With the eye of flesh we see what we look like, with the glass eye we see what we dream. What if we teach our children to see life with these two eyes?” I think Pope Francis’ words are particularly appropriate for all of us here at Saint Anthony’s as we begin this new 2014 -2015 academic year. Each year, our students, parents, faculty, and staff face the challenges and rigors of a Saint Anthony’s education that is focused on a comprehensive academic experience in a nurturing and compassionate environment. Earlier this month, Saint Anthony’s welcomed 610 new students—the Class of 2018. Pope Francis challenges all of us when he says,“Am I tied to a herd, blindly doing what everyone does, seeking only self-satisfaction, focused on myself, or do I look above to fly high? Don’t be scared; dare to have fabulous plans. I encourage you not to be afraid to dream, to have great ideals, to be builders of hope.” This past June, Saint Anthony’s began construction on the new Science Center being built on the third floor. I am pleased to report that development efforts continue to raise the necessary funds for this $9.3 million initiative. To date, $1.5 million (45%) has been raised toward our Phase One Goal of $3.3 million. You all will be pleased to know that return on investment of a Saint Anthony’s education continues to rise as 472 of the 674 members of the Class of 2014 received scholarships totaling $78,334,266 and 135 additional students received non-need grants totaling $2,582,659 from our nation’s leading colleges and universities. So as we begin this new school year, I encourage all of you to continue on your journey to seek Truth and sincerely hope that we all dare to dream. May God Bless You! Sincerely yours in Christ, Brother Gary Cregan, O.S.F. FRIAR FOCUS 1 A Message from the Director of Development Dear Friar Faithful, Saint Anthony’s High School Franciscan Brothers Legacy Endowment Fund Over eighty years ago the Franciscan Brothers brought with them an 800 yearold Franciscan tradition of excellence in education. They founded Saint Anthony’s High School on the Franciscan principle, “Capture the heart and the mind will follow”, and as a result, Saint Anthony’s has been a leader among college preparatory schools in the United States. The Saint Anthony’s experience, “Classmates for four years – Friars Forever”, holds a special place in the hearts and minds of more than 18,000 graduates. The long-term goal of the “Legacy Endowment Fund” is to provide for the continued fiscal stability of Saint Anthony’s High School. These men and women, inspired by the vision and nurturing of the Franciscan Brothers and a dedicated and supportive corps of religious and lay faculty, have ventured on to contribute significantly to our nation through their leadership positions in government, religion, business, industry, science, the arts, education, journalism, communications, athletics and the armed forces. To make a gift by check or credit card or for all other inquiries regarding the variety of other ways you can make a gift to the “Legacy Endowment Fund” please call Don Corrao, Director of Development at 631-271-2020 ext. 284 or e-mail him at dcorrao@stanthonyshs.org. Please consider making your gift today. You can simply write a check, make a gift of appreciated securities, include Saint Anthony’s High School in your will, establish a Charitable Gift Annuity or a Charitable Remainder Trust or name Saint Anthony’s as the owner and/or beneficiary of an existing life insurance policy or as the beneficiary of a retirement account. As Director of Development for Saint Anthony’s High School, I am responsible and accountable for Saint Anthony’s fund raising programs and events. It is very important to me to hear from our constituencies - alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends regarding your thoughts on our development efforts to ensure that we are clicking on all cylinders to meet the challenges we have before us. Please know that I take my responsibilities of communicating and sharing all that we are doing to fulfill our mission as a Roman Catholic and Franciscan college preparatory school very seriously. Accordingly, I fervently hope that you enjoy receiving your copy of Friar Focus – the Development and Alumni Magazine. The immediate challenges of growing the Annual Fund and continuing to complete our Facilities Master Plan through our capital campaign efforts are paramount to the continued success and viability of Saint Anthony’s High School. In order to accomplish our goals and objectives, there must be a steady growth in the percentage of participation of our alumni and parents. Simply put, the more people help Saint Anthony’s, the stronger and better we will become. Our organizational maturity and growth in terms of innovative programs, partnerships and unique opportunities for our students is dependent on and worthy of everyone’s philanthropic support. With much gratitude and appreciation, Don Corrao Director of Development (631) 271-2020 ext. 284 dcorrao@stanthonyshs.org Values and ideals are embodied in people and are not transmitted through words, documents, bricks or mortar but through lives. Saint Anthony’s has been blessed with people whose contributions to the school and its students have been immeasurable. They continue to leave their indelible marks and enrich every student who attends Saint Anthony’s. 2 FRIAR FOCUS 09 | 2014 FRIAR FOCUS 3 4 4 FRIAR FOCUS 09 | 2014 Commencement 2014 FRIAR FOCUS 5 The Class of 2014 celebrated the culmination of four wonderful years with a beautiful Mass on June 6 followed by their Commencement Exercises the next morning. The new bleachers in the gymnasium are safer and physically-challenged accessible. 16 FRIAR FOCUS 09 | 2014 On Sunday May 4th, about 200 children with special needs along with their families attended the Friars Golden Kids Carnival at Saint Anthony’s High School. Over 300 current Saint Anthony’s students served as buddies and activity leaders for these children. Faculty and staff members, as well as the Mothers’ and Fathers’ Guilds, helped to organize and run the event. The children enjoyed jumping in the bounce house, going down the inflatable slide, and running through the obstacle course. They also loved dancing to the music, playing sports, blowing bubbles, and joining in carnival games, coloring, and face painting. Lunch was also served later in the day in the cafeteria. Saint Anthony’s looks forward to hosting its next Carnival on Sunday May 3, 2015 so please save the date! Conner Chapman ’15 Current senior Conner Chapman was the co-author last year of the children’s storybook Seven Days With Carole Carole. It tells the story of a ten-year-old Carole Robertson before she became a young icon in the Civil Rights Movement. The purpose of the book is to assist in beginning the discussion about her legacy and why she became an important part of Civil Rights history at a young age. Conner worked on the book with other members of the Suffolk County Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. where he serves as Vice-President of the Teen Group. At Saint Anthony’s he is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Football team. Congratulations to Conner on this accomplishment! To the “Retirement Class of 2014” we wish all of you the enjoyment of a healthy and happy new journey. It is with a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation that we recognize the fruits of your labor here at Saint Anthony’s. It is often said that working at Saint Anthony’s is more one’s vocation than occupation and this year’s retirees are testimony of that. At Christmas, Connor Levchuck ‘16 became a Roman Catholic and Karen Henning ‘10 a recent convert to Catholicism was his sponsor. Retirement may be an ending, a closing, but it is also an opportunity for a new beginning, a new chapter, a new song, a new dance, a new perspective, a new dream. Best wishes to all! Pictured are: Mrs. Mary Lou Gremling, Mr. Paul Kovalesky, Mrs. Joanne Motto, Mrs. Linda Phillips, Mrs. Rosemarie Walsh, Mrs. Patricia Whaley. Blessed Ceremonies Colson Meadows ‘17 recently received his First Holy Communion at Saint Anthony’s in front of our assembled student body. Xaiocheng Yang ‘16, a citizen of the Peoples Republic of China and a recent convert to Roman Catholicism was his sponsor. FRIAR FOCUS 19 This year the Saint Anthony’s High School Theatre Company performed Anything Goes, a Broadway classic with music by Cole Porter. In one of the finest productions Saint Anthony’s has seen on its stage, students wowed audiences with three outstanding nights of song, dance and comedy. A timeless show that has made several runs on Broadway, Anything Goes brings together a lively cast of characters whose stories are all intertwined. With a list of show-stopping numbers like “Blow, Gabriel Blow” and “Anything Goes”, the show kept audiences thoroughly entertained from curtain to curtain. Aboard the cruise liner, The S.S. American, all of the intertwined story lines mix together and produce a wild, comedic and heart-warming set of events. The cast was comprised of twenty-six students. It featured all grade levels and showed off the incredible depth of talent that exists in our school’s theatre program. With many featured roles and a large and important ensemble, the show provided a platform for many students to exhibit their talents. The leading role of Reno Sweeney was played masterfully by Lauren Kneessy ‘14. She showed off a vast array of skills in three perfect performances. Phillip Losquadro ’14 exhibited incredible vocal and dancing skills as Billy Crocker. Katie Fletcher ‘14 was both hilarious and pitch perfect as Mrs. Evangeline Harcourt. Frank Murdocco ’14 was excellent in his portrayal of Eli Whitney. Christian Arma ’15 had audiences rolling in the aisles with his incredible performance as Moonface Martin. Arianna Paz ‘15 stunned audiences with her portrayal of Hope Harcourt. She also served as a dance captain and helped choreograph some of the impressive tap numbers. Ian Greiner ‘15 was hilarious and showed off a wonderful English accent as Lord Evelyn Oakley. Matt Tursi ’15 exhibited a variety of skills as he not only played the role of Purser but also performed as a pit orchestra member during the show. Jake Kaplan ‘15 kept the show together in his role as the Captain. The leading roles were rounded out by Natalie Fulgieri ’17 who showed off incredible skills 20 2R F 0 I A FRRFI A ORC U FO S CU 0S 9 | 2 00 9 1| 42 0 1 4 and comedic timing as Erma. Samantha Fitzgerald ‘16 and Lindsay Palmeri ‘16 were hilarious as Luke and John, two Chinese converts who always wound up in trouble. Emily Shea ‘14, Gillian Pelkonen ’15, Sara Moreno ’17 and Samantha Sommer ‘17 wowed audiences with incredible dancing in their roles as The Angels. Completing the cast and serving in a variety of roles that featured great vocals, incredible dancing and hilarity were Nick Rudzewick ‘14, Will Barter ‘14, Eric Linero ‘14, Eric Becker ’15, Elizabeth Rains ‘15, Katelyn Piotowicz ’16, Jessica Muzii ‘17, Liana Driscoll ‘17, Marissa Chisolm ‘17 and Sydney Koehler ‘17. In addition to all of the talented students in the cast, a full fourteen-student pit orchestra performed all of the classic songs. Each night the wonderful live music was played masterfully and brought the show to life. Adding to the great success of this production was a talented and dedicated stage crew led by their two chiefs, Dorothy McGee ‘14 and Brandon Gordon ‘14. Throughout the show, many complicated scene changes were completed quickly and with incredible attention to detail. Lighting master Dan Gude ‘16 and sound masters Matt Trotta ‘16 and Madeline Mirenda ‘15 designed an impressive technical show to compliment a stunning set built by the rest of the crew. Dorothy McGee ‘14 led a large group of painters in putting finishing touches on the set and putting together beautiful advertisements that brought in large crowds for all three performances. The impressive set for this show took many weeks to put together and was a true testament to the dedication of the stage crew. In addition to the students in the cast, pit and crew, Joseph Hegyes ‘14 served as the assistant director and producer. He worked closely with the cast and production staff to ensure the show was a success. His hard work and dedication was a big reason the show was so great. His efforts will be greatly missed. With the Spring Musical being the last show of the year, it was very difficult to say goodbye to all of the seniors. Each of them was a valued member of the theatre program and will be missed greatly. All of their hard work, dedication and talent have helped the program become the success that it currently is. The Saint Anthony’s Theatre Company should be proud of the successful year it had and the entire school is looking forward to another year of wonderful performances in 2014-2015. The project was initiated by Stephen DeSimone, the Class of 2015’s Class President. Stephen worked closely with Ray Samson, the Director of Challenger Lacrosse, to invite special needs campers from all over Long Island to come to Saint Anthony’s and participate in a variety of sports including volleyball, lacrosse, soccer, basketball and baseball. Over 100 volunteers including student-athletes, faculty and coaches, and members of the Friar Faithful “buddied-up” with the Challenger Campers to take part in the fun. The experience was a great one not only for the campers but also for the volunteers! 26 FRIAR FOCUS 09 | 2014 On May 29, the Saint Anthony’s Friar Choir left to perform at the 10th Anniversary Disney Music Festival in Orlando, Florida. It has been a very busy and productive year in the Alumni Office as we continue to work on bringing our database up to date and planning activities that will bring our cherished Alumni back to their Alma Mater. A number of events were extremely successful this year – nearly 100 lacrosse players came back for the Alumni Lacrosse Game, Breakfast with Santa was very well attended by Alumni and their children, and our reunions are getting bigger and better each year. It was my sincere honor to induct Brother James McVeigh ‘64 and Mrs. Philomena Clement (Honorary Alumni) into the Alumni Hall of Fame back in March. These two people embody the Friar Spirit! On a personal note, the absolute highlight of my year was attending the Canonization of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII in Rome. I, like many Friars over the years, have had the privilege of Papal Audiences on past Friar Pilgrimages to Italy. Because of those pilgrimages and my attendance as a high school student at the Madison Square Garden Youth Rally, I have had a devotion to Pope John Paul II. I felt compelled to be in Rome for this historic moment – the Canonization of two Popes. I cannot describe to you the emotion I felt as I stood in Saint Peter’s Square and participated in the Mass that morning. The number of people, standing since pre-dawn, who attended the Mass, overwhelmed me. And, much like in the past, I had a sense of renewal of my Roman Catholic faith. It was truly a blessed moment! While in Rome, I had the pleasure of spending some time with other Friars who were also there for the Canonization: Deacon John Trodden ’64, Brother Geoffrey Clement ’82, Katie Sequino ’03 and Christopher Farrell ’04. It was a wonderful experience and one I am grateful to have had. Youngest Men’s Soccer Head Coach in the Country DJ Corrao begins his first season as the men’s soccer head coach at Assumption College in the 2014 season. He was named to the position on July 7, 2014. Corrao came to Assumption from Molloy College (N.Y.), where he served as an assistant coach for the Lions since the 2012 season. At Molloy, he was responsible for all aspects of recruiting, training and academic planning for the student-athletes while also playing a key role in community relations and fundraising for the program. In addition to his experience at Molloy, Corrao also served as the director of operations for the men’s soccer program at Adelphi University (N.Y.) for the 2010-2011 seasons as the Panthers advanced to the 2011 Atlantic Soccer Conference Championship Game. He also worked as an assistant coach and camp director at Saint Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, N.Y. and has served as the director of soccer at the Village of Branch Soccer Club in Smithtown, N.Y. since 2012. In addition to his coaching experience, Corrao was a member of the men’s soccer program at Division I Fordham University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in international political economy and development in 2011. At Fordham, he was a member of the International Honor Society of Economics, Omicron Delta Epsilon, and was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in 2010. He will earn his Master of Business Administration from Molloy College in the summer of 2014. Corrao’s appointment marks the second Saint Anthony’s alumnus to be coaching the NE 10 Conference as he joins Chris Armas ’90, head women’s soccer coach, Adelphi University. Pope Francis once said, “Dear brothers and sisters, the Church loves you! Be an active presence in the community, as living cells, as living stones.” This is a challenge to each of us to become involved, to serve others, to be a part of our Church. I would hope that not only will we all strive to be “living cells” in our Church, but also “living cells” in the Saint Anthony’s school community. It is vitally important to our current and future Friars that our school’s community and its history be sustained. I look forward to seeing each of you at sporting events, Alumni activities, or religious observances here at school over the next year. We, as a school, are only as great as the active members of our community. Friars Forever, 38 FRIAR FOCUS 09 | 2014 Denise Creighton Alumni Director FRIAR FOCUS 39 Spotlight Alumni When Danielle Ryan Davi was a student at Saint Anthony’s she spent many days and nights here at school. She was the Treasurer of the National Honor Society, a member of Tau Fraternity and writer for the Friar Scoreboard. Her leadership abilities were demonstrated as the captain of both the Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team and the Winter Track Team. Danielle made the most of her time here and it certainly had its impact. Danielle Ryan Davi ’89 EVENT: Alumni Flag Football Tournament PARTICIPANTS: Academically, Danielle always had a full load with many honors and AP classes. One of the challenges Danielle faced as a student here was balancing her very full academic schedule and her full athletic schedules. At first, this was a struggle for her but in time it became second nature. Her experience here at Saint Anthony’s prepared her for Division 1 Athletics and Ivy League academic rigor. Saint Anthony’s Football Alumni Danielle was very influenced by many of her teachers but most significantly by Science teacher Bill Payoski and Global History teacher Brother Gary Cregan. Mr. Payoski brought Biology and Marine Biology to life for his students. Danielle loved that he “was witty and sarcastic and ‘owned’ his nerdiness as a badge of honor.” She enjoyed the hands–on demos and dissections and Mr. P’s enthusiasm for his subject. Brother Gary was a trusted advisor and mentor to Danielle and many of her classmates. Danielle explained, “Brother Gary dismantled my perception of teachers as “they” and me and my fellow students as “us”. His friendship taught me that I had the capacity to be treated as an adult and to have a relationship with a teacher that went beyond academics. That served as a model on how I would choose to conduct myself especially when I myself began teaching.” Thanksgiving Eve, November 26, 2014 WHEN: LOCATION: Cy Donnelly Field, Saint Anthony’s High School Upon graduation in 1989, Danielle went on to study at Princeton University where she was a History major. She continued at NYU where she received her Masters of Arts in United States 20th Century Military History. After a short stint as an assistant buyer in advertising, Danielle found her way to Saint John’s Prep in Queens where she taught and coached the Boys’ Soccer and Track Teams. Being a young teacher, Danielle was often the person young girls would seek out when they had no one else to turn to. Sadly, unwanted pregnancy was not an uncommon occurrence. Danielle became very involved with helping not only her students, but also many young people in the NYC area who were faced with this problem. She became a very active Pro-Life advocate. However, her advocacy did not include picketing outside clinics. Danielle said, “It has been my experience within the Pro-Life aspect of the Catholic Church that for many it has become rigid belief without compassion. I am pro-life but I am anti-judgment. This doesn’t make me less of a Catholic. I believe that honesty and judgment without compassion is brutality. I have experienced time and time again people with good motives behaving without love in the name of God.” Danielle’s work as a Pro-Life activist is centered on the young woman and families who are seeking to adopt. It is a very simplistic approach and yet a clear option to the rising abortion rates in our country. Danielle assists schools and churches in finding these families in the midst of the heartbreak of infertility and encourages interaction without money exchanging hands. Danielle states, “Love is the currency and I know it sounds overly simplistic but it can and it does work.” Today, most of Danielle’s time is spent raising her three very athletic children who are 7,10 and 11. She loves watching them play lacrosse, soccer, tennis, golf, wrestling and track. She and her husband, Joe, and their three children live in Somerset County, NJ and she wonders what her children’s commute to South Huntington might be like! To our current Friars, Danielle advises, “Go out and DO! There are so many chances that present themselves each and every day. That being said everyone has a different version of accomplishment. Being the best people you can be, conquering the academic and later the business world, teaching in Appalachia or even just down the street, inventing the next best thing, playing the piano for the elderly—ANYTHING. JUST DO SOMETHING!” We are proud of Danielle and all her accomplishments! Way to go, Friar! 40 FRIAR FOCUS 09 | 2014 Come join your fellow Alumni in our first ever Thanksgiving Eve Flag Football Tournament. He was a four year hockey player, writer for the Friar Scoreboard and The Anthonian, a member of the National Honor Society and French Club President. Throughout those four years Brian learned much academically—French, History, Mathematics, Literature, Science—but learned most about himself and his Faith. Brian’s freshman French teacher, Brother Donan Conrad, had the most profound effect on Brian throughout his high school career. Interestingly, the two hit a little bump in the road when Brother Donan cut Brian from the soccer team during the summer of his sophomore year. Brian said, “I forgave him and he continued to encourage my studies and my desire to study abroad.” In his senior year Brother Donan told Brian, “Don’t be afraid to apply to the universities and colleges you want to go to. Don’t make the choice for them.” When Brian was rejected by the university of his dreams, he told me, “Don’t take Father Brian Christensen,’83, Named Vice Rector of North American College ‘No’ for an answer. Go back and tell them you really want in.” Brian took Brother’s advice and was finally accepted. Brother Donan inspired Brian through his friendship, his prayers and his constant encouragement. Father Brian was humbled and honored to celebrate Brother Donan’s Mass of Christian Burial in 2006. 48 FRIAR FOCUS 09 | 2014 Force Base in Rapid City, SD. He served as a B1-B copilot until December of 1993. While in Rapid City, Brian got very involved with his local parish. He sang in the choir, taught CCD and worked with the Knights of Columbus. He got involved with a group of men and attended Bible Study and prayer groups. His life of Faith continued to grow. His decision to become a priest was not a simple one.“After an invitation to consider the priesthood by our Bishop Charles Chaput (now the Archbishop of Philadelphia), and much mental and emotional wrestling and prayer, I came to realize that God was calling me to consider the priesthood. I decided that I should give Him a chance!” said Brian. In 1993, Father Brian began working as a parish priest in Timber Lake, South Dakota. He loves his assignment. “I love being with people in all aspects of life: family dinners, births and baptisms, sickness and death, weddings, and celebrations. As a parish priest, I have a front row seat to God’s marvelous workings of grace. It isn’t always easy or fun, but it is meaningful and fulfilling. It’s a true adventure each day. As a parish priest, it seems that I am always welcomed as part of any family. I am never an outsider. I love being with my parishioners and sharing the journey of faith.” However, Father Brian had to make another somewhat difficult decision in early 2014. He was very involved in three parish missions within his diocese and he was very content with his work. He then received an invitation to be the Vice Rector at the North American College in Rome. Brian was accepted to the US Air Force Academy where he built his selfconfidence and his faith. The various challenges of academy life deepened his faith and good friendships. Brian said, “Of all the life lessons that I learned during my four years as a cadet, the one that continues to sustain me is: faith and friends mean everything.” “With a lot of prayer and spiritual direction, I came to see where our Lord wanted me to go. I have the strong sense that He is calling me to something new and to a place and a role where I will need to trust Him and rely upon Him more than ever. As I reflect upon it, this seems to be the way our Lord works. He is often calling us in over our head and asking us to trust Him. He tells us: “Put out into the deep!” Upon graduation, Brian went on for his Master’s degree at the University of Paris. In 1989, he received an MA through Middlebury College in Vermont. Following those two years of study, he attended Pilot Training at Williams Air Force Base in Mesa, Arizona. He received his wings in 1990 and was assigned to the B1-B at Ellsworth Air Father Brian will soon be stationed in Rome but he will never forget his Alma Mater. He said of SAHS,“It is a rare place where you can find all of this and the spirituality and community that will help you establish a firm foundation for the future.” We wish Father Brian well and will remember him in our prayers. AlumniHockey Game On June 8th, 2014, the Friar Hockey Team held their Alumni Game at Superior Ice Rink in Kings Park. Coach Marc Sambach ‘73 organized the players for this annual event. After playing two periods, the guys came off the ice and enjoyed dinner together. This game is always a great opportunity for teammates to catch up and prove they’ve still got what it takes to be a Friar hockey player! If you haven’t received communications from the Hockey Club, please send your e-mail address to Coach Marc Sambach at messambach@optonline.net. Christine credits many of her teachers for her own success. She says of Mrs. Philomena Clement, “I’ll never forget reading King Lear! She had the best accent; her voice has always stayed in my mind. She has always held a classy air about herself. She would be excited about books and teaching us; it was clear her career meant the world to her, and that passion came through in her teaching.” Christine Carbone Guarino ’86 Friar Tradition Continues Christine was sad to hear of the retirement of Mr. Vincent Winus. “When I was in Saint Anthony’s, he was the coach of the baseball team and the Spanish teacher. He would always watch out for whom I was dating at the time! Mr. Winus has a sense of moral force in his character that made you feel comfortable in an almost superhero-like way. He always demonstrated leadership while having his soft side of being a great husband and animal lover. He was also the dean when my daughter Alexa was in school. Many times I found myself going to Mr. Winus for advice and every time found what I needed.“ Christine had a special relationship with Science Chair Mrs. Maryann Librizzi. “Some teachers change who you are; Mrs. Librizzi was the teacher who changed who I was. I was so in love with the subject that the experience I had in her class was merely the first hurdle--of many--in achieving my dream of being where I am today. When you believe in something and want something bad enough, there will always be many hurdles. You just have to make the jump! It’s what makes achieving your goals worth it. That class was the first of many barriers that had to be overcome in order to achieve my dream. Coincidentally, 15 years after her class, after receiving a Dental Hygiene & Anesthesia degree from SUNY Stony Brook, Mrs. Librizzi’s husband surprised me sitting in my chair needing local anesthetic! “ One teacher who remains a part of Christine’s life is Brother Gary. “Brother Gary was always, and continues to be, a man of honor. The true greatness in him is that he not only gives his life to God, but he gives his life in a way of service to the students. His existence is to serve. You can always count on his word... and he always seemed to know just what was going on, no matter the distance between generations. He can do it all. In doing all of the positive, he prevents the harmful things. Brother Gary is rich in kindness and patience, and he is a true lifelong friend to all Friars. To this day, even though I’m now an adult and a parent myself, I always feel that I can still look up to him.” Christine attended C.W. Post to study Biochemistry and later SUNY Farmingdale to study Dental Hygiene. She has been actively practicing as a Dental Hygienist for over 20 years. She is currently back at Farmingdale to expand her Dental Hygiene studies and to become a licensed Prosthetist/Orthotist. She is currently receiving certification in mastectomy fitting. Christine also created a Smoking Cessation course, which she taught in the Continuing Education program at SUNY Farmingdale. She is also currently interning with Suffolk Plastic Surgery alongside fellow Friar parent Dr. Kenneth Kneessy, an outstanding plastic surgeon. Christine is eager to help women who have been affected by breast cancer. “After knowing so many patients who have been affected by breast cancer and purchasing a prosthetics company with my husband Vincent, I came to learn that the field of prosthetics also included creating prosthetic breasts for women... and so my passion has been reignited in a new direction!” Christine credits Saint Anthony’s with much of her happiness in life. During her years as a Friar, she learned many life lessons. “Number one: never make judgments about anything; not about people, parenting, where we come from, or other’s choices. That’s not for us to judge. Love people, don’t judge people. It creates an atmosphere that other people will want to get in on. Number two: all saints were sinners who decided to get up and make something happen. Number three: If you develop the brain, the heart will follow. If you develop the heart, the brain will follow. I raise my children, have picked my career and make my choices based on these values.” 50 FRIAR FOCUS 09 | 2014 Christine and Vincent Guarino will be present at Saint Anthony’s for some time- at their children’s games, parent groups and alumni activities. He knew that he had to give back what was given to him by Spotlight athletes he works with. He remembers his commute to and from school. “Sitting on a bus for an hour in the morning and then taking the late bus home at 5:30, I was forced to be organized with my time and be proficient with its use in order to keep up with the academic demands at Saint Anthony’s.” He also remembers the very positive impact of the faculty and staff. He recalls, “…striving to meet the expectations that teachers and coaches had (and still have) for their students. The encouragement and motivation that I received helped me to realize my potential and taught me that hard work pays off. Having great role models at such an influential age taught me not to take the easy way out and helped build the work ethic that I had in college and still have today.” Like many of our faculty, Joe Minucci has been a student and a teacher here at Saint Anthony’s. Our Alumni faculty members have seen both sides of the coin. Asked what advice he would give Joe Minucci ’99 – Friar Covers Olympics Giving Back What He Was Given This winter Jack, who works as a production associate at NBC, had the time of his life covering the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia where he served as tape producer working with producers to get the right angle and shots to use on air. This summer Jack was graphic coordinator for the World Series of Volleyball. This fall and winter he will be working as a Tape PA for Notre Dame football games and various IVY and CAA games. He was also a graphic coordinator at the Ryder Cup in Scotland in September. his teachers and coaches. Although Joe was positively influenced by many, four men stick out in his mind: Coach Rich Reichert, Coach Larry Broesler, Coach Bob Hardwick and Mr. Bob Kelly. Joe said, “These four gentlemen taught me what it meant to be a leader and what hard work is. The confidence they all had in me empowered me to do more then I knew I could and helped to shape who I am today. Joe explains that the values he was taught at home were reflected at Saint Anthony’s. ”Coach Reichert, Coach Broesler and Mr. Kelly were either current or retired police officers. I think I had a connection with them because my father is a retired NYPD detective and they preached the same lessons and values that I heard at home. These gentlemen (as well as my mom because she is a retired teacher) led me to want to become a coach and educator because I watched all of them influence hundreds of kids during their tenure, and I wanted to do the same thing.” Jack Kensil is a Friar who is doing what he loves and who is living the Franciscan values of caring for those less fortunate. He is a great role model for our students. 52 After playing professional football in the AFL, Joe came back to Saint Anthony’s in 2005 to coach Varsity Football. Since 2009, Joe has served as the team’s Defensive Coordinator. Joe has also taught both Physical Education and Health. Alumni Spotlight Alumni Friar Jack Kensil ’08 was a scholar athlete during his time at Saint Anthony’s. Jack went on to study Communications and play lacrosse in the attack position at Marist College. He was a MAAC Conference All-Academic Scholar Athlete. Jack also performed in a band with some friends for many charity events throughout the Poughkeepsie area and participated in a weekly program at a children’s elementary school reading and exercising with the students, primarily the intellectually disabled. Jack found his charity work to be “very humbling and enlightening experiences.” Recently named Assistant Athletic Director Joe Minucci ’99 is truly one of our Friar Faithful. Joe and his wife Siobhan (Geerlings ‘00) met in 1997 at Saint Anthony’s. As a Friar, Joe played football, wrestled and played baseball. He was a Catholic State Champion in wrestling as a senior and an All Long Island selection in Football, as well as part of the 90’s All Decade team. Upon graduation Joe attended the University of Delaware where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Health Behavior Management with a concentration in Sports Management / Finance / Marketing and played football. He went on to get his Master’s Degree from Adelphi. Joe can relate well to the students and to current Friars, Joe responded, “Constantly keep an open mind and always keep your ears open. Much of the faculty at Saint Anthony’s is there to be a positive influence on you, and whether you want to believe it or not, we do know what we are talking about. The size of your generation rivals that of the Baby Boomer generation. You will have the ability to do great things for this country and the world. You have taken a big step in coming to Saint Anthony’s to prepare you for the future. Now do not waste your time here. Take full advantage of everything you have here at Saint Anthony’s and you will be prepared to do great things. Work hard, follow the values you hear at home and at school, and do what is right.” We are thrilled to have Joe Minucci back at Saint Anthony’s where he and his wife Siobhan hope to send their little girl Cecilia. Joe is living the Franciscan ideal of service to others and we are grateful. Kevin and two other pharmacy students traveled with Clinical Pharmacist Dr. Susanna Gim in order to bring much needed medical supplies and instruction to local nursing staff, students, pharmacists and community health workers concerning the risks of life threatening allergic reactions associated with medication use. The group also provided life saving medications to help manage reactions to various medications. The trip did have its difficulties. Kevin explains that often he and his fellow students had to keep very open minds to the differences in care that they encountered. Kevin said, “Certain diagnostic luxuries that we have in the United States are unheard of in Sierra Leone. This forces clinicians in that region to change their approach in ways that, at times, seem boldly unorthodox to us.” Ultimately, the group was able to adapt to the differing approaches and help the clinicians in their tasks. Kevin is a fine example of Friars who continue to serve those less fortunate and we are very proud of his work! He is an instrument of God’s peace. Henry Award. The award is named for Newsday sports reporter Marcus A. Henry, a man who shared his deep love for sports, but was also a staunch community leader and a dedicated journalist. Mr. Henry passed away in April. Coming off an incredible freshman year at the University of North Carolina (UNC Chapel Hill) where she played an integral role in the Tar Heels reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament in both soccer and lacrosse, Maggie Bill was named to the United States Women’s Lacrosse Team. For those who had the privilege of playing with her or watching her play while she wore the Black & Gold, her success at the collegiate level comes as no surprise. While at Saint Anthony’s she was a three-sport student athlete for most of her high school career and she led her teams to many League and State Championships. Her abilities, talent, and sense of team first served her well as she earned several All-American and Most Valuable Player honors and awards. Having earned a roster spot on the national team in June, Maggie and her teammates will begin preparing for the 2017 Senior Women’s World Cup to be held in England. Joe made his mark at Saint Anthony’s in the classroom, on the football field and on the track. A fierce competitor at every endeavor, Joe was a first team Newsday All-Long Island football selection, and was feared by opposing teams as a defensive end for the Friars. Princeton has different things in mind and hopes that Joe will wreak havoc for the Tigers as a linebacker. Last Spring, Joe’s speed and quickness paid huge dividends for the Friars as he took first place in the CHSAA League Championships in the 100, 200, and 4x100 meters. While at Saint Anthony’s Joe was also a member of the National Honor Society, played the piano in the Saint Anthony’s Band and made the time to perform countless hours of community service, most notably as a youth minister at the Bread of Life Church in Wyandanch. More important than all the awards and accolades is the fact that Joe is an extraordinary young man whose maturity is well beyond his years. He is a loving son and brother who possesses a deep faith and knows and values the importance of family. 64 FRIAR FOCUS 09 | 2014 All Americans Congratulations to the following students who have been named All-Americans in their respective sports this past school year: Kasey Behr – Lacrosse J.T.
