Nursery Supplement Newsletter #2 Nursery 1 Possums
Nursery Supplement Newsletter #2 Nursery 1 Possums Wow, how time flies when you’re having fun in the Possums class. We have finished our inquiry of “My Friends, My Family”, and are now exploring “People Who Help Us”. We first looked at the role of a Doctor and Nurse, and how they help us when we are sick. We made Nurse hats, Doctors bags, helped our baby dolls feel better by putting bandaids on them, and painting bandages on a paper teddy bear. We also talked about being gentle with our friends, and keeping our hands to ourselves (no hitting, pushing etc). We also painted a cardboard box with white paint to make an ambulance. The children love using the box during free play – they fill it up with blankets and dolls and push it around the room, taking the dolls to the hospital. We also had a visit from our school Nurse, Ms Rini, who took our height measurements and weight. We looked at how they help us put out fires with a big hose, and how they wear special protective clothing which helps them to rescue people. We made fire truck pictures using different coloured shapes, painted flames using HOT colours (red and yellow), and made a fire truck from a cardboard box. We added a ladder, wheels, and sirens. The children love putting the firefighter hats on and using the hose to put out “fires” around the classroom. We have also been using our emergency vehicles in the construction area. Photo: Leena and her fire truck made of shapes, & Christopher painting flames We have also been enjoying a lot of sensory and creative experiences in the Possums classroom – sand play, water play, sorting different textured objects, washing dolls & play dough. The children are also developing their large muscles during PMP each Friday, and are also developing their confidence when completing activities and trying new things. Also check the Possums class on Sycamore each day for a brief description of what we enjoyed during our day at school. Miss Sheridan sheridan@australian-isb.com What a fantastic journey “Our Community” has taken us on here in N1 Platypus! We have investigated a Dr’s bag, and created our own. We have bandaged up our babies and teddy bears, and even tried some plasters on ourselves! Even though we don’t really fancy vaccinations, we did enjoy role playing with them in the Dr’s kit, especially giving them to Ms Carlie & Miss Ploy! Firefighters were also interesting for us, we loved dressing up in firefighting hats, and using our fire station. Painting fire was also fun, and making fire lava bottles was exciting too. We have moved on from community workers into a world of colour! We are very interested in mixing colours, collaging colours and making colourful water. We have been colour sorting, and matching and reading all about colours! We are now looking at the colours in our class, and will explore the ocean and its colours. Printing is also a favourite in N1 Platypus, we have enjoyed printing with our hands, and with cars, and with fly squatters! Printing is just such fun! We welcome two new students, Isaac & Isabel Saw, we look forward to becoming friends and growing with you! Ms Carlie, Miss Ploy & P’Sao Nursery 2 Cockatoos Bubbles Bubbles everywhere! We have been investigating bubbles in our water play. We have been learning how to make bubbles by blowing through a hole in a bubble wand or by splashing our hands in the water tray. We have discovered that bubbles are round, and are rainbow coloured. We have watched them float on the water and in the air. We have tried to catch them in our hands but when we do we like to pop them. We all enjoyed playing with bubbles in our water play session on Friday. We all love making bubbles. We have been busy exploring mark making using our hands and other tools. We have practiced making all different times of marks, dots, circles, straight lines, wavy lines etc. on large pieces of paper. We all enjoyed making marks on our paper with wax crayons and then painting over it with a bright coloured wash. We could still see our different coloured marks through the wash. We made lots of marks and prints in our play dough using different tools. Then we discovered we could make holes in our play dough too. We found that we could look through the holes we had made. Then we started to look for other things in our classroom that had holes. We found lots of things. We will continue investigating holes this week. We all looked outside our classroom and found many different holes. We tried to find out why they were there. You can help us to find holes at home too! Nursery 2 Tasmanian Devils Ms Kate kate@australian-isb.com - Ms Muk - September 2012 We have had some very excited and proud 3 year olds this month. A big happy birthday for Sanaa, Anek, Nesia , Ilona and Ananda. We had lots of fun singing the Happy Birthday song and watching some different Youtube videos on the computer. The children are now becoming very familiar with the classroom as well the outside play area and important parts to the school such as the dining room, music room and PMP room and the all important pick up area. This month has seen the children really grow in their interests and also their creativity. Following on from our Special you, Special me starting point of the year, we have worked both collaboratively to create artwork and independently. The baby jigsaws have produced lots of colour and design of babies while the baby rattles were created by using paint with paint brushes and then sticking on baby accessories. To further develop our gluing skills, the baby blanket was completed with many students working together to paint with foam rollers and then again sticking lots of different baby accessories onto it to create the finished blanket. During our first month the children had really enjoyed using paint to create hand prints. With this in mind the children used plaster of Paris to create a hand print and display it in a handprinted frame! They look fabulous. Towards the end of the month, we have used cars to make marks on the paper with paint and also finger painting. During our circle time we have been exploring many songs and interesting images. Songs included Hush little Baby, Miss Molly, Old Macdonald, Splish Splash, Open them, Shut Them and If you’re happy and you know it. The children love to get involved and are enjoying doing the actions to some of the songs. We have also had a look at pictures of animals and their babies and played some memory and matching games. With the fascination with animals really developing through the animals in the classroom and the activities, we have also watched animals on youtube and the noises that they make as well as a chick being born and a fun one with jazz being played to cows!! Nursery 2 Rosellas Ms Angela (angela@australia-isb.com) - Ms Karrell - P’Ede Welcome to N2 Rosellas. We would like to welcome Ms Karrell as our new Teacher Assistant. Ms Karrell has visited our class on a number of occasions in the past few weeks and the children responded well to her outgoing personality. We were happy to learn that Ms Karrell will be the ongoing Teacher Assistant in the Rosella Class from now on. We also had a visit from Mr Greg. The children had a lovely time and we hope he can come to visit again. We have now completed our Special me, Special you inquiry. During this time I have had the opportunity to make observations of the children’s interests as they explore the classroom. As you can see by the photos the children are very busy during their school day. We certainly do have a group of little explorers in our class. Many of the children have been experimenting with different types of prints using different materials and equipment. Based on these observations I will extend these interests and we will be exploring prints, shapes and colour. We will be focusing on outcomes from the Australian Early Years Learning Framework using an active learning approach to extend and develop children’s skills and understandings The children using different tools and materials to make prints Our Little Engineers Thai Time Busy in our Home Corner Making Friends Recycle Items Thank you to the families who are sending recycle items from home. They will come in very handy in the coming weeks. We would like to focus on recycle cardboard at the moment. Cylinders, cereal boxes, tea boxes, shoe boxes, tissue boxes. etc. Kind regards Angela angela@australia-isb.com
