Traditional Chandeliers
The word “chandelier” originates from the Latin word “candelabrum”,
a branched candle holder that is suspended from the ceiling.
Today, of course, most chandeliers are electric light holders.
Originally, they were simply shaped, made out of wood or iron
and were used in Anglo-Saxon churches even before the turn of
the first millennium. Brass as a base material for chandeliers
was first used in the late Middle Ages.
During the eighteenth century, Dutch and Flemish
craftsmen became known for their brass chandelier design and
manufacture. British companies were also important suppliers
of chandeliers for early American churches or homes. The
Dutch, Flemish and British started a tradition that is still being continued around the
world today.
Here at Holtkötter, that same tradition is being continued with
particular care and attention to detail.
In the following section, we are proud to present the widest variety of traditional
colonial chandeliers available today with respect to style, size and choice of finish.

We offer a variety of different traditional finishes that recently went through a dramatic revival.
Pewter
We have a wide variety of fixtures available in Pewter, from a
small five light chandelier to large
Architectural sizes. The Pewter
finish fits very well with many
different fashionable decorating
colors.
Antique Brass
Our antique brass finish is
applied in the following way:
First, the brass parts are
antiqued, then they are brushed
and highlighted, and finally a
lasting lacquer is applied to
preserve the finish.
Fume
Hand-Brushed Old Bronze
The finish Fume tries to capture
the aged appearance of the
brass chandeliers in the days
before they were lacquered.
Hand Brushed Old bronze is
one of the most exquisite and
expensive finishes crafted by
Holtkötter.
Since they were not lacquered,
all chandeliers had to be polished with a brass cleaner on a
regular basis. Over time, most
people would only clean the
highlights of the chandelier, leaving the less accessable parts of
the chandelier to itself. The
unpolished parts would take on
the antique finish over time.
All the parts are brushed by hand
before the bronze finish is
applied. After “bronzing” the raw
parts, each part is polished with
a special brass brush. Portions of
each brushed part are highlighted before applying a special
laquer to enhance and preserve
this beautiful finish.
