A BROOM OR A BRUSH?
We can offer you a choice of a black tampico round brush or a unique
Shaker style woven broom made by North Woven Broom in Crawford
Bay, using unprocessed broom corn. Both are made of plant fibre
and will not melt when hot coals are swept. Please specify which you
would like. If you do not specify, a tampico brush will be sent.

ootenay Forge is situated in Crawford Bay, a little hamlet on the shores of
Kootenay Lake in south-eastern British Columbia. It is an area renowned
for its natural beauty and also its artists and craftspeople. We invite you to
visit us if you are in the area. Within walking distance of our shop there are a
Broommaker, a Woodcarver, a Copper Enamelist, a Pottery studio, a Jeweller,
and a Weaving studio. Local establishments also display works by local artists.
We are proud to be one of The Artisans of Crawford Bay.
In our gallery you will see all the items in this catalogue
plus other one-of-a-kind pieces. You are welcome to watch
us work and learn a little about this age-old craft. Our workshop is always open to the public.
Blacksmithing is the original craft of working with iron, going back 3,500 years.
Although the tools have changed over the years, we still follow in the footsteps
of the blacksmiths of old, using many of the same techniques. With small,
energy efficient propane forges, we heat the steel to 2,0000 F (1,2000 C) and
hammer, bend and twist it into all the beautiful shapes you see here. We use a
few modern tools, but it’s with hammers that we forge life into the red hot steel,
and the ring of the anvil is music to our ears.
