Is there anything that can be done? Deformities of the jaw S By Paula Broadhurst adly, sometimes foals can be born with deformities and these can be associated with the jaw and mouth. The severity of the abnormalities can vary widely and subsequently, the inevitable effect on the foals quality of life and the requirement for potential treatment if appropriate. The most common deformity of the jaw is an “over bite” where the upper jaw incisor teeth stick out in front of the lower jaw incisors, this is commonly referred to as parrot mouthed. This condition can sometimes be relatively mild and be of cosmetic significance only, or it can be quite dramatic and affect the horse’s ability to eat and graze properly. There may also be a hereditary element to this problem should the horse be considered for breeding. Less common is an “undershot” jaw were the lower incisors protrude in front of the upper jaw teeth. Depending on the individual situation and severity, there are surgical procedures that can be performed to try and improve the appearance of both of these deformities. A more severe and complex deformity is called a “wry nose” or “squiffy face”. This is where the top jaw and nose is twisted to the side and the lower jaw is often twisted to the opposite side. This condition often prohibits the foal from being able to suckle and therefore they have to be tube fed in order to survive long enough for any treatment to be considered. Usually, unless very mild, foals with a wry nose are euthanased as the prognosis even with surgical treatment is very poor and the chance of the foal growing into a self-sufficient animal extremely low. The deformity usually involves significant compromise of the nasal passages and any surgery would be complex with multiple procedures required as the foal continued to grow. Another deformity involving the upper jaw is a condition called a cleft palate. This is where the hard or soft palate (roof of the mouth) is not completely formed resulting in an opening from the mouth into the nose. These can vary in size and extent with the more severe cases unable to suck at all or having significant regurgitation of milk out of the nostrils while trying to suckle. The foals usually fail to thrive and often get a secondary aspiration pneumonia. Occasionally small clefts can sometimes only cause minimal signs and be discovered as an incidental finding when the horse is endoscoped as an adult. Diagnosis of this condition may be made on the clinical signs but for confirmation of the extent of the problem an endoscopic examination is usually required. Depending on the extent of the deformity surgical treatment is possible in some cases however, it may be very difficult to perform and prone to complications. Other deformities can be maleruptions and abnormalities of the teeth. These problems are often not apparent at birth and only present themselves as the foal gets older and the teeth start erupting. Treatment or management of these cases needs to be considered as a case by case situation. Usually a veterinary examination is recommended in the first 24 hours after a foal is born to perform a carefully examination for any abnormalities or problems that might require attention. However, if you have any concerns immediately after your foal is born then veterinary advice should be sort immediately. I began riding out for Phil York, Point to Point Trainer in Surrey back in 2008, after about a month I frustratingly broke my foot on my own horse out hacking. Those six weeks in plaster made me realise how much of a thrill it is to ride racehorses. At the time I also shared a beautiful ex racehorse, Another Debt (Annie) whom was your stereotypical racer! Fast forward a few years to 2011 and I was given a once in a lifetime opportunity. My partner, a passionate racehorse owner, offered me the chance to ride our pointer Le Comte in a race. I swiftly completed all the relevant applications to gain my point to point licence and February 2012 should have seen me ride in my first race. Sadly it wasn’t meant to be and we lost Ninja the morning of the race. I felt I wasn’t ready to ride another so I didn’t race in the 2011/12 season. A thrilling summer of new horses and continual race riding education for myself meant I had the opportunity to potentially ride Dancing Jack in a hurdle race under rules. I flew through my Cat A licence at the the British Racing School and actually rode my first flat race under rules at Lingfield on another of our horses, Murfreesboro in November 2012. I rode a further two times, once over hurdles at Ludlow and again on the flat at Lingfield. I wasn’t a natural race rider but all I kept thinking was ‘I am living the dream’. I was so lucky to take my hobby to the race track! Unfortunately, Amateur races for myself were not very often so I took the plunge and we looked to find me a pointer. In steps Dave. Bought from Ireland, DaintyDavey took me on my first spin over chase fences at Charing in March 2013. This shortage caused the price of a hunter bale to shoot up to around £10. No surprise that horse owners tried to find a suitable alternative and wood pellets became an excellent replacement. Wood pellets for bedding have already been the first choice in Canada and the USA for many years. In the UK only one wood pellet product has been available for some years. A number of companies quickly jumped on the wood pellet bandwagon, providing products of varying quality and price. In the current financial climate, horse owners are desperately looking for cost reducing products. The advantages of wood pellets over shavings are well publicised (highly absorbent, fresh smell, easy to muck out, reduced storage space and size of muck heap, composts quickly) and the lower cost is moving many horse owners over to this product. CONTACT DETAILS For more info please contact Herbie on 07850799782 or herbie@EQProducts.biz 14 ❘ NagMag October 2015 WHAT ABOUT THE QUALITY? Wood pellets consist of wood fibres which are originally the by-product of saw mills, which saw harvested round wood into construction wood after stripping off the bark. A number of wood pellet manufacturers use mechanical hammers to chop up the wood down to the fibres. The wood fibres go into the pellet machine under high pressure and high temperature, resulting in a wood pellet with a low moisture content and no fungi or bacteria. The natural resin in the wood, called lignin, binds the fibres together. Originally, wood pellets were only used as bio fuel for heating and generating electricity. The calorific value of 10 kg of wood pellets can be around 48 kWh. In general, three different qualities of wood pellets are available: GRADE A: accordance GRADE B: GRADE C: industry produced from virgin pine or spruce and manufactured in to the European standard EnPlus-A1 produced from a mixture of tree types, including hard wood produced from recycled wood from the building and furniture n For use as horse bedding, only Grade A wood pellets should be used. n H ard wood contains some aggressive substances, which could cause severe damage to the horse’s feet. n R ecycled wood is not suitable at all as this could contain wood preservatives and other dangerous materials. n It is also important to use pellets, which have been screened (dust extracted) several times before being bagged. n M ost pellets come in 10 or 15 kg plastic bags. n W hole pallets contain in general 100 bags of 10 kg (total 1000 kg) or 65 bags of 15 kg (total 975 kg). n It is not necessary to buy ‘special’ pellets for bedding as long as they are of the correct quality. HOW TO DETERMINE THE QUALITY? Your supplier should be able to give you detailed information about the origin and ingredients of the wood pellets. Before you commit yourself, ask for a sample. There are a few checks you can carry out yourself: n W hen emptying the bags, there should only be a minimum amount of dust n T he pellet should be light in colour. A darker pellet indicates the presence of bark, hard wood or other contamination. n P ellet size should be on average 6 mm in diameter and not longer than 30 mm long. n A fter adding water to the pellets, they should expand within 15 minutes and smell of pine, not wet wood. Only twelve 12 faults, Emily Llewellyn picked up four faults, but Nana Dalton and Georgie Spence both jumped clear. “He’s jumped double clear, I couldn’t ask for more!” said Nana Dalton. “He performed a respectable, solid dressage test and loved every minute of the cross-country which was a really strong course. He just grew to be a real four star horse!” “It’s a bit annoying to have a fence down,” said Emily For Advertising Opportunities visit www.NagMagMagazine.com Llewellyn. “He was looking at the crowd! Our dressage let us down a bit, but he did some super trot work. He was amazing cross-country. There’s no better feeling than jumping clear round one of the toughest courses in the world!” “I’m over the moon!” said Georgie Spence. “This is our sixth completion; he’s jumped double clear both this year and last. He’s a horse that wants to jump clear.” “It’s a dream come true!” said Vanessa Jamieson from Crawley, part-owner of Wii Limbo. “This horse keeps improving – his dressage was the best ever - all down to Georgie’s fantastic riding!” Tina Cook also jumped clear, remaining the highestranked British rider in 8th place with William Fox-Pitt two places lower. Despite a painful leg, Michael Jung maintained his lead on Sam, adding the Burghley title to those of European, World and Olympic Champion, proving that he is indeed the FEI number one rider. He was lying down in a dreadful state of emaciation waiting for death to release him from his suffering. His hip bones had actually punctured the skin and were visible and when he had tried to stand, he had staggered and fallen onto a nearby fire, badly burning his leg. Her immediate reaction was to try and find someone who could relieve him of his misery. She tried to make him more comfortable and found a bucket of water and some bran and soft hay, which he tried to munch in a halfhearted way. She then went off to try and find a vet. It was a three hour drive to the nearest vet and when she reached the station she found that the vet had gone to the capital which was in those days an eight hour drive as the roads were so bad. It took her four days before she was able to return to the horse and by that time, he had managed to stand up with some help and he was pottering about somewhat shakily, but still eating the bran and hay she had left for him. She said there was just something about him that made her decide against euthanizing him. The vet treated Lazarus is nicknamed “The Boss” by the staff his wounds, gave him antibiotics and treated him for sleeping sickness before leaving him in Stella’s care. Shortly after this Stella had to return to UK and she bought the photos of Lazarus with her. She urged me to help her do something to help the horses of The Gambia. We approached one of the big international equine charities and they were very kind and offered to send trainers out twice a year for five years and this was very helpful, but we knew the animals and their owners required 365 days a year of care. There were so many others like Lazarus who needed help. We flew back out to The Gambia and went to all the villages in the area to ask how we could help them with their animals and the answer was always the same, because there were so few vets and even fewer medicines in the country, they said that when their animals became sick, they just had to watch them die as there was no help available. Lazarus demonstrated to us that it was possible to restore even a severely emaciated horse to life and usefulness. He was starting to feel much better and his lovely nature shone through. He adored Stella and would tell us when she was in the vicinity long before we had seen her with a quiet whickering of welcome for her. The courage he had shown to “hang in there” even through the darkest of times was an example to us and he is the real founder of The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust. We Lazarus and Heather Armstrong 24 ❘ NagMag October 2015 For Advertising Opportunities visit www.NagMagMagazine.com Tel: NagMag on 01273 491 922 or email: info@nagmagmedia.com October 2015 NagMag ❘ 25 The Story of Lazarus ❘ By Heather Armstrong have never been able to save a horse quite so severely emaciated since that time. Thirteen years later, Lazarus is still with us. He is nicknamed “The Boss” by the staff. He is supremely gentle in the stable and one of my favourite past times is to sit on the edge of his manger whilst he nuzzles through my hair. He has his own pet chicken who hatches out brood after brood in his loose box. He has been directly responsible for the fact that we have treated in excess of 70,000 horses and donkeys, we now hold four training courses a year for Government paravets who are posted all over the country so more and more animals are getting access to better veterinary care throughout the country. We teach in 10 schools and have built a road across a swamp to help the local community to have better access to schools, hospital and markets for their produce. All this is due to one courageous and very beautiful horse who showed us the way. Lazarus is now retired, though he has worked for the charity as a driving horse, he has farmed, he has taught staff to ride and he is expert at opening his stable and taking himself off across the bush at high speed! He is getting a little stiff in his old age so last year I purchased a magnetic band to go around his fetlock. It happened to be a bright yellow colour. The next morning 26 ❘ NagMag October 2015 when I came onto the yard all the horses were wearing bright yellow reflective bands around their fetlocks. The staff all felt that if Lazarus had a yellow band, so should their horses so he is still leading and inspiring us all! NM FU RTHER IN FORMATION The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust is a small charity registered in the UK and The Gambia. Founded in 2002 by the late Stella Marsden and her sister Heather Armstrong. It is an enormous challenge to treat the many sick horses and donkeys in the Gambia and the charity relies heavily on volunteers to help combat diseases such as Sleeping Sickness (Trypanosomiasis), African Horse Sickness and tick fever. They need your help and make every single penny count. Their aims are achieved through a variety of projects including: Educational Programmes, Community Development, Veterinary Treatments and Collaboration. For further information on this wonderful charity visit their website www. gambiahorseanddonkey.org.uk For Advertising Opportunities visit www.NagMagMagazine.com Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust BCF Technology kindly donate a digital X-ray system and generator T he Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust are delighted to announce that Veterinary diagnostic imaging specialists BCF Technology have donated a brand new Carestream Vita Flex Digital are familiar with what is needed have contributed to the design of the hospital. Staff for the new centre are being trained at Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust’s original centre in Sambel Kunda so that when the new centre is X-Ray system and generator for use in their new centre being built in a more urban area of The Gambia. BCF Technology hosted talks in Scotland for part of The Vets with Horsepower Team motorcycle ride in support of The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust. The team of equine vets rode motorcycles around the British Isles and Ireland, delivering high quality talks and raising money for The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust. BCF hosted the talks to vets and horse owners at their new global headquarters in Bellshill near Glasgow. It was the fifth Horse Power event, so far the team has raised over £280,000 for a variety of causes. The concept was the brainchild of Professor Derek Knottenbelt, who has gathered other renowned equine vets who are keen on motorcycling to join him on Horse Power CPD tours as far afield as Russia and Morocco. Professor Derek Knottenbelt said, “We are absolutely astounded by the amazingly kind donation of a digital X-ray system and generator. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would have such a system that could be used at the equine hospital in the Gambia. BCF have supported us every year since we started Horse Power CPD back in 2010. We are completely blown away by such a generous donation. It will make a real difference to the lives of those we are trying to support and the care of their working animals – thank you BCF.” Gavin Mitchell, BCF Managing Director commented, “Derek and his team are a true inspiration and we are proud to support them. They are a very special bunch who make a major difference to the lives of many. We are absolutely delighted to be able to help this year by hosting and supporting one of the events. We knew Derek wanted to kit out the equine hospital in Banjul, Gambia that they help build last year. We really wanted to support Derek and his team and knew the X-ray system would be ideal.” The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust’s new centre will consist of an equine hospital, stabling for 25 in-patients, offices, a visitor centre and a lecture room together with accommodation for volunteers, students and staff. Vets who have previously volunteered in The Gambia and opened at the end of this year it will be able to function immediately.
