read Little Things Win Big Games
and see if you agree with the author!
What makes it unique? It is the only
book of its kind that goes in-depth
defensively, with a chapter at every
position, including 14 pages of examples on how to play first base. Offensively, there are 25 pages on hitting
with many pictures (145) illustrating
the points made. In addition, I explain
why players need to do things the right
way, the way being taught in the book.
The objective of the book is to raise the
level of baseball played in the USA by
teaching fundamentals that have been
lost and are no longer taught to many
players. The teams that win are the
teams that do the little things better
than the opposition. The emphasis is on
reacting, not thinking and then acting.
If a player has to stop and think about
what to do when the ball is hit to him,
it’s too late; the play is over.
What will readers benefit from reading
Little Things Win Big Games? Coaches
will benefit by using the book to develop
practice lesson plans that eventually will
cover the total spectrum of baseball. They
need to teach our younger players the
right way to play the game. Players will
learn how to properly play their position,
and develop an understanding of how to
interact with their teammates in given
situations, as well as what the proper play

What’s your history that qualified you to write the book?
I played baseball and fast pitch softball from the age of 8. I
played college baseball at State College of Iowa (now University of Northern Iowa). My career batting average was .312.
My senior year, I was All North Central Conference first
baseman. I played for an Iowa baseball and basketball Hall
of Fame Coach in high school, and an NCAA Hall of Fame
Coach in college. I also played semi-pro baseball during the
summers with two Iowa Hall of Fame Coaches, one who is in
the National Coaches Hall of Fame and National Coach of
the year. The White Sox, Orioles and the Phillies scouted me
during high school and college. I attended two try out camps,
one for the White Sox and one for the Phillies. In addition, I
played World Class fast pitch softball for 6 years. We played
against such teams as the King and His Court, Eddie Feigner,
and The Queen and Her Maids. Our regular schedule was
75-80 games per year against the best teams in a three-state
area, including the World Champion Aurora Seal Masters,
who we beat both games of a double header.
Tell us about your family: My wife, Jane, is a former school-
teacher and teaching tennis professional, and lives a very active
life style in Keowee Key. I still play senior softball with the Lake
Keowee Senior Softball team, which has a 80-90 game schedule

am and Deone Davis divide their time between their
home in the Atlanta area, and their Keowee Key home.
You will always find them at Keowee Key during the Oconee
Christian Academy’s soccer season. Sam has been volunteering as a soccer coach at the school for two years. He had been
a recreational soccer coach in the Atlanta area for 16 years,
and always dreamed of coaching at a high school level. When
the opportunity arose to coach at OCA, he accepted the position as a volunteer coach. He has been an assistant coach for
girls’ soccer and most recently the varsity boys’ soccer coach.
His wife Deone quickly grew to love OCA as well and now
serves on a marketing committee and has become a volunteer
substitute teacher for our elementary division. The Davises are
blessed to be working with great kids from a wholesome academic environment. They see this as an opportunity to help
foster good sportsmanship within the competitive sports program. As soon as they became involved at OCA they realized
the benefits of volunteering their time and talents as well as
supporting the school financially. They would love to see more
Keowee Key residents visit the school and get involved.
Keowee Key residents Rob and Cyndi Ragusa also have been
active volunteers at OCA and presently have a son in the
senior class. Rob has served on the baseball committee and
has been instrumental in the development and construction of
a renowned baseball field in 2012 and its continued expansion
as well as participating in many fundraising opportunities. His
wife Cyndi has volunteered for fundraising events, assisted the
librarian, and has served on parent and academic committees.
Rob and Robin Neyer moved to Keowee Key after Robin’s
retirement from 28 years in public education. Robin soon found
herself being called to a position as part-time elementary principal at OCA in 2013. Her dedication to the vision of the school
and the wonderful students and staff has led to many hours
of volunteering beyond her scheduled work day. Rob has also

dedicated his time on weekends while home in South Carolina
to some volunteer projects at the school.
Oconee Christian Academy has been blessed to have passionate volunteers further improve the quality of our programs at
school. An important goal of the school is to teach students the
value of serving others. Volunteers from the community are
wonderful role models to support this goal.

OCA is an accredited independent interdenominational Christian school located on Highway 188 in Seneca. The school was
established in 1993, and has been at its current location since
2001. The vision of Oconee Christian Academy is to prepare
leaders to boldly use their gifts, talents, and very lives to serve
Jesus Christ. That vision can only be accomplished with the
dedication of our board, staff, parents and volunteers.

There are multiple ways individuals can get involved as volunteers at OCA. They offer opportunities to become mentors and
tutors, be a guest speaker, substitute, work in sports, music or
drama programs, school nurse for a day, or share expertise as a
leader on the school’s board of directors.
Also greatly appreciated are charitable scholarship donations.
These dollars help families who desire a safe and excellent education in a small setting and financially can’t afford to send their
children to a private school.
Oconee Christian Academy also holds its annual fundraising
Golf Tournament in April at Cross Creek Country Club. We
would love to have some teams from Keowee Key join us for fun
and fellowship at this worthy event.
