Worcester offers great diversity that contributes to the cultural vitality of the region. With world-renowned museums and concert halls, theaters and galleries, as well as diverse performing groups, ethnic festivals and artists of every discipline, you will always find something great to do and see in Worcester. Central Massachusetts has some of the strongest public school systems in the nation. The region offers a wealth of educational opportunities encouraging young people to become productive citizens in our ever changing world. In addition to the 47 public schools and 20 private schools for primary and secondary education, Worcester is also home to 13 colleges and universities. This infusion of students, athletics, concerts, exhibitions and special performances put the city in a league of its own. Downtown Worcester, MA P 9 LIFESTYLE Worcester’s convenient location—minutes from the Mass Pike and I-495—brings spousal employment opportunities with industry leaders in technology, biotechnology, finance and manufacturing within easy commuting distance. It offers physicians and their families rapid access via highway and commuter rail to the history and excitement of Boston, the beaches of Cape Cod, and skiing and hiking in the Berkshires, the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the Green Mountains of Vermont. Beyond the city, Central Massachusetts offers physicians and their families a wealth of rewarding lifestyle options. From such affluent suburbs as Hopkinton and Harvard to dozens of quiet, rural communities, the region presents a wonderful and varied range of settings—all at a fraction of the cost of living associated with the Boston area. LIFESTYLE P 10 “ As a comprehensive, multi-campus system of care, UMass Memorial takes great pride in its ability to integrate the unique expertise, perspective and passion of physicians from all backgrounds and specialty fields into a common sense of purpose. The result is a shared feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction as the system continues to gain prominence as a premier professional destination. At the same time, for a good-sized academic medical center, it feels smaller and more collegial than you would expect. The leadership team is very approachable, and the entire system is financially sound. The future is bright, and we’re growing both academically and clinically. That is a good thing. John Keaney Jr., MD UMass Memorial Medical Center Cardiovascular Medicine There’s a sense of wide-open possibility here. The facilities are incredible—the eICU, for example, is truly on the forefront of critical care medicine—but at the same time there’s a real feeling of camaraderie. I had other opportunities, but I readily chose UMass Memorial for the chance to build my own program in a kinder, gentler, more collaborative setting. The system has shown a real commitment to making these things happen…this is an exciting time to come work here. There’s a singularity of vision between the medical school and the system—UMass Memorial brings the two together more closely than other environments I’ve seen. The medical school itself is in the formative stages of joining the upper echelons of medical schools, and that creates a feeling of being able to make a real, tangible impact. ” Julie Pilitsis, MD, PhD UMass Memorial Medical Center Neurosurgery New England has an energy—a natural beauty and an active lifestyle—that is just unequaled. Living in Central Mass, you definitely feel like you’re close enough to everything that matters…the arts, business, academia. But at the same time, you’re not living in a city setting, so you feel like you have room to breathe.
