PAGE 2 NORTHWESTERN STAR MAY 2016 President’s Message The Free 220 SE AKA “The Parts Cars Blues” I got a call the other day from a gal with a car that could not stay. She said I could have it all, if I would just haul it away. Find a parts car for me that has all the doors and a trunk with a key. Make it a Mercedes-Benz before the summer time ends. Asked my buddies about what it’s worth. Won’t know ‘til we check the girth, Change the filters, add some gas, and maybe it will run at last. Find a parts car for me that has all the doors and a trunk with a key. Make it a Mercedes-Benz before the summer time ends. These verses are part of a song I wrote (with the help of my wife) about a car that “found” me. A woman called me and said she had purchased some property about a year-and-a-half ago, and there was an old car parked in a field. She said it was a Mercedes Benz and that she wanted to get rid of it. I thought it was going to be an early 70’s model that had been sitting around for a long time, just rusting away. I drove out to the Orchards/Vancouver area and discovered, to my great surprise, that it was a 1959 220 SE sedan – nicknamed “Ponton” because the fenders reminded people of the pontoon floats on floating bridges. It was a fairly rare car – one of only 1974 cars made in 1958 and ’59. It was missing a trunk and all the doors. The dash board was mostly complete, with the original radio, gauges, steering wheel, etc. Even the original driving lights were on the car and in restorable condition! The headliner and grab rails were missing and the rear leather seats could have been cleaned up and used, but the front seats needed to be completely restored. The main drawback was that it had a LOT of rust problems. I was able to get the needed parts to complete the missing doors, the wood door trim, a trunk, as well as a spare set of fenders and extra hood. Then I needed to figure out what to do with it. Unless someone could do all the metal and paintwork by themselves, the cost of restoration would have quickly exceeded the value of the car. It could have been parted-out for an equivalent – and much more valuable – coupe or cabriolet model. A club member told me he had sold a Ponton sedan and gave me the contact information for someone who might be interested in this car. I called the guy, and he was, indeed, interested in buying it. I sold it to the new East Coast owner – and he re-sold the car on EBay! While these transactions were going on, the car sat in my little single-car garage, waiting to be trailered to the new owners. A few weeks ago, the Ponton was moved to a new home, spare parts and all. I have attempted to find out who the new owners are. Maybe the story will continue. But for now, my song has an ending … however, it could have another verse or two in the near future. PAGE 4 NORTHWESTERN STAR MAY 2016 MBI Spring Tech Day Recap By David Abarr Portland Section A glorious spring day greeted members of the Portland section on April 2nd at MBI in Portland. A great turn out and Ernie Brawley brought in his 300SL / W196 in. I brought in my newly acquired SLK230 r170 for fluid changes. I was helped by Seth Lee. The techs here are first class. Greg Carlson always puts on a great event with the generosity of the staff at MBI. There was flurry of activity from transmission services, wheel alignments, oil changes, CIS fuel injection trouble shooting and under carriage inspections. These events are very informative for those wanting to learn and get a little dirty. Prime rib lunch as always was served and a highlight to my spring every year. Thanks to Hal Harper for the great photos ! Dave MAY 2016 NORTHWESTERN STAR PAGE 5 Springtime is HERE! By Greg Buechler Portland Section Not a Member? Join MBCA today! As the weather warms and dries (FINALLY!), it's time to get Sunhilde spiffed up for the season. Yesterday afternoon she was thoroughly washed, dried, and clayed, then covered in cotton bedsheets overnight. This morning, she has been waxed (Griot's Best of Show and 6" buffer to apply; removal by hand). The interior has also been vacuumed, and all the leather is marinating in Griot's Leather Care for a couple of hours before buffing out. Once I'm done with this email, I clay the windshield and use the buffer to apply glass polish. I'll eat lunch while that dries, then buff it out and apply Griot's Glass Sealant (Rain-X, for all intents and purposes. Buffing out the leather will be the last job for today, and Sunhilde will move back to her accustomed spot so her older sister can come back inside. Tomorrow, the wheels come off one by one to be clayed & waxed, and tire shine applied inside and out. The front wheel wells will also get wiped down with Griot's Undercarriage Spray. Once the wheels are finished, she is fully ready for the world. I'll also take care of lubricating all the roof seals and latches in the next couple of days, too. Five weeks and counting until DiamondGrind Floors comes to grind, fill, seal, and polish the garage floor.... MAY 2016 NORTHWESTERN STAR PAGE 7 My Day @ the Petersen By David Abarr Portland Section On a recent trip to Los Angeles I had the opportunity to visit the new refurbished Petersen Automotive Museum. It is an amazing journey through the history of everything automotive. The Rolling Sculpture exhibit on level one is a amazing look into the art of European automotive manufacturing of the 1920 and 30’s. The art of BMW with a special look at the famed BMW art cars was wonderful. My favorite was the Precious Metal gallery of all silver iconic cars. The 1954 W196 R streamliner number 16 was the one of these icons on display. This car helped Moss and Fangio clinch the F1 world championship title in 1954 and 1955. I took the famous vault tour as well. Not being able to take pictures here are some Mercedes Benz highlights I saw. Saddam Hussein’s 1978 W100 600 Landaulet Jack Nicolson's 1972 Short WB W100 600 A W126 chassis European model S Guard 1954 Buick Coupe with a G55 engine and interior (Named as a G54) 1886 Benz Patent-Motorwagen replica 1923 Mercedes Targa Florio So many other great cars at this time. If your in the area I highly recommend a visit. PAGE 8 NORTHWESTERN STAR MAY 2016 The International M-100 Group Lode Fest 2016 is here - Visit beautiful Portland, Oregon !
