Fréjus , France
Fréjus is located half way between Cannes and Saint-Tropez and
boasts a rich artistic and architectural heritage with its 5th century
cathedral and its amphitheatre. It is the ideal place to start exploring what Provence has to offer and to enjoy its many festivals.
Fréjus contains a medieval city as well as a popular seaside resort.
Created by the Romans, Fréjus attracts many tourists because of
its history, cultural and artistic qualities, its well maintained
beaches, the sea and sporting facilities.
There are numerous places of interest in the area, all are reasonably accessible from Fréjus because of its convenient location. The history of Fréjus is very
similar to that of Provence. It has been destroyed many
times in spite of the presence of the Roman Legions. In
49 B.C., Julius Caesar decided to have the Adrian Way
built to link Italy through to Spain. In those days the
Phoceans of Marseille had already set up a colony on the
site, but it was the Roman emperor who gave the port its
prosperity and the city its name of 'Forum Julii' meaning
'market of Julius;' he also named its port 'Claustra
Maris' (The sea bolt).

It went on to become one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean,
until the Pax Romana, by denying Forum Julii its military activity, marked the
beginning of its decline. The decay of Rome led to that of the cities of its empire.
Between the 7th and the 9th centuries, Muslim invaders repeatedly raided the
city. The sea encroached on the land while invasions by the Muslims and pirates left the monuments in ruin. By the 10th century there was very little left
of the colony, mostly rubble. Sea-borne silt clogged up the port and led to the
formation of a huge swampy plain, which then separated the village from the

Near Fréjus is Saint Raphael, surely one of the oldest resorts on the coast.
There is evidence that wealthy Romans used to pass their summers here 2000
years ago! There are also traces of both prehistoric and ancient Greek occupation - visit the archaeology museum in the town to learn more. In more recent
years it was Napoleon who brought Saint-Raphael to the public gaze when he
landed here after his Egypt 'adventure' - and set off from Saint-Raphael when
first sent into exile.

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is a village in the Alpes-Maritimes area in southeastern
France. One of the oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera, it is well
known for its modern and contemporary art museums and galleries such as
Fondation Maeght which is located nearby.

Gorges Du Verdon is a river canyon considered one of
Europe’s most beautiful. It was formed by the Verdon
River which is named after its turquoise coloring. This
will be not only an amazing site but a delight to paint.
Cassis is famous for its cliffs and sheltered inlets along
the Mediterranean Coast. Its charm and beauty will give
us wonderful painting subjects to choose from.

Nice. Its narrow streets and dramatic history will be an exciting
visit and opportunity to paint
Gorges Du Verdon studies of rugged architecture.
Visiting a Local Winery will be a wonderful experience not only for capturing in watercolor but sampling the varietals in the region.

This amazing two week Plein Air Workshop provides you with an experience
you will be talking about for years. Included in this workshop is:
14 nights of lodging which includes breakfast.
Welcome Reception Sunday Afternoon.
Four-three course dinners as a group affair (alcohol not included).
Five bus trips for Plein Air Workshops, shopping and visiting a local winery.
(All fees included, lunches not included).
Workshop by Eric Wiegardt on Plein Air Bus Field Trips and Fréjus and Saint
Raphael.
 Staff assistance throughout workshop.
Because our hotel is situated in Old Frejus, restaurants and shops are just a
short walk away. There will be free time to explore as you wish. We will provide you with information on public transportation, rental car agencies and
much more to aid in exploration of the surrounding areas available to you.

becomes available.

Deposit and Full Payment Information
To reserve this workshop, a $500.00 per person deposit with the
*Registration Form and *Responsibility Clause guarantees your attendance. Deposits must arrive by March 1st 2014. Each person attending is required to fill out both *documents, sign them and return with
their deposit. If you wish, you may call our Gallery (open 4 days a week
from Nov.-June from 11am-4pm PST) and give us your credit card number
for your deposit and then scan and email within 3 days the completed
Registration and Responsibility Clause forms to us at
ericworkshops@centurytel.net or fax us the forms and credit card number to a secured fax line: 360-665-3772.


your registration and deposit. There is a great deal of interest so once the
openings are filled, your name will be placed on a waiting list in case of
cancellation by another individual. Availability is on a first come first
serve basis. If there is a cancellation of an individual, you will be contacted. A deposit and both documents will be required at that time to reserve you spot.


Cancellation Policy
If cancellation is requested between the dates of March 1st, 2014 and May
1st, 2014, all monies will be returned to the applicant minus an administration fee of $300.00.

If after May 1st, 2014 a cancellation is requested, required in writing, no
monies will be returned to applicant unless that individual’s space can be
resold. If the space is resold, all monies will be returned minus an administration fee of $300.

No refund will be given to an applicant who does not participate or complete the workshop or the field activities.

Eric Wiegardt’s Plein Air Workshop reserves the right to cancel the workshop for any reason necessary. All deposits and /or full payments for the
workshop will be reimbursed to the participants immediately upon an announced cancellation.
Note: After a full payment has been received, if there is a substantial increase
over 5% to the conversion tables that govern the Euro dollar (or any monetary
standard) to the U.S. dollar, the applicant will be notified and charged the increase accordingly before departure for Europe.
Travel Information
What Airport? The closest airport to Frejus is the Nice Airport. It is approximately one hour to the hotel.
Is there a Train near by? The train station is right across the street from the
hotel.
How do we get to the hotel upon arrival? Saturday, September 20th is the
arrival date. There is a bus coming to Frejus several times a day from the airport. The bus schedule will be posted on the Lock and Key Website. We
will provide a van at the Town Square where the bus stops to take you to the
hotel. We will need your flight arrival time so we may coordinate with the bus
schedule to pick you up.
How do I get back to the airport? We will have a bus at the hotel on October
4th, arriving at 8:30am for boarding. It is scheduled to leave at 9:00am
to take you to the airport. Please make note of this time and date so you may
plan your flight early afternoon if you are flying on the 4th. It is a one
hour drive to the airport so please allow 3 hours timeframe to assure you
don’t miss your flight.
Other Information
What should I bring? A Materials List will be posted on the Lock and Key
Website for your painting materials.
How shall I dress? Dress for painting and for dinner outings.
What is the weather like? September runs between 7o and 82 Fahrenheit
Is there a lot of walking? Several of the places we will be going, will entail
some walking and some of it is uphill. Eze, Gorge Du Verdon, and SaintPaul-de-Vence will have hills. If you don’t think you can climb or walk any
distance, please let us know.

Wiegardt Studio Gallery (WSG) employees, Eric and Ann Wiegardt, affiliates-Gail Baer and CommunicaDe Consulting, LLC (CDC, LLC), successors, or assigns are not liable for any negligent or
willful act or failure to act, of any person, third party or entity which is to, or provides goods or services including but not limited to: transportation companies, equipment suppliers, food service
providers of any kind, etc.
I acknowledge that I am voluntarily participating in this trip with the knowledge of the inherent
risks and dangers involved including but not limited to: negligence on the part of WSG, its employees, Eric and Ann Wiegardt, Gail Baer, CDC,LLC, physical exertion, forces of nature, transportation failures, consumption of alcohol, risks with food or impure water, civil unrest, terrorism,
criminal activity, wild or other animals, failure of equipment, accident or illness without means of

Eric Wiegardt, a native of Washington State, grew up near the small
town of Oysterville. Following a degree in Civil Engineering from the
University of Washington, he graduated from the famed American
Academy of Art in Chicago where he studied under his mentor, Irving
Shapiro. He returned to his home town in 1985 to open Wiegardt Studio Gallery in the Victorian home built by his oyster pioneering great
grandfather. Since then he has left an indelible mark on the art world.
Eric is a member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Allied Artists of America, Watercolor West, Northwest Watercolor Society, and the Transparent Watercolor Society of
America. His work has exhibited at the Frye Museum, Salmagundi
Club, Knickerbocker Artists, National Arts Club, Butler Institute of
American Art, and others.
His instructional DVD’s have inspired artists around the globe. Featured in many books on watercolor, Wiegardt has served as a judge as
well as lectured and taught in the United States and Europe.
