Quilt Angels Needed
Thank you
Blue Gate Catering
for providing volunteer
lunches!
If you are interested in helping us show off our wonderful
quilts, you may volunteer to be a Quilt Angel. You will
gently handle the quilts as a “white glove” guardian,
protecting the quilts from being touched by eager fingers,
and showing them to visitors who want to see the back or check out the details.
Working as a volunteer earns you a volunteer thank you gift. You need no special
qualifications; you just need to be a quilt lover! To volunteer, check the Quilt Angel space
on your Enrollment Form or call 877-768-1945. We must receive your form by May 1, 2015
in order to be eligible. The Shipshewana Quilt Festival will contact you with your schedule.

The Adventure: How did you get from there to here?

$19
Life is an adventure. Travel with Pam Holland
through Pennsylvania, Australia, Ireland,
South Africa, Mexico, Chile, and Argentina as
she shares how she became a quilt teacher. Sit
back and enjoy this visual explosion of color
and music as she shows you her experiences
that led her to be the acclaimed teacher/
quilter that she is.
Fearless Color, Design, and Inspiration
Malka Dubrawsky
1:30 pm
WP1
$17
In the interest of absolute honesty, Malka admits that the subtitle “Fearless Color,
Design, and Inspiration,” which accompanies the title of her second book, Fresh
Quilting, was not her verbiage. Her publisher, Interweave Press, presented it to her
as a done deal.
Despite not having coined the phrase, Malka thinks it accurately describes her work
and she hopes, after attending her lecture and viewing the more than 160 images
that illustrate it, you will agree.
Discover Malka's hand-dyed and patterned
fabric, how it is made, and what inspires it as well
as what she does with that fabric once it’s out of
the dye bath. She'll share her experiments with
improvisation, super-sizing, and crafting with
low-volume fabric. Additionally, she'll discuss
the different types of design work she's done for
a host of sewing magazines and books as well the
process of designing commercial fabric.

You have done your best work. You have made your best quilt. You have
been in the safety zone for years and suddenly it’s a bit old. Where do you
go from here? What is your inspiration and how do you recapture the
sense of creativity?
There’s no deep, dark secret to unleashing your best work. It begins with
a sense of purpose and a will to excel.

that sense of purpose and the desire to unleash your highest level of work.
Serendipity
Gudrun Erla
1:30 pm
TP1

How did a physical education teacher and trainer from
a small town in Iceland become a pattern and fabric
designer living in Minnesota? In a short amount of
time, Gudrun went from being a non-quilter to having
written and published dozens of books, hundreds of
patterns, and designed multiple fabric lines.
With her witty personality and showing samples
of her quilts and fabrics, Gudrun tells the story of
happening into quilting, starting businesses with
young children, and making life-changing decisions.
Amish, Mennonite, and Hutterite Quilts Trunk Show
Ervin Beck and Barbara Smucker
4 pm
TP2

Ervin Beck and Barbara Smucker will exhibit and interpret a variety of antique
quilts made in Amish, Mennonite, and Hutterite communities in the United States
and owned by the Mennonite Historical Library at Goshen College (Goshen, Indiana).
Each beautiful quilt is also valuable for the provenance and background story it
contributes to a historical collection. The presenters represent the Mennonite-Amish
Museum Committee at Goshen College, which sponsors two Anabaptist-related
exhibits each year.

Rules for Classroom Etiquette
The following are suggestions to help you and fellow students have a good
experience while taking classes at the Quilt Festival:
• Please turn off the sound
on all electronic devices
before classes and lectures
begin.
• Be on time. If you are late,
please quietly try to catch
up and do not expect the
instructor to start their
lesson from the beginning
just for you.
• Bring all the necessary
items required on the
materials list. Borrowing slows down your progress and the student
from whom you borrowed.
• If you want to deviate from the class project, do not expect the instructor
to take time from the rest of the students to teach you something
different.
• If after a class has started you find the class is not what you expected,
we strongly suggest you remain in the class. You may be surprised and
learn something you did not expect. Be patient.
• Do not reproduce class handouts and teach the class to your guild or at a
quilt shop without permission from the instructor.
Machine Rental
BERNINA sewing machines are available to rent for workshops if
you choose. Machines will be at the workshop location ready for
you, supplied by The Cotton Corner in Shipshewana. For details,

This class focuses on piecing simple patterns without
measuring tools. This fresh approach to piecing creates raw,
energetic blocks that are sewn together into a small quilt top.
We’ll take a traditional block and play with freehand cutting
as well as improvising variations to create a group of blocks.
Topics such as fabric
selection and methods for
piecing differently sized
blocks will be discussed.
Isn’t it fun when a project is easier than it looks? Join Kari as she
teaches about combining interesting shapes. As you work on this
project you will learn a new and a classic Creative Grids ruler.
You will also use Kari's Clearly Perfect Angles to quickly add
on-point squares. When joined together, a seldom seen octagon
shape is created. Tips, tricks, and optional embellishments will
be shared in this full-day class.
