It’s AGM Time Again!

We are less than two weeks away from our AGM
Event. This year our Mexican members, Televisa
and TV Azteca, welcome us to Mexico City for the
first time in more than a decade. Very exciting,
indeed.
Beginning March 1st, we’ll hold our Technical,
Legal, and Board meetings at CIRT’s (Cámara
Nacional de la Industria de Radio y Televisión)
facilities in Mexico City. CIRT is an association of
Mexican radio and television broadcasters much
like the NAB in
the US or the
CAB in Canada.
We are very grateful to them for
supporting
this
event.
March 2nd is our
AGM proper, and
while there is a
short formal period where the
business of the
Association
is
dealt with, most of
the day is filled
with speakers and
panels; a day full
of strong and relevant
content.
Much of that content will focus on
the Next Generation of Television with attention to the new overthe-air broadcast platform ATSC 3.0, but other
technologies like HDR, IP production and distribution, and Colour Gamut will also be very much a
part of the discussion. Additionally there will be an
emphasis on the need for strategies rooted in business principles to make this migration happen, and
a discussion about what some of those migration
strategies may be.
You can read through the full day’s program in this
edition of NABAcaster and I encourage you to do
so. We will also hear from our Mexican colleagues
about the challenges that regulators have created
for the industry, and the state of migration to Digital Television (ATSC 1.0). North America is a
huge continent with only three countries; all at different stages in the evolution to the Next Generation of Television, but sharing similar business and
regulatory challenges. Our AGM is an opportunity
to learn and inform one another, and from that
sharing of one another’s realities, new ideas and
strategies to meet
our challenges are
a likely result.
Radio will also be
a part of our
AGM with a presentation on the
medium’s digital
interactive initiatives, but the major day for radio
will be March 3rd
with our second
Future of Radio &
Audio Symposium.
Speakers
will
address the HD
Roll Out in North
America with a
focus on Mexico,
and a panel will
address the campaign to enable
FM Chips in Smartphones and the apps that can
make radio interactive. We’ll also focus on the
Connected Car and what that means for both the
consumer and the radio industry. Like television,
radio is leaping into a next generation that increasingly looks more like a revolution than an evolution.

Over the three days in Mexico City, members will also hear about our work in Cyber Security, the Common Metadata Chip
for File Formats, and IP production and
distribution; all important to realizing the
benefits of the next generation of broadcast services.
We are again at a crossroad in our industry’s evolution much like we were with the
introduction of digital High Definition
Television. It’s important to make the
right choices and have a clear consensus
on how we migrate to these new technologies since broadcasters will have to work
with the consumer electronic industry, the
broadcast equipment manufacturers, the
regulators and the consumers themselves
to make this transition work. This is a
huge undertaking.

FOX’s Richard Friedel is Now ATSC’s Chair
The Advanced Television Systems Committee’s (ATSC) board recently elected
our own Richard Friedel as their board chairman for the next term.
Richard is the Executive VP & GM of Fox Networks’ Engineering & Operations
and plays an active role here at NABA on both our Board of Directors as well as
our Technical Committee. Richard will be replacing another name familiar to
NABA, NBCU’s Glenn Reitmeier in this role.

as their new Chairman. He has brought real leadership to our industry for many years and his skills will be a key factor in implementing ATSC 3.0 in the coming few years. Glenn did a great job

ITU’s 2nd Global Forum on Emergency Telecommunications
Over 500 participants, from 70 countries, recently participated in the ITU’s 2nd
Global Forum on Emergency Telecommunications, with a theme of “Saving
Lives” in Kuwait City, Kuwait (January 26-28, 2016).
Two new global initiatives were launched at this forum:
 The ITU Network of Volunteers for Emergency Telecommunications
 The Global Emergency Fund for Rapid Response.
