PROSE & December 16, 2015 Volume 3 “ Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow.” Submitted By Matti Dixon happy holidays -Mary Anne Radmacher Meet Schedule Pittsburgh Holiday Invitational WOW! As Condors coaches this year we already received our gifts from you, the swimmers. Though the weather outside has not been frightful, the swims inside have been oh so delightful. We could not be more proud nor more excited about what has already been achieved as well as what is still to come. Hopefully, all of you are making plans for a truly memorable holiday season. There is no better time to step back and take in all of the wonder of those around you and the amazing year that is soon to become part of the record books. While we have our own families, be assured that our memories and source of joy this season comes from all of you and the Condors. It is special to be part of this organization and we are very thankful to be able to share in this journey with all of you. The Pittsburgh meet this coming weekend will top off our first half of this short course season and we feel that the Condors are poised for best performances across the board. It is always exciting to come together as a team and work towards a common goal. We expect that energies will be at an all-time high and swimmers will be pushing themselves as well as cheering for others as we bond together as CONDORS. Away to the window we flew like a flash, Tore open the curtains to get a view of this crash. The moon glistened on the beautifully falling snow, Making it difficult to discern what was happening below, When what to our wondering eyes did appear, but a broken old bus and eight coaches in gear, With a jolly driver screaming for all to swim, We thought for a moment it must be St. Jim. More rapid than Condors his courses they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: “Now, Dorsey! Now, Theo!, Now Don and Will Guy! On, Christina! On, Andrew! On Jon and Furey! To the top of the blocks! and first to the wall! Now swim fast! Swim fast! Swim fast all! As quickly as you can kick under water fly, Tighten those streamlines and shoot for the sky. The next morn to Pittsburgh the bus chugged along With fire in our bellies and our minds strong— A couple movies and a stop for a bite, it’s hard to believe the meet starts tonight. Then all of a sudden we were at the pool And though we had butterflies we still looked cool. After our warm-up we all gathered together Pledging that this weekend, we swim for each other, A motivational speech by the coaches in blue, And all of the swimmers knew what they had to do. A raucous Condors cheer then back to the stands, Every one of us clapping and shaking hands. When back in the bleachers what do we hear, But a joyful melody ringing in good cheer; For it was Jolly St. Jim with a message at last— “Happy Holidays to all, and be sure to swim Fast!” On October 29th through November 1st, Kevin Gu and Coach Jim attended the National Select Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Kevin was selected for having one of the top 6 IMX scores in the Country for 15-16 year old males and only 34 male athletes attended the camp. On Deck the practices were lead by 3 times former Olympian and Gold Medalist, Brendan Hansen. The USA Swimming National team was training at the OTC at the same time and contributed to the camp with some motivation talks by athletes Michael Phelps and Allison Schmidt. Coach Jim and Kevin also spent most of their days in the classroom learning from top collegiate coaches and OTC staff. Former Michigan Women’s Head Coach, Jim Richardson spoke about “the growth mindset” and “grit”. Former World Record Holder and University of Alabama presented his experiences as a swimmer and coach and the improvements in training in his 40 years of competitive swimming. Other presentations were video study of top Olympic athletes, drug and supplement education, and post race recovery. Overall, the most exciting part of was the friendships that Kevin made with swimmers across the country. Kevin saw many of his new friends at the Speedo Junior Championships this past week where he made the B Final of the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:00.80. holiday practice schedules PRACTICES LOCATION DATE LOCATION PRACTICES Normal Normal Mark Twain WCC Monday, December 21st Felix Festa Normal Normal Normal Mark Twain WCC Tuesday, December 22nd Felix Festa Altered Tuesday HS Meet Normal Normal Mark Twain WCC Wednesday, December 23rd Felix Festa Holiday Party Details Below Gold/Senior 7-9 AM Silver—8-9:30 AM Mark Twain Thursday, December 24th OFF OFF OFF OFF Friday, December 25th MERRY CHRISTMAS OFF OFF OFF OFF Saturday, December 26th Felix Festa Normal Gold/Senior-7-9 AM Silver-7-8:30 AM Bronze/St Dev-8-9 AM Mark Twain Sunday, December 27th Felix Festa Senior 1/Sen -9-Noon Gold-9-11 Brz/Slv/SV/JV-9-11 AM Gold/Senior-8-11 AM Silver-8-9:30 AM Brz/St Dev 10-11 AM Mark Twain Monday, December 28th Felix Festa Sen/Gld-5:15-7:15 AM Senior Dryland Normal PM Gold/Senior-8-11 AM Silver-8-9:30 AM Brz/St Dev 10-11 AM Mark Twain Tuesday, December 29th Felix Festa Sen -5:15-7:15 AM Normal PM Gold/Senior-8-11 AM Silver-8-9:30 AM Brz/St Dev 10-11 AM Mark Twain Wednesday, December 30th Felix Festa Sen/Gld-5:15-7:15 AM Senior Dryland Normal PM Gold/Senior only 7-10:30 AM Mark Twain Thursday, December 31st Mark Twain Senior 1/Sen-7-10 AM Gold-10-11:30 AM OFF OFF Friday, January 1st HAPPY NEW YEAR OFF OFF Normal Practice Mark Twain Saturday, January 2nd Felix Festa Normal WFSL Meet At Mark Twain 8 AM Warmup Mark Twain Sunday, January 3rd Felix Festa Senior 1/Sen -9-Noon Gold-9-11 Brz/Slv/SV/JV-9-11 AM Wcc is closed for the Holiday from Thursday, December 24th, 2015—Monday, January 4th, 2016.
