Jefferson Area Chamber of Commerce
Welcome to
Jefferson,
Ohio
— Ashtabula County —
E
njoy the historic, main street charm of Jefferson,
Ohio. Jefferson has been the heart of and the
county seat of Ashtabula County since 1807.
Founded in 1803 by Post Master General Gideon Granger,
the village has several historic buildings, including a
beautiful courthouse built in 1836 and the Giddings
Law Office, places where Congressman Joshua Giddings
and Senator Benjamin Wade, leaders in the anti-slavery
movement, once practiced law. Stop for a bite to eat
in one of the many local restaurants or shop the stores
where visitors are always welcome. Take a short drive out
to one of the many local wineries or one of the many
covered bridges in the area. Winter, spring, summer or fall,
there is always something going on in Jefferson. Join us in
August for family fun at the fairgrounds for the Ashtabula
County Fair. Fall brings the harvest of grapes at the local
wineries and the Covered Bridge Festival. Celebrate the
holidays with a Williamsburg Christmas at Jefferson Depot
and the annual Christmas parade.

PLACES OF INTEREST
COVERED BRIDGES
While visiting the historic courthouse in the center of Jefferson,
be sure to stop by the Covered Bridge Festival office. Here you
can find gifts of all kinds and pick up a selfguided driving tour
map of the covered bridges in Ashtabula County. Four of the
18 covered bridges are located just a short drive away from
Jefferson. Stop back the second full weekend in October to
celebrate the fall foliage and the bridges at the annual
Covered Bridge Festival in downtown Jefferson.
Visit www.coveredbridgefestival.org or call 440-576-3769.
JEFFERSON DEPOT
Walk back in time to when the
settlers first came to the Jefferson
area at the Jefferson Depot. The
small, historic village features a
restored train depot, an early general
store, a one-room schoolhouse
and a beautiful church. The village
is open Sundays 1 to 4 pm from
Memorial Day to Labor Day. Join us
in the summertime for the annual
Strawberry Festival.
Visit www.members.tripod.com/
jeffersonhome or call 440-858-2261.
TRINITY CHURCH
Religion has long played a role
in the development of Jefferson.
Churches like Trinity Episcopal
Parrish were some of the first
buildings constructed in this tiny
village. Today, after being home
to a church congregation, and as
a part of the community library,
Trinity serves as home to the
Jefferson Area Historical Society.
GIDDINGS LAW
Folks in Jefferson remember
their heritage, and that
is seen in the museums
and historical markers
around town. From the Civil
War days through today,
Jefferson continues to
influence America.
The Giddings Law Office is
a historical reminder of this.
Here are found the roots of
the abolitionist movement,
the Republican Party,
and more.
OAKDALE CEMETERY
It doesn’t take long to find that the
history of Jefferson continues in its
cemetery. From the earliest days of
the town, families have been burying
those who have gone on before us in
this picturesque setting. The earliest
tombstones and monuments remind
us of our family roots, and offer some
unique views of the culture of the day.
The cemetery is still in use today.
PERAMBULATOR
MUSEUM
Visit the only perambulator
museum in the world. Here you
can find baby carriages of all
shapes and sizes. The museum
also hosts a spectacular collection
of Victorian-era toys and dolls. The
museum is open Wednesdays and
Saturdays June through August
and Saturdays only September
through May. Visit www.
webspawner.com/users/carriage
or call 440-576-9588.
CENTURY HOMES
These landmarks from the
earliest days of Jefferson still line
the streets into town. Many of
these homes date back to the
mid-1800s. Through the years,
the owners may have changed,
but the roots of Jefferson remain
firmly planted in the family.
