Louis Hernandez, Jr., now CEO of Avid Technology Inc.
was Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Open
Solutions Inc., a leading provider of collaborative enterprise technology to
community based financial institutions worldwide.
Mr. Hernandez is also the author of two books and numerous articles. His
most recent book, Saving the American Dream – Main Street’s Last Stand,
explores the intimate relationship between the American Dream, American
policymaking and America’s community-based financial institutions. In it,
Mr. Hernandez explains how key government policies aimed at supporting
the American Dream have unintentionally undermined its most important
values and institutions, and outlines what must be done to restore the dream
and rebuild the American economy. His previous book, Too Small to Fail,
explained why the leaders of community-based financial institutions are ideally positioned to lead the financial
services industry back to the center of economic vitality and drive economic growth - one community at a time.
As an advocate, Mr. Hernandez speaks out passionately on the unique value of America’s community based
financial institutions and the adverse impact that recent U.S. banking regulations have had on them. He recently
inaugurated a nationwide bus tour and petition drive to Save the American Dream, promoting policy initiatives
that are less punishing to small businesses and the community-based financial institutions that support them.
Mr. Hernandez has appeared before financial industry organizations such as American Bankers Association and
the Credit Union Executive Society, and he has been a frequent guest on Fox Business, CNBC, ABC News, and
Bloomberg TV, speaking on the topics of technology, economics, strategic planning and globalization. He also
has been featured on TheStreet.com, The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and other prestigious
national and trade publications.
Mr. Hernandez is a recognized technology executive having been appointed by the Governor of Connecticut to
be vice chair of the Governor’s Council on Economic Competitiveness and Technology as a representative of
business with expertise in information technology.
Through his private foundation, Mr. Hernandez actively supports children’s issues and advances in healthcare
and education. Additionally, he is involved in a diverse range of community issues, including serving as a
member of the board of trustees of the Connecticut Science Center (a statewide cultural, entertainment and
educational institution) and a board member of the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (an organization
dedicated to improving the physical and emotional health of children). The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation named
Mr. Hernandez a Community Leader of the Year in honor of his many contributions to the community. In
addition, he was appointed the “Distinguished Business Executive” in Residence at Eastern Connecticut State
University. This appointment by the Dean and Board of Trustees of the Connecticut State University System
gives recognition to his exemplary contributions and achievements in the field of business, his contributions to
society and his commitment to inspiring others.
Mr. Hernandez is a past recipient of the Hartford Business Journal’s Business Person of the Year and has been
named one of the Hartford Business Journal's top executives under 40 and was an Ernst & Young New England
Entrepreneur of the Year finalist. He was also named one of the financial service industry’s five most
innovative leaders, an Innovator of the Year and inducted into the Leadership Hall of Fame by Bank
Technology News, a national financial services publication.

Senator Elizabeth Warren MA, a fearless
consumer advocate who has made her life's work the fight for middle class
families, was elected to the United States Senate on November 6, 2012, by
the people of Massachusetts. She won a hard fought nationally prominent
election with tremendous support from the Massachusetts credit unions and
the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts.
One of the nation's top experts on bankruptcy and the financial pressures
facing middle class families, The Boston Globe said she is "the
plainspoken voice of people getting crushed by so many predatory lenders
and under regulated banks."
Elizabeth is widely credited for the original thinking, political courage, and
relentless persistence that led to the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. President
Obama asked her to set up the new agency to hold Wall Street banks and other financial institutions
accountable, and to protect consumers from financial tricks and traps often hidden in mortgages, credit
cards and other financial products.
In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, Warren served as Chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel
for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). Her independent and tireless efforts to protect taxpayers,
to hold Wall Street accountable, and to ensure tough oversight of both the Bush and Obama
Administrations won praise from both sides of the aisle. The Boston Globe named Elizabeth Warren
Bostonian of the Year and TIME Magazine called her a "New Sheriff of Wall Street" for her oversight
efforts.
Elizabeth Ann Warren is the senior United States Senator from Massachusetts and a member of the
Democratic Party. She was previously a Harvard Law School professor specializing in bankruptcy law.
Warren is an active consumer protection advocate and her work as a policy advocate led to the conception
and establishment of the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. She has written a number of
academic and popular works, and is a frequent subject of media interviews regarding the American
economy and personal finance.
Born in Oklahoma City, Warren attended The George Washington University and the University of
Houston. She received a J.D. from Rutgers School of Law–Newark in 1976, and went on to teach law at
several universities before joining Harvard in the early 1990s.
She later served as Assistant to the President and Special Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury for the
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under President Barack Obama. In the late 2000s she was
recognized by publications such as the National Law Journal and the Time 100 as an increasingly
influential public policy figure.
In September 2011, Warren announced her candidacy for the U.S. Senate, challenging Republican
incumbent Scott Brown. She won the general election on November 6, 2012, and is the first female Senator
from Massachusetts. She was assigned to the Aging, Banking and Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions
committees.

Steven W. Rick, Senior Economist CUNA
Steven Rick is the Senior Economist for CUNA & Affiliate’s Economics & Statistics
Department. Steve has been with CUNA since January, 1992. He conducts economic
research, teaches and lectures at various credit union schools and conferences across the
country and internationally and writes articles for CUNA publications. Steve facilitates
strategic planning sessions for credit union board of directors. He has authored a textbook
on asset-liability management for credit union executives. Steve also holds a Lecturer
position at the University of Wisconsin where he teaches various courses.
Mr. Rick has a B.A. in Economics from Moorhead State University; a B.S. in Finance from Moorhead University;
and a M.S. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is also a Ph.D. candidate for a doctoral
degree in Economics at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Mr. Rick has nine years teaching experience in the following courses: macroeconomics, microeconomics, and
money and banking and the government’s role in the economy. He also has two years’ experience as a bank
simulation advisor for a computerized bank simulation game for the Prochnow Graduate School of Banking.

Buddy Gill Senior Strategic Communications and External Relations Advisor NCUA
Buddy Gill is Senior Strategic Communications and External Relations Advisor to the Chairman Debbie Matz of
the, National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). “For nearly fifteen years, Buddy has
worked directly with credit unions of all sizes, industry trade groups, federal and state
lawmakers, policymakers, the media, and other industry stakeholders on credit union issues
and continues that work at NCUA. His keen strategic sense, communication abilities, and
credit union legislative successes are well known and respected nationally.
Buddy Gill works closely with Chairman Matz and NCUA’s Public and Congressional
Affairs team to design strategic messages and execute communication initiatives. He serves
as a liaison to the credit union industry and related stakeholders, advising the chairman
regarding how regulations are working at the credit union level, and how NCUA can better help credit unions
serve their members.
Gill joins NCUA after serving seven years as the chief advocacy officer and senior vice president of the Texas
Credit Union League. Prior to that, Gill ran his own strategic communications consulting firm, with the Credit
Union National Association as a core client, and Gill was a principal strategist and architect behind the public
relations efforts to enact H.R. 1151, the Credit Union Membership Access Act of 1998, into law.

Mary Ann Clancy General Counsel and Sr. VP of Legislative
Affairs
General Counsel and Sr. VP of Legislative Affairs for the Massachusetts Credit Union
League. Mary Ann Clancy was among those inducted into the Credit Union House Hall of
Leaders this year honoring her work in the nation’s capital on behalf of credit unions.
Throughout her career at the Association she has served the credit unions of New
Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island by providing them with valuable insight into
challenging legal and regulatory issues. She has done this while planning and executing
strategies designed to advance the legislative agenda set forth by the Association.
In addition to her efforts on behalf of local credit unions she has played an important role as
a credit union legislative advocate on the national level. She has been called on to sit on many committees to
craft credit union legislation and strategies.
Daniel F. Egan, Jr., President of the Massachusetts Credit
Union League
Dan currently serves as the President of the Massachusetts Credit Union League, New
Hampshire Credit Union League and the Credit Union Association of Rhode Island.
He is a past Board member of the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), and the Filene
Research Institute, and past Chairman of the American Association of Credit Union Leagues
(AACUL) and the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC). Dan is currently a
member of the Board of America's Credit Union Museum Foundation. He is the recipient of the "Buck Levins"
Political Action Award (2002), the AACUL Eagle Award (2006), and the Eugene Farley League Leadership
Award (2011).
Dan received a Juris Doctor degree from Boston University School of Law and an undergraduate degree in
Edward A. Kelly, President Professional Fire Fighters of
Massachusetts
President Kelly is a member of the Boston Fire Department, and past President of Boston Fire
Fighters IAFF Local 718. President Kelly previously held the office of PFFM Legislative Agent,
until he was appointed interim PFFM President in early 2011. In June, at the 2011 PFFM
Biennial Convention, President Kelly was formally elected to the office of President of the
Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts.

Lee Chandler Senior Vice President Vining Sparks
Lee began his career in investments by joining Vining Sparks as a licensed representative
in 1991. Lee has worked extensively with credit unions, providing tools such as asset
liability models, scenario cash flow models, as well as on-site board education. He is a
frequent speaker at credit union conferences and makes regular board appearances for
many of his clients. He graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1988 with a
degree in business. Lee is based in Vining Sparks’ Breckenridge, Colorado
office. Vining Sparks is headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, and has offices
throughout the United States and an international office in London. The firm has over
300 employees in cities across the United States. It has over 4,400 active customers which include
depository institutions, insurance companies, and money managers. The firm also ranks in the top 20
underwriters of new U.S. Agency debt. Member FINRA/SIPC.

the CEO of AFFCU for 26
years. Currently he is a board member of Credit
Union Association of New York, Vice Chair of the
Capital Chapter of credit unions, and the Chairman
of National Coalition of Firefighter Credit

unions.
He has been President and CEO of the Boston
Firefighters C.U. since April 2002. During that
time the credit union has increased total assets
from $75M to almost $200M and increased total
loans by more than 500%.

After 35 years with the Los Angeles Fire
Department Jerry retired last year. Jerry comes
from a Firefighter Family with his Father and two
of his sons who are LAFD. He has been on the
Board of Directors Los Angeles Firemen's Credit
Union since 2002,
currently serving as
Chairman. Also on

by LAFCU to benefit

families and the
victims of disasters.
Gene Benick CEO
Newark Firemen Federal Credit Union
Gene, has been CEO of
Newark Firemen FCU for 10
years. Prior to that he held the
position of manager at FourSixteen FCU and Corporate
Controller for Millrose
Distributors. He holds a
Bachelor of Science in Commerce (Accounting
degree) from Rider University, Lawrenceville,
NJ. and is working towards a Masters of Business
Administration degree from Monmouth
University, West Long Branch, NJ. He is happily
married to Kathy of 31 years and has three grown
children and one beautiful new Granddaughter.
He serves NCOFCU as a director and holds the
position of Treasurer.

Michael McCormick Vice Chairman

Union
Michael presently serves as Vice
Chairman of the Board of
Directors for the San Diego
Firefighters Federal Credit
Union. For 8 years he served as
the Treasurer and the Chair of the
Assets and Liabilities Committee.
Michael retired as Captain after 28
years of service from the San
Diego Fire department. His fire service career
includes operational assignments in firefighting,
arson investigation, hazardous materials and
technical rescue. Michael also served 24 years in the
United States Coast Guard Reserve retiring as a
Chief Warrant Officer 4. His team served as
technical specialists in the fields of marine
firefighting, hazardous materials, EMS and the
Incident Command System. Michael is one of the
founding members of the board of directors of the
National Coalition of Firefighter Credit Unions
(NCOFCU) and holds the position of secretary. He
is a founding partner at Flex Partners, Inc. in San
Diego. Flex is an engineering services company
helping companies create new medical devices. He
is the Finance Partner and Secretary/Treasurer on
their Board. He earned his Master’s in Business
Administration and BA in Mathematics from the San
Diego State University and his AS in Fire Science
from Miramar College.
Scotty Shelton

Union
Scotty Shelton is a 28 year
veteran of the Baton Rouge Fire
Department where he is the
current Chief of Training. He has
an associate degree in fire science,
a bachelor’s degree in fire service
management and is a graduate of
the National Fire Academy’s
Executive Fire Officer Program. Scotty is
currently a member of the Board of Directors for
the Baton Rouge Fire Department Federal Credit
Union and an inaugural board member of the
National Coalition of Firefighters Credit Unions.
He is married to his wife of 27 years Melinda and
has two daughters Emily and Olivia. He is a
NCOFCU Director and serves on the Membership
committee.

as a director he completed every CU/VAP course
and has received 15 Certificates and Awards from
CUNA and the Texas Credit Union League. David
attended the University Of Houston, taking classes
in Spanish, Psychology and Texas A&M

EMT & Paramedic Certifications. He is a lifetime
member of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo,
serving on the Safety Committee for 25 years,
3 years as Chairman during which time the the
committee won “FIRST RESPONDER
ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR” for the State
of Texas, from Texas Department of Health.
He is very involved with his Church, having
served several years on the Pastoral Advisory
Board. He presently sits on the NCOFCU Board of
Directors. David is owner of 3 companies,
Pestaway Exterminating Company, Trip
Productions and J&Z Maritime Service’s.

Percy Riley Jr. Conference Scholarship Fund
The National Coalition of Firefighters Credit Unions Inc. (NCOFCU), a not for profit corporation, has
established a Scholarship fund so that all firefighter credit unions will have the opportunity to attend
NCOFCU conferences regardless of their financial condition. It is often those that cannot budget to attend
that need the education and collaboration gained at the conference for their continued success.
It is an honor to name the coalition’s conference scholarship fund,
supported by contributions from member credit unions, vendors and friends
of NCOFCU, in honor of Percy Riley Jr. who served as Chairman of the
Board Richmond Fire Department Credit Union.
Percy Riley, Jr. attended his first meeting in 2002, and every year thereafter
through October, 2007 in Albuquerque. He brought his daughter and sonin-law with him along with Wallace Garland and Glenn Grooms that
year. He was obviously ill, but he came and attended the sessions. He died November 30, 2007. Had he
been able to attend future conferences, we are certain he would have. Right from the start, he served on the
Advisory Committee and assisted in establishing the idea of a coalition and developing the conference. He
was a very kind, caring, and volunteered his time so readily, so that is why we want to honor Percy by naming
NCOFCU's conference scholarship fund the "Percy Riley Conference Scholarship Fund".
By offering these conference scholarships, NCOFCU will be moving towards their vision of to educate,
create and maintain a climate of safety, soundness, innovation and unity among firefighter credit unions in
order to promote and enhance the initiatives of the firefighter credit union movement.
Volunteer of the Year Award
The National Coalition of Firefighters Credit Unions Inc. (NCOFCU) will honor a
volunteer whose outstanding contributions, to a NCOFCU member credit union
and to the credit union movement, make him or her eligible to be the proud
recipient of the "NCOFCU Volunteer of the Year Award". This is a terrific way to
honor a volunteer who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in your credit
union. Any NCOFCU member credit union Volunteer or CEO may nominate a
candidate. Simply explain why the nominee deserves to be recognized as
Volunteer of the Year. The winner will receive free registration to the next
NCOFCU Annual Meeting & Conference as well as a beautiful plaque to display in their home or office.
Nominees must be present at the convention in October to win.

The National Coalition of Firefighters Credit Unions Inc. (NCOFCU), a not for profit, is partnering with the
San Diego Firefighters Federal Credit Union to host NCOFCU's 2014 Annual Meeting & Conference in San
Diego CA.
As in the past, this will be a gathering of CEO's and Volunteers of firefighter credit unions, primarily serving
firefighters and their families, participating in the collaboration and peer to peer networking they have always

The key aspects of this meeting will focus on the structured roundtable discussions among the attendees from

History
The National Coalition of Firefighters Credit Unions INC. (NCOFCU) was formally established and incorporated as a
"not for profit" in Miami, Florida, October 16, 2008, by representatives of 26 of the nation’s 100 identified firefighter
credit unions primarily representing firefighters. The gathering of firefighter professionals and volunteers was first
conceived by a few visionaries in 1999 and they have been meeting annually ever since.
When firefighter credit union professionals and volunteers from different parts of the country began to discover the
value of information-sharing among each other, the visionaries formed NCOFCU and held their first formal
organizational meeting in 2011 at their 10th annual conference held in New Orleans. Over the years, the vision of a
national organization has grown and is ever changing to meet the needs of the dynamic credit union movement which it
serves. It has become an all-encompassing organization for individuals (professional and volunteers) in Firefighter
Credit Unions and other entities in the firefighter credit union movement which serve over 700 thousand members and
control in excess of 9 billion of assets.
Affiliation with NCOFCU offers a unique opportunity to influence and shape the firefighter credit union movement.
NCOFCU promotes education, collaboration and personal and professional growth of its members as well as
collectively articulating concerns and advocating resources to improve firefighter credit unions and the credit union
vision.
NCOFCU supports programs that offer benefits for firefighter credit union professionals and volunteers, their credit
unions, and credit union vendor partners. The goals and objectives include expanding the collaboration between
firefighter credit unions through the use of their website, newsroom, blog, listserv, Facebook and twitter; providing
educational and informational exchange opportunities through conferences and webinars; representing firefighter credit
unions to external audiences including regulatory agencies, legislative bodies, trade associations and other publics.
Mission
The National Coalition of Firefighter Credit Unions was formed for the purpose of promoting unity, cooperation and
support among firefighter credit unions. The coalition is committed to serving its members and increasing its field of
membership to include all firefighter credit unions in the United States. We are committed to building an adequate
capital base that will support the financial strength needed to provide valuable services to our members. We will offer
services that support the safety, soundness, and innovation among firefighter credit unions in order to promote and
enhance the founding principles of the credit union movement.

Credit Unions Inc. (NCOFCU), board
of directors, executives and member
credit unions govern the organization’s
activities.
The board of directors consists of nine
voting members who are elected to
govern the organization by and from
the credit unions representing
NCOFCU’s members. Each director
serves a three-year term of office. The
board is led by the chairman, first vice
chairman, secretary and treasurer.
Directors convene at the annual general
assembly at NCOFCU’s Annual
Meeting & Conference and throughout
the year.
Executive Director/CEO
NCOFCU’s top executive is the Executive Director. Together with the executive management team, the
Executive Director manages the organization under the direction of the board of directors.
Delegates
Each member credit unions has one vote. Member credit unions appoint delegates to represent the
organization in the annual general assembly. Each associate member is entitled to one non-voting seat in the
general assembly.
