September 16, 2010 To provide its members the opportunity to collectively serve the community. Through the efforts of fund-raising and hands-on projects, the club focuses on serving the visually and hearing impaired, drug prevention and diabetes awareness. REGULAR CLUB MEETING & BOARD MEETING INFORMATION Maxi’s Cafe: Sacramento Doubletree Hotel, 2001 Point West Way, Sacramento, CA 95815 The last regular club meeting: was held Thursday, September 2nd at Maxi’s Café in the Doubletree Hotel. The following members were in attendance: Eugene Okada, Dr. Ed Ishii, Charlene Sanui, Will and Agnes Deguchi, George & Shirley Sato, Erin Komatsubara, PDG Dan Wenger, PIP Kay Fukushima, Karen Owyoung, Gloria Inaba, Jerry & Coleen Nakayama, Ann Brady, Kiyoshi Sanui, Teri Panscik, Alice Yagi, Jim and Tee Fujii, Bob Marshall, Chris Oshiro, Russ Zochowski, Molly Kimura, Bruce & Sasha Eastley, Dan Goodwin, Gloria Smith, Amos Freeman, Gayle Kono, Gilbert Barrow, Mary Ann Miyao, 1VDG James Fong, and several guests from District 4-C1 including Terry & Sandy Anderson, Francis & Norma Bognuda, Elizabeth Olson and guest speaker Victor Mitre. Guest speaker Victor Mitre, Director of Fund Raising for the Medic Alert Foundation, pro- vided an interesting presentation on the Medic Alert Foundation and its initiatives. Medic Alert is often referred to as the “Jewelry Prescription”. The Medic Alert Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides bracelets (and other jewelry) that contains personal medical information, a personal Identification Number, and a phone number that can be called in case of emergency that will connect valid Emergency Medical Service responders to the Medic Alert Foundation database which has specific medical information about the wearer. Apparently, the Medic Alert Foundation also works with service organizations such as Lions Clubs to sponsor children in need of the Medic Alert services to help provide bracelets for children between ages 4 and 14. The children’s sponsorship program covers the cost of the bracelet and 10 years of Medic Alert service. The Medic Alert Foundation has found that children between the ages of 4 and 14 were the most “at risk” and that is why their program covers children for that 10 year time frame. Anyone who has a need for this type of Medic Alert service can become a member, the costs are quite reasonable at about $30 per year after an initial cost of $45 for the first year which covers the basic bracelet and the first year of service. Immediate Past President Mary Ann Miyao was also presented with a beautiful plaque by current club President Jerry Nakayama at the meeting and President Jerry’s wife Colene was the lucky winner of the very popular 50/50 raffle. eral small armies but we did manage to at least put a dent into the excellent fare. Finally we had the water balloon toss which essentially capped the day’s events. All in all it was another very successful club picnic. We had three visitors from Japan, Mr. and Mrs. Ohashi and Mr. Iga who all had a great time and even presented our club with a generous donation of $300 (wow, very generous indeed)!! See some initial photos from the picnic on page 3. There were several folks taking pictures at the event so there will very likely be more photos in subsequent bulletins. Japan Night Raffle Prizes Requested: Lion Jim Fujii is requesting that the Sacramento Senator Lions “dig deep” and come up with some awesome raffle prizes for the upcoming Japan Night Fund Raiser event to be held Friday, October 15th. So, let’s do our best to come up with some great raffle prizes (although I don’t think we are expecting anyone to donate a Mercedes A-class automobile) so that we can make the Japan Night raffle a great event!! We have a lot of service projects we’d like to do this year so we’ll need funds and raffles like this are a big help!! Dues are due: This is another friendly reminder that annual club dues are due. Thank you to all the Senator Lions who have already paid this year’s dues of $120. For those of you that still owe your annual dues, please submit your payments to club Secretary Erin Komatsubara who will gladly record your payment and pass them on to the club Treasurer who will deposit them into the club’s administrative fund account so we can pay our LCI and various multiple district dues. There, she counted the money; fifty thousand dollars! Andy said, “We’ve got to give it back.” Sally said, “Finders keepers.” She put the money back in the bag and hid it in their attic. The next day, two police officers were canvassing the neighborhood looking for the money, and knocked on their door. “Pardon me, did either of you find a bag that fell out of an armored car yesterday?” Sally said, “No”. He opened his suitcase for the customs inspector. “Sir”, asked the inspector, “what’s in all these bottles?” “Lourdes water,” explained Haloran. The inspector cast a suspicious eye on the bottles, uncorked one, and sniffed it. He did the same with another, and then another. “Water, is it?” snapped the customs agent. “These bottles contain nothing but pure whiskey.” “Well, as I live and breathe!” exclaimed Haloran ecstatically. “A blessed miracle!” after they retired. Holding hands, they walked back to their old school. It was not locked, so they entered, and found the old desk they’d shared, where Andy had carved “I love you, Sally.” On their way back home, a bag of money fell out of an armored car, practically landing at their feet. Sally quickly picked it up and, Work History: 1) My first job was working in an Orange Juice factory, but I got canned. Couldn't concentrate. 2) Then I worked in the woods as a Lumberjack, but just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the axe. 3) After that, I tried We’re on the Web! www.senatorlions.com being a Tailor, but wasn't suited for it -- mainly because it was a sew-sew job. 4) Next, I tried working in a Muffler Factory, but that was too exhausting. 5) Then, tried being a Chef - figured it would add a little spice to my life, but just didn't have the thyme. 6) Next, I attempted being a Deli Worker, but any way I sliced it... I couldn't cut the mustard. 7) My best job was as a Musician, but eventually found I wasn't noteworthy. 8) I studied a long time to become a Doctor, but didn't have any patience. 9) Next, was a job in a Shoe Factory. Tried hard but just didn't fit in. 10) I became a Professional Fisherman, but discovered I couldn't live on my net income. 11) Managed to get a good job working for a Pool Maintenance Company, but the work was just too draining. 12) So then I got a job in a Workout Center , but they said I wasn't fit for the job. 13) After many years of trying to find steady work, I finally got a job as a Historian - until I realized there was no future in it. 14) My last job was working in Starbucks, but had to quit because it was the same old grind. 15) So, I tried Retirement and found I’m perfect for the job!
