Love to Skate Competition!
Competition The dates for this year’s competition will be February 3 – 4,

continuing to offer the Open Freestyle events. These freestyle events allow skaters to perform spins
from ANY level. Jump restrictions still apply. Skaters participating in the open freestyle level in
spotlight or artistic events need to adhere to stated maneuver restrictions on jumps and spins.

your Skating Director or Team Coach collect and confirm all entries and send them in together. Be
sure to sign and verify each entry before sending them to Bremerton Ice Center. If you would like a
souvenir competition t-shirt or sweatshirt, please find the order form contained in this packet. Orders
can also be placed at the competition.
This packet should include all the information you will need. Please be sure to read the packet entirely
so you can enjoy the full experience. The practice ice schedule will accompany the schedule of events.

The competition will be conducted in accordance with the guidelines contained in the most recent edition of the
ISI Handbook. The new 2012 rules will be in effect at this year’s competition. SEE THE ATTACHED DETAILS
FOR MORE INFORMATION.
VERIFICATION
The Team Coach or Skating Director must sign each form to verify that the information contained on the entry
form is true and accurate. The information on the entry form must be complete and accurate. Inaccurate
and/or incomplete forms will be returned. False information will result in disqualification.
There will be a $25 fee for any changes made to your original entry form.

The competition is open to ALL SKATERS ages 2-100, who are current registered individual members of I.S.I. (Ice Skating
Institute). All entrants must compete in the highest test level they have passed and registered with the ISI on or before
January 6, 2012. All skaters’ ISI memberships and test level completion will be verified

Ensemble Team, Open Freestyle (Bronze through Platinum), Synchronized, and Jump & Spin. Male and Female skaters will
compete separately in Technical events only. The age groups will be determined by the number of entries in each event.
REGISTRATION
All skaters are to check in at registration 45 minutes prior to their scheduled event (except for skaters in the first
event of the day). If the competition is running ahead of schedule, an event may begin earlier than its scheduled
time. Registration will open 30 minutes prior to start of competition.

Team points have been raised for all ISI competitions for Synchronized teams.
First Place: 25 points
Fourth Place: 10 points
Second Place: 20 points
Fifth Place: 5 points
Third Place: 15 points
**In addition each team will receive 5 participation points for competing.
All other event entries receive 1 participation point plus the following points for placement:

Cassette tapes or CDs are acceptable and must be labeled with the skater’s name, event, age, and rink name.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
The schedule of events will be sent to each rink (not to the individual skaters) and posted on our website,
www.bremertonicecenter.com, 10 days prior to event. Please check with your Skating Director or coach after
January 23, 2012 for your event times.
ACCOUNTING REVIEW REQUEST
Review requests may be made in writing and submitted by the Team Coach to the Competition Director or the
Chief Referee no later than one hour after the results have been posted. All review requests must include a
$50.00 fee, which will be refunded should the review request be upheld. Review requests concerning
“judgment” will not be considered. The Chief Referee’s decision will be final.
PRACTICE SESSIONS
A practice schedule will be mailed to each rink (not to individual skaters) and will be posted on our website,
www.bremertonicecenter.com, by January 23, 2012.
TIMING AND DURATION OF ROUTINES
All routines will start from a stationary position. The timing of the routine will start with any action after the music starts
(even if the feet are not moving). Timing stops when the skater stops moving completely.

10 SECOND LEEWAY
The 10-second leeway over the prescribed time applies to all program events with music. This means that
judging will stop at 10 seconds over the prescribed time. If the skater skates 11-14 seconds over the prescribed
time, he/she will be given a duration score of 5.0. Any required maneuver done past the 10 second leeway will
receive a zero. There is no penalty for skating under the prescribed time.

The penalty for performing an uncaptured maneuver at the wrong level will be given the grade of 2.0 on the
judge’s sheet under extra content. Specific uncaptured maneuvers can be found in the ISI Handbook pages 310316.
SKATERS WARMWARM-UPS
There will be a short warm-up period before each event.
JUDGING
In fairness to the competitors, all rinks with skaters entered in the competition must cover an appropriate number of
judging panels. Please see the 2012 ISI Handbook for guidelines. All judges must be certified and have passed the
2012 Update Test if their original tests were taken before October 1, 2011. All coaches & judges must have a current
ISI Professional membership. All Professional Memberships and Judges’ Certifications will be verified by ISI.
DESCRIPTION OF EVENTS

TECHNICAL EVENTS – SOLO
Tots 11-4: Skaters are to perform a program to music, including all of the required maneuvers from the test
level. Tot 1-4 skaters are not permitted or required to perform an additional maneuver from a higher test level.
Coaches will be allowed to accompany their students on the ice for these events, if necessary.
Pre Alpha – Delta: Skaters are to perform a program to music, including all the required maneuvers from the
test level. In addition, skaters must perform
perform one additional maneuver from Freestyle 1. Moves from a lower
level are also permitted and any “uncaptured” moves for these levels are allowed. Skaters that perform two
different Freestyle 1 moves will be penalized with a 2.0 given under Additional Move.
In Beta, the foot must be lifted off the ice for the back crossover. Cut backs do not meet the test requirements.
In Gamma,
Gamma at least three strokes must precede the Mohawk combination, for a total of seven steps.
In Delta, the edges must be done consecutively outside-outside and inside-inside. The lunge must be done in a straight line and
completed with a one-foot glide.
Freestyle 11-10: Skaters are to perform a program to music, including all the required maneuvers from the test
level. Skaters are limited to three attempts per required maneuver during their program. Additional maneuvers
from higher test levels or uncaptured moves from higher levels are not permitted.
In FS 1,

ARTISTIC EVENT
This event is open to all skaters Freestyle 1 and above. Props of any kind are no longer permitted in the artistic event.
This includes a portion of a costume (hats, boas, etc.) if it is detached from the costume and used as a prop.

FS 11-3 / Open Bronze – Maneuvers allowed are FS 4 and below, Duration - 1:30 min.
FS 44-5 / Open Silver – Maneuvers allowed are FS 6 and below, Duration – 1:30 min.
FS 66-10 / Open Gold or Platinum – All maneuvers allowed, Duration – 2:00 min.
INTERPRETIVE
Open to all skaters at the Alpha level or higher. The skaters will listen to a previously chosen piece of music three times on
warm-up. The music will be played a fourth time for the skater to listen to while off the ice. The skater then creates a
program to the music. Emphasis is on the skater’s ability to choreograph to music, not on the difficulty of the skating
maneuvers performed. Skaters may not receive any help from their coach or others during this event. Music for FS3 and
below will be 1 minute in length, FS4 and above will be 1.5 minutes.
The following maneuver limitations apply:

FS 1-3 / Open Bronze – Maneuvers allowed are FS 4 and below

SOLO COMPULSORY MOVES TOTS THROUGH FREESTYLE 10
This event is open to skaters in Tots to Freestyle 10 levels. Skaters are to perform a mini program of the three
selected maneuvers, without music. Each maneuver may only be attempted one time. A minimum amount of
connecting steps will be allowed, however, there is no grade given for these interconnecting moves. Additional
maneuvers are not allowed.

STROKING – ALPHA THROUGH DELTA
Skaters will perform forward stroking in both directions to music of different tempos selected by the
Competition Director. Skaters will be grouped together by age and ability level. Crossovers are optional and
will not be judged.
STROKING – FREESTYLE 1 THOUGH 4
Skaters will perform the above in addition to backward stroking with back crossovers in both directions.
SHOOT THE DUCK
Skaters will compete in two divisions - Pre-Alpha through Delta and Freestyle 1 and up. The fee for the shoot
the duck is only $2.00.
$2.00 There will only be 1 winner in each division. Timing will begin when the skater’s hips
are below the knee level. Hands may be placed on the knee or free leg. Freestyle skaters must stand up to
complete maneuver. Falling will result in disqualification.
FOOTWORK
FOOTWORK
Open to skaters Freestyle 1 and above. This event is also available for all Open Freestyle levels. Skaters perform
Footwork Sequences of their own design to music, and are grouped by age and test level. The one-minute
program should contain a variety of turns and connecting steps, and may contain ½ rotation jumps and spins
less than three revolutions.

Freestyle skaters now have even more options to participate in ISI competition events. Skaters who have passed
any level of the traditional Freestyle 1-10 tests can also participate in the new Open Freestyle events. USFS

SPOTLIGHT EVENTS
Spotlight Light Entertainment:
Entertainment: To entertain in a refreshing, lighthearted, vaudevillian fashion using music,
costumes and props (optional).
Spotlight Dramatic: An artistic theatrical performance by an individual skater that evokes an emotional response
from the judges and audience. The skater’s interpretation should create a mood that is enhanced by style,
creativity, costuming and props. The overall impression at the conclusion of the performance should be that it
was dramatic, not lighthearted, as in the Light Entertainment category.
Spotlight Character: Individual skater portrays a famous, easily identifiable character, through the use of music,
costume, props and actions. Opportunity exists here for the skater to be creative, original and exciting.
Examples: Pink Panther, Superman, Cinderella, Minnie / Mickey Mouse, etc.
Skaters may enter more than one category. Each program must be different. Spotlight events have no required
maneuvers. Emphasis is placed on the theatrical and entertainment value of the skater’s performance, rather
than on the technical accuracy of specific maneuvers. Skaters are limited as to the maneuvers that may be
performed during their Spotlight programs.
SOLO SPOTLIGHT
Solo Spotlight is divided into four categories:
Low – Tots to Delta (duration 1.0 minute) - Maneuvers allowed are FS 1 and below
Medium – FS 1-3 / Open Bronze (duration 1.5 minutes) - Maneuvers allowed are FS 4 and below
Intermediate – FS 4-5 / Open Silver (duration 1.5 minutes) - Maneuvers allowed are FS 6 and below
High – FS 6-10 / Open Gold or Platinum (duration 2.0 minutes) - All Maneuvers allowed
COUPLES SPOTLIGHT
Two skaters perform a routine together that is entertaining, emotional or portrays characters. If a lower level
skater wishes to skate with a higher level skater, they must compete following the rules of the higher level.
Couples Spotlight is divided into four categories:
Low – Tots to Delta (duration 1.0 minute) - Maneuvers allowed are FS 1 and below

FAMILY SPOTLIGHT
Family Spotlight is open to a team of two or more family members. Skate a routine that follows Spotlight
costume & prop rules and specifications. Use Team Entry Form. Any skating maneuvers are allowed.
COSTUMES AND PROPS – SPOTLIGHT EVENTS
Elaborate costumes and props are encouraged to help skaters with the act. Skaters may have assistance at the ice
door. Props are limited to those that the skaters can hand carry onto the ice themselves (in one trip).

ISI SYNCHRONIZED SKATING FORMATION RULES
Mandatory as of January 1, 2008
Skaters are to skate as one unit as opposed to individual soloists. Teams will be composed of 8-24 skaters.
Synchronized skating stresses the importance of unison (please see the 2012 ISI Handbook for more details).
We look forward to the participation of Synchronized Skating Teams at Bremerton’s 20th Annual Love to Skate
Competition. Be aware that the new ISI rules changes for Synchronized Events will be in effect.
Please carefully review the following rule changes:
JUMPS, SPINS,
SPINS, LIFTS & INTERSECTIONS
Lifts are restricted to teen skating events only. The lifting hand of the lifter(s) should not extend higher than their head(s).
Acrobatic lifts: moves in which the skater is only held by the blade(s), foot (feet), leg(s) and arm(s) and swung around.
Acrobatic lifts are not allowed. All lifts where the lifted skater(s) is in a totally vertical sustained position with the head
down are considered an expression of acrobatics and therefore illegal. Assisted vaults or other lifts where the lifting skaters
is rotating around him or herself are allowed provided there is no sustained, totally vertical position with the head down.
Backward spiral intersections are not allowed at any level.
PENALTIES
* 2.0 Correctness for Formation teams who do lifts or acrobatic moves
* 2.0 Technical Merit for Skating teams who do lifts, restricted lifts, backward spiral intersections or acrobatic moves
* 2.0 Correctness/technical merit for teams that do not retrieve fallen items from the ice immediately after the performance
* Jumps (single rotation and below) are permitted at any level in the skating category
* Axels are permitted in the skating category with less than half the team performing the jump at any time

COMPETITION ATTIRE
We strongly suggest teams use a method called “sewing hair” to secure hair for performances. Bobby pins are
not allowed. Costumes that alter the surface of the ice are not permitted. Items that fall from a costume must
be picked up immediately after the performance so no deduction will be given. The penalty for not retrieving
fallen items will be 2.0 under Correctness/Technical merit.

This year’s 21st ANNUAL LOVE TO SKATE COMPETITION will require all teams to provide one judge for every 10 skaters
or less representing your rink. Bremerton Ice Center will utilize only those judges who have passed the ISI Judges
Certification Test. All coaches who have passed any level of judge certification exam prior to 10/1/11 must take and pass the
2012 Update Test to maintain their current certification level.
Bremerton Ice Center will send every team coach a blank judges’

placed by February 1, 2011 to receive the discounted rate.
