YUSON HAWAIIAN KENPO NEWS LETTER No. 7 Professor Yuson WORDS FROM PROFESSOR August, 2006 WEAPONS 1 Many students in the martial arts are attracted to weapons training. This is normal, because the martial art weapons appear more deadly then empty hand training. Even though weapons training are a part of YHK, it takes a back seat to empty hand training. If a student has not developed the skills with their hands, they can never hope to become an expert with a weapon. All the weapon techniques are extensions of the hands! In fact, most of the movements with the weapons came from the hand techniques. A student can not walk down the street with his or her weapon, so it is unlikely they will be able to use it for self defense. This is one of the reasons why YHK stresses stick weapons as the primary weapon. It is more likely a student will be able to find an object on the street that they will be able to use as a stick weapon, such as a broom, hammer, or something of this nature. It is important for us in YHK to keep the weapon arts alive and not let them be lost in time. Training with weapons is important and can teach the student many things. However it is important for the instructors to make sure each student understands that with out the mastering of the basic empty hand techniques, it will be impossible for them to become a master of the weapons. This was also a chance for the Professor to meet the students and get to know them as well as for them to get to meet him. The Professor was very impressed with the training and the conduct of the Kentucky students and he felt this was a great visit.
