Summer, Julia and Jeffrey – a bond of skills and great affection
Summer Williams has loved, ridden and
trained horses for dressage on her parents’
small farm in Moorbel since she was a little
girl.
“I remember when I’d arrive home on the
school bus and go straight on a horse,” she
says.
And that’s what she planned when she
bought Julia, a beautiful young chestnut Andalusan mare – to train her up for dressage
and then sell her. But Julia has proved to be
such a “beautiful, clever, gentle and enjoyable” steed that Summer now can’t imagine
breaking the bond of mutual affection they
share and passing her on to someone else.
“She’s become my good mate,” she says.
And Julia has an unusual soul-mate in the
backyard stable of Summer’s house in Rodd
Street – a young palamino miniature gelding named Jeffrey, brought in to keep her
company.
The two are inseparable, whether galloping and grazing on land behind the stable, or
in an empty paddock next to my garden, or,
as they did recently, pushing my dilapidated
garden fence down to devour most of my
prized sweet corn.
I remonstrated with them. Both flatly denied it. And my own growing love for this
beautiful, affectionate mare and her little
pal, who I call “Noddy,” means I’ll be growing corn for them in the future.

To the Editor,
We strongly urge those with forms to
drop them into the confidential boxes
at The Canowindra Phoenix Office and
Billy Paul’s Carpet shop. They all have
forms to fill in and information to take,
but please remember to return them.
We are hoping to have forms delivered
to every mail box in the area soon, so
keep an eye out.
Importantly, again don’t forget to return them to the boxes or mail them
back.
We all need a bank that will serve
us face to face, and personally, with a
large percentage of the profits going
toward improving facilities we can all
appreciate.
Yours sincerely
James Isaacs

YOUR TOWN NEEDS YOU!!
The entire community and district are
aware that we desperately need a fully operational Bank to serve us all. A few from our
community have already shown support, by
pledging their enthusiasm with great ideas
of where our bank’s profits could be spent
to improve our town’s facilities. In addition,
they have pledged an amount of money towards our goal of $700,000 to make this
happen.
The Canowindra District Community Bank
wishes to thank those who have already
shown their support, by returning pledge
forms. It has been a strong start.
Meanwhile our targets are still well below
the required levels, for a feasibility study to
take place. By pledging your support, you
are showing an “expression of interest” in
forming our own bank.
We desperately need the whole community to make a pledge of support, express
where you would like to see profits spent,
and financial interest, no matter how big or
small, to help reach our target. It’s not just a
matter of money, but a show of hands from
the whole community, to get things off the
ground.

THUMBS DOWN
To those that show little pride
in our community by littering
in the Main St and on the tourist trail
down to the Swinging Bridge. What a
disgusting impression this must leave
on visitors to our beautiful town.
To those locals in broad brimmed
hats having air-conditioned utes,
cars, farm machinery and homes. Please
give a thought to sheep, cattle and horses
in treeless paddocks. They suffer in the heat
just as we do. Is it too much to ask you to
make shade with star pickets and shade cloth?
Thumbs Up Thumbs Down is your chance to have your say. Malicious or defamatory submissions will not be accepted. Contributors will not be identified.

“CANCER – What Now”
IMAGE: Inside the newly renovated Union Bank
Union Bank
Georgie and Tom Ward purchased the Union
Bank in September 2013, with a partner from
Sydney. The Union Bank was started as a
Wine Bar in 2004 and has been the epicentre
of social events in Orange since that time. It
is located in the heart of Orange and is the
Central West’s premier wine bar.
Geogie and Tom opened the Swinging
Bridge Wine Cellar in Canowindra in 2011
as part of the Finns Store complex and have
traded there as a wine cellar for just over
two years. They are currently working with
Jackie and Geoff Yeo to develop further experiences with the Wine Cellar.
Changes at the Union Bank have included
remodelling internally, by moving the serving
bar to the back of the room, which allows for
a lot more space. They have also put in large
leather lounges, and have updated the menu
as well as adding in an extensive range of lo-
cal and interstate wines.
Included in the menu are shared plates
to show the best expression of regional produce which is of such a high quality. One of
the Specialities include cidersoaked trunkey creek chorizo with Racine sourdough.
The Union Bank is open 7 days for a wine
or shared plate. Enjoy live music from 2.30
to 5.30pm on weekends. The Union Bank
also does functions that can be catered for,
which means that we can cater for groups of
15 or above, for that special occasion. We
also can cater for conferences.
Plans for the future include to deliver a
great wine and dining experience. Tom said
that this is a very different environment
from just simply growing grapes and making
wine – it has been a steep learning curve,
however an extremely enjoyable one and
Georgie and I are really loving it.
There will be a 2 hour information session @
the Cowra Ex Services Club, 101-103 Brisbane Street, Cowra on the 25th February
from 10.30am to 12.30pm; to assist those
who have recently been diagnosed with cancer and their families. The sessions provide
practical information and Q&A to reassure
those diagnosed that there is help out there.
Life can be very unpredictable, especially
when our health is affected. Certain questions are raised such as; How will I work? Will
I be able to pay the bills? What about my children? How do I deal with this and what can
I expect?
Some people may experience an emotional
rollercoaster ride and a whirlwind of financial
worry and uncertainty. Members of the NSW
Community Health Department will be present at these sessions to help in answering
all of your questions by providing practical
advice.
Topics that will be discussed include; Info
on who can help, Community organisations,
Centrelink, Home and Community care, Commonwealth Carer Respite, things to expect,
loss of appetite, fatigue and energy.
Information sessions are held every 4th
Tuesday of every month @ the Cowra Ex Services Club from 10.30am to 12.30pm
For more information on these sessions,
please contact Nancy: 6369 3381 OR Carolynn: 6340 2434

Baler Delivers for Lucerne Growers
A slice of Germany is now present in our small
town, with the popularity of the Krone Balers increasing throughout the Central West
and parts of Victoria. Doug Grant is the very
proud owner of a Krone Big Pack 1290, HighSpeed Baler that he purchased locally from
McClintocks, and suggests that it is ‘chalk n
cheese’ to any other baler he has had.
“The one I purchased is a 4 X 3 Baler and
it is just a beaut piece of machinery. It definitely doesn’t compare to balers I have had
in the past. It’s fast and very efficient due to
updated technology and simplicity”, Doug
boasted.
The Big Pack 1290 makes bales like bricks.
The high density bailing system and the longer bale chamber lead to an increase in bale
weight by up to 25% over traditional systems.
This pays for itself quickly when transporting
straw.

timate in speed and capacity is essential
to productive farming. The Krone Big Pack
1290 produces 1 bale every 28 seconds
and grabs the lucerne firmly so there is less
chance of blocking.
Krone is a German, family owned manufacturing company of modern forage harvesting equipment to the highest quality standards, and at competitive prices.
“After performing a demonstration of the
Krone Baler to a few of our local farmers,
six of them have already purchased one
just by observing its’ performance”, Richard
McLeish from McClintocks explained.
Doug and his lovely wife Vicky Grant were
lucky enough to have received two trips to
Germany for purchasing two Krone Balers
over the last 2 years.
“If you ever get the chance you should definitely go to Germany, it is so clean and is a
really beautiful place”, Doug said.

ORANGE REGION FARMERS MARKET
2ND SATURDAY OF THE MONTH
discover & taste great regional produce
The Australian Farmers’ Markets Association (AFMA) is a voluntary organization convened in 2003 to create a networking entity
committed to supporting the development
and growth of best-practice and sustainable
farmers’ markets across Australia.
AFMA also provides helpful information to
farmers seeking opportunities to sell their
fresh produce directly to consumers through
Australian farmers’ markets – and helps
shoppers to locate their nearest farmers’
market.
The Orange Region Farmers’ Market is a
predominantly fresh food market that operates monthly (on the 2nd Saturday) at the
Orange Showground, Agricultural Pavilion,
Leeds Parade (May to October), or at the
Northcourt behind Orange Visitors Centre
(November to April).
The main aims of the markets are:
• To support and stimulate the profitable
trading and business growth of independent primary producers, hobby farmers, community and home gardeners,
and associated produce value-adders.
• To provide customers with regular supplies of high quality fresh food and access to improved nutrition.
• To contribute to the economic and social
capital of the Orange community, and to
work in conjunction with the other Farmers’ Markets in the Central Ranges.

64 Years and Still
Going Strong
February the 14th will be just like any other
day for Jim Brown, of Cargo. After his morning jobs are done, Jim will travel from his
home in Cargo over to Moyne to visit his wife
of 64 years, Pearl. If his day isn’t too busy,
sometimes Jim will make the trip to visit his
adoring wife twice a day.
The Browns were married on October 1st
1949, after meeting when Pearl was just 17.
On her parent’s request, they waited until
Pearl was 21 to marry. They have since welcomed 7 children, 23 grandchildren and 14
great grandchildren into their family.
Jim puts the success of his long marriage
down to sorting out arguments straight away.
When asked what advice he would give to
newlyweds and other couples on Valentine’s
Day, Jim says “Do as much as you can together, don’t get too wild and trust each other, it’s
a very important thing.”
Just starting out on their journey together,
Adam Wild and Rachelle Traves will spend
their Valentine’s Day working together at
their business, then going out for dinner at
the restaurant where Adam proposed.
After 4 years together, the couple are looking forward to marrying this September,
saying the wedding “couldn’t come quickly
enough.”

How long have you lived in or around
Canowindra? All my life, I was born here, so
that’s about 40 years ‘roughly’.
Why did your parents move to Canowindra? My dad had a farm here and then he
bought the CRT in the 90’s.
Where do you work? Canowindra Real Estate,
I was working as a builder but I injured my back.
What do you love most about working at
the Real Estate? Dealing with the public and
the satisfaction of selling someone’s house,
and also finding someone their dream home
is good too!
How do you start your day? With a really
strong coffee!
What do you do in your spare time? Play
golf, ride horses and spend time with my family
Any qualifications? I obviously have my
Real Estate Licence, a Cert IV in Business
Management, I’m a qualified Builder, Cert III
in Financial Services (assessing). So I have a
few things under my belt!
How do you like your coffee? Skinny Latte
(strong)
What makes your day? Probably when I finish work and get to go home and sit down
and have a beer with my wife.
Valentine’s Day? Well I get out of that pretty
easy because Jacque isn’t a firm believer in
Valentine’s Day. I buy her a coffee about 3
times a week so I might just do that on Valentine’s Day too.

GREEN Thumb
GREEN THUMB by Ian Rogan
Rain dance? Praying for rain? Whatever
works for you-please do it! As I write this we
are all a little desperate for rain in our paddocks and gardens across the central west.
Keeping our gardens alive is probably the
highest priority under the current conditions
and good mulch on the soil surface is a very
important step in that direction. Lucerne hay
or pea straw mulches have always been my
favourites, but any organic matter spread
across the soil surface at 5 to 10cm depth is
better than nothing.
Colour in the garden at this time of year can
be a bit of a challenge, but if you look around
some of the district’s best gardens you’ll see
lovely floral colour from roses, dahlias, sunflowers, canna lilies, buddleias, salvias and
penstemons. Buddleias are tough and grow
well across our region but need to be given a
good prune each spring to stop them getting
woody and leggy. There are some new dwarf
forms of buddleia (growing to 1m high) that
come in a range of lovely colours from velvet
to ivory white.
Summer garden colour doesn’t just come
from flowers of course. Some deciduous
trees provide beautifully contrasting leaf
colour, even before we get to the autumn
season. In my garden, we have golden leaf
robinias and elms and purple leaf beech and
maples (crimson sentry)-their leaves provide
striking contrast to the greenery of most
other trees and shrubs at this time of year.
