The early years...
Dj Kensho Aka DJK was born in 1980 haling from a small town just outside of London in Essex, home to
acts like Depeche Mode and The Prodigy.
Music was pumped into his ears from an early age, his first memories as a child was sounds like The Rolling
Stones, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix to James Brown. His mother has always been a driving
force of musical inspiration to him as she was a raver back in the "white gloves and whistle days" during
the late 80s & 90s. From then on he grew up around an eclectic mix of music, ranging from Acid House
and Techno, Trance, Drum & Bass, Rock, Pop and Electro. In 1993 he started partying with his Mum and
spent most of the the night scanning the DJs, watching and studying them, listening and learning.
In the mid 90s he started working at a skateboard shop & park in Essex, the owner was like an older
brother and mentor to him and educated him in the arts of Skating, B-Boying, Graffiti..most importantly
he was introduced to Hip Hop and Turntablelism. His first encounter with mixing was as a 14 year old in
late 1994, it was then that he practiced scratch techniques for hours every day and got to performing
and organizing numerous skateboard competitions and after parties.
1996 - 2000
Kensho started his first residency at 'The Sun Rooms' (Southend, UK) in the Summer of 96. His events
became legendary, crowds developed, grew and folded from venue to venue, like the 'Bakers Bar' and
'Clarence Yard Wine Bar'. This showed off his other-side combining a twist of sophisticated Hip Hop,
Lounge, Nu Jazz and Ambient Chill.
He played various nights at the legendary 'Saks Nightclub' warming up for DJs like Pager and DnB Legend
DJ Zinc. The period from 1996 to 2000 was a very important period of time for Kensho as this was where
he become truly inspired and a regular at the well known London institution 'Turnmills' at nights called
“Head Start” and “Heavenly Social" which can only be described as a blue print for the Electro Techno, Trip
Hop and Breaks scene of the 21st century, taking place in the sweaty basement of 'The Albany' pub in
Central London. This is where he got some of his key influences as a DJ and performer, each week watching acts and artists like Cold Cut, John Carter, The Chemical Brothers, Fat Boy Slim, Andrew Wetheral
and lots more from the good old big beat days. It was around this time he appeared in the music video
for the spectacular Chemical Brothers, entitled 'Block Rocking Beats'
2002 - 2005
In 2002 at 22 years old, DJK started his bachelor's degree at 'The University of East London' (he later
transferred to Greenwich University) where he began to experiment with both audio visuals, music, video
and fine arts. This is really when DJ Kensho was born and started developing his signature style combined
with unique visual shows or solo DJ performances.
He became a Resident at ‘Duel Bar’ (East London), had regular bookings around London and spun records
at the South London skate jam and various arts and music festivals over the years whilst studying and working with a mixed bag of talent and artists.
It was during the early 2000s that he created a good name for himself in the UK Hip Hop, Drum & Bass
and Breakbeat scene. Back then he was known as 'Ambush', the former member MC / DJ & Co-producer
for the 'Camp of Concentration' (now known in the Hip Hop world as the 'Secret Order'). He would drop
both rhymes, beats and turntablelist skills at venues like 'The Sun Rooms', 'Sax Nightclub', 'Dragon Bar',
'Cargo' and '93 Feet East' to name a few. After graduating from university Kensho decided to take some
time out to go traveling around Asia with his girlfriend and after 6 weeks of traveling their feet finally
landed in Thailand.
2006 - 2010
After a promising DJ and production career start up, he left London and established himself in Asia,
settling in sunny Phuket. It was not long, before he was quickly snapped up, starting his first residency at
the chic and sophisticated 'Red Room' working along side guest DJs like the Phuket House Mafia and the
remarkable DJs Ofey and Nakadia amongst others.
A year later he moved on to the popular Allan Zeman 'Silk Restaurant and Bar' and from there he began
work as Events Consultant and Resident DJ at Babylon Beach Club, in 2008. This is where he started the
group called 'Siam Syndicate' consisting of various DJs, artists and musicians.
2009 was a good year for Kensho starting at the high end lounge and fine dinning restaurant 'Rain & Hail'.
It was here that he started to perform with his long term friend Chris Melchior a very talented UK Violinist and Producer. Later that year he started a weekly residency at the 'BYD Lofts Lounge' every Friday
night playing Funk Soul, Electro, Lounge and incorporating various members of the 'Siam Syndicate' as well
as guest DJs from around the globe.
In 2009 he started as ‘Resident DJ and Musical Director’ at the award winning 'Indigo Pearl' resort
http://www.indigo-pearl.com where you can still hear his sounds projected all around the resort.
He also held down a successful monthly residency at the stylish and popular 'White Box Restaurant and
Lounge' www.whiteboxphuket.com where Kensho got to spin along side a diverse range of musical maestros.
In 2010 his residency at Bed Supper Club's www.bedsupperclub.com Sound Phuket and had host to a great
team of local talent and incredible international DJs such as Calvin Harris, DJ Craze, Martin Solvig, DJ Dan,
Sandy Riviera, Freestylers, LTJ Bukem and lots more.
