Message from the Dean
As the last calendar page of the year turns and we enter 2008, it is a time to reflect on the previous year
even as we implement plans for the new one. At UW-Marinette, we have so much to celebrate; I’d like
to take the time to thank our campus community, which has made it all possible, and to share the exciting programs we are launching in the new year.
2007 witnessed a tremendous growth in programming, made possible through expanded partnerships,
in response to local need. Just last January, we announced our inclusion in the National Shipbuilding
Research Project grant, funded by the US Navy. In collaboration with Marinette Marine and 15 other
shipyard and design-agent partners, as well as the University of South Alabama, we have been working
throughout the year to develop a shipbuilding design curriculum, on schedule for completion in March
of 2008. This means beginning in the Fall 2008, we will be offering Applications of Modern Shipbuilding
Design to students with a high school diploma and AutoCad experience, a course which will prepare
them for employment as entry-level designers in the industry.

Also this past year, we developed the engineering bachelor’s degree completion program with UWPlatteville, which will be offered beginning this spring, 2008. 48 area employers told us they needed
more engineers; in response, we are pleased to bring Platteville’s engineering program to our area, via
streaming media and a mobile laboratory.

Further, in 2007, we piloted a Dual Enrollment program with Marinette High School, whereby high
school students can take university courses on the high school campus at a 50% tuition savings. We are
delighted to be expanding this program in Fall 2008 to include Peshtigo High School, which will be
offering our Math and English courses to high school students.

We are also grateful to the Board of Regents for granting UW-Marinette a tuition freeze in 2007, keeping us the very best bargain for a UW education! Through Guaranteed Transfer, students can begin
their first 2 years of university study with us and seamlessly transfer to the 4-year UW of their choice
with Junior status. This path not only saves them money but improves their chances of success, as
research continues to show that students who start in the 2-year UWs persist in their baccalaureate educations and graduate at higher rates than students who begin anywhere else in the state!

Community & Campus Partnerships
Marine Design Program on Target
UW-Marinette and Marinette Marine have partnered to help meet the needs of the shipbuilding
industry for shipbuilding designers.
The first phase of the program, curriculum
development, is on target for completion in
March. Shortly thereafter, the program will be
ready for its first students. Shown at the January

New Engineering Degree
Following an extensive survey of employers in a
six-county area, UW-Marinette has teamed up
with UW-Platteville to bring a bachelor’s degree
in engineering to the campus beginning this
spring.
The program is geared to non-traditional
age students with work and family commitments
who cannot relocate to start or complete a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
The engineering degree completion was
piloted in the UW Colleges at UW-Fox and
UW- Rock, where professors teach face-to-face
courses to 175+ engineering students. UWMarinette will be the first UW Colleges campus
to receive Platteville’s engineering courses via
s t reaming media over the internet. UWPlatteville will bring a mobile laboratory to campus every 4-5 weeks for face-to-face laboratory
instruction for the program.
Platteville offers degrees in electrical,
mechanical, industrial, civil, and environmental
engineering as well as in engineering software
and engineering physics.
Dual Enrollment Increases Options for
High School Students
Students at Marinette and Peshtigo Hi g h
Schools are now eligible to earn college credit
through dual enrollment programs.
Students in physical education, math and
English classes are taught at the high schools by
high school instructors approved by UW
Colleges using UW-Marinette curricula for those
courses.
While students must pay for the tuition
costs of the courses, the cost is half for the same
course at UW-Marinette because the salary of
the instructor is paid by the high schools, according to the agreement.
“This year, we are also promoting a campaign through our Foundation, whereby donors
are encouraged to give an amount equivalent to
half the tuition cost of a three-credit course, so
that opportunities to earn college credit may be
expanded to all high school students at
Marinette and Peshtigo who want to participate
in the dual enrollment program,” said Dean
Langteau.

Fine Arts Series a Collaboration with
UW-Madison Arts Outreach
Two concerts remain in the fine arts series which
began in 2007 with a performance by the
Wisconsin Brass Quintet in October.
Made possible through a grant from the
James Martell Family, the UW-Marinette Music
Department and UW-Madison Arts Outreach
were able to collaborate to bring three outstanding ensembles to campus.
The Wingra Woodwind Quintet will perform Tuesday, January 29 and the Pro Arte
Quartet will perform Sunday, April 6. Both concerts are scheduled for 7:30 pm in the Herbert L.
Williams Theatre. Tickets are $5 for the general
public and $2 for seniors and students. Tickets
can be purchased at the Main Reception office
before the events weekdays 8 am to 5 pm or at
the door 1 hour before curtain. Call 715-7354313 for reservations.

Program Collaborations
Continuing Education offered 107 programs
this year with 2144 participants through partnerships with local businesses and schools. This
year the Children’s Theatre gave 336 children the
opportunity to be in live theatre productions:
Free to Be You and Me, You’re a Good Man
Charlie Brown, and Seussical the Musical.
International student numbers were also up
this year as 49 young men and women from 17
countries enrolled for the English as a Second
Language program or for academic classes.

Teaching Teams at the Center,” for the 12th
National Learning Communities Conference in
Indianapolis in November.
Oitzinger said the students “gave an excellent
team presentation on student teaching teams –
based on their experiences (in two learning communities each) and on observing, videotaping,
and interviewing other students in the Fall learning community, ‘Imagining a Better World.’ This
presentation was specifically mentioned in the
conference’s closing keynote address. Our students’ participation in this conference led the
Student Senate to decide to encourage and partially fund future faculty-student collaborations at
regional and national conferences.”
Athletic Teams Shine
All three athletic teams earned Region II titles and
competed at state level in 2007.
WJCAA Player of the Year, LaRae Kostreva,
was named to the WJCAA 1st Team All-State in
Volleyball, and the WJCAA All-Tournament team
in basketball. She was also named MVP in both
sports. Tara Johnson was named to the WCC 1st
Team All-Conference in volleyball, and Ji l l
Roehm earned the Most Improved Player award.
Bethany Buehrly was named Most Im p rove d
Player in Basketball.
Kareem Jackson was named to the WJCAA
All-Tournament Team and the WCC AllConference 1st Team. Nathan Staidl earned
WJCAA All-Tournament Team and WCC AllConference Second Team honors as well as the
Most Valuable Player award. Nickolas Nielsen

Mention, and Thomas Byers was named Most
Improved Player.

Crew Club Helps Others
Students Excel in Theatre
The Crew Club, a service club that involves students in projects such as helping older or disabled
residents move or do yard work, sponsored a rummage/bake sale to help fellow student member Jay
Nelson with medical bills following a motorcycle
crash. The effort raised nearly $1500 including
matching funds from Trivant Financial. The Crew
Club co-advisors are Scott Ward and Ma ry
LaCasse.
Opportunities for students to participate in theatrical productions were abundant this year at
UW-Marinette. Theatre on the Bay opened the
year with Dr. Doug Larche’s Number the Stars, a
play about Danish resistance in World War II, with
Suzanne Chrisiansen, an international student
from Denmark, taking a lead role.
The Bards on the Bay Playwrights Festival in
April featured many student actors as well as two
student playwrights, Tristan Schuh and Jenna
Cornell.
TOB’s summer musical Pippin and comedy,
Don’t Dress for Dinner featured student Ricky
Berlin in lead roles for both productions.
In the fall Preacher Rose, also by Dr. Doug
Larche, featured a large cast of students with Tim
DeMeuse and Colleen Johnston with major roles.
Freshman Ryan Dusso had a major role in the
Children’s Theatre production of Seussical the
Musical.
Student Publishes Book
Student Darwin Adams published his book
Escaping from Quantrill’s Trap in December, 2007.
The story is based on the experiences of his greatgrandfather, John Adams, an Oneida soldier, who
survived the 1863 Baxter Springs Massacre, which
took place during the Civil War.
John Adams was from Bagley, Wisconsin, and
fought with the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry. The story
tells how he had to conceal his heritage to join the
unit and how he survived not one, but two massacres.
The 274-page hardcover book was published locally and illustrated by Glenn Trybom, a student
from UW-Marinette who also contributed original
illustrations to The Da Vinci Diaries published by
UW-Marinette art professor James LaMalfa this
year.

Cynthia Bailey was named Academic Staff of the Year
for the 9th time in her career at UW-Marinette.
Mike Bartlett organized the UW-Marinette team for
the American Mathematics Association of Two Year
Colleges Mathematics League Competition. He also
presented a Community Forum on “Math Anxiety” in
December.
learning communities, advising the Writers’ club,
organizing poetry readings, and, with husband Art,
supporting the campus in countless ways. In December
she led a Great Books Dinner & Discussion session on
Truman Capote’s novel Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Randy Crozier was named Support Staff of the Year.
Wendel Johnson presented a Community Forum on
Amtrak and organized with Dr. West, a National Public
Lands Day Celebration and work event at Gov.
Thompson State Park, a Darwin Day presentation, and
public lectures on Lyme disease and genetics. he also
played a knowledgeable John Scopes in a campus reading of Inherit the Wind.
Gabriella Sheldon had two submissions published in
UW-Marinette’s Northern Lights Arts Journal. She
taught English in China. She also presented a
Community Forum on her trip to China. She will
teach English at an orphanage in Russia during the
Winterim 2007-08.
Daniel Kallgren presented “Student Teaching Teams at
the Center” with Jane Oitzinger and two students,
Corey Kaempf and Sara Bertognoli, at the Twelfth
Annual National Learning Communities Conference,
November 7-9, Indianapolis, Indiana. He is also Quiz
Master for the area Hi-Q High School Quiz program.
Paul Erdman published four articles in Northwoods
Journal Vol. 5: “Astronomy–It’s All in the Latitude” in
June; “Where Are the Planets This Summer?” in July;
“Meteors and the Moon in August” in August; and
“Where Are the Northern Lights?” in September.
Mark Klemp hosted a talk from the No rtheast
Wisconsin Section of the American Chemical Society.
Dr. He n ry Bungay from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute presented “Bioenergy without Hype.”
Albert Bugaj published two reviews in the Seventeenth
Mental Measurements Yearbook.
Jennifer Flatt published "Reflections on the First Years
of My Career at a Two-Year Institution" in the
Association of Departments of Foreign Languages Bulletin
38.3 (2007).
David Giebler was named Professor of the Year. He
directed three West Shore Chorale concerts in April
and December and performed with string players from
Marinette at the Madeleine Island Summer Chamber
Music Camp.
Steve Golz was named Instructional Academic Staff of
the Year.
Katherine Holman retired in May following a 17-year
career teaching English classes, developing innovative
Dorothy Kowalski was reelected as the secretary of
Marinette’s Board of Recreation Programming.
James LaMalfa’s historical novel, The Da Vinci Diaries,
illustrated by himself and student Glenn Trybom, was
published this year. He exhibited his work at the West
Bend Gallery of Wisconsin Art, the CAST drawing
show, the UW Colleges faculty exhibit at UW Stout,
and the Old Church Gallery in Cedar River, Michigan.
He also coaches soccer for UW-Marinette.
Paula Langteau’s book, Miller and Middle America:
Essays on Arthur Miller and the American Experience was
published by University Press of America in March.
The book also contains her essay “Arthur Miller’s Clara:
An In t e r rogation of Middle American Political
Correctness.” She gave a Community Forum on Miller

Theatre on Miller in October. She serves on the boards
of directos of Wisconsin Women in Higher Education
Leadership (WWHEL) and the marinette Kiwanis. In
November, she began serving on the M&M YMCA
Endowment Committee. In April she performed in
the funraising production of Kiwanis Kapers.

Amy Reddinger received her doctorate in English from
the University of Washington in August. Her essay “Just
Enough for the City Limitations of Space in Baldwin’s
Another Country” has been accepted for publication at
African American Review and will be published in 2008.
Doug Larche wrote the lyrics to and performed UWMarinette’s new commencement hymn, Our Haven on
the Bay. His plays were given 29 additional productions in venues across the U.S. He directed Number the
Stars, Pippin, Don’t Dress for Dinner and Preacher Rose
for TOB. Three of his plays were featured in the Bards
on the Bay Festival which he directed in April.
Tirza Shulman submitted for publication two papers:
“Differences in the Ability to Repair Negative Affect” to
Emotion and “Composition and Consistency of Desired
Affective State: The Role of Personality and Motivation”
to the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. She
also presented her paper on “Individual Differences in
Beliefs About Affect & Cognition” at the annual meeting of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology,
January 2007, Memphis, Tennessee.
Beth Mikle received the Support Staff of the Year
award for the third time in her career at UWMarinette.
Dail Murray spoke at the Association of American
University Women meeting on the Amish school
shooting. She submitted “Slanderous Rumors and
Cultural Boundaries: Tales of the Amish as Told by
their Neighbors” to Western Folklore, a scholarly peerreviewed journal.
Jane Oitzinger presented “Student Teaching Teams at
the Center” with Dan Kallgren and two students,
Corey Kaempf and Sara Bertognoli, at the Twelfth
Annual National Learning Communities Conference,
November 7-9, Indianapolis, Indiana. She also
arranged a workshop on Academic Freedom, a readers’
play by Marnie Dresser (Richland), Oct 23; and a
Poetry Reading by J.D. Whitney (Marathon), Oct 31.
She was also a Great Books Dinner & Discussion
leader on Lisa See’s novel Snowflower and the Secret
Fan.
Tina Oman wrote three UW System Institute for Race
and Ethnicity grants for the exhibit entitled "All of Us
are Related: Each of U is Unique,” for a performance
by Preacher Moss, and for a reading seminar on
Afghanistan. She also wrote a two-year grant for a
Julie Urban was nominated by her department for the
2006-2007 Chancellor’s Excellence in Teaching Award.
She participated in a water quality monitoring team on
the Menominee River in October. She was also a referee
for the manuscript “Wal-Mart and Values: Painting the
Town Red?” for The Journal of Economics, December
2007.
Scott Ward was named Kaplan Fellow for 2007-08.
Keith West defended his dissertation, Eco-Industrial
Parks in the United States: Do Practical Examples Exist
and Can They Se rve as Models for Brow n f i e l d
Redevelopment?, before the Department of Geography at
UW-Milwaukee and he received his PhD in Geography
was in May. He has also been involved in the Sierra
Club water quality monitoring project in the
Menominee River Watershed. In April, he presented a
Community Forum on "Highways of Water: Canals and
Interstate Commerce.”

Alumni Success
Mary Johns (1977) who taught COM ARTS 104/Applied Journalism at UW-Marinette for 7 years
while working as a staff writer for the EagleHerald, left her position in 2007 to become executive
director/CEO of the Marinette/ Menominee Area Chamber of Commerce. Johns, who has a chamber and public relations background as well as a UW-Madison degree in journalism, says she uses
skills fine-tuned in the classroom on a daily basis. She is now a member of the UW-Marinette
Foundation board.

Dan Groleau
Dan Groleau (1978) earned his associate's degree from UW-Marinette, his bachelor's degree in
Psychology from UW-Madison, an M.S. in Administration from UW-Green Bay, and his Ph.D. in
Adult Education from Capella University. He held management positions in the private sector while
teaching part-time for Silver Lake College, Lakeland College, and Northeast Wisconsin Technical
College before becoming the Director of Human Resources for Nicolet Area Technical College in
Rhinelander, WI. He currently facilitates an online HR Management course for UCLA Extension
and teaches courses as needed at Nicolet College. "I had a fantastic learning experience at UWMarinette where it all started for me. I have fond memories of my time at UW-Marinette. The faculty and staff were outstanding," says Dan. While residing in Marinette, Dan was an Emergency
Medical Technician with the Emergency Rescue Squad. He also served on the Marinette City Council
and as a Deputy Coroner for Marinette County.
James Thull (1996) transferred to UW-LaCrosse for his B.S. degree, then earned an M.A. in history and a Masters in Library and Information Science from UW-Milwaukee. He is currently a reference librarian/associate professor at Montana State University-Libraries. His most recent publication is “American Indian Religious Freedom Act,” in The Encyclopedia of American Indian History.
Last year he presented a poster session at the International Conference on Digital Libraries in New
Delhi, India. In January of 2008, he will speak at the BOBCATSSS (a consortium of European
libraries) convention in Zadar, Croatia. "UW-Marinette was the perfect place for me to begin my

studies. What I learned from the professors, librarians and support staff at UW-Marinette allowed me
to be successful in college and in life."
Faith Nibbs (2004) earned her M.A. at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where she

has been studying on a fellowship and research assistantship. She spent last summer on an NSF predissertation travel grant to her field site for preliminary research in Hmong immigration issues in
Gammertingen, Germany and Texas. She will spend next summer at Oxford for a four-week Refugee
course, and has been invited to teach seminars at the University of Muenster while doing her Ph.D.
work in Europe. The University of Kent in Brussels also invited her to be part of an EU-wide think
tank on migration issues that affect policy. She will have her ABD in May and will leave for Germany
in June where she will spend a year doing her dissertation field work.
Pernille Sorensen (2006), originally came to UW-Marinette as a Youth for Understanding student from Denmark in 2004. She returned to the campus as a regular student to complete her associates degree in 2005 and then transferred to UW-Green Bay where she holds the distinction of being
the first student to complete the largest number of credits in the shortest amount of time. She earned
her bachelor’s degree in Economics Summa cum laude in December of 2007 and plans to begin graduate school in International Macroeconomics and Finance following a trip to Africa.

Scholarship Recipients
With the lowest tuition of any school in the 26-campus UW System, UW-Marinette also offers scholarships to help
with tuition. The good deal that UW-Marinette offers got even better for students this year when 15 new scholarships
totaling over $11,000 were added to the 32 scholarships worth over $17,000 already offered to UW-Marinette students each year. This represents the largest dollar amount of scholarship money available to students in the history of

The year 2007 was such an exciting and productive year on our campus
and such a monumental year for the UW-Marinette Foundation. I mean
that literally, as the long held goal to erect a physical symbol to acknowledge those in the community who support us, was finally completed! In
April the Foundation threw a wonderful party to unveil the Legacy Wall,
a beautiful multi-metal and wooden design etched with each of the
names of our past and present supporters. It is particularly important
that this sculpture grow and change as new gifts are granted and new
names are added. It is a true living legacy. Please make a visit to our
Theater Arts Building to see the Legacy Wall and attend one of our theater productions, music events or art gallery shows while you are there.
Our Foundation’s assets were generously increased by donations and
pledges during the Legacy Wall Campaign, resulting in DOUBLE the
scholarship dollars available to students!* What a tremendous show of
support from the community for our excellent institution. With these
additional funds we were also able to enhance our cultural arts programming and increase the funding for faculty development, one of the primary missions, along with student scholarships, of our Foundation.
This year also brought six new faces to our Board, bringing new vitality and a variety of expertise. We welcome
the strengths of Sue Erdman, Mary Johns, Katie Jones, Nancy Kallgren, Jim Martell & Tom Maxwell. On behalf
of the entire UW- Marinette Foundation Board of Directors I want to express our gratitude to all of you who continue to support our outstanding university and to our campus professors, staff and administrators whose skill and
