Welcome to the Rockhampton HOG Newsletter
In the beginning…
The Rockhampton HOG Chapter was formed on the 28th of January 1995. In 1997, the Chapter
introduced the current format of the Official Ride held on the 1st Sunday of the month and the
Chapter Meeting held on the 3rd Saturday followed by a social night after the meeting . Often
there is an impromptu ride that Sunday.
The Chapter has hosted the QLD State Rally on two previous occasions. Firstly in 1998 and then
again in 2009 with 100's of bikes from all over Australia and New Zealand heading to Rockhampton for the weekend. We also
regularly attend events held by other Chapters. On the local scene, the Chapter gets involved in raising much needed funds for local charities throughout the year
by holding or supporting Poker Runs, Toy Rides, Wild Woman Rides etc.
Since 1995, the Rockhampton Harley Owners Group membership has grown from just 18 at the
1st ever meeting to a peak of over 150 members. Currently we have around 128 active and financial members. It is not uncommon to have 30+ bikes on Official Rides.
In 2009, just prior to holding the State Rally, the Rumble Inn was built at the back of RHD. This is
the venue for the monthly meetings and is also open every Friday evening from 5pm till 10pm for
Chapter members and their guests to come and socialise at the end of the working week. So if
you're interested in joining the Chapter or just passing through, drop in for a cold one with a great
bunch of Rockhampton HOG members.

Hello to all readers, and welcome new members.
It has been a busy time since the last Newsletter.
State of Origin at the Rumble Inn. Won by QLD of course.
HOG’s in The Park on the 11th and 12th of July was very quiet this year, the club just came out in front, patches available
from Deb Foster.
Gladstone Chapter Roll of the Dice for the July monthly ride, a great run once again, over 150 registrations. Trophies
won by myself (Best Bagger) and Brett Allloway (Best overall bike). On the ride home we had our monthly draw at the
Raglan Hotel which was won by Karen Fletcher #290 (not on ride).
The Big screen is up and running in the Rumble Inn, so come along Friday nights and watch the football, whilst enjoying
a BBQ for only $5.00.
Brett O’Donnell past away, his service was held in Bundaberg with a few attending representing the Rockhampton
Chapter.
The meeting was held on sat 15th August and the members voted to move the club ride back to the first Sunday of the
month with an impromptu ride the Sunday after the meeting. Also I believe that the meetings should held monthly
once again. Let me know you thoughts on this change.
On the August monthly ride we went on a beach circuit ending up at the good old Pineys Pub, the monthly draw was
Steve Cowley #205. (not on ride). The monthly draw is now a $600 RHD voucher, remember you must be a financial
member and you must be on the ride to claim the prize.
Don’t forget the State Rally, September 18th to 20th, Brisbane hear we come.
Sat 22 Aug was the Inaugural RHD HOG Appreciation Party, this event will be an annual event held the same time each
year. Both the Highland Chapter and Rockhampton Chapter were in attendance to recognise Gary Dalton for his
achievement of 20 years as Director of The Highlands Chapter. Both Chapters announced the HOG of the year, for the
Highlands it was Porky and for Rockhampton it was Tony Martin.

Bernie asked for a date for Hogs in the Park. To be discussed at a later date. The theme may be changed. This will be discussed at a meeting at a meeting in the New Year. Robert Dwyer thanked the entertainment for the event.
Rick asked if an honour board with photos can be put up. It will be put up above the bar ASAP.

Safety Office Report
Hi All,
Don’t be a Monkey Wrench.
I have a favourite song at the moment called the “Broken down Harley Davidson Blues” by
Canned Heat, and It’s a dig at the old adage that Harley’s were somewhat unreliable. Now I
am pleased to say that this is quite a long way from the truth with any modern motorcycle.
But that’s not to say that break downs don’t happen. Just the other night I was on my way
home from work at 11:30 and about a klm from home, poof, blackness. So, I had an idea
that it would have been either a blown bulb or a fuse. Next day after a bit of a look at the
obvious is was a $2 fuse. No probs swapped it out and all good.
So what about things on your bike? If you had to diagnose a fault on your bike where
would you start? There are some simple things to remember about broken down vehicles,
there are three major areas to look and depending on how you were pulled up, they can
give you a clue where to look,
1. Mechanical Faults
2. Electrical Faults
3. Fuel Supply or other (management systems)
A mechanical fault will usually manifest in the form of a failed or collapsed bearing or a
loose nut and bolt or something physical that has fallen off or gone bang, clunk or crunch.
Sometimes you can easily see the problem.
Electrical faults are inherently more difficult because you can’t see or hear electricity, but it
usually presents in the form of a dead bike that has no lights, no starter motor noise kicking in, and no horn or dash lights.
Fuel supply and fuel management failure used to mean a dodgy carby with dirty fuel blocking a jet or filters. But most commonly now as an empty tank. I will put Lubricants in this
area too, checking oils and fluids like in the brake and clutch.

Safety Office Report cont’d
What to do if you stop on the side of the road with a dead bike? First check the obvious,
engine kill switch is on? Do you have dash lights (battery power), press the starter button,
a dead or low battery will sound like its a real effort to crank the motor or not at all and
just click the starter motor solenoids. And also check your fuses for a blown fuse, Do you
know where they are? Any knocking noises emulating from either the engine or gear box
will most likely be a bad sign and mean a wait for the Harley assist as you aint gonna fix
this easily. Some fuel faults could be caused from bad fuel or water in the system clogging
your filter or, it simply means you’ve run out of fuel, hey it happens,
The short and simple advise I can give you is to check the obvious, and depending on your
ability or mechanical experience you may be able to perform a repair using good old bush
mechanics, at least enough to get you to the next sign of civilisation. If you don’t know or
don’t understand motorcycle mechanics, you may as well get comfortable on the side of
the road and wait for the tow truck, assuming you have phone service.
And If you don’t have any tools at all, then you can’t even try to fix stuff.

GUIDELINES FOR SAFE RIDING ON HOG RIDES
•
There will be a briefing before all rides so arrive at the designated start point half an hour before
departure time.
•
Pay attention to the ride briefing given by the Road Captain. If in doubt - Ask.

If you are experiencing any difficulty that might affect others, let the Road Captain know before
departure.
•
Always fuel up before the start of the ride.
•
Make sure your bike is in roadworthy condition. Check this before you leave home, not 5 minutes before
the ride time. Check all lights, battery, tyres, etc.
•
As a general rule, the group will depart and arrive as a group.
•
Unless arranged prior to departure, do not pass the Road Captain.
•
Use only one lane of a multilane highway. Follow the lead of the Road Captain as to which lane to use.

Ride in a staggered formation except on narrow roads where you should follow in Indian or single file.
When a rider leaves the group (eg. turning off to go home), or changes position in the formation, the
remaining group will switch lanes using indicators to signal intention, and restore the staggered
formation.

When overtaking, maintain your overtaking speed
until those overtaking with you have enough room to
pull in behind without having to break suddenly.
• If you intend to travel at a slower pace than expected
on the ride, position yourself towards the rear of the
group and not in the front or the middle.
• New riders should take up position in front of "Tail
End Charlie" for the first few rides. This is at the rear
of the Pack.
• Keep an eye on the rider behind you. If they stop
unexpectedly, you stop and determine the problem
before proceeding. The rider behind you is your
responsibility. An exception to this rule is "Tail End
Charlie" - there should be no one behind him/her.
