Feature Article
When Berenika
Bailey decided to
try filmmaking as a
potential career at
the age of eighteen,
she may not have
realized where
her career would
take her.
Keith Nagel (right) as Kevin
While Berenika began her studies at the
Warsaw Academy of Film and Television,
they drew her from Poland to the USA
to establish a production company and
develop a slate of films focused on families and with inspirational messages.
Although she directed a number of films,
she confessed that her true passion resides
in producing films like the recent Mobster
Kids that was found on InkTip and written
by Rick Blackwell. For Berenika, a script
has to have a heart and soul and speak to
audiences on a different level than just
pure enjoyment. Seeing as she holds a
Masters degree in philosophy, it’s no surprise she wants the audience to walk away
with a deeper message about life, love, or
the nature of reality.
Mobster Kids had all the right elements
that she needed in a script: a family demographic, action, and a little something
beyond just commercial value. The story
is about four kids raised by parents on the
wrong side of the law who have to unite to
stop a gang of bad guys trying to take over
the mob. “It has the elements of Spy Kids
with the action of Karate Kid,” Berenika
said. “While it does deal with mob aspects,
it does it in a humorous way and not for
the sake of violence … [It] was a very
well-written script: family-oriented, light,
with great sense of humor and action
elements. It was fun, dynamic, smart, and
most importantly, it had a soul and a heart
we always look for. It had a philosophical,
psychological, and social message in it
beyond action elements. It was teaching
young audiences about the nature of martial arts, that the real fight is always within
yourself and not with anybody else. It
carried a message about friendship, honor,
family values, and loyalty.”
Which is exactly what Berenika looks for
in a script. “A script has to have a heart and
a soul. It has to have an edge and an angle,
an opinion, a philosophical or psychological or social question asked. It has to tell
the engaging story but also leave us thinking, uplift us, give us different perspective,”
she confessed. “Commercially entertaining
stories are good too and certainly have an
audience, but I’m after something bigger
than that. Additionally, if it targets an
intelligent audience and is female-oriented
(since females [are beginning] to account
for the biggest moviegoing demographic)
then it’s a perfect match for me.”
Screenwriter Rick Blackwell was a perfect
match too. Berenika confirmed that he
“was excellent.” He flew his family to the
L.A. premiere of the film and was part of
the Q&A afterwards. “It showed he really
cared,” Berenika said. “More impressively,
he was open-minded and understanding
about production changes that altered his
original script. Most writers are very sensitive about that and would get very defensive
about it, but he was curious and receptive to

Berenika has a clear vision for Magic
Elevator. Early on in her career, she realized that she wanted to build a multi-media
studio with a production division, international sales department, distribution
wing connected to a film funding, and
more. “I am after building a structure, a
system that shapes the careers of the best
writers, actors, directors, and producers,”
she said. Magic Elevator is currently at the
financing stage for a slate of three films
for 2014: a horror, thriller, and an action.

understand how the writing translates into
limits of physical production and how to use
this perspective for the future.”
The film stars Keith Nagel, Dillaran Martin,
Ariana Guido, Jonathan Rosenthal, Cece
King, Jeff Allen, Martin Santander, Natalie
Soleil and Heaven Lee Kramer. Jeff
Solema and Berenika Bailey produced the
film with the help of Melissa Webb, who
was co-producing. Magic Elevator was the
only production company involved.
The thriller, Jackoburn Manor, is another
InkTip sourced script. “I’m a fan of your
company and website because you have
so much good content at one place, which
saves time for someone looking for the
matching script. The search engine is intuitive, well organized. No producer should
ever have issues searching for content
there.” The action film is designed to be
a Chinese co-production to reach theatrical
Chinese audiences. “Mobster Kids will be
showcased to international distributors and
buyers at the Hong Kong Film Market this
year. Then its sales agent will present it at
MIPTV, Cannes market and AFM later this
year,” Berenika said. Domestic distribution
is currently being negotiated.
Although she is close to 6,000 miles from
where she began her film career in Poland,
Berenika seems at home in Los Angeles,
producing films she believes in. When
asked what her favorite part of filmmaking
was, she said, “The first and last stage
of the development process, when you
choose the right story, the right script, you
rewrite parts to fit your production needs
and possibilities. I love to strategize the
execution timeline, put the team together
choosing the right co-producers who then
interview their director and cinematographer choices, and then the casting process
starts. This is one of the most exciting
stages when the film transforms, as ultimately your actors will shape the theme
of the film with their personalities, sense
of humor, and interpretation. The film
shifts from the written words to the cast’s
personal styles and the world they create.”
InkTip eagerly awaits the release of
Mobster Kids, as well as seeing how
Magic Elevator’s new slate of films will
entertain audiences of all ages.

Q &AScreenwriter
with Mobster Kids
Rick Blackwell
After a co-worker encouraged Rick Blackwell
to put his well-spun tales down in writing over
a decade ago, Rick decided there was nothing
to lose in trying his hand at the craft. Shortly
after, he completed his first book. And then
came his second book.
He found his talent for oral storytelling
translated well into written form, but he
didn’t know it would eventually move from
computer screen to the big screen. After a
couple of books and a number of screenplays,
Rick Blackwell’s writing came to life in the
family-friendly film Mobster Kids.
InkTip: How did you transition into
screenwriting from writing novels?
Rick: A few years after my second
book, I decided to take some time
off from writing. While taking time
away from writing books, I read a few
screenplays and got interested in the
format and its own unique creativity, so
I purchased the Screenwriter’s Bible and
read it several times over the next couple months and even took a few classes
online. I guess I like the idea of being
able to give the reader/viewer a unique
view of the story that I was seeing in
my head. I started out writing sketches
at first, then short scripts. One short,
titled A Homeless Desire, was produced
by Each Name Taken Entertainment,
which has received some very good
reviews. I then made a connection with
a U.K. comedian named Melissa Hartzel
and teamed up with her crew writing
several sketches for their pilot comedy
show, Three Men and a Lady, which
has garnished about one million hits
on YouTube. Then two years ago, my
screenplay Mobster Kids was sold to
Berenika Bailey at Magic Elevator from
the InkTip preferred newsletter.
InkTip: And now we have reached the
reason we’re here. How did you come up
with the story of Mobster Kids?
Rick: Besides writing, I instruct several
forms of martial arts at my martial arts
studio which I have run for over 25 years.
When I approached writing the story, I
was looking to write something in it with
martial arts for kids, but also it had to
teach some life lessons as well.
For these and many more scripts go to our website www.InkTip.com
Rick: I’ve been trying my hand at different genres – not wanting to be locked
into one genre. I do have my favorites,
like Sci-Fi and Action, but my first love
is Comedy. It always seems to sneak into
the storyline a little bit, no matter what
genre I’m writing in.
InkTip: Now that you are a produced
writer, do you approach the writing process any differently than when you were
just starting out?
Rick Blackwell with producer Berenika
Bailey at the premiere of Mobster Kids.
InkTip: Sounds exactly like what
Berenika Bailey was looking for in a
script. Besides the martial arts and life
lesson, what direction did you decide to
take with the characters?
Rick: I decided to have the kids who were
raised by the mob do the things that kids
would normally do in that situation and
environment, like gamble and run small
scams. I also wanted a connection between
the kids, so I created a little romantic connection between the older kids.
InkTip: What type of mindset do you get
into or practices do you do when writing
a script?
Rick: I guess I’m probably a little weird
about this, but when I first get an idea,
I write it in my head like I’m watching
a movie. I do this over a couple of days
to weeks until I see the whole story as a
movie in my head, and then when I really
like the way the story unfolds, I sit down
and start writing. That’s not saying while
writing I don’t change things because
sometimes I do, with ideas that pop into
my head to make a scene better, or to
make someone reading it say, “that was
too cool,” or, “I have never seen that in
a film.”
InkTip: I don’t think that’s weird at all.
I do something similar. Do you prefer to
write one style of genre over another?
Rick: I think producers take me a little
more seriously now and will take that
extra second to look at my logline or
synopsis. I also think I’m constantly
trying to improve my writing skills and
produce the very best script I can. And
I think also I now have the confidence
to try new things in my scripts that I
probably wouldn’t take a chance on just
starting out.

InkTip: Anything you would like to add?
Rick: I would just like to thank Magic
Elevator and all those who were involved
in the making of Mobster Kids. And I
would like to especially thank InkTip
for being the bridge into Hollywood for
us dreamers. There is nobody out there
doing more for writers than InkTip.
Nobody. They opened doors that I would
have never been able to open.
You can check out Rick Blackwell’s
logline for his script Legends on
page 25 of this magazine.
InkTip: What are you working on now?
Rick: I just finished a children’s fantasy
screenplay titled Dream Warriors. It’s
about kids who choose to go out and play
using their imaginations as opposed to
staying inside and playing videos games.
Then, one day they are called upon to
save the World of Imagine from the
Without. They are beings that steal
all hope, dreams, and imagination. It
has an underlying story about one of
the children who is physically abused
by his father, and how his power of
imagination changes his life and
that of his family, restoring his
family to the place of love that they
once shared. I have had two others
optioned: Forever and Always, a
Christian Drama, and Earth Gods,
a Sci-Fi / Comedy.
InkTip: What advice can you give
other writers who are trying to get
their foot in the door?
Rick: Polish, polish, and polish
your script again. After writing
a script, I set it aside and don’t
pick it back up to polish it for at
least a week; that way my eyes
are fresh and things like mistakes
in grammar stand out. I would
advise writers to get people who
don’t know you to read your
work. Friends and family will
never be able to critique you
honestly. Be open to criticism
