President Message continued
Five board directors were elected to
2-year terms. New are Bea Rodh, and Ginny
Brush. Re- elected are Dennis Davey, John
Godbolt and Herb Herriman. On behalf of
LMCOA, I wholeheartedly and sincerely
thank Bill Shafer and Bill Ryan for all their
support and hard work over the past years
on the board. Believe me, they may be off
the board, but far from inactive. Thank you!
Last summer we received many
compliments on our newsletter. It does take
a team effort working together, for sure.
But, specifically I want to thank Caroline
Bledsoe for organizing and keeping all the
articles on track. Also, at the last minute
Ginny Brush stepped up to the plate and
applied her artistic skills and expertise to
generate the final product. I think I still owe
her a fishing excursion. Well done ladies,
we are indebted and grateful!
Last summer, with the retirement of
Doug Olsen who delivered propane to
customers on the lake, it was necessary to
secure alternative options. Dennis Davey
came forward and organized propane
deliveries to the docks at the Landing.
Cottage owners came to the docks, picked
up and loaded their ordered 1, 2 or 3 tanks
on pontoon boats to take back to their
cottages. What could have been chaos
turned out to be almost a party atmosphere.
A lot of friends who we often do not see
frequently enough, came to the docks on
the scheduled date and time to receive their
ordered tanks. The high fives, hugs and
handshakes were plentiful. Hey, let’s do it
again, LOL. Dennis, thank you for being
there when needed. You were terrific!
Caroline Bledsoe, who will be going off
the board this year because of term limits
(three 2-year consecutive terms), has been
an inspiration and devout member of the
association for many more than the six
years she served as a director. She deserves
our utmost appreciation and gratitude for
everything she has succeeded in doing
and accomplished above and beyond her
minimum responsibilities. Caroline is still
working on unfinished projects that she
initiated. Please do not shed tears, but do
give her a hug, smile and a big thank you
when you see her this summer. Caroline
will be neither out of sight nor out of mind!
One more item that will be helpful for
us to communicate with you is having your
e-mail address on file. This year we started
using MailChimp, which is a software
program to send mass e-mails. With
MailChimp, we can communicate with you
directly, expeditiously and inexpensively
(no cost). But, we need your e-mail
address. Please clearly provide your e-mail
address on the Dues Notice form that you
received or is available on our website www.
matinenda.ca. Currently, our website is
undergoing reconstruction that is being
improved with a new look and organization
by Webmaster Jeffrey Rice. Gracious, Jeff!
The Lake Matinenda Cottage Owners
Association has the continued purpose to:
encourage fellowship, conserve the lake’s
natural beauty and water quality, support
water safety and cooperate with public
agencies to improve lake facilities.
See ya on the lake!

Ginny Brush
Camp 7, CB handle = “Toss ‘em Back”
Ginny Brush’s introduction to Lake
Matinenda was in 2002 when she and Mari
Bartoli flew in on a Bush plane to visit a
good friend at Teacher’s Bay. They fell in
love with the Lake and purchased a cottage
at Camp 7 in 2003.
Ginny grew up on in Central California
on a ranch and has always been a fan of
the outdoors, nature and fishing. She has
lived in Santa Barbara since 1966 working
as an Arts Teacher, then as a design and
marketing professional. In fall of 2015 she
retired from the County of Santa Barbara
where she served as an Arts Administrator
and advocate for 15 years with a goal to
spend more time traveling and at the Lake.
Bea Rodh
McDonald’s Bay
At the end of
2014 Bea and her
family set out on a
new adventure by
moving to Blind
River, ultimately to
be closer to family,
friends and their
cottage on Lake Matinenda. Born and
raised in the Northwest Territories Bea was
ecstatic to trade -45°C for a balmy -15°C,
not surprisingly the transition has been
seamless.
Never one to let the sand settle between
her toes there is always a project to be
completed or a craft night to be had.
The new-found ‘love of drift wood’ has
changed the game… Bea is becoming
dangerously crafty!
LAKE Matinenda’s First Annual
Boat Parade Launched
T
By Bill Shafer
he first annual Lake Matinenda boat parade and picnic was a success although
it would have been better with more participants. The parade began at the landing
with two boats representing Sullivan Bay and Camp 7 Bay. Others joined in at
Teachers Bay and Butterfield Narrows. All the boats were decorated and many boaters
were in costumes. The end of the parade and the site of the BYOF picnic was Bare Bum
Beach. The weather was great and I believe everyone enjoyed themselves. Maybe in 2016 we
can add some musical talent to the party. We even did a little clean-up project at BBB.
It seems the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) pay attention to “party notices” posted at
the landing. I am sure they expected a bunch of drunken teenagers instead of the “older”
group they found. There were numerous safety inspections and a word to the wise, when
alcohol is consumed at the party, be sure you have a
designated driver and make sure there are no open
containers aboard while under way.
Join us this year. Watch for notices at the landing
and announcements on the CB net.

2015 Lake Matinenda Kids Bass Fishing Derby
he ‘Hooked on Fishing’ 2015
Lake Matinenda Kids Bass Fishing
Derby was held on August 1, 2015.
We had a huge turn out, a total of
47 young fisher persons registered for the
tournament. The ‘biggest’ bass winner was Cody
Spratt (age: 7) with a 3.4 lb. bass. The top
prize consisted of a Sight Seeing Flight
certificate for 1-5 passengers donated by
Lauzon Aviation, and a top of the line
fishing rod donated by NAPA.
The ‘smallest’ bass winner was Logan
Schlueter (age: 9) with a 4.38 inch bass. Each child that registered received a
grab bag and a prize. Also included in the
day’s event was face and rock painting, a
gold fish guessing game, minnow races and
a family BBQ. The event went off without a hitch and
the feed back from participants and parents
was exceptional.
Our friends/volunteers went above
and beyond to ensure the event was a
great success.
Many thanks to the following
volunteers who made this event such a
success Sheri & Pete Rancourt, Stacey

Elders Tea at the Mississauga First Nations
O
By Bea Rodh
n February 24th, 2016 Bea Rodh
attended the Elders Tea representing
the LMCOA, which was hosted by
Alesia Boyer at the Mississauga Red
Pine Lodge on the Mississauga reserve.
The first topic discussed was how the
LMCOA and Mississauga First Nations
(MFN) could work together as liaisons
on issues regarding environmental and
protection issues. The Mississauga First
Nations has been approached by another
Smallest Fish Winner, Logan
Schlueter
group with regards to the same and have
acknowledged a positive interest.
Preserving and protecting waterways was
the main focus and the following were some
of the key ideas and issues discussed:
Lake Hopping: Educating boat operators
on lake hopping was a concern. Possible lake
contaminations can result when boats are
moved from lake to lake and the bottom of
the boats are not washed off.
Fish consumption: An almost impossible
task is reporting the type, size and numbers
of fish taken out of the surrounding lakes.
Rock formation and geological surveys:
are of interest, including the cliffs on Lake
Matinenda.
Elders (Day Trip) Boat Tour of Lake
Matinenda: Scheduled for the last week
in July, the MFN elders look forward to
this annual tour. Unfortunately they are
limited to space and time. Possibly another
pontoon can be rented in order to allow
for all interested elders to go and to go
longer distances. They have yet to tour the
entire lake.
We look forward to the next step in this
liaison partnership.

By John Godbolt, Treasurer
March 2016
2015 financially was a good year. Our paid
membership dropped from 125 in 2014 to 94 in
2015 which is disappointing. Donations were
up, however it should be noted that the bulk of
the donations offset all of the cost of the bass
tournament held last summer.
Additional revenue was generated at the AGM
mainly from sales of cookbooks. The net result of
these items is a surplus this year of $311.38.

New on the Board last year are
Ginny Brush (American), Bea Rodh

Herb Herriman (American), Dennis

John Grabowski and Caroline Bledsoe

Caroline, sadly is termed out.
We need at least two Canadians
on the slate this year. We are always
looking for candidates who may have
other skills which the Association can

A Bit of Blind River and Lake Matinenda History
I
N THE EARLY DECADES OF THE 20TH
CENTURY, the Old Steel, a product of the
Blind River Transportation Company
(BRTC) was a narrow gauge railroad
built from Blind River to Lake Matinenda
connecting water transportation by steam
tugs, scows (flat-bottomed boats) and
alligators which brought men and supplies
into the bush camps. The 10 kilometre rail
trip took logger’s equipment and supplies
from Lake Duborne to Lake Matinenda.
Logs were dumped into Lake Duborne and
sent down the Blind River to the mills at
Blind River on Lake Huron (site of today’s
Marina) and the mill that was located on the
site of today’s Old Mill Motel on Hwy. 17.
John R. Stover, President of the BRTC also
held the position of Woods Manager and
later General Manager for Eddy Brothers
Company, the operating firm for the Mill.

Update on Propane Delivery to Lake Matinenda
M
By Dennis Davey
cDougall Fuels Corporation, from
its location in Blind River, is once again
willing to deliver propane to the landing
at Lake Matinenda. The price for a
100-pound tank of propane is $90.40, unchanged
from a year ago.
- Cash is the preferred method of payment.
Checks on a local bank might be OK, but must
be approved in advance. But, no Credit Cards.
- The manager in charge of setting up the
propane delivery is Joe (“J I”) Iturregui. His cell

phone number is 705 849-8624. Joe’s e-mail
address is joeiturregui@mcdougallcorp.com.
- Joe requires a minimum of 15 tanks on the
truck, to justify delivery to the landing at no
charge. The truck can handle a maximum of
20 tanks.
Be aware that transporting full 100-pound
propane tanks IN A HORIZONTAL POSITION,
in a car or truck, is a violation of Ontario law, and
is punishable by a stiff fine. Empty tanks can be
transported in a horizontal position.
Joe at McDougall Fuels suggests that LMCOA
pick a date and a time for the
delivery, and he will see that it
happens. Dennis recommends
that we pull together a list
of those needing propane,
in advance of ordering the
delivery. Perhaps we can find
a volunteer who can manage
this effort in the short term.

service please stay tuned for

Lake Matinenda Water Levels UpdatE
T
By Ray Lipinski
here were two factors that
had a significant effect on water
levels in the Blind River system
during 2015. During the summer
we experienced the lowest levels we have
on record, due to a significant drought.
All area lakes had very low water levels
as a result. In mid-December we received
a very large rainfall, in excess of 100
mm, which created high levels and flows
that persisted much of the winter. This
rain had an increased effect due to the
saturated and frozen ground conditions.
Several smaller precipitation events in
the late fall had already replenished most
of the lake levels in the area, following
the summer drought.

Town of Blind River and LMCOA Lake Matinenda Landing Working Committee Update
he LMCOA in partnership with
the Town of Blind River is in
the process of forming a Working
Committee to deal with the
concerns and sustainability of the Lake
Matinenda Landing.
The Committee consists of Ms. Katie
Scott-Town Clerk Administrator, Scott
Smith-Manager of Recreation & Parks,
myself-Ronda Makela-LMCOA Board
Appointed Liaison. We will also be
approaching Councillor Ken Kennedy and
Mayor Sue Jensen.
As a new season is upon us so are several
concerns of both the Town of Blind River
and the LMCOA. I recently met with Ms.
Katie Scott-Town Clerk Administrator to
discuss some issues.
I have outlined in point form the topics
of our discussion.
• An Operating Budget consistent of
years past has been set for 2016 with $10,000
being put aside to consult an Engineering
Firm in regards to the repairs needed for the
Break Wall. The Town is aware of the needed
repairs and hopes to be able to deal with
them in 2017. NOTE*Repairs will be costly.
• We will be working to revise the Job
Description of the Lake Matinenda Dock
Attendant as the past Job Description was
more focused on the duties of an Attendant
based at the Blind River Marina located
on Lake Huron rather than that of the
requirements of a Lake Matinenda Dock
Attendant.
• The Town has been made aware of ice
damage to the docks and is in the process
of making the necessary repairs. These
repairs include replacing boards, hardware
and ramps. Unfortunately over the winter
one ladder was damaged and the Town has
ordered a new ladder and will install it as
soon as it arrives.
• This also led to a conversation about
the installation, removal and storage of the
ladders. It was agreed that the Town would
be responsible for installation, removal and
storage from this point forward.
• The Town has been made aware of the
condition of sinkholes in the parking lot and
will make the necessary repairs as required.
• An ongoing concern about the Garage
Dumpsters-nuisance bears, violation
dumping and carelessness amongst users has
been addressed. The Town will be advertising
new regulations and would like our help in
canvassing the membership to inform them
that BULK dumping is no longer permitted
at the Garbage Bins upon convenience.
Effective immediately you can no longer
bulk dump appliances, furniture, building
materials, etc. beside the garbage bins.
• BULK PICK UP days are: May 19th,
June 16th, July 14th, August 18th, September
15th, October 13th, November 17th and
December 15th, 2016 by 7am. Please have all
BULK garbage at the bins the day before.
• In order to regulate violation dumping
the Town By-Law Officer-Jason Smith will
have an increased presence at the Landing to
monitor the situation.
• Lake Matinenda Landing will also be
equipped with camera’s to assist with ByLaw enforcement.
• With a busy cottage season upon
us Cottage Owners and Local Residents
with boat, PWC, ATV and utility trailers
(intending on leaving them there for a
long period of time) are asked to make
the necessary arrangements to store them
elsewhere if possible. At times the parking
lot can be heavily congested with an
abundance of trailers and if you can store
them off site it will open up more parking
for vehicles. You can contact Cliff Spratt at
705-849-7310 to arrange alternate parking at
an additional cost.
• The Town has been made aware of the
AGM scheduled for Saturday August 6th,
2016 and a request to have a Dock Attendant
on duty has been made.

Something new at the landing... a concrete ramp leading up to the finger docks.
