It is said that Szczecin is a green city. There is a lot of truth in it - a lot of parks and squares here.
There will be a green place to relax and have fun even in the middle of the city. In addition to the
greenery, the main landmark of the city it the water. Some even think that Szczecin is located by
the sea, but that's not entirely true. The Baltic Sea is a bit far from here, but it does not matter! We
still have water in abundance. Every step you take you can stumble across fountains, streams,
lakes, ponds and water pumps. It is them that will guide you around Szczecin.

The tour starts at a square near the main railway station. It's Tobruk Square (Plac Tobrucki). Long
ago, it was one of the most popular places in Szczecin. Residents and tourists happily strolled away
here. During the walk they could gaze at the Red City Hall (Czerwony Ratusz) adjacent to the square,
a huge building made from red bricks - hence its name. In the past it was the seat of the Municipal
Authorities. You will find one of Szczecin's fountains on the square. In the place where now an
anchor stands, there used to be a statue of Sedina. You may wonder who Sedina was? She was
Szczecin's guardian, a young woman standing on the deck of a sailing ship with the bow in the
shape of a griffin. She was surrounded by symbolic objects associated with the city.

We now go towards the river. It is the Odra flowing through the city. Alongside, a promenade called the
Piast Boulevard (Bulwar Piastowski). Strolling along the boulevard, you can enjoy the Sailors Avenue
(Aleja Żeglarzy). There are plaques and statues commemorating people and ships associated with
maritime Szczecin. Approaching the Castle Route (Trasa Zamkowa), breathe in deeply through your
nose, and you will certainly smell chocolate! This sweet and pleasant fragrance has been rising every
day for several decades from a nearby chocolate factory.
Let's move on! Walking along the boulevard we will reach the Chrobry Embankment (Wały Chrobrego).
This is the name of a huge viewing terrace, with views of the Odra River, the harbour and other
interesting nooks and crannies of the city above water. Before you go up, have a look at another
fountain. Spouting jets of water dance and shimmer in various colours! This is the second dancing
fountain in Szczecin, we will tell you about the first one a little later. Time to climb a little higher! The
small green square hides a sculpture. It shows Hercules fighting the Centaur. Who do you think won
this duel? Last flight of stairs to run up. This is how we end up at the National Museum. It also houses
the Contemporary Theatre (Teatr Współczesny). The building tower is an excellent viewing point.

Tower of Seven Cloaks/ Pomerania Duke's Castle/ water pump
We now head towards the Soldier's Square (Plac Żołnierza). Along the way we come across the Royal
Gate (Brama Królewska). It is the remains of Szczecin's fortifications. The city was once surrounded by
a defence wall and you could only enter it through one of the gates - if it was open. The Flower Avenue
(Aleja Kwiatowa) is a pedestrianized part of the Soldier's Square. You are probably wondering where
the name came from. Not so long ago, along the entire avenue, flower stalls were set up. The large
sundial suggests that it's time to move on.
The soaring white building you are standing in front of is the new headquarters of the Szczecin
Philharmonic Orchestra. It was designed by Spanish architects. Before World War II, in exactly the
same place there was a Concert Hall - Konzerthaus. The Philharmonic Hall is a living and open space
where melody, harmony and rhythm rule. You have the unique opportunity here to listen to the
sounds played live in one of the concert halls - the golden hall or the moon hall. In turn, in the music
library you will find a lush world of musical notes, musical pieces and creators of different music;
whereas the common room is the place where you will learn numerous interesting things about the
magical world of music through the use of games and fun.
We are approaching the Pomeranian Dukes' Castle. Along the way, if you look carefully, you'll see a
water pump. It's all blue, only its crown is yellow.

Historically, the pumped up water flowed directly from the mouth of the dragon! However, not all
dragon heads have been preserved to this day. The city has about 30 of these historical pumps. For
sure you will see one or two more wandering around Szczecin.
Meanwhile, we step into the castle. It was not so impressive right away.
In the past, there was a small stone building here - the seat of Duke
Barnim III. During the reign of successive Dukes of the Pomerania
dynasty of Griffin - Kazimierz V and Boguslaw X, the castle was
substantially expanded. The small courtyard leads to the great one.
Look up, the clock has eyes! The gaze of the mask follows the clock
hand, and the open jaws say the date. The castle walls house concert
halls, exhibitions, theatre, there is even a cinema! If you are a fan of
underground secrets surely will want to visit the burial vault of the
dukes of the Griffin dynasty. Later on, you can climb the viewing point of
the Bell Tower (Wieża Dzwonów) and enjoy the closer and further castle
hill surroundings. At the end, you can take a peek at the distinctive brick
Tower of Seven Cloaks (Baszta Siedmiu Płaszczy).

What are these 'seven cloaks'?
Long ago, Duke Boguslaw X was
preparing for a pilgrimage. On
this occasion, he ordered his
tailor to make seven cloaks of
unusual beautiful material. The
tailor got down to work. He cut
out the fabric in a smart way
and apart from Duke's seven
cloaks he made a dress for his
wife from the scraps. When
Duke Boguslaw heard of it, he
threw the tailor into the tower
as a punishment. Since then, the
tower has been referred to as
the Tower of Seven Cloaks.
We are at the Hay Market (Rynek Sienny). It owes its name to hay that was once sold here. The market
is surrounded by colourful tenement houses. They house a variety of restaurants and cafes. You may
want to sit down for a while in one of them. In addition to the houses, there is also the Old Town Hall
(Ratusz Staromiejski) near the market. It was built for the city authorities who a few centuries later
moved to a more comfortable and spacious Red Town Hall. Do you remember it? We saw it at the
beginning of the tour.

The White Eagle Square with beautiful fountain.
Time to see the White Eagle Square (Plac Orła Białego) with another beautiful fountain. It is where the
square took its name. On the very top of the fountain sits an eagle with wings spread out and a crown.
Water spouts out of his beak. The Palace at the Globe (Pałac pod globusem) is the most distinctive
building on the square. Maybe you can guess why such a name? To find the answer you need to lift
your head up once again, up, up, up all the way to the top. Just by the roof you can see a large globe
propped up on the heads of mythical creatures.
It's almost the end of the first tour. We will still visit the nearby St. Jacob Cathedral. Its tower is home
to a viewing deck. Fortunately, this time you do not have to climb the stairs, a lift will take us to the
terrace. And done! The view is amazing! You can now see the places you have already visited and
those you do not know yet. Is there anything that catches your eye in particular?

The second route starts at the Harbour Gate. Just like the Royal Gate, it is a remnant of the olden city
walls. Imagine that in the past it was the western end of Szczecin there. It is, after all, the very heart of
the city! The gate is richly decorated. There are various reliefs and inscriptions. At the top you can see
the city skyline. And who is this man with the beard? It Viadrus - god of the Odra River. He glances at
the Szczecin harbour and makes sure that the river does not dry out and the sailors reach the shore
safely.
What is Viadrus humming?
Probably one of the shanties.
Shanties are sailor songs. Sailors
once sang them during hard work,
such as when they had to raise
or lower the sails using heavy
ropes. Common singing of
shanties would make them feel
more cheerful and the monotonous work would become less
burdensome.

Go through the green square to get to the "water gate". The shape of the fountain is modelled on the
arches of the walls of the church located next door. Streams are lit up in colour. Squirting, they form a
water gate. There's even a footbridge, which is especially nice to walk across on a hot day.
Anders Park (Park Andersa) greets us with an interesting monument. Mr Jan Czekanowski is sitting on
a travel trunk. Go ahead, you can fit too! This monument was made far, far away, in Africa. Professor
Jan Czekanowski was a respected researcher of that part of the world. That's not all you can see in this
park. There are also two water pumps. Can you find them?
Out of Anders Park, we head towards Śląska Street built up with beautiful tenement houses erected at
the turn of the XIX and XX century. At the very beginning of the street, on the Obrońców Stalingradu
Street – Jagiellońska Street stretch, there is one of the buildings belonging to the Academy of Art – the
SZTUKATERIA Artists Retreat, and at its entry – Arteria, a coffee house and lounge. Here you can take
a break from the city walk, catch a breath with a hot, freshly brewed coffee from Szczecin’s coffee
roasting plant, a house blend of natural teas and lemonades, or you can recharge your batteries for a
further walk nibbling on homemade cake. Children can enjoy an abundant library of books and board
games.
Time to move on to Bogusław Boulevard (Deptak Bogusława). Once cars drove through there, but
now you can walk around freely. It is a lively place full of cafés. One of them has a small stage which
hosts a studio theatre and its shows. The Boulevard is a cool place to stop for a while in the midst of
the city hustle and bustle. There is a fountain here as well. If you happen to be in a hurry, the old clock
at the end of the boulevard will tell you the time. Down the Jagiellonian Street (ul. Jagiellońska) we go
to the Airmen Square (Plac Lotników). A huge statue of Colleoni, an Italian commander of the army,
stands there. The same statue also stands in Venice. The Szczecinians liked it so much that they wished
to have their own copy.

Carrying on, you can see as many as three fountains. It is Szczecin's famous Fountain Avenue (Aleja
Fontann). It's nice to take a walk there - among the trees and water. Or stop for a moment for a portion
Time to visit the Theatre Square (Plac Teatralny). Besides the Pleciuga Puppet Theatre, there is
another attraction waiting for us there - a dancing fountain! During the warmer months of the year the
show goes on every evening. There are jets of water, coloured lights, all to the sounds of music.
We are entering the courtyard of the City Hall with two fountains. The walls are of an unusual spinach
colour. Exactly the same as shortly after the building was erected, less than one hundred years ago.
Another fountain is located just behind the building of the City Hall. The water spouts out of the mouth
of the fish, and a boy playing the accordion sits just above it.
So we ended up at the Jasne Błonia common. We are greeted by a huge fountain. In winter, when the
waterworks are not running, the fountain is decorated with beautiful lights. The Jasne Błonia common
is a place loved by the Szczecinians. You can lie for hours or have a picnic on the soft grass. If you like
to walk in the shade, you can choose the alleys crowned with trees - sycamore trees. Or do you prefer
to see this all during a choo-choo train ride? This mini-train has been running for over 20 years! Out of
Jasne Błonia, into Kasprowicz Park. We are greeted by the Monument of Polish Deeds (Pomnik Czynu
Polaków), one of the symbols of Szczecin. These are three eagles ready to fly away. Huge, aren't they?

The “Birds Well” (“Ptasia studnia”) Fountain – the Rose Park “Różanka”
And now, down the hill we go! We follow one of the paths towards Rusałka (“water nymph”). Such a
beautiful name is given to a pond located at the bottom of Kasprowicz Park. There is a fountain here
too! And this huge arch? It's the Summer Theatre. When the days are warm, various performances and
concerts are held here. Time to climb the steps of the amphitheatre and go to the rose garden. Różanka
is an immensely beautiful place. A hundred varieties of roses and many other plants grow here. The
last fountain you are about to see is impressive! It presents four geese about to fly away. Long ago,
when it was established, it was called "Birds well" (Ptasia studnia).
