From The CFHS Administrative Team
While the temperatures may not be convincing, spring has arrived at the Forge! We
hope that each of our Forge Families enjoys a happy, safe, and healthy spring break.
The last nine weeks of the year are busier than ever as we enjoy watching our spring
sports teams compete, our fine arts students perform, and we begin to look forward to
Prom and After Prom, awards nights, Senior Banquet and Graduation for the Class of
2013, scheduling for next year, and so much more! There are many things going on at
the Forge and we hope that you will be able to join us for as many events as your schedule allows.
We also know that testing season is upon us as well; testing for Advanced Placement
classes will begin Monday, May 6 and run through Friday, May 17. SOL testing will begin
shortly thereafter on May 21, which is a week earlier than previous years. This time of
year is an often stressful time, and we encourage our students to remain focused on their
classes, be mindful of assignment deadlines and due dates, and to prepare early for
testing. We also hope that our students maintain healthy eating and resting patterns in
order to be at their best during the last weeks of the school year.
We would also like to suggest to our parents that this is an excellent time to have an
Important conversation with your student(s) regarding the importance of making good
choices, especially when in school and when out with friends. It is also a good time to
review the SCPS Dress Code with your child. This is a busy time and a fun time; we hope
that each of our students are careful and will make good decisions!

PTSO Membership dues remain the same for the 20122013 school year….$10 for the entire family. Your PTSO
dues support the Renaissance Program (a free academic
incentive program available for all students), Teacher
Appreciation Events, the After Prom and the Scholarship
program. We gave eight $500 scholarships to our 2012
graduating class. In order to apply for a PTSO scholarship, you must be a member of the PTSO.
CFHS PTSO Scholarships Available
Scholarships are a great way to earn money for college. Do
you know that the Colonial Forge PTSO awards scholarships
to outstanding seniors who've given back to their school and
to the community? The hours you have spent involved in
athletics, band, clubs, and volunteering can be turned into
cash for college. To be eligible, you or your parent/guardian
need to be a current member of the PTSO. A year's
membership is just $10 and you can join anytime before
March 29th to be eligible. PTSO membership forms are
available in the front office and on Fusion. Scholarship
applications will be available starting Monday, February 11th,
2013 in the counseling center and/or on the school website
and must be turned in by Friday, April 19th, 2013 at 3:00 p.m.

Colonial Forge High School Prom Contract
In order to promote a healthy, safe, enjoyable evening for all students and guests, the following procedures will
be in place for this dance. All parents, students, and guests must read, understand, and sign this agreement.
Also Colonial Forge encourages families to discuss these rules together prior to the dance.
(Please read, sign, and return to Miss Keenan in room 207 by Wednesday, April 17th.)
Colonial Forge High School rules state that all guests must be under the age of 21 and that middle school students may
not attend. ALL Colonial Forge students and their guests must complete the guest contract and are required to abide by
all school rules and terms of the contract. Anyone exhibiting disruptive behavior will be removed from the dance, parents will be notified, and NO refunds will be given. Prom is held off-campus and for the purpose of this event the
building and parking lot where the event is held is considered school board property and is subject to all Stafford County Public Schools rules and regulations.
The dance will begin at 8:00 PM and end at 12:00 PM. NO STUDENTS or guests will be admitted after 10:00 PM unless prior arrangements have been made with activities director, Mr. Collier. No additional tickets will be available at the
door.
Once students or guests enter the dance, they must remain in the building until ready to leave for the evening. When
leaving, students and guests must leave the Expo Center grounds and may not return. No loitering is allowed in the
parking lot.
Students and guests who do not drive themselves to the dance must be picked up no later than 12:15 - fifteen minutes
after the end of the dance. Students may be denied attendance to future dances if their ride is late.
All Colonial Forge student guests must have a valid picture ID to verify eligibility to attend a dance.
Any person currently serving a suspension or expulsion from Stafford County School District or any other school district
may not attend a dance or any other school function.
Students and guests who dance in an inappropriate, lewd and lascivious dancing manner such as “freaking” will
be asked to leave the dance and will not receive a refund of the admission fee, nor will they be eligible to attend
the next school dance. Rules for inappropriate dancing include, but are not limited to:
1.No crotch-to-crotch or crotch-to-buttocks dancing.
2.Ladies you may not raise your dress above the knees while dancing.
3.No touching or breasts, buttocks or genitals.
4.No hands on the floor.
Parents will be notified if students have been asked to leave the dance. Appropriate dancing is up to the
discretion of the chaperones and will not be debated!
Wrist Bands will be given to every student and guest to wear as they enter the prom. If a student or guest is dancing
inappropriately, he/she will receive ONE warning and the student’s or guest’s wrist band will be cut off. If a student or
guest without a wrist band is dancing inappropriately, he/she will be escorted out of the prom.
For safety reasons dancers need to avoid excessive crowding together in the center of the dance floor.
Students and Guests - Please do not leave valuables unattended.
Students are to remember that the Stafford County Schools Student Code of Conduct applies to all participants at any
after school function, including dances. Failure to comply with the rules may result in the potential loss of after-school
activities and events.

Students or guests suspected of being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol will be subject to evaluation and/
or a field sobriety test, which can include a breathalyzer test. This test will be administered by the appropriate authorities.

SEMI-FORMAL DRESS CODE - The dress requirements will be enforced at the door.
Dress standards for young men:

Tuxedo that includes: jacket and tie

Suit that includes jacket, collared dress shirt with sleeves, dress pants and tie

Shirts must remain on and tucked in for the entire dance. Ties cannot be worn around the head as they are to be
worn properly throughout the dance. Jackets may be removed after entering the prom.

Dress shoes are required. No tennis shoes.
All head coverings are to be removed when entering the dance and remain off at prom. No bandana, chains or canes
are allowed.
Dress Standards for Young Women:

Dresses must be no shorter than fingertip length.

Bare midriffs and plunging necklines are not allowed.

The back of the dress may not be lower than the natural waistline.

No see-through material which exposes thighs, excessive cleavage, or midriff.

Slits may not be higher than fingertip length.
Pantsuits must be of a formal nature (no jeans).
Lifetouch Photography will be available at the Prom. Forms may be picked up in the school’s Main Office.

Teen Poetry Contest from The Central Rappahannock Regional Library
Teens in grades 7-12 are invited to submit up to three original poems online at TeensPoint.org
between April 1st and 14th. Entries will be judged by Claudia Emerson, the winner of the 2006
Pulitzer Prize in Poetry and is currently a University of Mary Washington professor. Winners chosen

Eagle Battalion Academic All-Stars
Eighty-four Eagle Battalion cadets were recognized as JROTC Academic All-Stars for achieving academic excellence during the first semester of School Year 2012/2013. The cadets earning
Academic All- Star status earned Colonial Forge High School cumulative grade point averages
of 3.0 - 4.5, representing 40% of our total enrollment. These cadets will receive a Scholastic
Achievement Ribbon for their outstanding academic performance. The Army JROTC Academic
Achievement ribbons are depicted below for the three categories:

On Saturday, 2 Mar 13, the Eagle Battalion Drill, Raider, Leadership/Academic Teams and Color
Guard traveled to Forestville Military Academy in Forestville, MD to compete in the Regional "Best
of the Best" Competition. Please congratulate the 38 members of the battalion that represented at
the highest level against 29 of the most outstanding teams within the Mid-Atlantic Region.
Thirty of the best Army, Air Force, Marine Corps and Navy JROTC Teams competed in 13
categories (Armed/Unarmed Regulation, Drill, Armed/Unarmed Exhibition Drill, Raider Team:
1 Mile Run, Push-Ups, Sit-Ups, First Aid/Litter Carry, Rope Bridge Construction/Traverse, Land
Navigation,). In addition the Leadership/Academic Team and the Color Guard competed in their
respective categories, representing the Forge with pride and distinction.

Forestville Drill and Raider Competition/
On Saturday, 2 Mar 2013, the Eagle Battalion Drill Team, Color Guard and Raider Team traveled
to Forestville, Maryland to participate in the Forestville Military Academy Drill/Raider "Best of the
Best" Competition. Thirty (30) outstanding high schools representing Amy, Navy, Air Force and Marine
Corps programs participated in the meet. Thirty-eight Eagle Battalion cadets represented the battalion
garnering First Place in the JROTC Leadership & Academic Bowl Team (JLAB) competition and Third
Place in the Masters level Color Guard Competition. Congratulations to all the cadets for their hard work
and dedication in preparing to compete with honor. Kudos to Erica Chuang, Chantal Gruber and Mary
Sayegh who finished with the fastest female 1-Mile Run times in the Raider Competition.

On Saturday, 16 Mar 13, the Eagle Battalion Drill Team and Color Guard traveled to Century High

Eagle Battalion and Change of Command Ceremonies
On Saturday, 9 Feb 13, the Eagle Battalion conducted Change of Command and Promotion
Ceremonies for key leaders in the Chain of Command. Cadet Colonel Austin Jones transferred his
responsibilities as Battalion Commander to Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Marc Howe. The Change of
Command Ceremony was immediately followed by a Promotion Ceremony with the following cadets

Army Service Uniform
This spring the Eagle Battalion is beginning their transition from the Army Green Class A and
Class B uniforms to the Army Service Uniforms. The change over replicates the change in uniform by
Senior Army ROTC programs at colleges and universities across the nation. Army Service Uniforms will
be purchased and issued to Eagle Battalion cadets as funding becomes available and prioritized according to Leadership, Education and Training status with fourth year cadets being the highest priority.

Clubs and Organizations
Key Club : On Sat May 11, at 10 am until 1 pm, the club will sponsor a
Race Day in the courtyard/common area. This is a fund raiser. It is open
to the male children of the faculty, PTSO, and the Key Club younger siblings, ages 4-9. The cost is $30 per child. The fellas will get to make a
model race car, participate in various kinds of races, and have a healthy
lunch. This event is limited to 20 guests. Again, let Karen White know if
you would like an application.

The Spanish Club has been busy lately. The members of the club recently
celebrated Foreign Language week! To celebrate, the members of the club
watched a movie in Spanish. Last month, the club held a tertulia (social
gathering where only Spanish was spoken). The event was a huge success
because native speakers and many students in all levels of Spanish came out to
practice their Spanish. Everyone got into groups and attempted to carry out
normal conversations in Spanish. The Spanish Club is full of energetic and
outgoing people! Come and join us to see what we're all about!
The Spanish Club has had a great start to the new year! If you would still

Regular dental check-ups are something we want to encourage all parents to
maintain for your children, a well as for yourselves. Dental problems, especially
if there is discomfort involved, cause students to become unable to concentrate
on their studies and lose class time with visits to the clinic or absenteeism. In
addition, unhealthy teeth can often lead to other health issues. None of us enjoy
those trips to the dentist, but preventive dental care can often stop future
problems.
Stafford County does have a School Dental Program, and eligibility is income
based. Children in Head Start through Grade 12 may receive treatment if they
meet one of the eligibility requirements which includes Medicaid or FAMIS
insurance or a sliding fee scale through the Dental Clinic. If you would like for
your child to be enrolled in this program, they may be contacted at (540) 2882579. The Stafford Clinic has hours from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. This is a very
beneficial program which helps to maintain your child's dental health.
Another program offered by the state of Virginia is FAMIS, a health insurance
program for children under age 19. This program provides access to quality
health services for those children who do not have health insurance. As with the
Stafford County Dental program, there are certain criteria which must be met.
Brochures and information are located in the school clinic for those who are
interested.

CLINIC
As we say hello to Spring, for many of you and your children it is a welcome to
allergy season. The clinic is already seeing many students displaying the classic
symptoms: itchy, watering eyes, sneezing, congestion, running noses, and
occasionally a sore throat. A fever is not usually seen in someone displaying allergy
symptoms, and symptoms can last for several weeks. Some people with allergies
have the further complication of asthma.
Both asthma and allergy symptoms can be set off by allergens in the air (pollen,
molds, dust, etc.), hot or cold air, inhaled irritants (smoke, perfumes, strong odors),
exercise, and illness. These conditions are characterized by inflammation, causing
airways to narrow, shortness of breath, and nasal congestion. Because there is
increased mucus production in both situations, asthmatics cough and those with
allergies sniffle and constantly clear their throat.
Allergies and asthma are treated similarly in that the first line of treatment is to
identify the triggers and try to avoid what you can. The next step in treatment is
medication to lessen and/or relieve symptoms: antihistamines, decongestants, or
nasal sprays which may be purchased over the counter or prescribed. Those with
asthma also need to keep their inhalers available and know how to use them
properly. Using the inhaler prior to exercise will keep airways open and avoid
complications. With the nicer weather, PE classes will spend a lot of time outdoors,
so it is very important that your children use their inhalers appropriately and keep
them on hand. As always, we do need an order from a physician on record in the
clinic even if the student is carrying the inhaler and self-administering.
Remember, good hygiene is important and hand washing is key. Use tissues and
dispose of them properly and cough or sneeze into your arm. With proper
treatment and supportive measures, we all work to keep your child in school. Just
a reminder, though, if your child is running a fever, they must be kept at home until
they are fever free (without medication) for 24 hours. Thank you all for your

Our Mission:
Trex’s mission for the Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge is to educate students about the importance of plastic bag
recycling and keeping plastic out of the landfill.
How the Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge works:

The Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge begins at the beginning of the school year or on America Recycles Day November 15, and ends on Earth Day – April 22.

Trex provides recycling bins and a recycling poster to the school (at no cost to the school).

Trex will provide each student with a magnet which shows examples of plastics bags and plastic wraps that
can be recycled.

A school volunteer (teacher, parent or janitor) will tally how much plastic has been collected. You can do
this by counting each individual bag or by counting each full bin. The bins should be lined with a 30 gallon trash
bag. A full 30 gallon bag is approximately 1000 grocery bags and weighs 13.5 pounds.
A school volunteer will take the collected plastic to the most convenient, participating retail location.
How Winners are determined:

Winners are determined by the largest number of bags reported and collected (per capita) by Earth Day
(April 22), for your county or region.
The monthly tally should be emailed to Stephanie Hicks (shicks@trex.com) or Recycle@Trex.com.
Incentives:

Each participating school will receive a birdhouse made from Trex.
The first place winner for your county or region will receive of a bench made of Trex.

Congratulations to the Choirs of Colonial Forge
for an excellent Showing at competition this
season. The Women's Choir earned a Superior
at District Festival and the Men's, Ladies
Chorale, Madrigals and Chamber each earned
an Excellent. The Madrigals and Chamber
Choirs went on to the Hanover Festival of
Choirs and each earned a Superior.
The Show Choir won third place at both the
Central Virginia Show Choir Competition and
the Hanover Show Choir competition.
Way to go Girls!!
The choir is now working on their spring Pops

Congratulations to the Colonial Forge High School Technology Student Association!
On Saturday March 9th the Colonial Forge High School Technology Student
Association traveled to Mt. Vernon High School in Alexandria, VA to compete in the
2013 TSA Northern Regional Fair. In total, the members won (4) 1st place awards,

school's literary magazine. We want all students to submit original writing and art to :

every other Monday at 2:30 in Mr. Davis' room (325).
Recycling at CFHS
CFHS wants to adopt the slogan: Think: "Blue, Gray, Tray" as a catch
phrase to help students to remember how they should proceed in the process of recycling. Students have been told the following:
When the students get up to discard their trash, they should:
1. Go to a BLUE recycling bin----to deposit all recyclable items, especially drink containers, milk cartons, and plastics.
2. Next students should go to a GRAY trash bin----to deposit nonrecyclable items, to include used napkins/paper towels,wrappers of any
kind (candy,crackers, potato chips, etc.) DO NOT RECYCLE THESE!
3. Finally, students should take their TRAY to the designated window in
the cafeteria.
Thus, we want to begin with the above stated catch phrase. So when you
hear it, you will know that it is tired to our recycling efforts. Anything
that you can do to encourage this school wide project is greatly appreciated. Hopefully, appropriate signs and posters will be created as visual
aids for students. Your thoughts and ideas are welcomed!

Class Room Activities
The Math Department will be hosting it's annual Saturday SOL Review
Program. This program is offered by invitation only for students recommended by their math teacher. Parents and guardians of these students
should receive a letter in the mail the beginning of March inviting their
child to attend the review sessions. The five Saturday classes are April
13, April 27, May 4, May 18, and June 1 from 9:30am - 11:30am. Once
parents/guardians receive the letter they should call the school to sign
up their child for the class. Each class is capped at 30 students, therefore others will be put on a waiting list.

Learn & Serve classes. Students collected 123 pairs of socks and donated
proceeds to the organization. Over 250 community members attended the
event making it a huge success! The class would like to take everyone who
helped make this event possible.

Learn & Serve 2Y directly served the residents of Greenfield Living Center with Glam Day on March
22nd. Students painted nails, did make up and played board games with the residents. Special thanks to
Carolyn Gay and Deborah Ingrum for donating supplies! The event was a huge success.
Learn & Serve classes and community organizations from all over the county got together for Agents of
Change Day on March 23rd. Colonial Forge students distributed snow cones, popcorn and cotton candy
to participants.
Classes 4X and 1Y made displays for the event. Learn & Serve 2 student Maggie Carolan inspired her
classmates to produce the Global Girls Project which informed members of the community about the
hardships girls face in poor countries and what micro finance companies can do to help. Community
members could pledge to spread awareness, read profiles of girls who are sponsored and make paper
bead bracelets.
The 1Y class created a station for their project: "Operation Tango Hotel X-Ray" (THX = Thanks!). Members of the community could write letters to troops that were mailed to For the Troops, an organization
that distributes the letters to service members.
Special thanks goes to Marcus Johnson for representing Forge by wearing the Eagle costume!

Students of the
Month
Shannon Lowe, daughter of Susan and James Lowe, was named Student of
the Month for January at Colonial Forge High School. Shannon is an intern
at idobi Radio as a photographer and assistant to the Regional Music
Director. She has also been cover photographer for the Quantico Officers
Wives Garden Club since 2009, and is a photographer for Admit One Media,
Forever Seventeen Media and is co-owner in Lowelife Designs Store, an
online crafts store. Shannon is a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars
Ladies Auxiliary.
Shannon has received many photography awards in school, local and state
competition; and her photos have been feature in Racing Minds Magazine,
and exhibited in Photocopy Club Photography exhibitions in Brighton,
England.
She has been accepted at Virginia Commonwealth University and will major
in photography.
Kristen Steele, daughter of Mark and Joyce Steele, was named Student
of the Month for February at Colonial Forge High School, where she is a
member of the Chess, Environmental and Impact clubs; plays girls soccer
and FASA club soccer, and participates in cheerleading, drama and Learn
and Serve.
She is a member and acolyte at St. George’s Episcopal Church and is a
counselor at SOKS summer camp. Kristen hopes to attend a Virginia public
college and earn a degree in geology.
