In fact, many of you have been begging us to compile, categorize, and index the past six years of articles so you can have a complete guide in one place. Your wait is over. You now have The Official Unofficial Guide to Using Legacy Family Tree: Plus Research Advice, News, Views, and Technology Tips at your fingertips. There are some books that are meant for the coffee table, but this book belongs with you at your computer. From the very first page you will notice that this book is much more than a boring instructional manual – it is full of real-life examples that not only teach you the right buttons to push, but it thoroughly explains how to get the most out of your favorite genealogy software program – Legacy Family Tree. You will also learn about the latest genealogy technologies, methods of organizing your paper files, and read inspirational stories that can help lead you to one Genealogy Happy Dance after another. On a personal note, after graduating with my genealogy degree I thought my days of endless writing were finally over. Little did I know how much I would enjoy writing these articles for our Legacy News blog. Each article in this book includes a link back to the original article on the blog so you can read all of the comments left by others, or add your own. So if you are ready to take your genealogy to the next level, go ahead…turn the page….and by the way…life is short – do genealogy first! The Official Unofficial Guide to Using Legacy Family Tree “No ancestors were killed, murdered, or otherwise harmed during the writing of this article.” ~8~ Legacy Tips: Data Entry 101, 202, and 303 Data Entry 101, 202, and 303 LEGACY TIPS Same Couple, married 4 times Robert asked a great question in our Legacy User Group mailing list today: How do you properly indicate in Legacy that the same couple married each other FOUR times? Just do this? • • • • • • • • • Married Jun 10, 1934 Divorced Oct 2, 1941 Married Jan 15, 1943 Divorced Feb 20, 1946 Married Mar 13, 1948 Divorced April 23, 1953 (husband left wife, and wife thought husband had died) Married July 10, 1955 Husband died Oct 12, 1960 Wife died Dec 19, 1974 Couldn't make up their minds, eh? This is a new one for me, Robert, but this would be my suggestion. The image below is the Marriage Information screen for John Smith and Mary Jones (a fictitious couple I just created to demonstrate this example). In the Marriage Date field, I entered the date of their first marriage. Typically, when a couple divorces, I add "Divorced" to the status field and add the date to the Status Date field. However, in this case, I entered the three divorces and three remarriages as events by clicking on the Add button. When you look at the updated Chronology View for each individual, these events are displayed there too. Without having faced this situation previously, I can't really think of any downsides, or even any other good alternatives to this method of recording. ~9~ The Official Unofficial Guide to Using Legacy Family Tree Posted on July 6, 2011 | http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2011/07/legacy-tipsame-couple-married-4-times.html How to Display Conflicting Information I've just discovered a great new tool - in Legacy Family Tree - to help me with conflicting information. Well, I've always known about the tool, but I had a new idea about how to use it today. But first, have you ever discovered information in a document that conflicts with information you already know about an ancestor? One of my ancestors, John Williams, was born in 1845, 1851, 1852, 1853, or 1854, depending on which document I look at. Just today, as I was evaluating a different ancestor, I remembered that Clarinda Williams was thought to be born in either Boston, Massachusetts or in New Hampshire. However, I often forget about the New Hampshire possibility because when viewing her information in the Family View, it only shows me the main birth information. See below: ~ 10 ~ Legacy Tips: Data Entry 101, 202, and 303 I guess this is one reason why using the Chronology View is so much more valuable when analyzing an ancestor. However, because the five labels (Born, Chr, Died, Buried, DthCau) in the Family View are customizable, we can make our analysis a bit easier, even when you are in the Family View. If you follow these steps, you can view the conflicting data: 1. Click on one of the 5 labels. 2. Click on one of the buttons with the three dots to replace the current field name (I selected the Christening Date/Place in this example), and select the "Event..." field. 3. Next, select the "Alt. Birth" event and click Select. 4. Click Close. ~ 11 ~ The Official Unofficial Guide to Using Legacy Family Tree See the difference: We are now able to see the main birth event of "abt 1853 in Boston..." AND we can see the conflicting birth event of "abt 1852 in New Hampshire". This aids as a simple reminder that there is more than one place I could be looking for evidence of her birth. The conflicting information will only appear as I've described above if you actually record the conflicting data as an "Alt. Birth" event. So while locating conflicting information will never go away, Legacy Family Tree provides tools to help us with it all. Posted on June 23, 2011 | http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2011/06/legacy-tiphow-to-display-conflicting-information.html ~ 12 ~ Legacy Tips: Data Entry 101, 202, and 303 How to change the wording for a non-marriage If an ancestral couple had children, but were not married, you certainly do not want your books and reports to use the default wording of "John married Mary...". Here's the work-around. Open the Marriage Information screen. There's a few fields and checkboxes here that you can adjust such as the Status field and the This couple did not marry checkbox. You can even modify each person's married name in the Married Names section. To modify the wording of the husband/wife and married phrases, click on the Wording Options tab in the upper left. In the example above, you can change the Family View labels from Husband and Wife to something that might make more sense for this couple. Change them to Father and Mother. Now, in the Family View (and maybe other places too) they will be listed as Father and Mother instead of Husband and Wife. ~ 13 ~ The Official Unofficial Guide to Using Legacy Family Tree In the Report Phrases section, you can change the "married" phrase to something more appropriate such as: • • • was really good friends with knew had children with That's the power of Legacy - you make the decision. Note - when you change the wording for this couple, it only changes the wording for this couple - not for anyone else. See below for the changes to the Husband/wife labels in the Family View. This is so ... much ... fun!” ~ 190 ~ News and Views NEWS AND VIEWS "But I thought genealogy was boring..." I hope every genealogist gets to experience what I did this week. It all started two weeks ago when I located Albert Brown's death information in an online death index. I then asked my sister if she would obtain a copy of the certificate from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Her answer was no. I guess I shouldn't have asked her then because we were leaving for our family reunion in Yellowstone National Park the next day. So I had to wait until our reunion was over. I guess it would be good to spend time with my living relatives for a few days. Last Saturday the reunion ended, and if it weren't for the bison traffic jam heading out of Yellowstone, we would have made better time leaving (it's a 19 hour drive home). Lucky for me, Salt Lake City was on the way home, so of course we stopped at the Family History Library. I told my wife that I wouldn't be long - I just wanted to get a copy of Albert's death certificate which should only take a few minutes. To my delight, my 11-year-old, Evan, wanted to come with. He and I located the film and I showed him how to use the microfilm reader. Since I already had the index information, I suspected it would be pretty easy to locate the certificate so I showed him where to look for the correct certificate number. This is Evan using a microfilm reader for the first time. ~ 191 ~ The Official Unofficial Guide to Using Legacy Family Tree This is Evan as he located the certificate we were seeking: I explained to him that he just found a brand new ancestor. His excitement grew as I showed him that he just found Albert's parents. In his burst of emotion he said, "Dad, I thought genealogy was boring. This is so ... much ... fun!" Using my digital camera, I let him take the photo of the certificate (way faster and cheaper than making a paper copy). We put the film back and on the way out Evan stopped me and asked, "Dad, isn't there anyone else we could look for?" Recognizing that a new genealogist was being born, but still aware that my wife and three other kids were waiting for us, I brought Evan to the computers and did a search in the same database (Washington state Death Index) and located the index entry for one of Albert's children - Wilbur. With the little research I had done of the family previously, I recognized that Wilbur did in fact belong to the family but I had not yet recorded anything of his existence. So we pulled the microfilm and Evan quickly located Wilbur's death certificate. This was truly original research ~ 192 ~ News and Views my 11-year-old just found an ancestor that nobody else had. All along he asked questions like, "how do we know that this is the right person?" He was anxious to know how Albert and Wilbur fit into the family. Fast forward three days to this morning at 8:00. Before I invited Evan into my office (yes, it's a mess...) I did a little preparation by adding the death certificate information to my source clipboard. Then I invited him to sit in my chair which I think surprised him a bit. With Legacy open we navigated to Albert Brown where I showed my son how they were both related. I opened up Legacy Charting to help him visualize it better. Then, with Legacy open on my left monitor (28" wide-screen - everyone should have one...or two) and the death certificate image open on my right monitor, I taught Evan how to type in the new information. Of course I showed him how to use the source clipboard, for there is no truth without proof. Next, I opened Wilbur Brown's death certificate and asked Evan, "if you want to add a brand new person, which button do you think you should click on?" He looked around and decided that the "Add" button might do the job. Now, without my instruction, he added Wilbur Brown as a new child to Albert (and Emily), analyzed the death certificate and entered the new details (name, birth, and death). I was so proud of him, and equally as proud that Legacy Family Tree made it easy for him to do it all. Dealing with information overload is handled through systematic organization of materials. Most researchers have tried numerous systems for organizing. There is not one system that works for everyone. We will feature several systems in this newsletter. If you have a method that works well for you, please let us know. And this time, genealogists will be dancing with excitement. After viewing the new Historical Imagery video for the newly-released Google Earth 6, I can't wait to start using these new tools. In Google Earth 6, you can travel back in time to see imagery from previous years. I wonder if I can see what Asa Clark Brown's 1848 Pennsylvania home looked like before it burned. Probably not, but I will give it a try. You can download Google Earth 6 at http://earth.google.com/. Posted on December 1, 2010 | http://news.legacyfamilytree.com/legacy_news/2010/12/google-earth-6-now-availablefree.html Windows 7 taskbar shortcuts This quick technology tip will help you use your mouse a lot less. In Windows 7, the long bar at the very bottom of your screen is called the taskbar. It is made up of three parts: 1. the "Start" button (which no longer says "start" like previous versions of Windows) which opens the Start menu 2. the middle section, which shows you which programs and files you have open and allows you to quickly switch between them 3. the notification area, which includes a clock and other icons Below is what I see on my monitor. The red arrow is pointing to the middle section of the taskbar. Here I have several buttons, that when clicked, launch a specific program. For example, the first button opens Internet Explorer. The second opens Legacy 7. The third opens my photo editing/management software. And so on. Having these "shortcuts" easily accessible to me saves me the "hassle" of going to Start > All Programs and selecting my program from a long list. ~ 239 ~ Technology Tips Restoring Old Photographs With today's technology, not much really surprises me anymore. However, as I am writing this, I am nearly stunned at what I am looking at. I have a brittle, old photograph of my 3rd great-grandfather, David Brown (there I go again talking about my Browns...). Time has faded and cracked the photo. Many years ago I scanned/digitized the photo to preserve its current state. I really did not think there was much hope in ever restoring the photo to my satisfaction. When Miles Abernathy (of 399Retouch.com and a fellow genealogist) offered to touch up one of my worst photos I knew exactly the one to send him. Less than a day later he emailed me the results. And here I sit, still comparing the differences, stunned. Here are the before and afters: Remarkable, isn't it? While I've never claimed to be a photo restoration expert, I know enough to do some good things with photos. Seeing what Miles did for David's photo gives me a greater appreciation for the experts out there. The experts certainly make use of the photo editing software's "Clone" tool. Four years ago my son scored his first-ever goal for his soccer team. Of course we were all excited, and I even happened to get a picture of his reaction immediately afterwards. Also a part of the picture was another person, whom we've nick-named "Muscle-Man". While I'm sure he's a great person, I didn't want him to be a part of this picture. Using the "Clone" tool it was pretty ~ 243 ~ Index INDEX ~ .............................................................................35 1/2 children
