MAY 2016 - Gull Lake Community Schools
The Richland Elementary Reporter Where students are-RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, AND SAFE Our Mission Statement Richland Elementary will provide a safe, creative, and positive learning environment for life-long skills May 1, 2016 Library Books—All library books need to be returned to the library by June 3, 2016. Check your closets and under beds for stray books! Bills will be issued after inventory for lost books. The library will be closed for inventory starting May 30, 2016. National Teacher Appreciation Week—During the week of May 2, we will be observing Teacher Appreciation Week. PTO—The Richland PTO meeting will be on May 13 at 9:00 a.m. in the Conference Room. Please come join us! Memorial Day—In observance of Memorial Day, school will not be in session on Monday, May 30, 2016. We hope that you all have a very relaxing and safe weekend. PTO Donations—We would like to thank our PTO for providing so many extra programs and materials for our students. PTO makes a difference! Weather Wear—With our changing weather pattern we ask your continued cooperation in making sure children are dressed appropriately for school. Please send a jacket with your child, especially on chilly mornings. Students should not wear sandals or open-toed shoes to school. This way we can make sure that the children are dressed appropriately and avoid the potential for playground injuries. Home Address-If you have moved recently please update your home address with the school office. Your child’s report card will be mailed to the address on file along with any mailings that may go out over the summer. Moving? If you will be moving over the summer please let the office know as soon as possible. We are planning for the next school year. See form on back. Jump Rope for Heart-Week of May 9, 2016 Richland Elementary will be holding their annual Jump Rope for Heart event. Your child has brought home an envelope telling you all about this event. Please help us make a difference in fighting heart disease. Notes from Nurse Joni: Thank you for sharing your students with us over the past school year. We all look forward to a break and then the beginning of the 2016-17 school year! Here are some things to remember over the summer: As you see your child’s physician for physicals, remember that any medications given at school require a Medication Authorization Form to be on file in the office. WE NEED A NEW FORM AT THE BEGINNING OF EVERY SCHOOL YEAR. A form may be downloaded from the school’s web site: Only prescription medications require a doctor’s signature, but even over-the-counter medications require a form and parent signature. Please pick up any medications you have sent to school for your student by June 15, 2016. Any medications left at school over the summer will be thrown away. DO NOT FORGET THE SUNSCREEN! Skin cancer is a very real problem and sunburns at a young age can increase the chance of cancer later. Bike helmets save lives and brains! Always require your student to wear one while biking, rollerblading, etc. Summer is a great time to encourage reading for pleasure! It’s one of the best ways to keep the mind working over the long break. NEVER LEAVE A CHILD OR PET IN A LOCKED CAR! Hot weather is deadly for anyone locked in a hot vehicle. Need to catch up on some immunizations? Call your health care provider or Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services at 373-5364 or 373-5239. All immunizations must be up-to-date before your student can start school in the fall. May 6 National School Nurse’s Day We appreciate everything our school nurse, Joni Knapper, does for our district. Whether it is giving medication, taking care of injuries, or instructing in classrooms, Mrs. Knapper is always ready to assist our students and staff. Thank you Nurse Joni! Pick up Medications Please pick up any medications you have sent to school by June 15th. Whether it is an OTC like Tylenol or a controlled substance like Ritalin, we cannot keep them in the buildings over the summer. We also cannot send home medications with your student, so please plan on stopping by our offices. Please pick up Epi -Pens, inhalers and other emergency medications you may have sent in. New doctors’ orders will be required in the fall at the beginning of the 2016-17 school year. Please plan ahead and have medications ready and orders signed so we can administer medications. We do not stock drugs like Tylenol, Motrin, or Benadryl and we will not administer these without your permission. So if you believe your student may need something, please provide it in the original container (no baggies of pills, please). OTC medications only require a parent signature. Prescription drugs require both a parent and physician signature. Thank you for the privilege of caring for your students this school year. We look forward to seeing you in the fall! Summer is right around the corner and it’s time to start thinking about summer activities for your children.
