EUROPEAN ART & OLD MASTERS 14 JUNE 2016 LOT 175 EDWARD CUCUEL (german/american 1879-1954) "EAST WIND" Signed 'Cucuel' bottom right; also signed and inscribed with title on stretcher verso, oil on canvas 27 3/4 x 20 in. (70.5 x 50.8cm) provenance: Freeman's, sale of December 8, 2002, lot 66. Freeman's, sale of June 27, 2004, lot 112. Acquired from the above. Private Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. note: Edward Cucuel studied under the Orientalist painter Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904). A member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and exhibitor with the Salon d'Automne, Cucuel worked in a generally impressionist style and concentrated on figural subject matter, along with landscapes. He is best known for his oils of elegant women rendered with rich impasto and vibrant, highly-keyed colors in sun dappled settings or interiors.
