It operated under this title until 1963, when a new community college district was drawn that included both San Benito and southern Santa Clara Counties. Successful passage of a local bond in 1966 provided the needed funds to construct the present campus at Santa Teresa Boulevard in Gilroy. In 1997, instuctional sites were added in Hollister and Morgan Hill to augment offerings on the main campus. With the passage of the Measure E Facilities Bond in 2004, Gavilan College prepared to meet the facilities needs of the future. Since then, the main campus has had an upgrade in technology (bringing in on-line registration and classes) and infrastructure (air conditioning, exterior lighting, plumbing, parking and landscaping improvements.) The science buildings were renovated to make better use of classroom space, and in the fall the newly renovated Art and Humanities buildings will reopen. There will even be a new music recording studio! In 2008, land purchases were completed for the creation of future campuses in Coyote Valley and San Benito County. Over the coming years, the community will be invited to participate in the design and program selection for these new campuses. GAVILAN COLLEGE GavFEST 2009 FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 2009 11 An Open Letter from Steve Kinsella It is an honor to be at Gavilan College at this time. As we celebrate our 90th year in existence, changes are underway to expand college services in our local communities in the years to come. With last year’s purchases of two parcels of land, one in Coyote Valley and one in San Benito County, Gavilan will grow into a three-campus district Steve Kinsella over the coming decades. In the meanSuperintendent/President while we will seek to expand our offerings and facilities in Morgan Hill and Hollister, to serve the record numbers of students now enrolling at Gavilan College. As a state-funded agency, Gavilan College has certainly been cognizant of the current tough economic times. Fortunately, the budget compromise reached by the legislature and governor recognizes the important contributions Community Colleges make in helping California’s economy grow. Community College enrollment levels are up across the state, as unemployed workers return to college for education and retraining, and university-bound students save money by completing their lower-division coursework at community colleges. At Gavilan College, Spring enrollment is up 17%, vs. 9.5% statewide, continuing a three-year trend of double-digit enrollment growth. Although there are cuts in the state budget, (such as eliminating the 0.68 % COLA for the current year) Gavilan College remains in a strong financial position, thanks to prudent and conservative budgeting and the participation of staff, students and faculty in an Expenditure Reduction Task Force. Through the work of the Task Force, over $860,000 in budget reductions have been identified and accepted for the current year, and additional reductions have been identified for 2009-10. No staff will be laid off, and students will not be turned away to BOARD OF TRUSTEES Deb Smith, President Laura Perry, Esq. Kent Child, Vice President Tom Breen, Esq. Mike Davenport Mark Dover Elvira Robinson, Esq. Jovana McGraw,Student Trustee achieve these reductions. We continue to implement Measure E – completing the purchase of land for two future campuses in Coyote Valley and San Benito County. Renovations on four main campus buildings will be completed this year. To accommodate all of the additional students seeking higher education, we are adding more portable structures and seeking additional space to rent throughout the district. We are proud to be your College of Choice. 12 FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 2009 GAVILAN COLLEGE GavFEST 2009 GavFEST 2009 Schedule of Events EVENT WHEN WHERE Open House All Day Sycamore Lane Campus Tours, Orientation, Admissions & Records, Financial Aid, TRIO, Disability Resource Center, Transfer Center, Health Services, Puente, Morgan Hill Battle of the HS Bands Main Stage Hosted by KDON Live Oak (Sleepwell) 11:00am Central HS 11:40am Ann Sobrato HS 12:20pm San Benito HS 1:00pm Gilroy HS 1:40pm Gavilan College Ensemble 2:00pm AWARDS 2:45pm GaviLAND Kids Activities 11am-3pm Main Quad Bounce House, Reptile Petting Zoo, Climbing Wall, Science Academy Ecology Adventure All Day Pond CDC Children’s Activities All Day CDC Performing Arts Showcase STAR Stage Watsonville Taiko Drummers 11:00am Sledge Grits Band 12:00pm Folklorico Dancers 12:30pm Hip Hop Craze 1:00pm STAR Karaoke 2:00pm EVENT WHEN WHERE Gavilan Theater Presents Neil Simon’s “Fools” 12:00-1:00pm “Godspell” Matinee 2:00pm Food Court All Day Information All Day Cosmetology Demos Hairstyling, Nail Art, Manicures, Braiding Student Showcase All Day MESA Research Projects Art Exhibit Student Writing Distance Education Read Posters, Cards Ecology Projects Ceramics Sale GavCAFE and Gavilan College Bookstore Resource Fair United Way, PG&E, GECA, Alumni and More Theater Main Quad Gazebo Cosmetology Main Quad Library Humanities Library Quad Library Student Center Sycamore Lane Student Center Sycamore Lane Schedule subject to change.
