He played four sports in high school, and then narrowed his specialty to polevaulting while attending Ohio University. Arguably the best-dressed and kindest member of all-time, Tom has been an ACC member for more than 43 years, as well as serving as Past President (1994). He describes his success as partner in the Woodhouse Lynch Fine Clothing business, and his long-term relationship with the Club. ACC: As a purveyor of fine clothing, you conducted quite a bit of business at the Athletic Club, true? Tom: Yes. But it’s not the kind of business that you get from handing out business cards and pushing your services. The Athletic Club is about relationships and getting to know people and being able to help them when they need you. It always felt good to help someone look their best in the business world or for a special occasion. ACC: It seems as though you were headed towards a different field---maybe coaching or teaching---when you graduated from OU. What happened? Tom: Well, when I graduated, I had an opportunity to manage a men’s store in Athens. That grew into merchandising, buying, and marketing for an entire chain (University Shops). I moved to Columbus in 1968 when we opened a headquarters here. In 1972 Jerry Woodhouse and I decided to go into business together, with an emphasis on more traditional fine men’s clothing. We first set up shop in a suite on 4th and Broad. Business grew quickly and we expanded with fine clothing stores for men and women in three locations downtown and two locations in Worthington. ACC: Today there are all kinds of methods for gathering information about what customers want or need. How did you do that in 1972? Tom: I sat on the ledge of a fountain right on Broad Street and watched business professionals as they went about their days. I saw what looked good, and what didn’t look so good, and we came up with a plan to help those professionals look their best. At the time there was an ad campaign out for Head and Shoulders shampoo, “You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression,” and that was the truth---then and now. I gave presentations to classes to explain the importance of professional dress. ACC: You retired and closed your last shop at 146 East Broad just two years ago. Why then? Tom: It was time. I always said that when it was no longer a source 12 | ACCent Magazine of enjoyment, it was time to stop. I still enjoyed it, but not as much. The retail industry has changed so much, and so has the style of dress. Today there is much more leeway in the professional world, and “Business Casual” is an accepted fashion. I still believe that there is something to be said for traditional clothing of fine quality that is tailored specifically for the wearer. It’s classic and can be every bit as comfortable as more casual clothing. ACC: Where do you get your clothes now? Tom: I have enough clothes to last me until I am 105. After that, I’m going to start looking. ACC: Moving on from fashion. You have a brother, Jim, who has been an ACC member even longer than you. Tom: Yes. He had been at the ACC about six years before me. That’s how I knew that the Club was for me. He was President before me, too, in 1989. We are the only brothers to have held the presidency at the Club. Plus, we are both Past Presidents of the Touchdown Club that was such a big organization in the Club’s history. And, I know you won’t believe this, but we have never had an argument. Not once. ACC: Who is the better-looking Lynch brother? Tom: Wait. This might be our first argument. ACC: How has the Club played a role in your life? Tom: The Club has been there for me through everything. Professionally, it was where I conducted much of my business. Personally, we have made lifelong friends who will always be dear to us. My kids (Tom, Mike, Wendy, Matt and Kelly) have great memories of the Club---from Gym ‘n Swim to Zoo nights. My wife, Mary Lou, remembers the days that women were allowed in for 22 seconds on the third Wednesday, and we still laugh about that. I think that the reason that the ACC is still so successful is that our staff and Board has always been willing to listen to its members, has had an awareness of the community, and is ready to do things differently when change is needed. ACC: The Club must be doing something right to keep you as members for all of these years. Tom: Yes. In the mid 80’s, I took stock of my life and made an effort to return to core values---being a good parent, trying to do more kindnesses, and recognizing how I can help others. We started a men’s group that met monthly at the Club in 1987 with these values in mind, and I think that the ACC was a perfect starting place for it. The Club is always so warm and welcoming because of the people inside. It’s a great mix of people—not all uniform and perfect, but human. You can honestly feel the caring from staff and members alike and you want to pass that along. I still feel special every single time I walk through the doors. “Steve always greets me with a smile and he remembers my birthday and my mother’s birthday every year. Who else can do that?!” -Tom Lynch Photo Gallery & Announcements Pictured above: Micah Fening and guests; Pictured below: Jennifer Stiff and Toby Tomlin Members headed out to the CCC for the first annual “Chip & Sip” Par 3 Outing.
