tents & shelters A BUYING GUIDE TO: TENTS AND SHELTERS OCTOBER 2012 374 Lt Bourke Street, Melbourne 3000 + Tel: (03) 9600 0599 + email: bogong@bogong.com.au + www.bogong.com.au Bogong has been Melbourne’s leading store for lightweight technical tents for many years. We stock over 40 models of tent and shelter, and we have over 15 models pitched for you to look at and explore in our upstairs showroom. No other store carries such a wide range of quality brands and models. Come and talk to us! Choosing a lightweight shelter. Buying a tent isn’t easy. A poor tent can sour your outdoor experiences. In extreme conditions, an insufficient shelter can be a threat to your safety. Having the right tent for your outdoor activities will help make every trip an enjoyable and safe one – so it pays to get it right! Finding the right combination of space, weight, durability, weatherproofness and price can be daunting. At Bogong we can help you choose the right tent. Choice of Brands At Bogong we offer an outstanding choice of the world’s leading brands. Each brand has different strengths: some will be more suited to your needs than others. Beware of ‘one brand’ stores. Will they be offering independent advice as to the best tent for your needs? As a truly independent store we have carefully selected the best brands for all users. Tent Display Showroom Did you know that Bogong has more high quality lightweight tents on display than any other store in Melbourne? Brochures can give only limited information. You need to see a tent pitched to appreciate its features. Experienced Staff Bogong staff are hand-picked for their wide experience in all outdoor situations. We can advise you on your tent requirements for any situation whether it be for Patagonia or the Grampians! Chances are, we have a staff member who has been there and can give you practical advice. To Help You Choose ● In what weather do you plan to use your tent? If you will encounter cold conditions – snow, high winds, heavy rain – you will need a tent to cope. The more extreme the weather, the stronger the tent will need to be. This can mean more weight and cost. Smaller tents catch less wind and are more stable than larger models of the same design configuration. On the other hand, excellent ventilation is a must if you’re trekking in the heat. ● How much can you carry? No matter how weatherproof a tent may be, if it is too heavy for you, it is impractical. Manufacturers of quality light tents often use exotic materials to achieve excellent weather protection, but these can be expensive. ● How much room do you need? Do you throw in a spare kitchen sink? If you like to bring all your toys with you on your outdoor expeditions, you will need to consider the vestibule and interior spaces of your tent. Tent Weights There is much misinformation about tent weights – beware of minimum tent weights quoted by brands. Often, these figures are incorrect or render the tent unusable. At Bogong we have weighed our tents ourselves, to enable you to compare across all models and brands. We define a tent minimum weight as the fly, inner, poles, tent bag, pole bag, peg bag and six pegs – the minimum for camping in good conditions. made for Australian bushwalking and alpine conditions Mont Moondance Series Mont’s Moondance tents are lightweight without compromising the integrity of the floor materials. The Moondance range offers the ultimate in minimalist fast-and-light tents. It’s a marvellous night for a Moondance. 1.58 kg 1 person, 1 entrance 220 x 88 x 98 cm (LxWxH) 220 71 70 At just 1.6kg, the Moondance I is the ultimate fast and light minimalist tent. It features a heavy-duty floor and good ventilation and is sure to become a favourite with the solo walker, adventure racer or cycle tourer. 57 88 90 Moondance I $399 Features: • 3 season • 2 DAC Featherlite™ poles with wishbone hub design with extra cross pole creating greater internal space. • Heavy duty 10,000+ mm PU bucket floor • Partial No-See-Um mesh inner tent • Reflective storm guys • Optional Moondance Footprints (various prices) The Moondance series features an innovative wishbone hub pole design that gives more space inside the tent. Moondance I Footprint $44.95 170g Moondance II $499 1.89 kg 2 person, 2 entrances 220 x 132 x 103 cm (LxWxH) 57 The Mont Moondance 2 is an exceptionally light tent. It comes in at 1.89 kg complete with all the required pegs, guys and bags to carry it in. However it remains an extremely functional walking tent. To achieve this Mont have used the highest quality fabrics such as a laminated floor with an extremely high waterhead of 10,000mm whilst still very light. This is a more expensive fabric construction which most other brands do not use. 57 Moondance III $579 220 2.50 kg 2 or 3 persons, 2 entrances 220 x 170 x 112 cm (LxWxH) The Mont Moondance 3, whilst designed to fit three persons at a pinch, makes a perfect roomy two person tent at a great weight of only 2.50kg. More spacious than say the Mont Firefly (2.8kg) or Exped Venus (2.95kg), but lighter! So if you find standard two person tents unnecessarily confining this gives you the opportunity for more elbow room without breaking your back. The Moondance III comes with the footprint inclusive. 230g One of our most popular and most highly regarded tents ever! - The Moondance III in use in New Zealand. page two 111 110 132 134 Moondance II Footprint $54.95 230g Mont Fire Fly $549 2.51kg Specifically designed for Australian bushwalkers, the Fire Fly is your go anywhere, do anything tent! Exped’s clever design and attention to detail. Exped is a Swiss brand known for its ingenious simplicity. Exped gear is multi-use. Lightweight. Functional, not faddish. Exped integrate superb craftsmanship with superior materials with the emphasis on durability. So when all is said and done the bottom line is: Exped maximizes your outdoor experience with a minimum of gear! Fast and easy set-up: 1/ Slide poles into sleeves. 2/ Secure poles in their pockets. 3/ Tension. And that’s it! •Continuous sleeves allow poles to pass through intersections easily. •Canopies are factory mounted, and just a few stakes and guy lines are needed to pitch any Exped tent. •Colour-coded poles and sleeves eliminate guesswork. •Reflective, glow-in-the-dark zipper pulls are easy to locate. •Rounded doors are easy to operate one-handed. •The fly on the four season tents and the Polaris has two types of pole sleeve: exterior sleeves for easy set-ups, and interior sleeves for reduced resistance to rain, wind or snow. Adjustable floor loops of Dyneema cord for easy placement of tent pegs. They put a 20 cm radius at your disposal in which to find the ideal spot to sink the peg. Exped Ingenuity. The spacious interior and generous vestibule of the Venus III DLX Plus, fits 2-3 people very comfortably. Excellent ventilation: even in rainy conditions, condensation is kept to a minimum by large opposed vents. This design promotes a chimney effect to maintain air circulation. Lightweight Gear Loft. Attaches to the canopy roof with adjustable elastic straps found in the corners and the center. Ideal for storing your glasses or drying gear. Multi-functional and simple use •Inner canopies can remain attached to the fly. •The fly can be used alone – for storage or as a basic shelter. •In clear weather the inner canopy can be used alone, with or without a tarp cover. (Pole pockets at the corners enable this configuration.) •The canopy can be partially unhooked to increase space beneath the fly. Numerous zip sliders mean you can open the door or vent the tent in many different ways.
