Details regarding the 2009 Legacy of Design
Awards, the annual competition recognizing the finest
interior design achievements within the Texas Chapter,
were announced Friday, February 20th via an
email blast to all practitioner members. Comprehensive
information is also available on the Legacy of Design
page on the ASID Texas website [www.asidtx.org].
Winners will be honored at the Legacy of Design
Awards Party, which will be held the evening of Friday,
August 14th, 2009 in conjunction with METROCON
Expo & Conference. (Awards celebration location
TBD at the time of writing.) Winners’ names, including
select photographs, will be listed on the public-accessible portion of the ASID Texas website throughout
the 2009-2010 ASID leadership year, and a press
release highlighting the roster of winning designers
will be sent out to a variety of local, regional, and
national publications.
The ASID Texas Chapter Board is pleased to welcome
back Media Sponsor, LUXE, The Texas Home Redefined
[www.luxemagazine.com]. ”They have Texas covered”
with three regional editions: LUXE Dallas/Ft. Worth,
LUXE Austin/San Antonio, and LUXE Houston.
LUXE will designate each winner space in a special
section within the Fall 2009 issue, which will arrive
on newsstands September 2009. This Legacy section
will appear in the Dallas/Ft. Worth edition and the
Austin/San Antonio edition, both of which land on
newsstands in outlets such as Barnes & Noble, Borders,
CVS, Whole Foods, Brookshire’s, Tom Thumb, Randalls,
Kroger, HEB, Hastings, as well as airports across the
state. In addition to the large- and medium-sized
metropolitan outlets, newsstand distribution will
include, but is not limited to, smaller municipalities
such as Allen, Arlington, Colleyville, Commerce,
Coppell, Flower Mound, Frisco, Greenville, Irving,
Leander, McKinney, Midland, Plano, Quinlan, Roanoke,
Rockwall, Southlake, and Spicewood.
In an effort to encourage even more entries, ASID
Texas is offering an array of categories, taking care
to accommodate a wide range of projects from across
the state. To alleviate feelings of intimidation, the
Chapter is continuing on with the popular RISING
STARS division. These categories are open only to
designers who have practiced design for 10 years or
less. Designers meeting the RISING STARS eligibility
have the choice of entering either section, as the
SHINING STARS categories are open to all ASID Texas
Chapter practitioner members regardless of length
of practice.
As to be more accommodating and fiscally responsible to our diverse membership, the ASID Texas
Chapter is again offering two different methods for
obtaining an entry packet: downloading and printing
PDF files off of the asidtx.org website or requesting
from the Chapter Office that an entry packet be mailed
to them. The competition will be publicized via a
mailer and multiple email blasts to all designer
members and in the Spring 2009 issue of LUXE. The
due date/time/location for submittal binders is
4:00pm on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the ASID Texas
Chapter office [1444 Oak Lawn Ave, Suite 501, Dallas,
TX 75207].
The ASID Texas Chapter is full of amazingly innovative, cleverly creative designers just bursting with
talent. From hospitality to healthcare, retail to residential, our dynamic group serves its clients well
and deserves to be noticed. We hope that members
use Legacy of Design as a marketing tool, an ego
booster, or both – as long as they take advantage of
this marvelous opportunity not only to reach potential clients in their areas, but from around the
state.
Industry Partners, take advantage of exclusive
sponsorship levels for Legacy of Design 2009. These
opportunities will allow you to get your company
name out there and focus directly on our dynamic
membership of specifiers and buyers. Please visit

Tips from Trisha Wilson on Building Opportunities
within a Changing Global Economy
“Preeminent Hospitality Designer Reveals Secrets for Success”
Trisha Wilson is the founder and Chief Executive
Officer of Wilson Associates, an interior architectural design firm based in Dallas, Texas, with offices
in New York, Los Angeles, Singapore, Shanghai,
Johannesburg and an associate office in Cochin,
India. The firm was founded in 1971 and now
employs a staff of over 350 professionals. Raised
in Dallas, Texas, Trisha Wilson is a dynamic businesswoman and an internationally acclaimed hotel
designer who has built a global empire around the
design of hotels, restaurants, clubs, casinos and
high-end residences. With annual fees exceeding $53 million, Wilson Associates
is consistently ranked as one of the two top firms in the hospitality design
industry worldwide. The firm has won a record-breaking number of design
awards during the past year and was ranked by the SMU Cox School of Business
and the Dallas Business Journal as one of the Top 100 Fastest-Growing Private
Companies in Dallas according to revenue growth over 2005-2007. How does
Wilson succeed, especially in an economy as challenging as this one?
can be attributed to us; instead, we create a custom project for each client,”
Trisha Wilson says. Research is an important part of the design process.
“Before beginning a project, our design team researches the art and
cultural influences, topography, building materials and construction capabilities that are unique to the project location. This process provides inspiration and broadens the design perspective,” she explains. Designers also
incorporate a geographical influence through the use of local craftsmen, artisans and artists. The team goes one step further with the custom design of
numerous architectural details, furniture, lighting, carpeting and fabrics.
Philanthropy
Trisha Wilson has earned the respect of her colleagues and clients because
she has built her business around a few key principles: “Create spectacular
design, give back and success will follow,” Wilson believes. She puts this
belief into practice as the Chairman and Founder of The Wilson Foundation,
a 501 (c)(3) non-profit foundation, which she established to help fund education and healthcare programs for disadvantaged children, especially in
rural South Africa, as well as in her service on numerous civic and community organizations.
Global diversity
“To take advantage of booming global economies and to geographically
serve our clients better, we opened offices in locations around the world.
This diversification helps us manage,” Wilson explains. In 2008, 10 percent
of the firm’s work was domestic and 90 percent international. Wilson Associates
is currently working on projects in 24 countries worldwide, including those
in South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Some of the key projects the company worked on in 2008 include: the Four
Seasons Hotel Pudong, Shanghai, China; Montage Deer Valley, Utah; One &
Only Mazagan, El Jadida, Morocco; Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
and Ritz-Carlton Macao, Macau, China. The firm’s high-profile projects for
2009 include: The Ritz-Carlton, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; The Lotte Hotel, Moscow,
Russia; The St. Regis Doha, Qatar; Park Hyatt Saadayat, Abu Dhabi, UAE
and the St. Regis, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The firm’s work is so widespread that it is able to provide clients with
round-the-clock service. For example, while working on the interiors for
the Venetian Macau Resort which opened in September 2007, Wilson Associates
staff worked 24 hours a day to complete the resort. There was never a moment
of the day that the site wasn’t being developed. Team members were
always present in Macau, working along with the design team at the Wilson
headquarters in Dallas.
Gratitude
“The most valuable thing I have learned is to maintain an ‘attitude of gratitude,’” says Wilson. “In a service business like ours, we are all interdependent: my colleagues need and depend on one another; we depend upon our
vendors and service providers, and our clients depend on us. I am grateful
for the teamwork, creativity and commitment of my associates and I am
grateful for the tremendous projects our clients entrust with us – projects
that take us to all corners of the world designing places of incredible beauty
and luxury.”
Respect for artistic traditions
Key to Wilson Associates’ success is its design philosophy, which encompasses an appreciation for the arts and traditions of the cultures in which the
firm works. “We design for the client, for the market. No single style or ‘look’
Sustainability
Wilson Associates is committed to integrating the principles of sustainable design into all aspects of its practice and is recognized for its commitment to green design. Wilson Associates pledges to educate all employees
and clients about sustainable design and to initiate a dialogue about environmental impact and sustainable alternatives both within the firm and with
its clients and suppliers. The firm recently formed green teams in each office
to better educate the staff on the latest eco-friendly design products/trends
and to keep the conversation flowing through its global offices.
Innovative Restaurant Design
Wilson launched BluePlate in 2007 as a specialty food & beverage
studio that focuses on creating unique and exciting restaurant concepts worldwide. The studio provides clients with a full range of F&B related services
ranging from food concepts and menu design, to tabletops and uniform design,
to kitchen planning and financial projections. With professionals in food
operations, management and culinary design, BluePlate creates a truly unique
and entertaining dining experience for each client.
Thinking beyond the box and outside of the bottom line has contributed
to Wilson Associates’ ongoing success. Trisha Wilson focuses on surrounding
herself with a team composed of “can-do” spirits! Her motto has always been
“It CAN be done!” What will be next?
Specializing in interior architectural design, Wilson Associates was founded
in 1971 and today employs more than 350 professionals in their headquarters in Dallas and offices in New York, Los Angeles, Singapore, Johannesburg,
Shanghai and an associate office in Cochin, India. The firm creates interiors
for world-class hotels, restaurants, clubs, casinos and high-end residential
projects, offering a full range of design services, from space planning to furniture installation, including custom product design. Wilson Associates is
consistently ranked as one of the top two firms in the hospitality design
industry worldwide.

What Do I Get For My Membership Dues?
Even though ASID is now allowing Practitioner members the very helpful
option to pay their dues via a monthly credit card debit instead of in one lump
sum, some members may be on the fence about renewing their membership.
At this time of year members may ask: “What do I get for my membership
dues?” We thought it might be useful to expand upon that question for the
various membership segments and have below compiled a list of some of the
key benefits. Before we get to the tangible, however, let’s think about the
intangible…
Professional organizations provide an efficient, fun way for like-minded
people to keep educating themselves, share ideas, network, and assist one
another in their career development. ASID is no different: It is a 40,000member industry support system that delivers information, provides a bevy
of opportunities, and promotes the profession in the public marketplace.
Does being a member of ASID – or any other organization, for that matter –
guarantee success? Of course it doesn’t. It merely provides you access. What
you do with that access is up to you.
Think of membership as a multi-functional gadget. If you paid a tidy sum for
this gizmo, then you would be remiss to leave it sitting in a drawer going
unused, right? You only get your money’s worth if you actually take the time
to read the directions and actually utilize the majority of the features of which
the thingamajig is capable. Taking the analogy one step further, think of ASID’s
volunteer members as part of the gadget’s development team. With absolutely
no compensation except for required travel, hundreds of members devote
thousands of hours of their valuable time to keep improving the doohickey’s
existing features, while adding even more bells and whistles for you to enjoy.
Due to their hard work and willingness to share their time and talents, you
have access to the following benefits by being a member of ASID…

Appellation Dos & Don’ts
All of us work hard for those letters, numbers and designations after our
name, and it’s confusing to understand how to use them properly, so here is
a guide to help you.
For TBAE [Texas Board of Architectural Examiners] / RIDs
[Registered Interior Designers]:
• Professional Member: John Doe, ASID
TBAE is the multi-profession regulatory agency that oversees the examination, registration, and professional regulation of architects, interior designers,
and landscape architects. Those who are RIDs in Texas pay an annual registration fee and take continuing education annually to comply with TBAE’s
requirements for registration and the ability to call oneself an Interior Designer
in the State of Texas. According to Glenn Garry, Communications Specialist
with TBAE: “There aren’t really any rules about how exactly a design professional can (or should) use his or her appellation.”
• Professional Educator Member: John Doe, ASID
Acceptable: John Doe, ASID, RID
For ASID membership:
(Find out further specifics by visiting Members section of ASID.org and clicking
on The ASID Appellation link.)
• Fellow: Jane Doe, FASID
• Allied Member: Jane Doe, Allied Member ASID
• Allied Educator Member: Jane Doe, Allied Member ASID
Incorrect: Jane Doe, ASID, Allied Member
• Industry Partner Member (Company): ABC Company, Industry Partner of
ASID
• Industry Partner Representative (Individual): Jane Doe, Industry Partner
Representative for ABC Company
• Student Member: John Doe, Student Member ASID
For those who have passed the NCIDQ [National Council
for Interior Design Qualification] Exam:
NCIDQ is not a membership association for individuals like ASID or IIDA.
Only U.S. regulatory boards and Canadian provincial associations may be
members of NCIDQ. Therefore, it is incorrect to use the acronym "NCIDQ"
after your name on any business correspondence. Furthermore, NCIDQ is
now an official registered trademark, so using the “®” symbol after NCIDQ
is now correct.
Correct: John Doe, ASID, NCIDQ® Certificate Number xxxxxx
Correct: Jane Doe, ASID
NCIDQ® Certificate No. xxxxxx
Incorrect: John Doe, ASID, NCIDQ
Incorrect: Jane Doe, ASID
NCIDQ-Certified
NOTE: If you have passed the NCIDQ Exam, you are not required to use it in
your appellation. It is merely an option.
American Society of Interior Designers

Acceptable: Jane Doe, ASID/RID
Acceptable: John Doe, ASID
Texas Registered Interior Designer
Acceptable: Jane Doe, ASID
Registered Interior Designer
*Acceptable: John Doe, ASID
Texas RID No. xxxx
*Acceptable: Jane Doe, ASID
Texas Registered Interior Designer No. xxxx
*Glenn Garry also reports: “As far as the registration number, the only real
requirements touching on that are ones having to do with traditional advertising, such as phone books, newspaper ads, Web sites, etc. Some RIDs put
the registration number in their materials (business cards, stationery, etc.),
and some don’t. I suspect that those who do are proud that they’ve earned
their stripes, but it’s not required.”
NOTE: If you are a RID, you are not required to use it in your appellation. It
is merely an option.
For members of TAID [Texas Association for Interior
Design]:
“TAID” is not an appellation. TAID is simply an association representing all
the business and legislative aspects of the interior design industry in Texas,
and anyone paying dues to and supporting the goals of TAID may be a member,
regardless of whether or not he or she is an interior designer or is even in the
design industry. If they so choose, TAID members may say that they are a
member of TAID on their business cards, letterhead, website or any other
marketing materials, but using “TAID” after one’s name is incorrect usage.
Incorrect: John Doe, ASID, TAID

STEP Toward Success
By Nicole Ferrini, Texas Chapter STEP Coordinator
What does it mean to be an interior designer? How do we distinguish
ourselves as professionals? These are questions that every young professional asks themselves as they embark on what they hope will be a long
and successful career. The answers to these questions can take many forms,
but one sure step in the right direction is passage of the NCIDQ exam. The
NCIDQ is a widely recognized trademark of professionalism in the interior
design profession. It signifies that the individual who has met this challenge
possesses the expertise and experience to serve their clients and protect the
health, safety and welfare of the public.
ASID has long supported the role that the NCIDQ exam plays in the career
of a professional interior designer. The STEP program was created to help
participants prepare for this challenge.
The STEP workshop is periodically conducted nationwide and is comprised
of 20 hours of instruction over a 2 1/2-day period. Participants have the
opportunity to experience practice exams patterned after the newest NCIDQ
and, with the guidance of experienced instructors, determine which areas
require further preparation. Workshop participants are provided with a
comprehensive workbook that includes practicum exercises and multiplechoice sections similar to those in the NCIDQ exam. These practice tests
are administered and thoroughly reviewed during the workshop. The workbook also includes helpful practice exams that participants may take home
with them.
The Texas Chapter hopes to support every individual who makes this decision to move forward with their career. We have set up a series of workshops
across the state to serve the needs of our members. This year already
we’ve had success stories in Ft. Worth and San Marcos. We have scheduled
another workshop in Dallas on February 27th through March 1st. Due to
the sweeping success and interest in the Dallas/ Ft. Worth area more workshops are currently being set up and will be ready for registration soon.
As we strive to satisfy members from across the state, workshops are being
planned for several other locations. One of our biggest challenges is finding
a location to host the workshop. If you are interested in having a workshop
in your area and know of a location willing to host, please contact Nicole
Ferrini, ASID at nicole@uncommondesign.net for more information. With
your support, we can continue to help more members take the next STEP
toward success!

Spaces Designed Remodel Combines
Classic Architecture with Modern
Design at Ridge Oak Residence
Komal Sheth of Spaces Designed recently converted a traditional Ridge
Oak house into a bright, inviting, design-driven space that is comfortable yet
sophisticated. Spanning 15 months, the 5,000-square-foot, four-bedroom,
four-and-a-half-bath remodel transformed a 1950s ranch house with French
country interiors into a modern, minimalist retreat adorned with beautiful
textures, interesting prints, and contemporary artwork.
Making extensive use of environmentally friendly materials, Komal modernized the traditional exterior by incorporating right angles and stucco and
by moving the entrance to the center of the home. The inviting front entry
showcases modern doors, a flat steel façade, and natural travertine. A water
fountain, rocks, and agave on either side of the entrance create a Zen appeal.
Komal brightened newly zoned interior entertainment spaces with natural
ambient lighting, recycled maple flooring, and light, earthen colors. Unique,
contemporary light fixtures provide further illumination, while sophisticated
combinations of bold patterns and appealing textures decorate the space.
The kitchen features a rare, earth-friendly yellow bamboo-topped island and
sustainable CaesarStone countertops. Cherry cabinets and a recycled glass
backsplash complete the cooking space.
The Ridge Oaks residence won ASID Rising Star First Place awards in the
“Entire Project” and “Living and Entry” categories and the ASID Award of
Merit in the “Entire Project” category. It is featured in the Winter 2008 issue
of Luxe magazine and online at www.purecontemporary.com.
For additional information about the Ridge Oak renovation or other Spaces
Designed projects, contact Komal Sheth or visit www.spacesdesigned.com.
Founded by Komal Sheth, Spaces Designed maintains a commitment to
creating beautiful, livable spaces that meet clients’ aesthetic, functional, and
economic goals while respecting the environment. Combining expertise in
interior design with knowledge from obtaining her real estate license, Komal
helps clients create the homes of their dreams.

lifestyle, is currently planning its 2009 editorial calendar. We are looking
to the state’s interior design community to help us make our feature
home lineup the most impressive in the state. A feature article in Texas
Home & Living is a wonderful way to showcase the benefits of working
with an interior designer, not to mention great publicity for your style
and talents. If you have a project that you’re excited about, please let
us hear from you.
While we are always interested in the state’s most extraordinary traditional, transitional, and contemporary homes, we are also looking for
homes to use in specific features. These include:
• Luxury second homes and ranches
• Waterfront homes
• Homes decorated for the holidays (to be photographed in December
2009)
• State-of-the-art kitchens
• Stylish bedrooms
• Children’s rooms and nurseries
• High-rise residences
• Outdoor spaces
Publishing your work begins with identifying the projects of which
you are most proud—homes that you feel best represent your creativity
and high standards. Next, submit photos of the project; professional
photography is preferred, but not required.
Because we work four to five months in advance of publication, it is
important that you submit your work for consideration as soon as

F
ASID Professional Member Profile: Jeannine Bazer
rom the small town of Linden, Texas (pop 2256) there came an unusual
amount of talent. Scott Joplin of jazz fame was born there, T-Bone Walker,
Don Henley of the Eagles, Don Buford of Major league baseball, and of
course Jeannine Bazer. Some forty plus years later, Jeannine has left her mark
on the interior design profession from high end residential to hospitality to
office spaces, and multi-family.
Jeannine Bazer left Linden to study Interior Design at the University of
Texas. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design, Jeannine went
to work for Roy Beal, FAID doing high end residential work in Austin Texas.
In 1964 she joined the design staff at Sanger’s, Dallas, which was one of the
training grounds for what turned out to be a plethora of independent and
contract designers of Dallas throughout the next 30 years.
Jeannine spent four years with the ageless, Lucille Payne doing high end
residential and then branched into commercial work by doing the accounting
offices of Peat Marwick (now KPMG).
Jeannine moved from Lucille Payne on to Tom Berry’s Design firm in 1972.
Berry later became a Texas Chapter President for ASID. By 1975, Jeannine
was now on the way to opening her own firm, Jeannine Bazer Interiors. Here
she focused mainly on office spaces and commercial design. Jeannine became
very involved with ASID and was a Team Jury Leader for a number of NCIDQ
examines.
At one of these, she met a designer from Champaign, IL who was to become
her mentor and partner for life, Irving Schwartz. Schwartz moved to Dallas
and became the president of ADI, the design wing of Club Corp of America.
In 1983, Jeannine and Irv wed and decided that they should strike out on
their own forming IDS-B. Here Irv took his experience in club design and
Jeannine took her training in high end residential and commercial spaces to
work on some of the country’s better Dining and Country Clubs. Many of
Dallas’ clubs have the signature of IDSB. These include Bent Tree C.C., Hackberry
Creek C.C.of Irving, and the host of the
1952 U.S. Open, Northwood Club.
Jeannine is proud to say that she and
Irv were one of the first couples to both
be ASID Fellows.
Sadly, in 2007, Irv passed away and
Jeannine eventually made the decision
to combine her talents with BGO Architects
as a Studio Partner. Here she continues
to blend her 44 plus years of training
in commercial space, residential, and club design to carve out her talent in
multi-family development.
Jeannine’s devotion to the Interior Design profession has not wavered in
her many years. She has served at the Dallas Association level as Chairman,
at the Texas Chapter level as President for two terms (1976-77), and as Secretary
at the national level in 1979. She also served on the national ASID board of
directors in 1983-1984 along with many other committees throughout the
years. In 1984 she was presented as an ASID Fellow and holds the rare title
of FASID. As one of the original founders of TAID and a prominent proponent
for Interior Design licensing Jeannine holds Texas State license number 8!
Jeannine is a jewel and shining example for those young designers who wish
to not only design, but to give back to the profession their time and energy
in the form of service and the continued education to improve the profession
they love so dearly.

ASKO Design Contest
The ASKO Design Contests have been great programs for us over the past
couple of years. We have been able to initiate and maintain communication with the design community, as well as reward some exceptional designers.
These two things will always be important to ASKO.
For any good program to be successful, it has to adapt and evolve over
time. We have heard your feedback – ranging
from distributors disliking the various
expenses to the designers not wanting to
complete a project write up. We listened to
what you have to say about this contest and
the time has come to mix things
up a bit. Therefore, in place of the
ASKO Design Contests we announce
the ASKO Picture Payout! The
ASKO Picture Payout will pay a
designer for the rights to use images
of their projects, which contain
ASKO products. Our goals with
this new program are to continue
communication with the design
communityandhelpthesedesigners
gain exposure, as well as increase
the ASKO image library.
We intend to use these wonderful
images for a variety of sales and
marketing related projects. Plus, once we have accumulated a library of
images, we are going to share the wealth with our network of distributors.
Every distributor will receive a CD with the high resolution images. These
can be used on projects ranging from looped videos on showroom floors to
sales materials. The possibilities are endless. And of course we will give credit
where it is due. Each designer(s) and distributors will receive recognition on
the CD as well on the ASKO website.
Submission is incredibly fast and easy. An entrant only needs to fill out a
brief form, as well as provide high resolution digital images. People can enter
online or mail in their projects – there is no limit to the number of times
one can enter.
Requirements
- Name
- Contact Information
- Permission to reuse images / name for any and all ASKO marketing
purposes
- Digital, high resolution images (minimum 300 DPI)
Mode of Submission
- Online entry – Entrant can still create a user profile, which allows
them to enter over and over. Simply upload photos, complete contact
information and check box to allow ASKO Appliances, Inc. to use the
images for marketing purposes. Previous profiles (usernames and
passwords) that were created for the design contest are still valid.
- Traditional mail – must include a CD with the high res images, as well as
completed form.
Dates
- Now until further notice
Cost to submit a project
- There is no cost involved – for the entrant OR distributor

The vendor representative was on hand with a slide show presentation and

Art-Right on this subsequent project.
HARDWARE
Art-Right provided art design solutions and then competitively bid and won
the rights to implement the build of the art for this project. Art-Right's consultant, Marcia Smith, worked closely with Leo A Daly designers representing
the Hilton Hotel to produce the final art design. The art solution included
commissioned originals for the entry, original pieces and commissioned metal
art pieces in strategic areas, as well as fine art prints and custom framing
throughout meeting rooms and hallways. The results were a fantastic blend
of art with the interior design creating the exact ambiance envisioned for the
newly renovated hotel.
Art-Right was founded in 2000 to streamline the process businesses use to
finish out their offices with art that fits their décor objective within their
budget parameters. The Art-Right team offers a proven, timesaving method
for selecting artwork for corporate clients. Now entering its 9th year, ArtRight values client relationships established over the past years while
expanding to reach more businesses. For further information, contact Dinah

Wilson Associates named Finalist in
Prestigious Gold Key Awards
∼Westin Hotel Guangzhou and St. Regis Singapore
Projects Honored
Two projects designed by Wilson Associates, the internationally acclaimed
interior architectural design firm, were honored as Finalists in the prestigious
Gold Key Awards for Excellence in Hospitality Design at the International
Hotel/Motel and Restaurant Show® Gold Key breakfast held on Monday,
November 10, 2008 in New York City. The Westin Hotel Guangzhou in China,
which also garnered an HD Award earlier in the year, was a Finalist for Best
Guest Room and the St. Regis Singapore was named a Finalist for Best Suite.
The coveted Gold Key Awards are the top awards presented in the hospitality
design industry and recognize the best in hospitality properties built or renovated within the past 18 months. Wilson’s projects were selected from a
record-breaking 209 entries in 21 countries and territories. Finalists were
chosen based on aesthetic appeal, practicality and functionality of design.
“We are very pleased to have received this very important recognition for
our work,” said Trisha Wilson, Founder and CEO of Wilson Associates, which
has designed and installed over 1 million guest rooms in thousands of hotels
worldwide and whose firm has been honored every year in the Gold Key
competition since it began 28 years ago. “It speaks to the success of our
design philosophy. We design for the client, for the market. Before beginning a project, the design team researches the location’s art and cultural influences, topography, building materials and construction capabilities. Designers
also incorporate a geographical influence through the use of local craftsmen,
artisans and artists. The team even goes one step further with the custom

design of numerous architectural details, furniture, lighting, carpeting and
fabrics.”
Said Show Manager Lynn White, “This years’ Gold Key competition was among
the most competitive in the award’s history. Our slate of Finalists represent
the most unique and compelling new properties around the work, and are
to be commended for the creative genius that set them apart from a
remarkable field of entrants.”
The Wilson Associates design for the Westin Hotel Guangzhou features a
contrast of light and dark spaces, a recurring theme with a contemporary
interpretation. Each space, from the guest rooms to the dining outlets, has
its own personality created through a union between innovation and local
character and tradition. The 445 award-winning guest rooms, designed to
renew and rejuvenate feature an infused warm and cool palate that offer the
guest a modern environment with design inspiration derived from nature.
The St. Regis Singapore, for which Wilson was a Finalist for Best Suite, is one
of the most high-profile new luxury hotels to open in Singapore in more than
a decade, with Wilson’s deft touch evident throughout the interiors. In keeping
with the grandeur of New York City’s St. Regis Hotel, the 38 generously proportioned suites evoke old world elegance and include crystal chandeliers, handpainted silk wall paneling, coffered ceilings and curtained beds. The Presidential
Suite includes works by Marc Chagall, Mark Tobey, Le Pho and Sam Francis.
The winning designs are published in the October issue of Interior Design
and the November issue of Hotels.
Specializing in interior architectural design, Wilson Associates was founded
in 1971 and today employs more than 350 professionals in their headquarters in Dallas and offices in New York, Los Angeles, Singapore, Johannesburg,
industry partner news
Shanghai and an associate office in Cochin, India. The firm creates interiors
for world-class hotels, restaurants, clubs, casinos and high-end residential
projects, offering a full range of design services, from space planning to furniture installation, including custom product design. Wilson Associates is
consistently ranked as one of the top two firms in the hospitality design
industry worldwide. For more information, call 214-521-6753 or visit:

Wilson Associates Point of Excellence
Awards Luncheon Raises Funds to
Benefit the Wilson Foundation
Wilson Associates, one of the nation’s top international interior architectural
design firms, held its twelfth annual Point of Excellence Awards Luncheon
at The Belo Mansion in Dallas on November 12.
TKO
Each year Wilson Associates hosts the Point of Excellence Awards Luncheon
to honor excellence in service to the design industry. Over 325 people attended
this year’s event, which recognizes vendors and service providers in the
design industry who provide exemplary service and perform above and beyond
expectations. This year the two Point of Excellence awards were presented
to Andrea Pickens of Donghia, Inc. and Art Dallas Inc.
All proceeds from the Point of Excellence Awards luncheon benefit The Wilson
Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1997 by Trisha
Wilson, Wilson Associates President and CEO. The mission of The Wilson
Foundation is to “make a difference one child at a time” by providing financial support for education and healthcare programs for disadvantaged children. In addition to helping fund education programs in the U.S., The Wilson
Foundation directs much of its support to nongovernmental organizations
(NGOs) in rural South Africa that focus on education, healthcare and other
services for at-risk children.
In 2003, The Wilson Foundation helped local community leaders establish
and build Waterberg Academy, an independent private school in Vaalwater,
and the only school of its kind in the Waterberg region. The Wilson Foundation
supports the school in many ways, including providing bursaries (scholarships) to enable underprivileged students to attend school. A focus of this
year’s luncheon program was to create awareness and interest in the launch
of a new facility at Waterberg Academy – a new Library, Science and Technology
Center. “This addition will bring Waterberg Academy to a higher level of
excellence that will help attract other qualified teachers and students from
throughout the region, as well as additional bursary students,” said Trisha
Wilson.
“We are so grateful for the incredible support of our vendors, service providers
and other friends in the design community who participate in the Point of
Excellence Awards event each year,” continued Wilson. “With their help, The
Wilson Foundation is making a difference every day in the lives of
hundreds of children in rural South Africa. These are children that most of
the world has forgotten, but we are able to make a huge impact on their lives
and give them hope for the future.”
In addition to the Point of Excellence luncheon in Dallas, Wilson Associates’
Los Angeles office hosts a similar event each year benefiting The Wilson
Foundation. The foundation also accepts gifts from individuals, corporations
and foundations.

given by our generous Industry Partners were Auctioned and Silently

d’oeuvres repast and a fabulous showroom venue for over 100 members,
industry partners and guests. Isin King chaired the party and directed
our board members as they made the evening memorable. Brian Fraley
was the Master of Ceremonies. Kudos to Isin and the Board.
The ASID Auction and Raffle $3995 proceeds were announced at the
Mark9 Search and Rescue Team’s Holiday party. The members of the
Search team will use the funds to outfit their command trailer which goes
on a moment’s notice to find lost children, Alzheimer’s victims who wander
off and to search for missing Hurricane victims. They have a generator
but need insulation, wall-mounted desk surfaces that fold down during
transport, a bulletin board for maps and a Mylar overlay to draw on without
drawing on the map underneath it. They will use satellite phones to
communicate with team members and their GPS to pinpoint the search
area. Other items donated to outfit the trailer were a file cabinet, one
task chair and the floor covering. We still need other items. Allen Hart
and Brette Jacques will continue to work on developing the needs list
so we can let the membership know what other items can be secured
through our networking resources. When the donation was announced
at the Mark9 party, a few tears flowed and they are so grateful for the
DDC’s hard work to support their mission. They are all volunteers and
are not paid to search. Know that your donations will support their efforts
to bring a family member home safely or closure in other instances.
Carpools caravanned to the Dal-Tile Factory on January 13th for a tour
and CEPH. Laura Williams, Resource Board Member, and Program Chair,
Bridget Raney, coordinated the event planning. Designers, IP’s and guests
networked before seeing the enormous facility. Box lunches were served
during the lunch and learn CEPH. Mike Ferris and Hugh Boyle of Dal-Tile
coordinated the tour day. Designers were divided into small groups and
guided through the Dallas Dal-Tile factory which makes wall tiles. Ear,
eye protection and closed toe shoes were the required attire. Dressed
to the nines in December and casually for the factory tour in January, our
members go where the fun is.
The Dallas site of the American Foundation for the Blind provided
another tour opportunity of our community resources on February 11th.
The 13,735 Sq. Ft. facility at 11030 Ables Lane houses a fully furnished
1600 Sq. Ft. model apartment which is used as a teaching tool for low
vision and blind clients who come to learn how to use both low and
high tech gadgets. People with low vision can touch the items to see how
they really work. They are shown how to cook, pick out clothing, handle
medications, read mail, pay bills and watch television. ASID interior
designers were shown how we can specify a supportive built environment for our clients who need this specialized knowledge and who need
an introduction to AFB’s community service. Eighty-three year old Dallas
resident, Esther Smith, was instrumental in bringing this center to reality
after she received the news that her sight would be lost to macular degeneration. She now leads the tours through the center for which she raised
funds. We applaud Esther for her activism that has made a positive difference in teaching living skills for aging in place to those with vision loss
in the Dallas area.
As part of our networking with other community organizations, I
attended the NKBA meeting at Westye Company on January 14th. This
event brought together the chairs of NARI, NKBA, HBA and ASID for the
first time. Cindi Cagle, ASID, presented the Interior Designer perspective as a member of the Panel Discussion on how we work together in
this economically challenging time. Helene Terry of Capital Distributing
and Kathy Hammond of Walker Zanger , ASID DDC Board Members, were
among ASID IP attendees at this meeting.
You are welcome to join us every second Tuesday of the month for
more happenings at ASID Dallas Design Community. Check out the Texas

Our September meeting was a great success. We saw many ASID El
Paso members alongside some new faces. We were also joined by some
of our friends at AIA. The presentation given by Mr. Dave Hunt was definitely an energetic one. He really engaged the audience with participatory activities, demonstrating the presentation skills he was here to speak
to us about. This was a 2-hour condensation of The HON Company’s
highly successful Presentation Skills course, which is regarded by many
as the single best course in its category, this short-form version combines
lecturing and engaging group exercises. Emphasis is placed on understanding the psychographics of clients and adapting to their differing
personalities without sacrificing personal integrity.ASID El Paso would
like to thank Brown Interior Solutions and the HON Company for sponsoring this event.
Also at the September meeting, Nicole Ferrini, ASID officially took over
as Chair of the EP DC. Local DC officers were announced at the meeting

Eco El Paso Symposium
The El Paso Design Community also recently participated in the first
annual Eco El Paso Symposium. This event was put together by a collaborative team of professional organizations including AIA, USGBC, and
CSI just to name a few. The City of El Paso, Texas Tech University and
the University of Texas at El Paso were also major supporters of the event.
Eco El Paso Symposium was an opportunity for building and development professionals to gather and discuss environmental issues relevant to the climate in our region. A variety of courses were offered ranging
from the complexities of the commissioning process to water conservation to the selection of appropriate green materials. ASID Texas was
responsible for bringing in two presentations; Victoria Schomer, of Green
Built Environments and Andor Abonyi of Interface. Victoria Schomer,
ASID, LEED AP is a part of the ASID National Distinguished Speakers
Series. She is one of the REGREEN program's authors. Using case studies,
knowledge and examples available in the REGREEN Guidelines,
Victoria presented a CEU – entitled “What Shade of Green is this Product”.
The course illustrated how to assess what makes a product really Green
– and how to identify and avoid the growing problem of "green washing."
Andor Abonyi, of Interface gave a presentation entitled “Sustainability,
It’s Only Natural”. This course offered a look at how nature is sustainable naturally and what we can learn from watching, listening, and studying
the process, products, and performance of the living organism we call
earth.
The EP DC was also very pleased to have our Chapter President
Laura McDonald-Stewart and Past President Rosemarie Rene attend
the event. We’d like to thank them for their continuing support of our
community.
2008 Community Service Project: Opportunity Center for the Homeless,
Women’s Shelter
We began this project in April of 2008 and it is almost complete. With
the tireless help of several of our local members, the Women’s Shelter
is just a few weeks away from full occupancy. Recently, Suzanne
Staley, ASID and Nicole Ferrini, ASID, set aside some time to tour the
almost complete facility. The intent behind the design was to create a
comfortable, homelike, safe haven for women in need. As evidenced
throughout the new facility, this intent has been accomplished. The wall
covering in the lounge area adds both color and textural depth to this
room intended to serve as a relaxation area for women who have been
admitted. The initial admittance area is used to process new participants
in the program. Often these participants have been outdoors for a
great length of time and are unaccustomed to the amenities of a home.
The area was designed to accomplish the function without causing women
to feel as though they are being processed. There is a definite welcoming
comfort to the space. Particularly in the restroom located off the main
entrance corridor. All of the finishes seen here were donated with the
exception of the vinyl floor tile. Participants in the program also took
ownership of this project by physically painting the interior themselves. FOR THEIR GENEROUS HELP, ASID WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE
FOLLOWING DONORS: DALTILE, ARMSTRONG FLOORING, KOROSEAL,
SHERWIN WILLIAMS
Additionally, we’d like to thank our members who spent many hours
making this project possible:

program, our DC has made it a goal to encourage these students to participate in our organization. We offer continuing support, mentoring and
encouragement to move on to an accredited 4 year program. During our
visit we spent a generous amount of time discussing what it really means
to be an interior designer. Both designers brought in samples of
current / ongoing projects to better illustrate what we do every day. There
seemed to be great interest in joining ASID from all who attended.
Shortly after our membership drive, we received news of 3 new student
members. ASID El Paso would like to welcome:
Jennifer Rodríguez, El Paso Community College
Cynthia Rubio, El Paso Community College
Victoria Gardea, El Paso Community College

El Paso Design Community Christmas Party
Coming up in December, the EP DC will be hosting a cocktail event
including members, spouses, clients and several other local movers
and shakers. The intent of this event is not only to celebrate the
season, but provide our membership with an opportunity to network with
our local leaders. Members may attend free of charge, there will be a
$15.00 admission fee for guests. Western Wholesale, an ASID Industry
Partner, will be sponsoring the event. Our community would like to thank
Sonja Scanlan of Western Wholesale for making this event possible.

What a happy occasion it was to celebrate the holidays with our
colleagues. Kathy and Rick Hopwood hosted our party in their beautiful
home and a great time was had by all as is demonstrated by the attached
photos.
The best part of the holiday event was the generosity demonstrated

by all of the Fort Worth ASID members. Everyone brought toys to be given
to the children who will be spending Christmas at Safe Haven, a shelter
for abused women and children. I had the pleasure of delivering a carload
of these surprises to the Shelter. It felt like completing the circle in 2008
of designing joyful homes and offices while honoring the health, safety
and welfare of others.
Since the Fort Worth ASID Community has a very busy meeting schedule
throughout the year, we decided to give ourselves a break during the
month of January. We will resume meetings in February, and Industry
Partners will host our spring meetings with topics as varied as lighting
issues, public art awareness, and licensing news.
