Confluence Health Connecting Healthcare Providers in North Central Washington August 2016 // Issue 03 Confluence Health’s Wenatchee Valley Hospital & Clinics and Moses Lake Clinic have been designated as lung cancer screening centers by the American College of Radiology. In this issue: Lung Cancer Screening Center 1 Department Spotlight: Oncology2 Regional Connections3 Education Opportunities 3 Physician Relations Contact Info 4 EHR 101 4 Recruiting 4 The ACR Lung Cancer Screening Center designation is a voluntary program that recognizes facilities that have committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer. In order to receive this distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACR in computed tomography in the chest module, as well as undergo a rigorous assessment of its lung cancer screening protocol and infrastructure. Casey Vogt Physician Relations Liaison 509.667.7543 (direct) 509.293.0382 (cell) casey.vogt@ confluencehealth.org Low-dose CT screenings began at Wenatchee Valley Hospital and Moses Lake last fall, and a user-friendly EPIC order set with note writer has been implemented for the required preliminary shared decision-making visit needed for best practice, as well as Medicare compliance. Confluence Health prioritized the designation because lung cancer screening with low-dose computed tomography scans and appropriate follow-up care significantly reduces lung cancer deaths. Participants in the National Cancer Institutes’s National Lung Cancer Screening Trial who received low-dose CT scans had a 20-percent lower risk of dying from lung cancer than participants who received standard chest x-rays. In December 2013, the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended screening of adults ages 55 to 80 who have a 30 pack/year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. Lung cancer is the nation’s leading cancer killer, taking the lives of more people each year than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined.
