SUBWAY
Buy a single-trip ticket at ticket vending machines, which offer four language options (Korean,
English, Japanese, and Chinese). The ticket price that is displayed includes a 500 won deposit,
which can be refunded at a vending machine after you complete your trip. T-money, which is a
rechargeable smart card used to pay fares on buses, subway lines, and taxis, can be purchased at
convenience stores bearing the T-money logo (GS 25, CU, 7-Eleven, Mini Stop, With Me, Buy The
Way, Story Way).
TAXIS
In Seoul, taxis are widely available. You can find them at taxi stands or by simply
standing at a main road and waving. Taxi fares, which are calculated by distance and
time, can be paid with cash, credit cards, or T-money.
HOW TO USE T-MONEY
When you get on a bus or enter a subway station, simply tap your T-money card on the payment sensor,
and then repeat the action when you get off the bus or leave the subway. Note: If you don’t tap your
card when you exit, you will be charged double the base fare the next time you use public transportation.
And if you tap the card and then transfer to a different bus or subway, the fare will be discounted.

Smoking Areas
You are not allowed to smoke on the street in Korea.
Instead, find a designated smoking area or booth. If you
are found smoking or dropping cigarettes on the street,
you may be fined up to 50,000 won (around US$45).
No-Tip Culture
Restaurants include a gratuity in your bill. You don’t need
to leave an additional tip.
Convenience Stores
Most convenience stores are open 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. Among other items, they typically sell
