PRESIDENT’’S REPORT March 2013
Our February gig was washed out due to flooding. I extend a special thanks to Virginia and
the team for notifying everyone of the cancellation in good time.
Feedback from the survey and Bill’s Book has been positive and encouraging. Many thanks
from the committee for all those who participated. It is obvious that members and guests
are happy with the quality and variety of the artists who perform. Condong Bowling Club is
well accepted as our new home with positive comments on the staff, level of service and the
kitchen. Also, good comments on the friendliness and helpfulness of the Jazz Club committee.
Our club, like many other Jazz Clubs, is feeling the economic pinch. Many members feel the
entry fee is too high and agreed with trialling a Sunday afternoon gig in the colder months
rather than the night gigs.
Our gig nights cost from $1,300.00 to $1,600.00 to stage, depending on the cost for the main
band. This cost includes hire of sound system, advertising, raffle prizes etc. There are also
annual costs for Public Liability Insurance, printing and postage of newsletters, support for
the Jazz Sections in the Festival of Performing Arts and the annual Combined Schools Workshops etc.
The committee has decided against reducing the entry fee at this stage as we would have
much difficulty in attracting good quality bands with such a cut to the budget. The nights we
have good attendances and good profits are when we have the more expensive bands, such as
George Washingmachine, Caxton Street and the Big Bands.
As a result of your feedback, the committee has decided to trial a Sunday afternoon gig on
September 1st which will replace the night gig on August 30th. Condong Bowling Club will join
us to run the gig on a trial basis. There will be 2 bands - Lez Karski with a blues band, followed by Lucky Star with a jazz band. Music styles will include blues, jazz, country and rock ideal for a dance and a toe tap.

The Wollumbin High School Band formed in
2010 and have performed at Cooly Rocks On,
Jack Evans Boat Harbour & received first
place at last year’s Murwillumbah Performing
Arts Festival. Their teacher & Band Director
Mr. Robby Cenda gathered this fine bunch of
young musicians to learn, play & perform a wide
variety of contemporary tunes. This fresh new talented 30 piece big band has
trumpets, trombones, saxophones, clarinets, guitars, piano, bass & drums.
They also feature a dynamite front line of wonderful singers. The Wollumbin
High School Band is guaranteed to rock your socks off!
Right Left of Centre is a musical relationship driven by 3 young musicians
out of Brisbane. The size of the
group and the genre often change, but
at the heart lie 3 tenants: intimacy,
passion and courage. This unique jazz
club gig will feature swinging standards, sultry bossas and heartfelt
ballads. The band is comprised of
vocalist Kelsey Giarole and local lads
Luke Patrick on guitar and Aidan Arnold on bass. The night will also feature a
third Murwillumbah local, Gene Stevens on drums.

Les Wilson’s Swing Force Big Band has emerged as a bright & energetic
band of Swing sound with talented musicians. The band has been formed
out of enthusiastic musicians & their love for Swing sound and public demand for the “peoples” music. Performing music from the great swing
bands including Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and songs made
famous by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Dean Martin, Natalie
Cole, Bobby Darin plus many others. Their professionalism comes to the
fore with their presentation of swing hits from the past, combined with
updated arrangements of present day numbers. This is not a band of many
stars, it is a STAR BAND.
