The Northumberland Humane Society (NHS) is a charitable community
resource that is dedicated to protecting and providing temporary shelter to all
animals in need while promoting adoption and rehoming for abused,
abandoned, neglected, and unwanted companion animals.
The NHS has been serving the local community for nearly 50 years, and
remains the only registered charitable animal shelter in Northumberland
County. The NHS does not receive funding and relies on donations and fundraising
events to support our important work in the community. This year, we are once again
hosting our Animals R Us Festival to raise much needed funds to support the
animals in our care.
The Animals R Us Festival is on Saturday, July 23rd, 2016 and will be held at
Victoria Park in Cobourg. This fun-filled event draws in thousands of attendees who
share a common love of animals. The Animals R Us Festival is the perfect
opportunity for local businesses to engage the community while also demonstrating
their support of animal welfare in Northumberland County.

What we do
Cruelty Investigations The Northumberland Humane Society is
legally responsible for all animal cruelty investigations in Northumberland
County, and is the only organization in our community with the right to enforce
animal cruelty laws. Sadly, on average over 300 animal cruelty complaints are
received each year in our area.
Sheltering & Adoptions The NHS provides a temporary home to
hundreds of animals each year as they pass through on their way to new
homes. Everything from mice, rabbits, cats, dogs and even farm animals have
spent time at the shelter while awaiting adoption. Some are abandoned by their
owners and are in desperate need of care when they arrive at the shelter.
Others are surrendered by owners who are sadly no longer able to provide care
to their beloved pets.
Humane Education Promoting responsible pet ownership is an
important part of the Northumberland Humane Society. Every year, the NHS
visits schools, libraries and service groups to discuss topics such as nutrition,
exercise, training methods and the importance of spaying and neutering pets.
Emergency Boarding Program Whether it be a medical emergency
or a situation of domestic violence, the Northumberland Humane Society offers
temporary pet boarding for owners who are in need of assistance. The NHS will
keep pets safe until a permanent solution can be found.
What is
Animals R Us?
The Animals R Us Festival is a pet expo geared towards families and pet lovers
of all kinds! This annual festival takes place at Victoria Park in Cobourg, ON and
is the largest pet festival of its kind in Northumberland County. The Animals R Us
Festival is a fundraising event and all proceeds go to the homeless animals at
the Northumberland Humane Society.
The goal of the Animals R Us Festival is to celebrate the animals in our lives!
This is achieved by inviting rescues and exhibitors with pet products and
services, to promote adoption and help educate the public on responsible pet
ownership, all while providing a fun and interactive experience. Demonstrations
will provide insight into obedience, exercise, diet and other aspects of pet
ownership that have been known to enhance the pet’s overall well-being while
continuing to strengthen the bond between pet and pet owner.
