Emergency Departments. Our University Campus

VISION
Critical Care
Surgical Services
As the premier health care system of Central New
England, UMass Memorial is committed to providing
unparalleled care for critically ill patients of all ages.
Our highly trained team cares for patients in
multiple critical care units—including Medical ICUs,
Surgical ICUs, a Cardiac ICU, an 11-bed Pediatric
ICU and our acclaimed 43-bed, Level III Neonatal
ICU. Our close-knit, interdisciplinary and highly
collaborative approach translates to better
outcomes and a unique practice environment.
Surgical services at UMass Memorial Medical
Center include general and complex surgical
procedures. As part of our University Campus
expansion, 10 operating rooms were added with
the most advanced technology available. These
supplement operating suites on our Memorial
Campus and our day surgery service on our
Hahnemann Campus. In addition to the general
surgical services, UMass Memorial Medical Center
offers advanced surgical services such as
bariatric, cardiac, neurosurgery, organ transplant
(kidney, liver, pancreas), orthopedic, pediatric,
vascular, surgical oncology and trauma.
The e ICU Program provides 24/7 support in the
care of critically ill patients by ensuring continuous
physician access and instant communication among
a team of ICU caregivers. Utilizing sophisticated
voice, data and video monitoring technology, the
program transmits data to the Medical Center’s
e ICU Support Center, where that information is
integrated with physician notes, current
medications, recent test results and approved care
plans to ensure that any sudden change in patient
health status results in a prompt, data-driven
intervention by the hospital-based team.
Anesthesiology
The Anesthesiology Department provides
perioperative care on a 24-hour basis for all
surgical subspecialties at UMass Memorial,
including preoperative consultation, intraoperative
care, postoperative management as required,
Surgical Intensive Care Unit management, and
chronic and acute pain management.
UMass Memorial is the region’s trusted academic medical center,
committed to improving the health of the people of Central New
England through excellence in clinical care, service, teaching and
research. Through our partnership with the University of Massachusetts
Medical School, our physicians and staff teach tomorrow’s physicians,
nurses and other health care professionals. They are also an integral part
of research efforts that bring patients throughout the nation the very
latest diagnostic and treatment protocols.
The Medical Center offers a full complement of sophisticated
technology and support services, providing the region with specialists
renowned for their expertise in clinical areas including cardiology,
orthopedics, cancer, emergency medicine, surgery, women’s health
and children’s medical services.

Primary Care
Children’s Care
Women’s Health Care
Primary care is of the highest priority for
UMass Memorial and its academic partner, the
University of Massachusetts Medical School,
which is consistently nationally ranked in the
top 10 percent for its primary care programs.
UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center
is a “hospital within a hospital,” providing
extensive services to meet children's needs.
Our medical and surgical specialists are
skilled in and devoted to the care of children.
Our pediatricians—many with subspecialty
training in cardiology, hematology,
orthopedics or other relevant areas—
emphasize wellness to ensure each child’s
optimum growth and development. The
Children’s Medical Center is a member
of the National Association of Children's
Hospitals and Related Institutions.
UMass Memorial offers the most advanced
treatments for conditions affecting women
today. In addition to general obstetrics and
gynecology, the Women’s Center offers
extensive resources for women requiring
specialty care including breast care in our
Comprehensive Breast Center, infertility,
pelvic floor dysfunction, high-risk pregnancy,
gynecologic oncology and osteoporosis.
And our Maternity Center welcomes more
births than any other hospital in Central
Massachusetts.
The UMass Memorial primary care network
includes more than 500 physicians in general
medicine, general pediatrics, med/peds, family
medicine and geriatrics. The three primary
care departments work together through the
Office for Primary Care to assure the strength
of the network. The office supports a series of
activities to develop practices that model the
concept of the “medical home.”
Practice opportunities include academic
practices, residency training sites, community
health centers, community-based practices,
and private practice settings. There are also
ample opportunities to teach medical students
and residents and to participate in practicebased research.
Our Centers of Excellence
Through our partnership with the
University of Massachusetts Medical
School, the Cancer Center conducts
extensive research and clinical trials,
and utilizes the latest discoveries from
laboratories and research centers
worldwide. Access to these resources
enables our specialists to offer the most
advanced diagnoses and treatment
options available in our region, ensuring
optimal care for every patient. The result
is state-of-the-art cancer prevention,
diagnosis and therapy, and patient
support resources.

For the physicians of the UMass Memorial Medical Group, Central and Western
Massachusetts is much more than a “service area.” It is a place they are proud to call
home—the very heart of New England, featuring a resurgent Worcester and a surrounding
ring of friendly suburbs.
Worcester offers great diversity that
contributes to the cultural vitality of the
region. With world-renowned museums and
concert halls, theaters and galleries, as well
as diverse performing groups, ethnic festivals
and artists of every
discipline, you will always
find something great to
do and see in Worcester.
Central Massachusetts
has some of the
strongest public school systems in the nation.
The region offers a wealth of educational
opportunities encouraging young people
to become productive citizens in our ever
changing world. In addition to the 47 public
schools and 20 private schools for primary
and secondary education, Worcester is also
home to 13 colleges and universities. This
infusion of students, athletics, concerts,
exhibitions and special performances put
the city in a league of its own.

commuting distance. It offers
physicians and their families

commuter rail to the history
and excitement of Boston,
the beaches of Cape Cod,

Berkshires, the White Mountains
of New Hampshire and the
Green Mountains of Vermont.
Beyond the city, Central
Massachusetts offers
physicians and their families
a wealth of rewarding lifestyle
options. From such affluent
suburbs as Hopkinton and
Harvard to dozens of quiet, rural
communities, the region presents a

As a comprehensive, multi-campus system of care, UMass
Memorial takes great pride in its ability to integrate the
unique expertise, perspective and passion of physicians from all
backgrounds and specialty fields into a common sense of purpose.
The result is a shared feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction
as the system continues to gain prominence as a premier
professional destination.
At the same time, for a good-sized academic
medical center, it feels smaller and more
collegial than you would expect. The
leadership team is very approachable, and the
entire system is financially sound. The future
is bright, and we’re growing both academically
and clinically. That is a good thing.
John Keaney Jr., MD
UMass Memorial Medical Center
Cardiovascular Medicine
There’s a sense of wide-open possibility here. The
facilities are incredible—the eICU, for example, is
truly on the forefront of critical care medicine—but
at the same time there’s a real feeling of camaraderie.
I had other opportunities, but I readily chose UMass
Memorial for the chance to build my own program
in a kinder, gentler, more collaborative setting. The
system has shown a real commitment to making
these things happen…this is an exciting time to
come work here.
There’s a singularity of vision between the
medical school and the system—UMass
Memorial brings the two together more
closely than other environments I’ve seen. The
medical school itself is in the formative stages
of joining the upper echelons of medical
schools, and that creates a feeling of being able
to make a real, tangible impact.

New England has an energy—a natural beauty and
an active lifestyle—that is just unequaled. Living in
Central Mass, you definitely feel like you’re close
enough to everything that matters…the arts, business,
academia. But at the same time, you’re not living in a
city setting, so you feel like you have room to breathe.
