Indiana Chapter Q–2 “Wings Over the Dunes” JULY 2006 Volume 8, Issue 7 “ Summer Is Here” Had a good meeting this month again. Want to Congratulate Chuck Thomas for winning the “DUH” award. Seems he backed his trailer into a tree because he didn’t want to hit his new garage. Quite a few funny ones this month but Chuck won hands down. Berti bid on surprise package in the auction and turned out to be a brain. Yes, I said a brain. Looked pretty real to me but turned out to be Jell-O. Nice job Ken. We had 25 members show up tonight and among them was Scotty and Ella Cripe. Good to hear from them and needs help at Wing Ding. If you are available for a couple hours, contact Scotty. Don’t forget that we have Ride for Kids on July 9th. We will “LEAVE” at Bob Evans at 6:30. If you want to eat breakfast, do so before hand. Bob’s opens at 6 AM so might Visit Us! Our gathering place: Pantheon Restaurant Located at: 5900 US Hwy 6, Portage Commons Shopping Plaza, Portage, IN When: Last Monday of every month Time: 6:00 pm to eat – 7:00 pm to meet Table of Contents CD Article Assistant CD’s & Dinner Rides Rider Educator Page 2 3 4 not have time to finish. Our donation is real close to 5 hundred bucks so please join us on the ride. Had good luck at the ANNA ride this year. Many door prizes were won by us. Tickets to Railcars-Marty’s gift certificate and lucky Donna Newbold won a ‘FRISBEE”. Way to go Donna. The ride was real nice and we earned pins and new T-shirts. Had dinner at Boundary Waters in Demotte which is on the ride schedule. It’s one of the best. The dessert plate was won by Ken and Judy. It was a wonderful array of cakes well decorated for the 4th. Top that one, Ken and Judy. Ride safe all. R&R How would you like to earn a FREE one year membership or more? Wow what great weather we have been having. We hope all of you have been able to do a little riding. I know every chance we get; we are on ours and going. We had our annual garage sale on May 27th. We want to thank all of the people who donated things for the sale and all of those who came out to help. A special thanks to Dale & Linda Shurr for letting us use their garage. For anyone who was not there at the garage sale and ever wondered what Kevin Case looks like in a dress! Well all I can say is that is was not a pretty sight. (But we did get pictures) There were a few of our chapter members go to the B&E appreciation day event on June 2. Chapter U2 was putting on a benefit for “Ride for Kids”. We did our fund raiser for “Ride for Kids” at Camp land on June 17th. We had quite a few members there to cook and help out. We really appreciate the ones who showed up in 96 degree weather to raise money for our fund raiser. Again a big THANK YOU, we could not have done it without you. Also, a big thank you to Campland for letting us set up on their lot. Also for spending a lot of their money to help us out. We have a lot of rides and campouts coming up in the next few months. We will have sign-up sheets at the meetings. If you plan on going to some of the things we have planned, please sign the sheets or else call us so can make sure we have enough reservations. Also if there is a ride you would like to see or put on please do not hesitate to let a staff member know. We would be glad to help you set it up. The camping and shopping trip for July 21 & 22 has changed a little. We will be camping at Michigan City campground instead of Warren Dunes State park. When I called for reservations they were all booked up. We will be camping at Michigan City campground on 421. We will leave for Saugatuck MI Saturday around 9:30 or so. If you would like to come and join us for the ride, come on by so we can all ride together. We will spend the day in Saugatuck, shopping, eating and sight seeing. Then we will come back to the campground and just hang out. We will be doing the Ride for Kids on July 9th. Hope to see a lot of support from this chapter, remember this is a really good way to “HELP THE KIDS”. So please show up or else donate. We did the “ANNA” ride on June 24. There were about 16 from our chapter to showed up. Some of us camped on Friday night, and did the ride on Saturday. We found a really nice campground by Renesslaer. We do plan on going back there to camp again. They made us feel very welcome. Please remember, we are getting a lot of new faces at our meeting and dinner rides. Please introduce yourselves and make them feel welcome. We were all new at one time or another and we know how we felt when someone made us feel welcome. Have a great month and Ride safe, Ride fun and enjoy life. Ray & Donna Newbold Beware of “The Book” Indiana Q–2 Portage, IN Region D “Wings Over the Dunes” From Your Q-2 Assistant CD By Ron and Joe Ann Byers Hi fellow wingers and friends. The month of June was a lot of fun. Ice cream rides, dinner rides, dinner and a movie night, the ANNA ride and camping. There was 16 from our chapter that participated in the Anna ride on Saturday and there were 139 bikes on the 95 mile ride. The goal this year was to beat last years donations of $50,000. We didn’t hear if they beat that figure. They held an auction after the ride and had a baseball autographed by Ryan Sandburg and a couple of tickets to one of the Cubs games that went for $550.00. They had a Napa Mini Chopper that was raffled off too. Our group won quite a few of the door prizes. We have had a busy month and July will be also. There are 11 or 12 people going to Wing Ding in Nashville Tn. Well, to all ahappy 4th of July and a safe one. Joe Ann & I look forward to seeing each and everyone at the dinner rides, campouts and all the other activities thay are planned. Please look at the calendar and come out and ride with all of your friends. Ride safe and be HAPPY Ron and Joe Ann Chapter Q–2 would like to thank everyone for being part of our organization. Newsletter Editor: Jan & Larry Webmaster: Butch Stidam Page 3 By Kevin & Mona Case FROM THE DINNING ROOM Hi every one in our Q-2 family of friends, Mona C and my self (Kevin C) are taking all requests for any dinner ride you would like. Not only can you pick the spot to eat you can also pick the night. Now you can’t beat that . Rider Educators ERC & ABATE COURSE I’d like to start by saying “Hello” to everyone in Q-2. I’d like to extend a big “Thank You” to Larry and Jan for their time as rider educators and a big “Thank You “ to all the officers for their vote of confidence in asking Donna and Me to fill their shoes. I hope with Donna’s help I can be as informative and helpful as they were. This first article was brought about by two events. Donna, last weekend, took the ABATE beginner riders course and I just finished the GWRRA experienced rider course. Dale and Linda Shurr also attended the ERC. All I can say is simply ‘if you haven’t ever taken this course, you really should consider it the next time it’s within reach.” After talking about our weekend sessions, Donna and I have come to the conclusion that both courses are really quite similar. The biggest difference is quite obvious, Abate starts out with hours of classroom material and provides little 200cc bikes, while we are riding our Goldwings. They are possibly the most massive machine to attempt to finesse through a “figure 8.” So, what did I learn? I learned that you can in fact do a “U” turn inside a box not much bigger than a single car garage without putting your feet down. I found out that what Donna and I were both taught, though separately, and at very different levels, really does work. You can actually have better control and turn tighter by not looking in front of the bike but by turning your head to where you want to go. (Put your Chin on your shoulder if necessary). There was a lot of zig-zagging between cones set up to emulate various situations. We did a lot of emergency stopping while straight, around corners, while turning and obstacle avoidance. My telling you about all the finer points can never take the place of you personally taking the course yourself. I thought I was pretty good, experienced rider, sure of myself and my abilities. I found out something. While I was sure of my abilities, with the knowledge gained from these instructors, and practice, I got better. Nothing really miraculous, but I’ve but I found out some things I didn’t know this bike could do. I also found out some things I didn’t think I could do. It’s a great feeling when you realize you’re not too old to learn a few tricks, even a better feeling when you realize you just came away a safer, better prepared rider. Ride safe, Jim and Donna O’Rourke.
