The Mira Lagos HOA has been host to regularly scheduled community garage sales on the first Saturday of spring and fall, since
2010. This is becoming a BIG deal! If you are ready to clear out
the clutter, participating in the bi-annual community garage sale
is as easy as 1, 2, and 3!
1. Apply for a free permit. Call City of Grand Prairie Code Enforcement at 972-237-8049 or 237-8296 or apply online at
www.gptx.org. When you apply on line, a permit number will
be emailed directly to you.
2. Provide your permit number and address to the Social Committee to so we can advertise for you! All addresses received
by Monday, September 23rd at 5:00 p.m. will be included
on a “take-one” flier for shoppers to use the day of the sale.

3. Get ready to sell! You may place up to three (3) signs in the
ground (not on our street poles) to help direct traffic to your
address. Print advertising and signs will be placed by the association to promote the community-wide sale on Saturday.
Please remove all signs immediately following the close of
your sale.
If you wish to conduct your sale on the Friday before or the Sunday after, simply request your permit for the appropriate start
and stop dates and let us know. HOA advertising of the community garage sale will be for Saturday September 28 only.
The City of Grand Prairie limits residents to two garage sales
per year. According to Mira Lagos HOA Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CC&R’s), residents may conduct
garage sales only on dates designated by
the homeowners association.

Brown Patch and
St. Augustine
Watch for Brown Patch in St. Augustine turf as temperatures cool.
Brown Patch is a fungal disease that likes mild temperatures of
70-75 degrees and can increases with over irrigation and night
watering. It usually occurs in shady areas of the lawn and left
untreated can kill a large portion of your yard.
There is no cure, but it can be treated. Lawns with a history of the
disease should be sprayed annually in late September and again
in 3 weeks during early October with a fungicide like Terraclor or
Daconil. Early morning is the best time to water lawns. Be careful
not to over irrigate.

I am in the planning stages of setting up a Pet Registry Website
for Mira Lagos residents. Right now free internet tools are being
used and a beta test is underway. To be successful we need near
100% participation from pet owners to register their pets. Please

Other tips to help include mowing lower to increase air circulation through turf grass. Mow every 5-7 days, leaving the clippings
on the lawn. Check with your lawn care professional for details.

Mira Lagos had three residents graduate from the City of Grand
Prairie Citizen Police Academy (Class #33) in spring 2013.
These graduates completed a series of 13 classes, held on Thursday evenings and three Saturdays at the public safety building.
All three report being interested in continuing training for the
Citizens On Patrol (COP) program.
Thus far, Mira Lagos has graduated seven residents from the CPA
and is gaining recognition from the police department. Chief
Steve Dye’s commitment to allocating a COP patrol vehicle at
the Lake Ridge Parkway Fire Station has come to fruition. Since
early July, COP members from our area have enjoyed the convenience of checking out a car closer to home.
Safety signs such as a “No Trespassing” or “Beware of
Dog” sign and home security system or “No Soliciting”
sign may be used as long as it does not exceed six inches
by eight inches in size. CC&R Article IV Use Restrictions Sec. 4:19c
Signs of any kind are NOT allowed on the decorative
black lamp posts and poles in our community.

Feeding
Research has proven that your fall lawn feeding is one of the
most important ones of the year! Your lawn has just passed
through the stressful summer months and needs food to rebuild
itself.
Most premium-type lawn foods supply three sources of
nitrogen. The first source provides a quick shot of nitrogen
to give your lawn a nice greening effect. The other two are
controlled-released to provide a consistent supply of nitrogen
over the next several months. A 21-5-10 formula also supplies
the needed nutrients to stimulate root development, makes
your grass hardier for the winter months, and provides food for
next spring’s growth!
This is also the time to apply preemergents to control those
unseen broadleaf and grassy weed seeds to prevent them from
sprouting over winter and spring.
So, don’t kick back and settle into football season quite yetfinish those last lawn chores and enjoy the results next spring!
September 18, 2013 is the American Occupational Therapy
Association's National School Backpack Awareness Day. This
day is dedicated to helping others avoiding the pain and injury
that can come from heavy backpacks and bags. Parents can
take steps to help children load and wear backpacks the correct way to avoid health problems with simple tips like:
• A child’s backpack should weigh no more than about
10% of his or her body weight.
• Load heaviest items closest to the child’s back (the back
of the pack).
• Arrange books and materials so they won’t slide around
in the backpack.
• Distribute weight evenly by using both straps.
• The bottom of the pack should rest in the curve of the
lower back. It should never rest more than four inches
below the child’s waistline.

For twenty-three million students nationwide,
the school day begins and ends with a trip on
a school bus. The greatest risk is not riding the
bus, but approaching or leaving the bus. Before
children go back to school or start school, it is
essential that adults and children know traffic
safety rules.
Drivers
• When backing out of a driveway or leaving
a garage, watch out for children walking or
bicycling to school.
• When driving in neighborhoods with
•
school zones, watch out for young people
who may be thinking about getting to
school, but may not be thinking of getting
there safely.
Slow down. Watch for children walking
in the street, especially if there are no
sidewalks in the neighborhood.
Slow down. Watch for children playing
and congregating near bus stops.
Be alert. Children arriving late for the bus
may dart into the street without looking for
traffic.
Learn and obey the school bus laws in
your state. Learn the "flashing signal light
system" that school bus drivers use to alert
motorists of pending actions:
Yellow flashing lights indicate that the
bus is preparing to stop to load or unload
children. Motorists should slow down and
prepare to stop their vehicles.
Red flashing lights and extended stop arms
indicate that the bus has stopped, and that
children are getting on or off. Motorists
must stop their cars and wait until the red
lights stop flashing, the extended stop sign
is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving
before they can start driving again.
Children
• Get to the bus stop at least five minutes
before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
• When the bus approaches, stand at least
three giant steps (6 feet) away from the

curb, and line up away from the street.
Wait until the bus stops, the door opens,
and the driver says that it's okay before
stepping onto the bus.
If you have to cross the street in front of
the bus, walk on the sidewalk or along the
side of the road to a point at least five giant
steps (10 feet) ahead of the bus before you
cross. Be sure that the bus driver can see
you, and you can see the bus driver.
Use the handrails to avoid falls. When
exiting the bus, be careful that clothing
with drawstrings and book bags with straps
don't get caught in the handrails or doors.
Never walk behind the bus.
Walk at least three giant steps away from
the side of the bus.
If you drop something near the bus, tell the
bus driver. Never try to pick it up because
the driver may not be able to see you.
Parents
• Teach children to follow these common
sense practices to make school bus
transportation safer.
• Watch out for suspicious vehicles or
persons! Report any suspicious activity to
911 immediately!

Quick Fixins’ - Quick Picklin’
The notion of canning and pickling can send some people running for the hills. Most cannot get enthusiastic
about standing in the kitchen for hours preserving vegetables and fruit. But pickled vegetables can make
for a snack packed with flavor. In addition to being a very healthy alternative to other crunchy snacks,
pickling is a terrific way to snack on out-of-season vegetables. Although the quick pickling method
doesn’t preserve your vegetables like the traditional method, you will be able to store your jar of
pickles for up to three weeks. So how do we get a jar of pickles without the sore feet? Easy! Quick
pickling is a great solution and it takes no more than an hour - and most of that hour doesn’t require
constant attention by you over the stove. Below is a great method for quick pickling. Remember,
you can use any vegetables that sound good to you. Just pick your favorite crunchy carrots or
cucumbers or cabbage and pickle away!
Spicy Pickled Vegetables
Ingredients
6 cups water
4 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 pound baby carrots
2 cups pearl onions, peeled (about 10 ounces)
1/3 cup sliced jalapeño peppers (about 2 large)
8 ounces haricots verts, trimmed
4 cups white vinegar
Directions
Bring first 3 ingredients to a boil in a large saucepan.
Add carrots to pan; cook 2 minutes. Add onions; cook 1 minute. Add pepper slices; cook 1 minute.
Add beans; cook 1 minute. Remove from heat; stir in vinegar.
Let stand at room temperature 1 hour.
Pour into a large bowl; cover and refrigerate 24 hours. Store in an airtight container in refrigerator
up to 2-3 weeks.
