Frederick Chopin
Telling the story of
Frederick Chopin should begin
in ¯elazowa Wola, where the
composer’s French-born father,
Nicolas, worked as a tutor at
countess Ludwika Skarbek’s
manor. At that time her
household was governed by the
count and his wife’s relative
Justyna Krzy¿anowska, whom
Nicolas Chopin married in
1806. The Chopins lived in the
left backhouse of the countess’
manor and that was where
Frederick was born on March

an elder one called Ludwika
and two younger ones: Izabela and Emilia.
In the autumn of 1810 the family moved to Warsaw, where
Nicolas Chopin was employed as a lecturer of French and French
literature in Warsaw Lyceum (Königlich-Preußisches Lyzäum zu
Warschau).
From the earliest years of his life Frederick had a very close
contact with music, which could be heard all around the family’s
house – his mother used to play the piano and sing, whereas his
father accompanied her, playing the flute or violin. Little
Frederick’s extraordinary talent revealed very early. At the age of
six, Chopin started to learn how to play the piano under the guidance
of Wojciech ¯ywny, who very quickly noticed the boy’s outstanding
musical skills. The following year Frederick made his first attempts
as a composer. As a “child prodigy “ he also made performances for
the Warsaw’s aristocracy and at charity events.
In 1822 Frederick Chopin stopped taking lessons from
Wojciech ¯ywny, as the teacher was no longer able to teach his
disciple, owing to the fact that the latter was already more skilful
than the master himself. From then on, Frederick received lessons of
music theory and composition from professor Józef Elsner.
In the autumn of 1826 Chopin started attending the Warsaw
Conservatory from which he graduated in July 1829. After that he
left with a group of friends for Vienna, where he gave several
brilliant performances.
The success of his first visit to Vienna encouraged young
Chopin and his family to organize a tournee on a larger scale. In the
months preceding Chopin’s departure from Poland, he gave many
concerts, mainly in the National Theatre in Warsaw. The composer
left the capital on 2nd November 1830, unaware of the fact that he
was never to return to his homeland.
A few days after Frederick’s arrival in Vienna he received
a message about the outbreak of the November 1830 Uprising.

Despite his desire to come back to
Poland, he stayed in Vienna owing to
his frail health.
In the autumn of 1831 Frederick
left for Paris, where he met many of his
fellow countrymen. He was welcomed
by eminent Polish exiles, took part in
their assemblies and performed at
charity events for poor emigrants. As a

Paris and became a highly esteemed piano teacher amongst Polish
and French aristocracy.
During the composer’s stay in Paris he thought more and more
frequently of starting a family and creating his own home abroad.
Unfortunately, Frederick’s marriage with Maria Wodziñska did not
come to be. Owing to his poor health, he was not considered a proper
candidate by the girl’s parents.
In 1836 Chopin met a famous French novelist, a divorced
mother of two children, Aurora Dudevant (better known by her
pseudonym George Sand). They spent the winter of 1838/39 in
Spanish Mallorca in Valdemossa Monastery in the mountains.
There, owing to bad weather conditions, the symptoms of
pulmonary tuberculosis that Frederick had been suffering from
became more severe. Despite his illness, the composer worked very
intensely. During that period, he created many outstanding
compositions: 24 Preludes Op. 28, F-dur Ballad, Scherzo cis-moll.
After the couple’s return from Mallorca they went to Marseille,
where Chopin received proper medical treatment and care. Then
they visited Genoa and finally settled in Sand’s estate in Nohant in
central France. Until 1846, it was Chopin’s regular holiday resort
and the place of intensive composing activity. For the winter he
used to return to Paris, where he was still greatly appreciated. He
gave piano lessons, took part in artistic life of the city and was
involved in publishing activity. Since his departure from family
home, it was the happiest period of his life, as well as the one most
fruitful artistically. Chopin and George Sand had strong feelings
towards each other. However, in July 1847 their relationship came
to an end.
The departure from the lover as well as grievous personal
experiences connected with Frederick’s father and Jan
Matuszyñski’s (composer’s closest friend) deaths, took a heavy toll
on the artist’s mental and physical health. He hardly composed at
that time, which resulted in the fact that until his death he only wrote
a few miniatures.
In April 1848 Frederick visited England and Scotland. His
intensive lifestyle, countless journeys, numerous concerts and
climate unfavorable for the lungs caused deterioration of the artist’s
health. On the 16th November 1848, despite severe illness and
fever, he gave his last concert for Polish emigrants in London
Guildhall. A few days later he returned to Paris.

On the 17th October 1849, after a long
lasting illness, the composer died in his
apartment at Place Vendome in Paris. He
was buried at Pere-Lachaise cemetery in
Paris. The pianist’s heart, according to his
wish, was taken by his sister in an urn to
Warsaw. There it was sealed within a pillar
of the Holy Cross Church in Krakowskie
Przedmieœcie street, beneath an inscription

from Matthew VI:21: “For where your
treasure is, there will your heart be also”, engraved on
a commemorative plaque. Only after regaining independence,
Warsaw’s citizens placed another plaque with an inscription “Here
rests Frederick Chopin’s heart”.
Nowadays F. Chopin is regarded as the greatest Polish
composer and his ever-living music surprises the listeners with its
outstanding sound. His works refer to Polish musical tradition and
are full of patriotic values.
The distinguished composer’s music is known worldwide.
F. Chopin has been proclaimed abroad to be one of the most
prominent impromptu masters.
His compositions, such as nocturnes, mazurkas or preludes, are
saturated with individual features as well as Polish folklore. They
enchant the listeners with their timbre and innovative harmony.
Pianists and music lovers all over the world have been inspired and
ravished by the tenderness, mysteriousness and dynamics of the
great master’s music for almost 200 years.

Fryderyk Chopin Museum
Fryderyk Chopin Museum in Warsaw is inseparably associated
by his art’s lovers with Ostrogski Castle. The decision to rebuild the
palace (the history of which dates back to the 16th century) from the
World War II damages was taken in 1949, at the 100th anniversary
of Chopin’s death. The shank of that pre-war palace complex, a real
pearl of baroque-classical architecture, was restored on the basis of
the original design made by Tylman from Gameren. In 1953 the
renovated building was opened as Frederick Chopin Society – an
organization continuing the pre-war Chopin traditions. The
museum assembles over 5 thousand inventory items and is the
world’s largest existing collection of Chopiniana. Frederick
Chopin’s autographs, which are in the possession of the museum
(including the collection from National Library) were enrolled on
the UNESCO world’s list of cultural heritage. Since 2005 the
museum as well as its branches – The Chopins’ Drawing Room and
Frederick Chopin’s Birthplace in ¯elazowa Wola - have been run by
Fryderyk Chopin National Institute.
The Chopins’ Drawing Room
The Chopins’ Drawing Room was arranged in the former
Chopins’ dwelling in the left wing of Czapski-Krasiñski Palace. The
Chopins moved there from their flat in the left backhouse of Casimir
Palace (Pa³ac Kazimierzowski) in 1827, after Emily’s (Frederick’s
youngest sister’s) death. In the apartment in 5 Krakowskie
Przedmieœcie street, Frederick lived for the last three years of the
Warsawian period. That is where, in a so called “room upstairs”,
discreetly isolated from the rest of the world, he could find peace
and quiet, indispensable for studying and composing. That is also
where concert and first public presentations of Frederick’s works
took place, after completing his studies with Joseph Elsner in

Frederick Chopin Monument in £azienki Park
The monument by Wac³aw Szymanowski, unveiled in 1926, is
one of the most beautiful and widely known images of the Great
Composer. After its damage
during World War II, the
monument was carefully
reconstructed and situated by a
pond near the main gate of
£azienki Park next to the Aleje
Ujazdowskie. Sunday Chopin
concerts have taken place nearby
the monument since 1959. They
are organized from the beginning
of May to the end of September.

with the composer’s wish, was brought to Poland from
France. After 96 years, having undergone many vicissitudes, the urn
was permanently placed in Holy Cross Church. We can read the
information about it on a commemorative plaque placed on the left
of the nave. Above the plaque with an inscription “On the 17th of
October 1945 Frederick Chopin’s heart returned to Warsaw” there is
a small bust of the composer by Leonardo Marconi.

The Visitants’ Church
When Chopin was a secondary school student he used to
attend Sunday masses in the Visitants’ Church. As a student of
Warsaw Conservatory he would often improvise there on the
organs. He also took part in numerous performances of the school
orchestra and choir as well as soloists.
The Church contains a plaque, situated above the church main
door, near the entrance to the choir, with an inscription saying: “ To
commemorate Frederick Chopin, who played the organs in this
church in the years 1825-1826 as a secondary school student in
Warsaw”. The historical organs are in the church to the present day.

¯elazowa Wola
The central point on the map of sites connected with Fredrick
Chopin - the great composer’s birthplace. It is a village situated near
Sochaczew, 54 kilometres west from Warsaw.

The manor house in Ýelazowa Wola, which once used to belong
to Count Skarbek and his wife, has frequently changed owners
during its several-hundred-year history. Many times it has
undergone rebuilding and restoration processes. An obelisk with
a medallion of Frederick
Chopin was placed in 1894 in
the area of the park surrounding
the manor to commemorate the

¯elazowa Wola. All the actions
aimed at giving a proper rank to
the composer’s birthplace were
effectively held up by the
World War I and the occupant’s
actions. Only in the 1920s the
building in ¯elazowa Wola
gained the status of the
monument of great importance
for the Polish culture. Soon,
thanks to the actions of
Frederick Chopin Society in
Warsaw and Chopin Committee in Sochaczew, it was

its private owner. The renovation and
rebuilding of the manor started in
1930.
Many years’ efforts put into the
manor’s arrangement were obliterated by the World War II. The unique
collection of historical objects, which
had been donated by the local society,
was all but stolen. Finally after the
World War II it was possible to
reconstruct the building and arrange it
in the traditional Polish manor’s style.
The official opening of the manor
took place in 1949, at the 100th
anniversary of the composer’s death.
Since 2005, Frederick Chopin
Institute has been the patron of the
building.

Frederick was born in ¯elazowa
Wola on the 1st of March 1810, but the family did not live there
long. Soon after Frederick’s birth they moved to Warsaw to settle
there permanently.
Despite them having moved out, ¯elazowa Wola was the
Chopins’ frequent place of rest. Numerous memorials assembled in
the manor, such as the 19th-century furniture, decorative fabrics,
engravings and musical instruments, although not belonging to the
Chopin family, perfectly express the atmosphere of those times. In
the area of the park surrounding the manor there are four
monuments of the composer, including the best known one – the
bronze figure of Chopin by Józef Gos³awski. The unique
atmosphere of the manor and its surroundings is complemented by
the beauty of the landscape park, designed and created by professor
Franciszek Krzywda-Polkowski. It fascinates visitors with the
ampleness of three thousand rare plant species and varieties.
At the suggestion of an outstanding Polish pianist and
pedagogue, professor Zbigniew Drzewiecki, Chopin concerts take
place regularly in ¯elazowa Wola. The seasons of summer
performances are opened every year on the first Sunday of May and
they finish on the last Sunday of September. For over 50 years
audiences from all over the word has arrived in ¯elazowa Wola to
admire performances of both polish and foreign artists as well as
laureates of international piano contests. The special atmosphere of
the concerts and the sounds of music coming from the manor,
combined with the charming and mysterious park, attract the
listeners and make them return to ¯elazowa Wola every year with
great relish.

The Town of Sochaczew
Sochaczew is situated in the direct vicinity of Ýelazowa Wola,
some 60 kilometres from Warsaw. Is was there that in 1830 in gen.
Piotr Szembek’s military camp F. Chopin gave one of his last
concerts preceding his departure from the homeland.
The most famous monument of the town are the remains of the
St. Mary of the Rosary’s Church and the Museum of the Sochaczew Region - photo: A. Wierzbicki
Dukes of Masovia Castle, located on the Bzura River. It was there
that the king Casimir Jagiellon made his important decisions
concerning the country. It was also a place of stay of the two Polish
kings: Jan Olbracht and Stefan Batory. The castle was destroyed in
the course of numerous warfare operations, such as the Swedish
Deluge of the 17th century and Koúciuszko Insurrection (at the end
of the 18th century).
Another important monument in Sochaczew is the Town Hall,
built in classicistic style, dating back to the first half of the 19th
century. Situated in the northern part of Plac Koœciuszki
(Koœciuszko Square), it is now the seat of The Museum of The
Sochaczew Region and The Battle of The Bzura River. The
Museum assembles a rich collection of items coming from the times
of World War II. Among the architectural monuments of the town
centre are also the 19th century market halls called “Kramnice”
situated in a characteristic arcade.
The old history traces can also be found in local cemeteries. On
the grounds of Sochaczew St. Lawrence’s Parish necropolis two
tomb chapels survived: one neogothic (from the turn of 19th and
20th centuries) and the other a Byzantine orthodox one (from before

1914). There is a Jewish cemetery nearby – a place devoted to
memory of Sochaczew Jews (the burial place of the famous
Sochaczew saintly rabbi – Abraham Bornstein). The military
cemetery in Trojanów commemorates the heroism of
approximately 3700 soldiers of “Poznañ” and “Pomorze” Armies
who were killed in the Battle of the Bzura River in September 1939.
In Sochaczew we can also find rich architectural monuments,
such as Garbolewski family manor dating from the first half of the
19th century, surrounded by a park - now the seat of the F. Chopin
National School of Music of the first and second degrees. There is
also a long story connected with the manor in Gawùów, built in an
eclectic style in the end of the 19th century (now the seat of a Social
Nursing Home).
Tourists visiting Sochaczew are provided with lots of
attractions by the Narrow–Gauge Railway Museum, with the
largest collection of rail vehicles in Poland as well as in Europe. The
Museum’s greatest attraction are the extremely popular trains,
which run between Sochaczew and the Kampinos Forest in the
summertime.

F. Chopin School of Music
F. Chopin State School of Music of the first and second degrees
has been an important landmark in the cultural map of Sochaczew
for 30 years now. The school is situated in a historical 18th century
manor. It gives education to 320 students under the guidance of 50
teachers. The school cooperates with both Polish and foreign
conservatory professors.
The school’s activities are organizing numerous concerts by
soloists and orchestras – string chamber soloists, brass and
big–band ones as well as by choirs. Numerous performances of the
school’s students constitute a musical setting for many town and
county celebrations.
State School of Music - photo: T. W¹tor
The school organizes contests such as International Chopin
Festival in Masovia, All–Poland Violin “Janko Muzykant”Contest,
Sochaczew Chamber Sessions, All-Poland Spring Flute Festival
and Sochaczew’s Young Cellists’ Sessions.
For some years now, the school has cooperated with
schools of music in Germany, Belgium and Sweden. The school’s
beautiful location in the surroundings of a charming park gave rise
to the idea of open-air concerts, ones extremely popular amongst
music lovers. Both the school’s students and guests invited perform
on the “summer scene” on Sunday afternoons.
The school cultivates the music traditions of F. Chopin its patron. Recitals by young pianists in ¯elazowa Wola organized
during Sochaczew Days in June constitute a permanent part of the
town’s cultural events calendar.
A permanent exhibition devoted to F. Chopin is currently under
preparation.

The Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum
The railway would always inspire emotions and give out a
certain aura of charm. Today’s railways are colourful, fast and
silent, but the real railway’s beauty is the locomotive spewing forth
steam and smoke, the carriages with their wooden benches, the
wheels resounding on the
rails...
Is there such a railway
yet? Where do we look for it?
There is! Right here, in
Sochaczew.

railway train with hundred-years-old carriages and a Krauss
locomotive made 1882 (!), snow ploughs, a fireless locomotive,
railway-converted automobiles or a horse-pulled railway cart.
There are also exhibits which had their share in our country’s
history: the draisine in which Marshall Piùsudski used to have his
rides on the railway tracks through the vast Bia³owie¿a Forest and
the gen. Jaruzelski’s saloon cart. In the halls of the Museum,
numerous mementos of Sochaczew railway and the already gone
narrow-gauge railways are shown.
It is from here, from Sochaczew toWilcze Tu³owskie, that the
antique museum train cruises, pulled by an old 1930 locomotive.
In the summer season from May to October, on given weekdays
the “Puszcza-bis” train is conditionally put in motion, whereas from
June to September the schedule “Puszcza” train goes every
Saturday regardless of the passenger turn-up and weather. The train
carries passengers to the edge of the Kampinos Forest, wherefrom
tour guides take the tourists for a walk along the forest paths. After
the walk, it is possible to have a rest in Osada Puszczañska by the
campfire near the £asica river.
It is well worth taking such a trip to the rhythmic pounding of
the wheels of the antique train, going through the vast Masovia
fields with a speed 15km/h - in no hurry at all. Along the preserved
18-kilometre route, one is able to behold the
beautiful landscape, the picturesque Bzura river,
as well as to smell the smoke and steam of the
locomotive and, finally, to have a rest on the
bosom of the forest nature.

Despite its relatively short existence, the “Our Castle” society can
be proud of several successes, among which there ae:
- inspiring the town authorities to finance two rounds of
achaeological excavations on the castle hill,
- collecting old castle bricks, thanks to which the first ever serious
conservation and restoration works have been conducted on the castle,
- organizing during the annual „Sochaczew Days”– in cooperation
with the Principality of Draconia reenactment society – a historypromoting event, during which it is possible to visit a mediaeval village
and see fighting shows as well as a presentation of the vision of
Sochaczew castle reconstruction. The “Our Castle” society cooperates

Sochaczew Commune
The commune of Sochaczew is situated in the western part of
Mazowieckie voivodship, 55 km from Warsaw and 90 km from
£ódŸ.

The commune’s main tourist attraction, visited by crowds of
travellers from Poland and the whole world, is the ¯elazowa Wola
manor house, where on March 1st 1810 the greatest Polish
composer was born. The Frederick Chopin Birthplace House has
the form of a traditional Polish manor house. It is furnished with
decorative embroidered cloths, furniture, metal engravings and
musical instruments of the composer’s epoch. The park around the
manor house, built by Franciszek Krzywda-Polkowski between
1931 and 1937, enchants with its beauty of over 3 thousand unique
plants species and varieties. The diversity of forms and
compositions used was –
according to the maker’s vision
– to equal the refined forms of
Chopin’s music. The quiet and
picturesque interior of the park
and the sounds of Chopin’s
music resounding from the
manor bring about a most
exquisite aura and climate.
There are four monuments to
the composer on the territory of
the park.
Since 1954, by initiative of
professor Zbigniew Drzewiecki, an outstanding Polish
pianist and pedagogue, Chopin
concerts have been held in

There is an antique alley of trees leading from ¯elazowa Wola to
Sochaczew – one of the many monuments of nature on the territory
of the commune. Apart from it, one can list 7 more manor parks,
most of which were created on the verge of the 19th and 20th
centuries.
The commune has established a partnership cooperation with
Treviso province and Riese Piox commune in Italy. The aim of the
cooperation is cultural exchange and the promotion of ¯elazowa
Wola.
The commune is also a convenient tourist base for trips into the
very attractive neighbouring regions, such as Arkadia and
Nieborów, Niepokalanów, Brochów or the Kampinos National

Tombs to be found on its
territory, as well as natural reserves and walking and cycling routes.
The commune’s most prized monument of history is the the ss. Roch
and John the Baptist parish church – a unique gothic-renaissance
style structure, comprising in itself both the sacral and defensive
character. The basilique often hosts foreign tourists – mostly due to
its connection with Frederic Chopin, as it was here that his parents
were joined in marriage and the composer himself baptised. In the
summer season, there are Chopin music concerts held within the
church, given by famous and outstanding pianists. There are two
roads leading from ¯elazowa Wola to Brochów: via Sochaczew (ca.
10 km) or via the village of Mokas (ca. 8 km). One of the commune’s
attractions is also the narrow-gauge railway. The tourists have long
been very fond of the Sochaczew-Brochów-Wilcze Tu³owskie
antique railway train trips, taking them as far as the borders of the
Kampinos Forest. On the territory of Brochów commune,
monuments of manor architecture of classicist period can also be
found, such as the Manor House of Tu³owice (private property) built
ca. 1800 for Franciszka Lasocka and awarded the Europa Nostra
medal in 1998. Another tourist attraction is located in the village of
Górki – a small ethnographical museum, one telling of the Masovia
countryside and its traditions - commonly known as Cha³upa
Goszcza (the Goszcz Cottage), called so because of its owner and
creator, Henryk Goszcz. In Œladów, Famu³ki £azowskie,
W³adys³awów, Karolinów, Miszory, Kromnów and Piaski
Królewskie there are unique cemeteries, left here by the Olenders –
evangelical faith people from Holland, who lived here for many
centuries.
Since 2002, tourists from all over Poland and Europe have come
to Brochów to witness the greatest open-air military event, one
taking place exactly here – the historical 1939 Battle of Bzura
Reenactment.

Sanniki Commune
The commune of Sanniki, situated 84 km from Warsaw, 90 km
from ÙódŸ and 30 km north-west from Sochaczew, is an active
Chopin centre and the heart of local folklore. The greaest tourist
attraction of Sanniki commune is the Frederick Chopin Park and
Sanniki palace – photo: Sanniki Commune Office archives
Palace Complex . The palace owns its present-day neo-classicist
decor and shape to the architect W³adys³aw Marconi. The Sanniki
adventure with Chopin began in summer 1828. It was here that
young Frederick Chopin spent his holidays at his school-mate
Konstanty Pruszak’s place. There is no doubt that the tradition-rich
Sanniki region inspired and fascinated the young musician with the
melody of native songs and the colours of its rites. On the front wall
of the palace there is a plaque commemorating the stay. Since 1981,
Chopin concerts have been organised in the Palace on every first
Sunday of the month, February to October. Those concerts, together
with poetry, fill the rooms of the palace with an exquisite and unique
atmosphere of romanticism and nostalgia. In the Palace interior,
there is a concert hall and a small museum to commemorate the
great composer. The ones keen on Chopin themes will surely be
interested by the famous Chopin researcher Mateusz Gliñski Music
Library.
The magnet that drags the folklore and folk art lovers to Sanniki
is the annual „Sanniki Sunday” organized on the first Sunday of
June. The main point of the festival is the performance by the
“Sanniki” Song and Dance Ensemble, presenting the regional,
unique costumes and repertoire based on the old folk songs and
dances of the Sanniki region.
In Sanniki it is also worth to
see the 19th century neoclassicist Holy Trinity Church.
One of the oldest places in
the commune, mentioned as
early as 1341, is Osmolin,
which had city rights in 14621869.

I³ów Commune
The commune of I³ów lies 40 km from P³ock and ca. 80 km from
both Warsaw and £ódŸ.
The northern part of the commune adjacent to the Vistula River,
together with the hillocks of Karoliñska, Antoniñska and Rakowiecka
Kêpa as well as with the Zakrzewskie Islands are a protected landscape
area and belong to the protected zone of Gostynin-W³oc³aw Landscape
Park, at the same time being a
frontline of the Kampinos Forest.
There, one can meet nearly-extinct
plants and animal species, such as
White-tailed Eagle, Great Cormorant,
Ringed Plover or Peregrine Falcon.
The commune’s most beautiful
monument of nature is the
pedunculate oak of the Pieczyska
I³owskie village. Uroczysko Rzepki
nature reserve is also worth
mentioning, where – among others – a

nesting place of Black Strork can be
found, as well as Gilówka and Za³usków Range (Uroczysko), where the
eldest trees of the forest can be seen.
The tideland area of Vistula is under special environment protection
and has been included into the NATURA 2000 programme.
In the commune of I³ów, just like in the other corners of Masovia,
we meet the traces of World War II history. The mementos of battles that
used to rage here are the tombs of the cemeteries of I³ów, Brozów and
Gi¿yce.
A monument of architecture well worth seeing is the gothic Ss Peter
and Paul parish church of 1439 in Gi¿yce. The interior of the church is in
the neo-baroque style, and in the gilded altar there is a painting that was
brought here by the Society of Jesus members in the 16th century –
Madonna with Child, also known as the Madonna of Gi¿yce.
Another tourist attraction of Gi¿yce is the brick palace of the 17th
century, rebuilt in 1875. In 1945, a People’s University took up its
residence in the palace, and now it hosts a State Orphanage. The palace
is surrounded by a vast park, established in the 18th and re-composed in
the 19th century.
In Brzozów, there is the St. Andrew Parish Church Complex, built
1852-57 – a brick structure of clearly-visible neo-romanesque and neogothic characteristics. One also ought to mention the I³ów Holy Cross
Exaltation parich church complex, built 1781. The church burned down
in the course of warfare actions of 1915, was rebuilt in the mid-war
period and burned down again in 1969. The consecration of the re-built
temple was held in 1976.

and a European bird refuge.
On the Park’s and commune’s territory, there are numerous tourist
routes and their marking makes it easy to visit the most beautiful corners
of the Kampinos Forest.
The village of Granica – a picturesque forest hamlet, situated ca. 3
km from Kampinos village – is an outstanding starting point for walking
and cycling trips. There is also a Jadwiga & Roman Kobendz Museum
and Didactic Centre of Kampinos National Park here, with a permanent
naturalistic exhibition (visited with a tour guide) and an open-air
museum in which examples of old ‘forest’ architecture have been
collected. Not far from there lays a war cemetery with the tombs of the
soldiers form the 7th Wielkopolska Mounted Riflemen and 14th
Jaz³owieccy Uhlan regiments, fallen in battles of September 1939.
When visiting Kampinos, it is worth visiting the St. Mary
Assumption parish church, erected 1773-1782 to the design of a
Warsaw architect named Lobe. The temple is built of pinewood from
the Kampinos Forest, in the Polish baroque style on a rectangular basis.
Its interor design deserves special atention: there are the main altars
renovated in 2002, and the early 17th-century and much revered
“Mother of God with Child” – the “Lady of Kampinos” painting. Across
the street from the church, there are two impressive oaks – monuments
of nature, given the names of two great Poles – cardinal Stefan
Wyszyñski and Frederick Chopin.
An interesting monument of architecture of Kampinos is also the
classicistic manor house of the second half of the 19th century, now a
private property.
The commune of Kampinos is a very attractive tourist site and base.

On the way to Sochaczew…
While going down the road leading form ¯elazowa Wola to
Sochaczew, in the district of Chodaków one may visit the Repsz
family watermill on the Utrata river, operating in the place since the
16th century. During World War II, the place was – among others – a
headquarters of local Polish Armia
Krajowa (the Home Army) structures.
On the way to the town centre, a
monument well worth seeing is the St.
Mary the Virgin’s Nativity Church in
the district of Trojanów – a one-nave
baroque construction, erected 1783.
Not far from there, a cemetery of
soldiers fallen in the Battle of Bzura is
located. 3693 soldiers of “Pomorze”
and “Poznañ” armies are buried there.

Hisotrical monuments in the town centre
Going down the town’s most ancient street – Farna Street – one may
get to the main market square – Koœciuszki Square. In the northwestern part of the Square, The Museum of The Sochaczew Region
and The Battle of The Bzura River is situated in the former town hall
of the 19th century. In the Museum, a very interesting collection of
World War II militaria is presented, among many other exhibits.
From the Dukes of Masovia Castle Ruins to the Market Halls
From Koœciuszki Square we may head south and enter the
Podzamcze area, where the homesteads at the foot of the castle used
to lie. Upon an elevated hill overlooking the Bzura River, the
remnants of the 14th-century Dukes of Mazovia Castle can be seen.
They are the oldest surviving monument of the town’s history,
giving evidence to the many centuries of its existence.
Not far from there, at the bank of the
river, there is a marina and a canoe
rental. From here, one may take a
canoe ride down the river to
Plecewice, Witkowice and further on,
down to the Vistula River.
At the foot of the Castle Hill, there is
the Band-shell with an amphitheatre.
It is here that on every second
weekend of June the greatest festival
of the town is held – the “Sochaczew

concerts and performances given by
the most renown artists of Poland and
worldwide.

that in 1830 in Sochaczew one of the last
concerts by Frederic Chopin had been held
before the composer left the country.

In the centre of the town, in Warszawska

charcteristic arcaded passageway.
I. Garbolewski Manor house and Park
It is also worth the time to visit the
I. Garbolewski antique manor house and
park. The manor house was built ca. 1800
in a typical fashion of classicistic Polish
manor architecture. At present, the
Frederick Chopin State School of Music
of the 1st and 2nd degrees resides here –
one that has already contributed to the
place’s history with its 30 years of
tradition. In May and June, open-air

The Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum
We finish our sightseeing trip of Sochaczew in the Narrow-Gauge
Railway Museum, not far from the main train station. The Museum
hosts the greatest Polish and European collection of narrow-gauge
railway vehicles. In the summer season, the Museum’s greatest
attraction are the antique train rides to the Kampinos Forest.
Cultural Events
We would also like to encourage you, Ladies and Gentlemen, to visit
Sochaczew during many an interesting event taking place in our

The commune of Brochów, all its territory situated in the protection
zone of the Kampinos National Park, gives many opportunities of
having a rest on the bosom of nature. Cycling and walking routes,
marked and prepared to be used in summer as well as in winter, lead
from Brochów commune into the very heart of the forest.
Expressly for tourists…
1. Narrow-gauge Sochaczew-Tu³owice railway
An especially interesting way of visiting the Commune of Brochów
is the trip by antique museum narrow-gauge railway. The narrowgauge railway used to reach the commune as early as in 1922. By
1923, it already reached deep inside the Forest, up to the village of
Piaski Królewskie, whereas in 1924 – to Wyszogród. The train
carried both passengers and cargo freight. Regular train cruises
ceded on November 30th 1984, but – thanks to the efforts of
railway-lovers – the Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum has been
founded. Within the Museum’s activites, tourist train rides to the
edge of the Forest are organized.
2. The Olender Trail
The Olender Trail - the cemeteries left over the evangelical faith
settlers from Holland - is an offer of active
rest. On the territory of the commune,
seven evangelical cemeteries ae to be
found: the two best-preserved ones in
Œladów and Famu³ki £azowskie, the
remaining ones in W³adys³awów,

Piaski Królewskie. In 2007, the objects were cleared of the
overgrowing bushes, the surviving graves uncovered, the area of the
cemeteries marked. Information and direction boards and signs
have been set up to point the tourists in the right direction and show
the ways from the main routes.
3. Battle of Bzura Reenactment
Every year in the first half of September, the Commune of Brochów
is host and one of the main oganizers to Battle of Bzura
Reenactment. The Reenactment shows the episodes of September
1939 campaign taking place by the banks of Bzura in the vicinity of
Brochów. The event always moves both the participants and the
spectators to strong emotions: as early as some days before the
actual event, historical reenactment group pitch their camps in
Brochów and the battlefield is

main part of the event begins,
involving pyrotechnical effects,

We drive into Sanniki by Warszawska street. About 2 km from the town limits, one may see the
Frederick Chopin Palace and Park Complex. Inside the palace, there
is a concert hall, Chopin memorial museum, and Mateusz Gliñski
Music Library. In the park by the palace we find a F. Chopin
monument, beautiful lime, chestnut and hornbeam alleys and
examples of pyramidal elms. Some of the trees have been

proclaimed monuments of nature. Apart from seeing the park and
palace iself, we advise listening to a music and poetry concert and
visiting the accompanying painting exhibition.
The magnet drawing to Sanniki is the annual „Sanniki Sunday”
event, held every first Sunday of June. Within it, attracions such as
fairs of folk-art, books, sculpture and painting and folk ensemble
concerts are offered.
Vis-a-vis the Palace and Park Complex, there is an antique
neoclassicistic Holy Trinity church.
It is also worth trying the food of the local cuisine in Bolek’s Inn
(Karczma u Bolka), located 100 m from the palace. We recommend
that from the very rich menu, a most tasty dessert be chosen –
Chopin’s Dream (Marzenie Chopina – according to the local
legend, the composer’s favourite one).
The guests are also recommended to meet with the Sanniki region
folklore by visiting the permanent exhibition in the Communal
Culture Club in Sanniki. While visiting Sanniki, one may take part
in numerous events organized by the Centre, such as national
evenings, exhibitions, varnishing-days, meetings with actors and
writers.
Osmolin
Having been acquainted with the attractions of Sanniki, one should
visit one of the oldest commune’s settlements – Osmolin, where the
St. Martin the Bishop parish church with its 19th-century-dated
polychromes stands. It is also worth seeing the memorial of Polish
soldiers murdered during World War II, unveiled 1957. While in
Osmolin, one may also visit the ecological farm producing health
food.
Lwówek
Here, the division of Osmolin
parish church is to be found. It
is a former prayer house, built
in 1857 by the Bohemian
Brethren. In Lwówek, a
number of houses typical for
the Dutch architecture have
been preserved with their
characteristical thatched
roofs. On a small hill nearby

the village, the evangelical
Bohemian Brethren cemetery is situated.
Ecological farms
Tourists interested in ecological agriculture are advised to visit
a number of ecological farms found on the territory of our
Commune. In Staropól and Szkarada villages, it is possible to buy
ecological products and get to know the technology of their
production.

The northern territory of I³ów commune includes the Vistula river

voivodship No. 577 road,
we enter the I³ów commune in the village of Gi¿yce. Here we can
see the oldest church of Sochaczew powiat (district) – the church of
Ss. Peter and Paul. In Gi¿yce, the most interesting non-sacral object
is also to be found – the Park and Palace Complex.
Driving on along the road, we get to Brzozów Stary, where a place of
interest is the St. Andrew church. On the nearby cemetery, there is
the section of September 1939 soldiers; the grave of AK units
soldiers and the tomb of two “Cichociemny” paratroopers.
From Brzozów it is recommended to head towards I³ów, where the
famous I³ów fairs and markets have been held for over 500 years.
Here we can also see the chracteristic antique urban layout of the
marketplace (now turned into a town square) and the beautiful
antique I³ów parish church complex. The local cemetery 17th
century shrine is a very interesting object as well.
I³ów commune has its border on the Vistula, and that is where we are
also headed. In Pieczyska I³owskie, we can see the oldest and the
most impressive tree – a pedunculate oak, comparable with the
famous “Bartek”. The tree, which is the greatest and the most
spectacular monument of nature on the territory of the commune, is
undoubtedly the pride and joy of I³ów and an excellent tourist
attraction. Around the oak, we can behold the beautiful Vistula
valley sights and the picturesque hillocks of Antoniñska, Karoliñska
and Rakowiecka Kêpa. We go further on, towards the Uroczysko
Rzepki range, and next in the direction of Budy I³owskie, where we
can admire the lush vegetation of the land.
It is in these green corners of the land that we say goodbye to the
commune of I³ów and go back – via M³odzieszyn and Chodaków
district of Sochaczew - to ¯elazowa Wola.

Monuments of history
1. Kampinos parish church, built 1773-1782
2. Kampinos National Park Jadwiga & Roman Kobendz Museum and
Didactical Centre in the village of Granica.
3. Ethnographical park (Granica open-air museum).
4. St. Dorothy antique church in Zawady.
5. The remnants of Bromierski and Karnkowski mansion in Zawady.
6. Antique Frederick Chopin Lime Tree Alley in Zawady.
National Memory Places
1. Military Cemetery in Granica..
2. 1863 insurgents tomb at the Kampinos church.
3. Classicistic mansion of the second half of the 19th century, built
for Adam Broniec (private property). During the Insurrection of
January 1863, Zygmunt Padlewski insurgency headquarters stationed
here.
Wildlife
The commune of Kampinos is but a part of a vast macroregion of central
Poland lowlands, called „the land of great lowlands”, and the Kampinos
National Park is one of the most important nature refuges of Poland. The
Park is of an unstabilized character and is subject to dynamic
development, conditioned mainly by climatic environment and soil
structure.
The pride of Kampinos National Park is a
small shrub called Leather Leaf (Chamaedaphne calyculata) – a relic of the Ice Age.
When venturing through the park, one may
also ancounter a number of trees – Nature
Monuments (the status has been awardad to
about 1015 examples), and among other rare
species one should list Prunus Acida, Betula
Obscura (Black Birch) and Linnaea Borealis
(Twinflower)

Granica
The trip from ¯elazowa Wola to Kampinos is best started at the

here, have a ride in a horse chaise, or a sledging cavalcade in winter.
It is also worth visiting the Jadwiga & Roman Kobendz Museum
and Didactic Centre with its permanent naturalistic exhibition. One
should see the open-air exhibition in front of the Museum, devoted
to Polish national parks and the open-air museum – example of the
old “forest’ architecture. Then, there is a walk along the Third
Millennium Alley where, since 1999, the highest state officials have
planted young oaks, and one must not forget to honour the fallen
soldiers of the 7th Wielkopolska Mounted Riflemen and 14th
Jaz³owieccy Uhlan regiments, fallen in September 1939 and buried
on the local military cemetery.
Kampinos
From Granica we head towards Kampinos, where St. Mary the
Virgin Assumption church, built 1773-1782, is located. It is in this
antique church that one can see the much-revered “Mother of God
with Child” – the “Lady of Kampinos” painting. Across the street
from the church, there are two impressive oaks – monuments of
nature, given the names of two great Poles – cardinal Stefan
Wyszyñski and Frederick Chopin.
Zawady
Straight from Kampinos we may go to the village of Zawady, where
a neo-gothic church, erected 1889-1905, is found. In one of the four
altars of the church, we can see the copy of the Czêstochowa
Madonna painting - made on Cordovan (a special kind of leather)
most probably in the 18th century.
£azy
From Zawady to £azy – a village by the so-called King’s Trail
(Trakt Królewski) between Kampinos and ¯elazowa Wola – there
goes the Frederick Chopin Lime Tree Alley. In £azy there are the
remains of Bromierski and Karnkowski mansion from the second
half of the 18th century. East from £azy, there is an exceptional
Masenka range with its small pond surrounded by pinewood.
Picturesque landscape and clean air attract people to visit Kampinos
Commune at any time of the year. Natural assets are joined here with
numerous tourist
attractions.

can take a cruise down the Vistula from Suchodó³ to Nowy Secymin
Suchodó³ Vistula marina – how to get there
First reach the village of I³ów. Next follow the No. 575 road to
P³ock. Some 200 m behind I³ów turn right onto Suchodó³ (on the
crossroads there is a “Suchodó³ 7 km” sign). Before Suchodó³ turn
right towards the Vistula River (on the crossroads you will see a “Do
przystani wodnej” – “To the marina” sign).
Sochaczew - Suchodó³ canoeing route
The canoeing ride begins in Sochaczew, on a marina next to the
castle ruins. Going down the river, one may get to Plecwice marina
(it is possible to organize a camping there). Further down the river,
on the right one can see the 16th-century Ss. Roch and John the
Baptist parish church of Brochów – the baptism place of F. Chopin.
The church is a Europe-wide unique construction, comprising in
itself the defensive and the sacral functions. Bzura flows into
Vistula in the vicinity of Kamion village. Having passed the bridge
of Wyszogród, one should continue the canoe ride down the Vistula
river. The trail is marked either by buoys or poles – looking
downstream, the green buoys/poles are on the left-hand side of the
trail, the red ones on the right. Alongside the river there are also
information signs, giving the information about the current
kilometre of the water trail we are on. In order to get to Suchodó³
marina, having passed sign
599 one should yaw left off
the trail (going round the
island on its left-hand side)
and then take the second
channel left. Going straight
on down the channel, one
gets to an embankment. At
the bank turn right and go
downstream for about 200 m
, to the marina itself.

Suchodó³ – Nowy Secymin motorboat route
One may launch a motorboat yacht at the Suchodó³ marina. To
begin the cruise, one needs to go round the hillock of Kêpa
Antoniñska near the marina and head for the water trail buoys.
Please note that Kêpa Antoniñska is a bird nesting place nature
reserve – while approaching and passing the place, it is forbidden to
disturb the quiet or cause waves. Having reached the water trail
599th kilometre sign, one should head upstream. 10 km further, on
the left, one can admire the high river bank of Wyszogród. It is worth
visiting the antique church and the Franciscan monastery there.
From Wyszogród, we go upstream to Czerwiñsk nad Wis³¹ (“upon
Vistula”). The town is overlooked by one of Poland’s most precious
monuments of architecture – the Czerwiñsk Abbey romanesque
complex. The cruise can be finished on the right-bank bridgehead in
