What would happen if the world went dark and silent? Insurance companies tend to focus on their clients (rightly so). Does this mean they are neglecting their increasing reliance on technology and data and the growing risk of losing the electricity that powers them? Have insurers forgotten to protect themselves? This session is an eye-opening review of the quiet risks that, if gone unmanaged, could cripple the insurance industry. Your Speaker Ed Berko, B.Sc., MBA Senior Vice President and Chief Risk Officer The Economical Insurance Group Mr. Berko is currently Senior Vice President and Chief Risk Officer at The Economical Insurance. He has more than 25 years of enterprise risk management experience in the financial services industry. Ed is accountable for developing and maintaining comprehensive processes for identifying, assessing, measuring, monitoring, reporting and, where appropriate, reducing pertinent risks that could interfere with the company's objectives and goals. Reporting to the president and Chief Executive Officer, Ed chairs Economical’s Management Risk Committee and is a key member of the Executive Committee. He most recently served as Executive Vice President & Chief Risk Officer at Protective Life Insurance Company. Prior to that, he was Managing Director and Chief Risk Officer for MetLife’s Investments Department which manages MetLife’s $450 billion investments portfolio. Mr. Berko earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marine engineering at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, and a Masters of Business Administration in finance at The Wharton School of Business at The University of Pennsylvania. With new threats constantly evolving, planning protection against emerging threats is a daunting task. The attack against parliament in October, 2014 was successful in part due to the prevailing Canadian attitude that terrorism just occurs in other countries. At present, very few organizations, including government, have comprehensive plans to deal with potential terrorist scenarios like ‘Lone Wolf’ terrorist attacks; Active shooters; Suicide bombers; Vehicle Improvised Explosive Devices (VIED) or Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). Security forces are not properly trained in the identification of suspicious activity, nor do they understand terrorists’ standard operating procedures. This presentation will examine two scenarios from both a domestic and international perspective: Canada and Yemen. Although thousands of miles apart, they have one thing in common: both have forgotten the basic premise of planning “outside the box”. Both have adopted the classic “Deny and Repress Syndrome,” leaving themselves compromised and asking “Why were we not prepared for this situation?” Your Speaker Alan W. Bell President Globe Risk International Inc. Alan is an expert in international counterterrorism. His distinguished career includes more than 22 years of specialized military experience related to global security issues. Mr. Bell has trained close protection (i.e. bodyguard) teams for many global VIP’s and has been involved in counter-terrorist operations throughout the world. As president of Globe Risk International Inc., he is responsible for developing and directing the firm's subsidiary companies. Globe Risk International Inc., specializes in integrating crisis management and security programs to prevent, minimize, and pro-actively prepare individuals and companies for crisis / security related risks. 4 “THOSE WHO FAIL TO PLAN, PLAN TO FAIL“ THE BCM SYMPOSIUM WHEN: MONDAY MAY 11, 2015 Title: “Making Business Continuity Planning a Strategic Priority: Seven Guiding Principles” Presentation Summary Aided by recent disasters, disruptions, and increasing regulatory requirements, business continuity has gained prominence and profile. However, numerous organizations have still not moved to develop comprehensive programs, and many professionals in the field struggle with full implementation and executive level support. A main reason for this is that business continuity is too often executed in tactical level silos – without clear links to wider business objectives. By applying the seven guiding principles, leaders and practitioners can integrate business continuity as a strategic priority and bring their program to the next level. Each principle will be explored with real world examples.
