Many students in the martial arts are attracted to weapons training. This is
normal, because the martial art weapons appear more deadly then empty hand
training. Even though weapons training are a part of YHK, it takes a back seat
to empty hand training. If a student has not developed the skills with their
hands, they can never hope to become an expert with a weapon. All the weapon
techniques are extensions of the hands! In fact, most of the movements with
the weapons came from the hand techniques. A student can not walk down the
street with his or her weapon, so it is unlikely they will be able to use it for self
defense. This is one of the reasons why YHK stresses stick weapons as the
primary weapon. It is more likely a student will be able to find an object on the
street that they will be able to use as a stick weapon, such as a broom,
hammer, or something of this nature. It is important for us in YHK to keep the
weapon arts alive and not let them be lost in time. Training with weapons is
important and can teach the student many things. However it is important for
the instructors to make sure each student understands that with out the
mastering of the basic empty hand techniques, it will be impossible for them to
become a master of the weapons.

PROFESSOR BLEVINS
Professor Blevins and student David Snook traveled to Kentucky where the
Professor observed classes and conducted training. This was also a chance
for the Professor to meet the students and get to know them as well as for
them to get to meet him. The Professor was very impressed with the training
and the conduct of the Kentucky students and he felt this was a great visit.
Professor Blevins continued on to Ohio, where he observed the training and
taught classes. During this time Master Behm, was awarded the title of
Master, and presented his 6th. Degree Red/White Belt. There were four Brown
Belts promoted to 1st. Degree Black Belt as well as several colored belts by
Professor Blevins. This trip was a very successful trip for YHK, Professor
Yuson would be very proud of what is happening with his branch.
Randy Lee, a Blue Belt under the Professor traveled to Hawaii, where he and
his family were able to see two of the islands. Randy said they had a great time
and can’t wait to return.

MASTER JEFF BEHM
The first week of July, 2006 was a very good week for Yuson Hawaiian Kenpo.
Master Behm and his students hosted a large welcome home Professor party
that was second to none. His students and their families went out of their way
to make Professor Blevins and Dave Snook feel welcome and respected. This
is a true example of the Ohana sprit that we talk so much about.
During this party Professor Blevins awarded Sensei Behm with the title of
Master Instructor and presented him with his 6th. Degree Red/White Belt and
an YHK plaque. Master Behm has been training for 27 years under the
Professor!

Rico (center) with to of his friends
Rico is still training and would like to try for his belt soon. You can bet he
takes his training serious, because any day in Afghanistan you may have to use
it. This is something that the Professor learned while living there, things we
take for granted here in the states, Rico fights for each day. Let all of us in the
YHK Ohana (family) keep him in our prays. If you want to email Rico, please do
but remember it may that a few days for him to get back to you due to his
location.
