Darryl Lankin, Squadron Commander This will be my last "From the Helm" message as Commander of Brant Squadron. Included in this issue of our newsletter should be the Report of the Squadron nominating committee in addition to the report of the Niagara District nominating committee. It seems that the year has barely started and here it is winding up already. I began the year with the idea that I could turn around the recent years of decline which saw fewer and fewer students (and members) each year through the simple expediency of splitting the CPS 'The Boating Course' into two shorter, more friendly and easier to take courses, Boating I and Boating II. But this did not meet with all of the success that I had hoped for. It's still early, but it seems that this move was not the 'magic pill' that was and still is needed. There are other things which can be tried yet. I invite all members to attend the Brant Squadron 50th Anniversary Annual General Meeting where I will turn the helm over to longtime member and Squadron volunteer Don Elliott. Don has been on the executive and in the class room a long time, probably about 20 years. He has observed successes and failures. No doubt he has ideas which may fill our class rooms and build our membership. I invite all to come out to welcome him as Commander . Because this year's AGM is immediately followed by a fancy dinner, guest speakers and cake and ice cream to celebrate our 50th year, there is no time left for our annual chilly cook off. So there has been some talk of holding the Annual Brant Squadron Chilly Cook Off at the Summer solstice barbeque. That along with the usual barbequed steak with baked potatoes and salad. No one should go home hungry. I have a secret plan which is almost sure to win the competition. I'm taking on all comers. Bring your best chilli... I can hardly wait. WHAT’S THIS? SEE PAGE 11 page4 “…. from the Classroom” by Randy Johnson (Brant Squadron’s Training Officer) We have had some interest in the VHF Radio course scheduled to begin on 6 April, but we would love to have a full classroom. Anyone who hasn’t obtained a VHF Restricted Operators Certificate (Marine) should be aware that fines for operating a VHF without a license can be substantial. Most new VHF radios come equipped with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and even if you already have a VHF operator’s certificate, but it doesn’t include DSC, you need to update your qualification. CPS is the only recognized provider of VHF certificates in Canada. A Boat Pro weekend program at the Brantford Police Station is set to go on 9 and 10 April. It is an opportunity for your friends and family to obtain the only PCOC that is recognized in those USA jurisdictions, that have implemented a similar program to Canada’s. As I wrote in January, our course registrations are discouragingly low. So low, in fact, that they threaten the health of our volunteer organization. The number of boaters is not dropping, so it is unlikely that the need for quality safe boating education is significantly diminished. It is probable that the government PCOC program leads people to believe that the minimal knowledge needed to pass the examination is sufficient for safe operation of a pleasure craft. CPS, however, still believes in teaching comprehensive courses that will keep boaters safe. We are trying to be true to that idea, therefore, our in our PCOC course (Boat Pro) we endeavor to present more than the legal ‘minimum’ information. If members are aware of family and/or friends with an interest in any of our courses, please encourage them to enroll. Help keep them safe on the water. Review by A. L. Meens “Sloop” – Restoring My Family’s Wooden Boat – An Adventure in Old Fashioned Values. This is the title and quote on the book cover. If you have ever worked on a wooden boat or built one or repaired the old family cedar strip, you will relate to this book. Robb takes us to the Martha’s Vineyard Buzzard’s Bay area of Massachusetts. He travels the back roads and island paths of the few islands that separate Martha’s Vineyard and the mainland…..the area that forms Buzzard’s Bay. If you have ever travelled this area or plan to do so, Robb’s book will enhance your understanding and feel for this area of - shall we say – “backwoods Buzzard’s Bay”. Sheila and I hope to travel there someday soon and enjoy the flavour of the area. I know that the descriptions provided in this book will enhance our trip. Robb starts with the family 12.5 foot boat - Daphie - an L Francis Herresholf design. Francis as any good wooden boat dreamer knows was the son of Nat. His family designed some of the most famous and beautiful ocean racers and cruisers of the early 20th century including the Americas Cup J Boats and the beautiful H28. The book “Sloop” takes us into the world of wooden boats, their challenges and their qualities. Many of these qualities are not found in today’s plastic boats and “that is a good thing” as Martha Stewart would say…more time on the water. However, for those of us who like the feel and sound of wood….we will enjoy this book. For those of us who enjoy knowing a little of the history and characters that populate a region, this is a good book for us. And for those of us who dream of restoring a wooden boat, this is a good book for us. But most of all, this book is an easy read and a fun book. It looks at life from the human side of helping your neighbour and sharing time together. This is a book you can read while enjoying your summer cruise. It is a book you can enjoy in front of a winter fire - between seasons - and it is a good book if you are considering rebuilding your dream wooden boat. I would recommend this book as a gift for your favorite sailor. “Wow !!” That’s all you could hear at our 50th Anniversary Committee meeting when Sharon Reeve displayed the beautiful, nautical and CPS themed quilt, that she is making. The back is also finished in a nautical theme and the sailboats will all have burgees. Her generosity with her time, talent and resources is demonstrated by the fact that she is making the quilt to donate as a draw prize during our 50th Anniversary Celebration. Tickets will be on sale at the 50th Anniversary Dinner on April 15th and at the Niagara District AGM on April 16th for $5 each or three for $10. Members who are unable to make one of those dates can obtain tickets by calling Donna at 519 759 4475 or Norman at 519 761 2902. We will be glad to arrange for you to get them. The draw will take place on April 16th, just prior to the District AGM. page10 Notice of Annual General Meeting To: The Members of Brant Power and Sail Squadron March 8, 2011 Take Notice that the annual general meeting of Brant Power and Sail Squadron will be held at The Polish Hall, 154 Pearl St, Brantford, Ontario On Friday, April 15th, at 1800 ( 6 p.m.) for the purpose of: (a) Receiving and, if thought fit, approving the Reports of the Officers of the Squadron: (b) Receiving and, if thought fit, approving the financial statements of the Squadron for the twelve month period ending March 31, 2011, and the Report of the Squadron Auditor thereon: (c) Considering and, if thought fit, adopting the following resolution(s):None submitted (d) Electing the officers of the Squadron: (e) Appointing the Squadron Audit Committee (f) Considering such further and other business as may properly come before the meeting: The Report of the Squadron Nominating Committee is attached to, and forms part of this notice.
