149571_Program.indd 1 7/6/15 4:31 PM EIC a 360º View NAB Conference: NAB Master Class, where content comes to life… TV personality Jason Wahler went one-on-one with PRISM Award winning actor and “Walking Dead” and “Southland” star Michael Cudlitz to discuss the impact of authentic storytelling. Michael earned his PRISM Award for his portrayal of John Cooper, a police officer who struggled with an addiction to pain killers after an injury. He was interviewed by Jason about how he brought this character to life, the trials and tribulations and hope demonstrated by the character, and the impact the character has had on the public. During the session, the influence of entertainment and media on audiences was examined and the power of accurate portrayals on attitude and behavior change revealed. This was a unique opportunity to see how a character and his story goes from the script page to a living, breathing, flesh-and-blood individual that audiences root for and return for. EIC, NCWIT & Google SET Award for Portrayal of a Female in Technology Actress Renée Felice Smith, who plays Nell Jones on the CBS television series “NCIS: Los Angeles,” accepted the SET Award for Portrayal of a Female in Technology at the annual NCWIT Summit on Women and IT, presented by EIC in partnership with the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) and Google. The award honors a female character (and those involved in bringing her to life in television, film or streaming media) that goes above and beyond to inspire future female technologists, eliminating stereotypes and elevating conversations about female ingenuity in a technology field. The award was presented by “The Big Bang Theory” co-star Mayim Bialik and EIC President & CEO, Brian Dyak. 7th International Mental Health Conference, “Together Against Stigma” Held for the first time in the United States in San Francisco on behalf of the California Mental Health Services Authority, the World Psychiatric Association, the California Institute for Behavioral Health Solutions, and the County Behavioral Health Directors Association. Brian Dyak, EIC President & CEO introduced the keynote speaker, Senator Gordon Smith, President & CEO of NAB. EIC ‘s TEAM Up program, also facilitated two media panels focused on depictions and stories of mental health. The international character of this conference underscored the fact that stigma associated with mental illness is not exclusive to any one country or culture.Stigma – the negative attitudes toward people living with mental health challenges, and the negative behaviors that result – is a major barrier preventing individuals from asking for support and, often, preventing support from being readily available. For many people living with a mental health challenge, the stigma they face is often worse than the illness itself. Media & Mental Health Awards Southwestern Pennsylvania Airing Pittsburgh Steelers legend, Rocky Bleier, served as Honorary Chairman of the Media and Mental Health Awards,(MMHA) presented by EIC in collaboration with the Staunton Farm Foundation and with support of the Mark Cuban Companies, features outstanding local print, TV, radio and online journalism in behavioral health. It highlights recent honorees from the Pittsburgh region, along with distinguished recipients of Media Legacy Awards, Adam Lynch and Joe Rovitto, with a posthumous award for Advocacy in Journalism to the late Sally Kalson of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The MMHA aired on PCNC celebrating accuracy in the coverage of mental health issues. Substance Use Disorders and Mental Health Webcast Series: Visit the EICtv EIC produced a series of six (6) webcasts designed to reach journalists and entertainment industry content creators with accurate, non-discriminating reporting guidelines and depiction suggestions. Each of the webcasts featured panelists who are content experts, have personal stories and represent unlikely partners in the conversations about substance use disorders, mental health issues and co-occurring health concerns. 149571_Program.indd 2 7/6/15 4:31 PM ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRIES COUNCIL PROUDLY PRESENTS THE … Dead” earned tion to to life, ter has es was was a Thursday, July 16, 2015 Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, CA ” ram, Honorary Chairman: John Landgraf CEO, FX Ho ness th any lf. and many other airing partners A Special Showcase Supporting National Recovery Month September 2015 - Washington, DC 3 . d eiconline.org 149571_Program.indd 3 prismawards.com 7/6/15 4:31 PM Friends of the 19th Annual PRISM Awards Diamond Circle Contributor Platinum Circle Contributor Gold Circle Contributor ($10,000 and Above) ($25,000 and Above) 21st Century Fox E! The honorees have all contributed to a formula that includes compelling stories, engaging entertainment, and important messages that inspire thought and conversation about the truth about substance abuse and mental health challenges. These productions and performances epitomize the notion that accurate portrayal yields powerful entertainment that can positively affect social change. On behalf of FX Networks, EIC, our PRISM Awards Showcase airing partners and Honorary Committee…we salute the creative community for making so many positive contributions to enlighten audiences while entertaining. We thank the Nomination Review Committee for their volunteer time and expertise, and greatly appreciate your commitment to debate “content” in a collegial and heartfelt manner. We also thank our colleagues at FX, EIC, and our airing partners for all their support in making health and social issues a priority. In the past 19 years we have come a long way in addressing mental illnesses and substance abuse as preventable and treatable conditions. But we have more work to do to end other forms of discrimination — the stereotypes and negative attitudes — that still prevent people from getting help. We can move beyond the idea that these issues are just about somebody else. They affect all of us. Powerful storylines and relatable characters are dynamic tools to reach vast audiences, and truly unique complements to research, advocacy, and public policy. We all can have a role to play in making things better. As the PRISM Awards have shown for years, PRISM Awards nominees help dispel the culture of silence and make it okay for people to seek the assistance they may need. We invite you to become involved in the Art of Making a Difference. Congratulations to this year’s nominees, your work truly makes the world a better place. He joined the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) as Deputy Director in November 2012 and later served as Acting Director. Mr. Botticelli has more than two decades of experience supporting Americans who have been affected by substance use disorders. He has been in long-term recovery from a substance use disorder for more than 26 years. As Director of National Drug Control Policy, Mr. Botticelli has coordinated evidence-based public health and safety initiatives across the federal government, focusing on key areas such as prevention, treatment, and recovery. In response to the national opioid epidemic, he has overseen efforts to reduce prescription drug misuse, heroin use and overdoses. These include working with law enforcement and other first responders to expand the use of naloxone, a life-saving medicine that can reverse opioid overdoses, and increasing access to medication-assisted treatment to help individuals sustain their recovery from opioid use disorders. Mr. Botticelli has also worked to better integrate substance use disorder treatment into health care systems to prevent individuals from reaching the most acute stages of the disease before receiving help. He has encouraged people in recovery, like himself, to make their voices heard and confront the stigma associated with substance use disorders, which often deters individuals from seeking and receiving quality treatment. While at ONDCP, Mr. Botticelli has spoken at the EIC PRISM Awards Capitol Hill Showcase and as part of the EICNetwork.tv produced webcast for entertainment creators and journalists. Prior to joining ONDCP, Mr. Botticelli served as Director of the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, where he successfully expanded innovative and nationally recognized prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery services for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He also forged strong partnerships with local, state, and Federal law enforcement agencies; state and local health and human service agencies; and stakeholder groups to guide and implement evidence-based programs. These programs include the establishment of a treatment system for adolescents, early intervention and treatment programs in primary healthcare settings, jail diversion programs, re-entry services for those leaving state and county correctional facilities, and overdose prevention programs. Mr. Botticelli has served in a variety of leadership roles for the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors. He was also a member of the Advisory Committee for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention. He has also co-authored many peer-reviewed articles that have significantly contributed to the substance abuse field. In 2008, Mr. Botticelli was the first recipient of the annual Ramstad/Kennedy National Award for Outstanding Leadership in Promoting Addiction Recovery. In 2012, he was awarded the Service Award from the National Association of State Alcohol and Drug Abuse Directors. Born in Upstate New York, Mr. Botticelli holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Siena College and a Master of Education degree from St. Lawrence University. 7 149571_Program.indd 9 7/6/15 4:31 PM PRISM Awards Capitol Showcase The 18th PRISM Awards Washington, DC Showcase, hosted by EIC and 21st Century Fox. The showcase was previewed before an audience of national leaders in mental health and substance use disorders. The PRISM Showcase is still the only show on TV, that has aired for fifteen consecutive years, in the history of television that addresses substance abuse and mental health issues. The Green Ribbon pin represents the California mental health movement, Each Mind Matters, to reduce the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health issues. This unique project encouraged California university and community college students studying film, television, journalism and social media to create compelling and accurate stories about persons living with mental illness. In addition, the program offered curricular resources and support for faculty members. The 2014 winners were recognized at the 18th Annual PRISM Awards ceremony, and they also had the chance to attend exclusive mentoring sessions with entertainment, journalism and social media professionals, as well as mental health experts. Student productions aired on EICnetwork.tv, a global internet television network. Generation Next winners Film and TV: Isabel Fischer, University of California Davis Journalism: Kyle McCarty, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Social Media: Rachel-Jean Firchau, Chapman University It’s Ok to Talk - Mental Health and Media Video Series at Saddleback College Campuses across the country have seen a dramatic rise in the number of students experiencing serious mental health challenges. Many schools struggle to find ways to discuss and report on mental health issues without alarming students or harming the school’s reputation. Saddleback College is taking the lead in addressing this issue by initiating an open dialogue that promotes appropriate and effective practices in the portrayal of mental illness in media, on and off campuses. EIC, in partnership with Saddleback College, hosted a panel discussion that brought together media professionals in the fields of journalism, digital communication/social media and entertainment, as well as mental health experts, school officials, educators, and school reporters. In addition to addressing how to talk about mental health issues on campuses, panelists discussed the power and influence the media have in reducing stigma and discrimination about mental health. Art Inspired by Real Life Experiences On May 16, 2014, students in the Drama Department at University of California, Irvine performed “Piece of Mind,” a theatrical piece inspired by the students’ interactions with community volunteers who are coping with mental health challenges. Following the event, the university held a panel to discuss dramatic presentation of and challenges inherent in talking about mental illness treatment and recovery featuring Congresswoman Grace Napolitano, Steve Pitman (President of NAMI, OC), and UCI’s Vice Chancellor, Dr. Thomas Parham. 9 149571_Program.indd 11 7/6/15 4:31 PM Special Award Winners Performance in a Feature Film Mira Sorvina Perfect Sisters Performance in a TV Movie or Miniseries Macy Gray The Grim Sleeper Performance in a Drama Multi-Episode Storyline Katie Cassidy Arrow 10 149571_Program.indd 12 7/6/15 4:31 PM SALUTES the nominees and winners on their achievement in depicting health and social issues Thank you Brian Dyak for championing this important cause throughout the entertainment industry LOS ANGELES NEW YORK www.rogersandcowan.com 149571_Program.indd 13 SOUTH FLORIDA NASHVILLE LONDON tthompson@rogersandcowan.com 7/6/15 4:31 PM Feature Film SCHAWK 1-SHEET )XOO%OHHG)RXU&RORU/LQHVFUHHQ%OHHG[7ULP[:LQGRZ)UDPHµ[7\SH6DIHW\[ &\DQ &\DQ &\DQ &\DQ &\DQ 0DJ 0DJ 0DJ 0DJ 0DJ <HOR <HOR <HOR <HOR <HOR %ON &\DQ 0DJ <HOR %ON &\DQ 0DJ <HOR %ON &\DQ 0DJ <HOR %ON &\DQ 0DJ <HOR %ON The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby Cake (Cinelou Films) GOLDEN GLOBE AWARD CRITICS’ CHOICE AWARD SCREEN ACTORS GUILD AWARD BEST BES T BES T ® ACTRESS DRAMA NOMINEE JENNIFER ANISTON NOMINEE AC T R E S S JENNIFER ANISTON ® NOMINEE AC T R E S S JENNIFER ANISTON &\DQ &\DQ &\DQ &\DQ &\DQ 0DJ 0DJ 0DJ 0DJ 0DJ <HOR <HOR <HOR <HOR <HOR %ON &\DQ 0DJ <HOR %ON &\DQ 0DJ <HOR %ON &\DQ 0DJ <HOR %ON &\DQ 0DJ <HOR %ON (The Weinstein Company / Unison Films / Myriad Pictures / Kim and Jim Productions / Division Films / Dreambridge Films / Standard Deviations) &\DQ0DJHQWD<HOORZ%ODFN7(03/$7( St. Vincent (The Weinstein Company / Chernin Entertainment / Goldenlight Films / Crescendo Productions) Still Alice (Sony Pictures Classics / Lutzus-Brown / Killer Films / Big Indie Pictures / Shriver Films) Comedy Episode or Multi-Episode Storyline Shameless: Season 4 (Showtime Network / Warner Bros.
